  • Meet the western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis. These small freshwater fish, reaching a whopping average of 2 inches in length, are widely used around the world as a biological pest control agent - that is, they are organisms used to control the populations of other pest organisms. As its name suggests, the mosquitofish’s claim to fame is its appetite for mosquito larvae.

When I was a girl. I used to kneel down over a steam and hold my two hands scooped together and catch them with my hands.
I was quiet and very slow movements.
Sometimes I would use a cup. When a fish would come close enough to my empty cup I would tilt the cup into the water, and the suction would pull the fish inside.
    Good times.

Bro, mosquitos aren't just pesky. They're STILL considered the most dangerous animal in the world, killing more humans than any other creature.

Close, but it's actually the Malaria and other bugs that kills all those humans, not the mosquito. The mosquito just facilitates the transportation of the Malaria into the human blood system. It's kind of like the river doesn't kill you- it's the crocs and hippos hiding in the water that'll get you ;)
      Take care ✌

I made it a point to introduce mosquitofish to every permanent standing body of water on or near my property.

I will have to mention there are better options. Ive owned both “Gambezi” minnows ( mosquito fish) and Rosie minnows bought as feeders from fish stores. They are both native to North America and are in the minnow family. Rosies are feeder fish known as fathead minnows. Among the two the the rosies consumed only the mosquito larvae and at a faster rate. They were a personal better choice The mosquito fish decimated thousands of pacific tree frog tadpoles (where already present) and mosquitoes larvae still was found until the rosie minnows went in the pond. Some of the mosquito fish cannibalized on the fry (babies) the fatheads or rosies also survived better as they were more cold tolerant, more resilient to different ph freshwater levels. They were much cheaper at 10 for a dollar at any pet store as well. They specialized in the mosquito larvae and i see much less mosquitoes now.

Something I hate about mosquito fish is that they die fast
