    I’ve been practicing this style of stenciling for a while now and I did have one issue I overcame that he didn’t touch in this video. Let’s say you were doing this and you did ever proper step and after you hit the “ invert “ step you have a bunch of black blotches what you do is restart the step process what I do now before even doing the duplicate I’ll take the original photo go to the wand tool and go to “ hue, saturation, brightness “ and make sure there is 100% no color by sliding the saturation to the left then I’ll slide the brightness between 50-60% then continue the duplicate color dodge invert and gaussian process. It’ll prevent any of the black dots / blotches.

    Hey Dave. You said at the end there about to. Much black on the TS app . I found that aswell so I get to the limit, download and then go to the picture in the gallery and edit. Going straight to the eraser and rub out what you don't want in the stencil. Easy to change thickness of the pen tip so you can erase small pieces and if I see something I like in a magazine or similar, I use tracing paper to get the main lines and put it on top of the stencil machine paper and go over with a pencil. Perfect and easy as.

    In photoshop I believe it’s with ‘unsharp mask’ that with the right settings you can achieve this edge detection line art kind of effect also

    • @mn-lw5qv

      Also to simplify the lines I’d try using “refine edge” from a selection of the lines. It has more control than median filter

    I’m definitely a dinosaur because I’m trying to get back into tattooing and nobody talks about using the old stencil papers anymore by hand. Dang things change so quickly. I get it though. It’s so much quicker, cuts down on time and maximizes profit.

    • @ArtSomething

      Using tracing paper, stencil paper, light boards and what not are not necessarily dead as I was making stencils that way just a few years ago. Its just that its SOO much easier and convenient to make them digitally if your able to. There is a bit of a learning curve but once you get past that you can really start to see the beauty in it.

    Hi Dave...another awesome and informative video...thank you!
    QUESTION THO - did your stencil print come out black, if so, what transfer paper is this? 🙏🏼 Also, are you saying that your prefer your thermal printer over your Canon printer?

    • @ArtSomething
      @ArtSomething  2 года назад +1

      thank you Crystal glad you enjoyed it. The stencil looks like it came through the thermal machine black but its just really dark purple, once it goes onto the skin you will see the purple far more then when its on the stencil paper. And yes I prefer the thermal printer over an inkjet printer, mainly cause I like how much stronger/ longer lasting the stencil is when placed on the skin compared to the inkjet printer. (just personal preference)

    • @vixensbeautyden
      @vixensbeautyden 2 года назад

      @@ArtSomething okay gotcha, so that brings me to this subject
      - I’m having an issue with the ink NOT coming off the skin once the tattoo is done.
      I use a thermal printer and say there’s a full circle and then the client doesn’t want a full circle, I can’t get the rest of the ink off the skin..once I’m done.
      Am I not wiping enough, am I leaving the stencil on too long prior?
      Or could it be that I’m suppose to wipe the stencil prior to tattooing - like taking the bulk of the ink off first?
      Another huge question - I do mainly small/fine line tattoos…would an inkjet be more suitable for this? I find the thermal printer doesn’t pick up small details. I have one like yours.
      I’ve been hand drawing and now wanna switch to something that’s easier.
      I really appreciate you! Sorry for the story book!

      Yes I do believe there are apps for android, not sure what those apps are called nor how good they are just know a few people in the past told me they use a combination of a couple apps to do the same thing.

    I showed a tattoo studio a digital image and asked if they could make it into a tattoo but I'm so confused. Is the an unrealistic request?

      I would imagine they should be able to do that. However some studios dont know how to do that or they dont do that sorta work. Might want to check out a couple of shops and see what they say.
      I know I can turn most any image into a tattoo so im sure someone should be able to do that for you.

    How do you get inkjet stencils to stay on practice skins?

    • @ArtSomething
      @ArtSomething  Год назад +1

      inkjet stencils are pretty hard to get to stick to fake skin to be honest, they dont tend to dry very well. But best product for getting stencils to stick to fake skin has been a speed stick.

      @ArtSomething I think acetone is what I seen in a tat2skin video for fake skin ofcourse have you tried the inkjet spray on human skin I think this would be a good place for pigskin

    There is a better way to do a stencil, i like to do the first way he did on the video, but we lose some details.
    In my opinion the best way is using photoshop on a desktop,
    put image on b&g mode,
    duplicate the layer twice and apply the filter on both photocopy
    but you have to edit (filter setting) then different, one of them ( layer) you should focus on details and the other on shadows.
    multiply the first one, adjust curves if needed, and voila.
    or even better, draw every details by hand.

    So grateful you shared this, and perfect timing! Just working on a new design, a galaxy design and I was dreading how to make a stencil from the piece I drew...Tried this method and the stencil is going to be perfect for this piece. It is scheduled for tomorrow (9/14/22) I'll send you the results.....Thank You, Much Appreciation!

    Am I the only one left who actually draws out my artwork and stencils by Hand? I dont like designing on an electronic tablet. Also I dont use those new "fairy wands" these millennials tattoo with. I use coil machines.
