About 8 months ago, I brought home a pregnant female Gambusia fish. I thought she was a guppy so I put her in with other guppies after she had her babies. Thanks for clearing this up! I was also under a false impression that the guppies and mosquito fish can interbreed! In fact, I was going to try and have them do that! LOL Great informative video!!
A few notes. You got the genus right the first time. Mosquito fish are in the genus Gambusia, not Heterophallus. Where did you run into Heterophallus? Now as for the differences. Unlike the guppy, the female mosquito fish has two or three rows of tiny black dots on the dorsal fin and tail. Unlike the guppy, the mosquito fish's scales have black edges. Unlike the guppy, the mosquito fish often has a black teardrop marking under each eye. Finally unlike the guppy, the mosquito fish is an aggressive fin-nipper completely unsuitable for community tanks. And mosquito fish are a little bigger. I'd also mention that mosquito fish are very difficult to breed in aquariums because they are voracious about eating their fry. By the way, are you sure you showed a picture of a molly? I've never seen an orange molly. It looks for all the world like a platy. It's good to see a RUclipsr giving mosquito fish the attention they deserve. They're great fish. You really can't beat a fifteen or twenty gallon tank with a bunch of mosquito fish. They're very active chasing each other, and they learn that you're the one who feeds them, so they come to see you when you come close. When the light hits them just right they have an iridescent sheen, so they're not really as drab as they seem at first glance. Thanks for the video.
@@VSOP300blkout Congratulations on your breeding success. What kind of setup did you give them? Did you do anything special to avoid cannibalism? What kind of fish were you keeping them with? I'm guessing from your having to move them that they were no match for the mosquito fish.
