In this video, I go to a nearby lake and net 50 gambusia minnows to add to my ponds. They are great starter fish and also eat mosquito larvae. Thanks for watching!!
catching these minnows reminds me of being a kid and catching them in the drainage ditch. I was after crawdads, but got more minnows. The minnow trap worked well for both. I have no clue why I thought it was fun to stay out there for hours after school trying to catch these things, but i did. At the time i didn't know these were a different breed of minnow from the silver ones we would catch at the lake. I just thought they were younger. really enjoying all these videos of the new pond.
Maybe try adding in all the gunk you dredge up with the net as well by swishing it in the bucket, it'll be good for adding tinier animals you can't pick up with your fingers.
I’ve enjoyed your videos for quite sometime, but these videos about your new pond is on a whole new level! I’m so excited to see what’s gonna happen! What animal life is gonna make the ponds their home, what plants are gonna thrive, how all our favourite fish and turtles are gonna like their new home. Keep up the great work!
Grabsome floating plants for them to hide amongst in your ponds. Also get some rooted plants as well. All the plants will bring in food sources for the Gambusia and their fry.
Looking forward to the new ponds being ready. This is really interesting watching you start from the ground up. Very educational. Thanks for all that you share. Take care.
It's honestly so fun watching these ponds take shape, It's really cool to see an ecosystem being built! I can't wait to see what they look like in a year
Great update, never realized that so much went to starting a pond. The water looks so blue and will be a great home for the 🐢, 🐢,🐢,🐢,🐢,🐢,🐢 and the Gar.
these pond update videos are my favourite. its so cool to see the early stages and development of what I have no doubt will be a flourishing little ecosystem :)
These little fish are quite interesting. They are genetically the same as wild guppies. They are also related to South American Endler's guppies. I successfully bred these with aquarium guppies and then had the hybrids breed with Endler's guppies in my 55 gallon tank. I kept them alive for many years. They made some neat patterns and things you just don't see in the wild or in aquaria hobbies. Neat little fish. They have amazing survival mechanisms.
@That Guy he probably just had a female with had already mated with a male and you know they can produce babies for about a year before needing to mate again
I absolutely love this channel. Fantastically interesting, and the care you take with your critters is heartwarming. Many many thanks for your humanity
Small ones are male, big are female. They are live bearers. So they produce live babies, they will continue to produce young for about two years. That's about as long as they live. But they are prolific as long as there is food for them. Nice video
Are you going to plant anything that grows from the bottom of the pond? Like reeds and such, or even things that grow in deep water and are completely underwater. And where'd the stuff you added last time go? These poor blighters can't hide anywhere!
@@CokeReggae08 He put vegetation in the water 2 weeks ago, and aquatic plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen in the water. I'm sure the fish will be okay.
So glad you got some American Bullfrog tads and those crawdads are adorable! We had bullfrogs in our koi pond until last summer until a gorgeous Red Tailed Hawk discovered it. ::sigh:: 🐸🐠 rip Oh how this reminds me of early morning seining for chubs to sell to the bait store when I was a teen. I had an overnight trap I baited with bread, as well. Silly water snakes would think "I hit the buffet!" go in the hole, eat their fill then drown. 😢 Of course, taking them out was a tummy tickler 'cause sometimes they hadn't drowned yet. 🐍 But the money was good for the work, 25¢ per 5 small minnows and 10¢ per chub. Nightcrawlers were 10¢ per crawler as well. They sold for 25¢ per chub or crawler and 75¢ per 10 small minnows and worms.
These ponds, I feel so connected to them already, because of all the behind the scenes you've shown us. I can't wait for every new video, I can't wait to see them a year, 2, 5 from now!
I'm betting bug larva. He might also be planning to feed them for a while until things establish more. Having living critters in there should help that go faster, too.
Lily pads would make good cover and make the pond in general look abit better with the greenery and flowers as well as reduce Nitrates, Interesting to see if the Gambusia(mosquito fish) survive and reproduce.
Gonna keep suggesting the artificial island(s), gives a lot more geographical space to the turtles and waterfowl that may benefit the pond
I’ll look into it

Same
It's good that most of us have great memories like these
We had a creek and lived out in the boonies so I was able to sell my catch to the bait and convenience store. Good times.
@Eddy Jin how do you know he’s lying?
@Eddy Jin okay but how do you know he’s a liar
The video of him moving all the animals to their new home is gonna be fun.
Why do I find watching this so relaxing?
Its warming i guess? Idk why i sub to him but i dont regret it!
Because watching someone working is something that makes people satisfied
Nature has its effect I guess
Nice; can't wait to see what's the next addition to the ponds.
I love seeing progression on the pond, it gets me excited.
I usually find it easier to catch mass amounts by throwing out a piece of bread and scooping under the bread. Works like a charm
That sounds like a good idea
Yes!
I usually just go to the pet store to the feeder minnows.
$10 and about 50 minnows lol
Looks like they need more water grasses and such to make their new home complete

I'd also order online daphnia, ostracod, and copopod eggs to sprinkle into the ponds to keep algae blooms down.
I'd be shocked it a bunch didn't hitchhike on the hornwort he added, not to mention the pond water that came with the mosquito fish.
@@jic1 True but you also get other predators that way, too.
