  • Nearly 70% of Americans surveyed by the American Psychological Association said they worry the invasion of Ukraine could potentially lead to nuclear war and they fear that we could be at the beginning stages of World War III.
Researchers estimate there are about 12,700 nuclear weapons spread between nine countries, with the United States and Russia holding the majority, but experts consider an attack to be unlikely. Watch the video above to learn how a nuclear attack could play out.
The world watched uneasily on Feb. 24 when Russian troops, under the orders of President Vladimir Putin, invaded Ukraine.
“The prospect of nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now back within the realm of possibility,” U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said March 14.
Nearly 70% of Americans surveyed by the American Psychological Association said they “are worried the invasion of Ukraine is going to lead to nuclear war, and that they fear that we are at the beginning stages of World War III.”
Researchers estimate there are approximately 12,700 nuclear weapons spread between nine countries, with the United States and Russia holding the majority.
Researchers and government officials stress that a nuclear attack is very unlikely.
“We are assessing President Putin’s directive and, at this time, we see no reason to change our own alert levels,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Feb. 28.
“As long as these weapons are around, the possibility will always be there that they will actually be used,” said Alejandra Munoz, a project officer at the Dutch peace organization PAX.
Researchers, academics and advocacy groups for risk reduction and nuclear disarmament have written reports detailing what a hypothetical attack could look like and the long-term impact it could have on the planet and society.

Everyone should be aware that they’re going to continue to say that it’s “very unlikely” right up until it actually happens. Which is a shame, because people should be asking for better public nuclear preparedness initiatives from the US government.

@@cindiheaton6469 To a certain extend US did not start the war physically. But they sure did instigated a conflict between Ukraine and Russia like all other wars and conflicts. They continue to expend NATO after the fall of USSR. Imagine your neighbour joining your biggest enemy allowing them to put military bases and nuclear weapons next door of your country because of a pact. Your country security will be vulnerable. Not to the west but to the Russians national security. If the US doesn’t like what happened during the Cuba Missile Crisis. They of all countries should know what it’s like to have your biggest enemy being too close to your neighbour. US could’ve ask Ukraine to stay Neutral but instead giving false hope of joining NATO causing Russia and Ukraine conflict. Russia is to blamed for the war but the US is to be blamed for the being the instigator. Every country the US goes to “defend” the country will be left in ruins.

As a teenager, I remember sitting with friends discussing what we would do in the few minutes between the announcement that a missile was on it's way, and the impact. Interestingly, several of that group, myself included, have not had children. In my own case, I think that I was traumatised to the extent that the thought of my own children living with this threat hanging over them was too much.
Later, I became a teacher of History, and had to deal with the bombing of Hiroshima. I never tried to "soften" the facts just because my pupils were 14 years old. By then I had realised that people should know the facts. To make the maximum impact, I'd make it personal, describing how the same bomb would have affected our city. Parents would tell me later how frightened their children were, but not one ever complained, and some thanked me for being honest.
Unfortunately, the world seems to be divided into one group who do not know what the impact would be, or don't care, and a second group who do understand. The latter is the smaller group. Living in a democracy, we are more likely to be in that latter group, though many do not want to know, closing their eyes and their minds. Those living in dictatorial states have little option but to believe their leaders, and to think that a nuclear attack will be something that affects THEM (the perceived bad guys) and not US (the perceived good guys). They do not understand, and they certainly don't care what happens to THEM.
I hate nuclear weapons, but cannot see that a nuclear free world is possible. Pandora opened the box, it's too late to close it now. Someone, somewhere would create new weapons even if the currently existing weapons were destroyed. I cannot imagine a world where only a Putin or a Kim had weapons. The nuclear deterrent has worked for decades, and we have to hope that, mad as some appear to be, dictatorial leaders are not mad enough to forget what the consequences of nuclear war are.
I am in my last decades, I have no children, I hope nothing happens, though being from the UK my chances of being a target are high. However, it breaks my heart, sometimes, when I see the small children going to the local school (I live almost opposite one of the gates, so see many), and I fear that they will one day have memories like mine, memories of discussing my imminent death because of the behaviour of some distant lunatic.

What I want to know is, what will the alert be like? Will I get an emergency buzz on my phone? Some klaxons in the distance? Will there even be an alert since there's really nowhere to go? Will I, at the very least, be given some minutes to make my peace? The idea of suddenly going lights-out, not aware of how I went, is somehow worse to me than knowing it's from nuclear fire. I want to see it coming.

Back in 1983, there was a made-for-TV movie called "The Day After" on ABC which was watched by something like 100 million people. Fast-forward 40 years and we are now revisiting this horror as a possible scenario vis-a-vis Russia attacking Ukraine.
Any way you slice it, a nuclear attack on *any* country would change the game. Aside from panic, hysteria and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people (or more), global markets would fail as well. Needless to say, it is an unimagineable nightmare scenario that will hopefully never occur.

Russia did kinda go nuts on tactical nukes... suitcases, 5 inch shells, torpedoes, mines, grenades etc... and on strategic ones too. They completely ignored the strategy of making them solid fueled and easy to launch and went all out on giant space launch capable rockets with 25 Mt of warheads.

I had a dream years ago that still haunts me, and this war is bringing this nightmare back. It starts with me waking up in the middle of the night, the television in my room turns on by itself, and the emergency alert system is blaring, describing an imminent nuclear threat. Outside of my window, the skies are glowing a dark, crimson red, and I get up and look outside and see fires on the hills. For context, I live near LA, on the other side of some large hills separating my city from LA. I get dressed and gather with my family, we grab all our valuables, pack our stuff in our cars as quickly as possible, and start driving east, but traffic is backed up because of the panic. Everyone is on the road. As soon as I get just far away enough from my city, the sky lights up again, and there is a massive blast that shakes my vehicle and shatters the windows. Everything behind me is destroyed. It is a long drive east, and every city that I pass in this vast desert is nothing but rubble. Bridges are collapsed, there are car crashes happening left and right, the conditions are extremely hazardous. I drive for hours with my family, and eventually, we are far out in the middle of nowhere, and I run out of gas. I get in the car with my mother, then my brother, then my father, as we all continue and run out of gas in the desert. We are eventually forced to walk the rest of the way, hundreds of miles in this hostile environment, completely unprepared. The sky glows red and orange the entire way, and at one point, I become so exhausted that I can't carry on any further, and I fall to the ground, stare at the sky, it is disturbing and beautiful, and then everything fades to black, and I become another casualty, part of a statistic, a corpse in the dirt, then I wake up.

Real A-Bombs or H-boms or Netron bombs never haver still don't and never will exist. Why? Course it was just a well prepped hoax,..and. Be course the nucler atom split chainreaction (Atomb bomb) is against / violating the Universal Laws Of Physics. Einstein, Oppenheimer etc were actors coached by natural scientists, 'holywood / Disney studeo's, etc. The Manhattan project was bluff. Heavy water factory raid In Norway intended to let AXIS believe the allies were close to developkng an in Science fiction books known wapln called Atomic bomb or Pulse or Ray weapon. Raids on tokio nagasaki and hiroshima are just fire bomb and normal blast bomb raids. The japanesse surrender partly and 'play along' with the allies that the destruction was caused by just one Atom Bomb dropped on several cities by only one bomber (plane) at the time! All so called nuclear tests are one and the same prepped for months or years even kilotons of ordenace and other explosives and combustables blown up in one moment as if it was caused by one little ATOM bomb device. Above and unserground. To make it look real preferable heave radiactive material was added ih the blown up stock pile of 'explosives' to make it look to be an Atom bomb. Chain reaction with radioactive 'fall out'? These above ground always fake just convedtional explotions, sold as life nuke tests , caused cancer radioactive polution etc and were banned almost unanimus by 99,99 % of the countries ih the world. Exept china and warchaupact? Why? Cause most test were not even large explotion but ver early extreemly advance trucked montages small scale films. The H- bomb for instance the most famous one tdst were the remains of axis fleet was blown up. Is just a slow mo movie witadded back grojnd and explotion is a rising sun above the ocean. The ships are models! In nowaday USD dollars that ' movie' production would have cost almost have cost 700 million USD!
China and russia were unable to make thdse trucked SF a fake A or H bomb tests. So they persisted in large stock pile prepped for years often big explotions above ground the only showed to there own audience in blank and white and never in colour. The tzar bomb movie from the early 50's is only in the in the 1990's first shown in later added colour!

Additionally, fallout produced in midair by the weapon itself often is carried high into the atmosphere and might not fall to Earth for months, likely nowhere near the bomb site. This lowers the acute risk of radiation

But to maximize blast damage there is a fixed height for each yield of nuke. There may be less radiation damage but up to two times the blast damage. That's why each of the nukes for Japan were set as air-burst weapons with radar altimeters in the fuzes to detect the ideal heights for detonations.

The Cuban Missile Crisis brought us to the brink - in fact, closer than was even realised at the time, with one Soviet sub captain going so far as to give the order for its weapons to be launched (an order, mercifully, not followed through). This is a tighter situation than that by far. Even Khrushchev wasn't that mad.

In 1980, Luis Alvarez and his son Walter came up with the theory that an asteroid impact had wiped out the dinosaurs. Not long thereafter, many scientists began to compare the damage this asteroid did to the earth with what a full scale nuclear war would be. The conclusion of these scientists was, that while a full scale nuclear war was not as bad as the asteroid impact in terms of explosive damage, it still had enough explosive damage that when compounded with the additional effects of radiation, a full scale nuclear war was an extinction event for humans.

One point: A ground burst or low altitude air burst produces the MOST amount of fallout for a given yield. Fallout is all of the debris that is sucked up into the fireball. The closer that detonations is to the ground, the more material that is sucked up.
A high altitude detonation produces very little fallout relative to its yield.
Second, the greatest danger with respect to nuclear escalation is the deliberate use of an accurate tactical low yield weapon against a hardened military target or a critical infrastructure. An adversary may use one if they believe that we would not respond in kind or use larger nukes. That would most likely lead to a large scale nuclear exchange.

She recalls teachers going to the main office to watch latest updates, returning to class telling students to go home, be with your family, remember how much you love one another and to wait and prepare to die. I kid you not. She said she balled her eyes out as every kid did and cried with her mother all huddled in their living room waiting to die waiting until dad finally made it home stuck in traffic as everyone was sent home. To die. 5th grade. I dont think people understand what every Boomer remembers & the trauma that causes on children. To go home and prepare to die. This was SW washington state where she lived. Over 3,000 miles from Cuba & sent home to die by all the teachers. You can just see everybody sitting by their tv’s, radios, waiting to hear what Kennedy or Khrushchev would do? Will we live or will we die? The entire concept of duck & cover was abandoned in schools after that as people quickly realized death is by far a better choice than surviving a nuclear war. But because things are so censored from school children these days, we have raised 2 generations of Americans who were sheltered by not showing them bodies of Jews burning in ovens, or of Japanese survivors without any clothing, hair, lips, or genitalia because it was all burned off from the blast. But they survived and I know this from the documentaries. Documentaries some idiot declared too graphic for a child so they could grow up thinking such a war can be won. Just read some of the comments from people above or below me… these idiots are saying the govt should be handing out information on how to survive. It’s like what part of stupid university did they come to the conclusion we can survive?

      1) The 1963 film Ladybug Ladybug shows a situation similar to your story. Children are sent home for a "go home" drill, but word spreads that it's not a drill, that they are going home to die in a nuclear attack. (Their reactions are heartbreaking! Especially little Jo Ann.) There is some extraordinary acting in that film, but it's a product of its time, so there are a few sappy bits. I think it's one of the best Cold War films. 2) We will not all survive a nuclear war. Most of us will die, if not right away, then in the decade that follows. The important word is MOST. Some of us will live. Even if it's just 1% of the world's population, that's 80 million people. What kind of world do we want to leave them? Should we leave food, medical, agricultural, and industrial supplies for them to make a new start? I think it's irresponsible to write them off. I think we need to consider that question and come up with a rational plan before it's too late. The US government has this continuity of government plan to make sure the people who are in power now remain in power after a nuclear war. (You can see the importance of keeping the people in power who got us into the war, right?) I think the people of all nations deserve a similar plan. The people, not those in power. Plan for the survival of the people, some of them anyway.

Death from the aftermath of a Nuclear Bomb and not in the initial blast is horrific and painful and almost otherworldly. The Radiation dose alone will start to liquify your interior organs (for some idea of what that looks like check out Chernobyl the series from HBO, while it was not a Nuclear Bomb that went off how those initial people die who are exposed is what it would look like) not to mention the burns on the skin and organs, it's just not something anyone should think is survivable, you will wish you were dead in the initial blast.

If it liquifies organs, then how safe would a piano be?

Depends of what the keys r made from. I'm getting one of those new piano Nuke insurance policies as well. But then got thinking maybe I should learn to play first lol.

Same. It’s very frightening and distracting to think about. How stupid are those in control to think that if they initiate this attack, they will survive? And actually make things better? Too much evil with too much power.

“My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos... ruined dreams... this wasted land. But most of all, I remember The Road Warrior. The man we called "Max." To understand who he was, you have to go back to another time... when the world was powered by the black fuel... and the desert sprouted great cities of pipe and steel. Gone now... swept away. For reasons long forgotten, two mighty warrior tribes went to war, and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all. Without fuel they were nothing. They'd built a house of straw. The thundering machines sputtered and stopped. Their leaders talked and talked and talked. But nothing could stem the avalanche. Their world crumbled. The cities exploded. A whirlwind of looting, a firestorm of fear. Men began to feed on men. On the roads it was a white line nightmare. Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The gangs took over the highways, ready to wage war for a tank of juice. And in this maelstrom of decay, ordinary men were battered and smashed... men like Max... the warrior Max. In the roar of an engine, he lost everything... and became a shell of a man... a burnt-out, desolate man, a man haunted by the demons of his past, a man who wandered out into the wasteland. And it was here, in this blighted place, that he learned to live again.”

Actually many people would survive the bombs. The biggest issues would be severe food, water and energy shortages - coupled with security. If you have a cupboard full of food it's very likely you would be attacked by your neighbour when they run out. It really would be survival of the fittest.

I wish the government would start preparing by creating a massive underground city but of course that is ridiculous for something that could never happen. Seems like a good setting to a movie though.
