Girl U Want would deserve a lesson sometime due to its spiraling guitar line everyone would love. As always thank you for mentioning THE KEY OF THE SONG! so many teachers just build their lesson on "put your finger here....then here".
This is a great lesson on this tune. Well done! It’s much easier to play it with the recording I think because it helps me keep time. Now you need to tackle Rock Lobster from the B-52s.
I always love your lessons because you start the video with a full playthrough. It's so useful once I've learned the bits and pieces to go back and review or play along with. So many YT lessons don't include a playthrough at all.
Outstanding. Uncontrollable Urge is a very interesting song to play. Also Planet Earth and Gates Of Steel. So many interesting songs by a revolutionary band.
Such a great song! Easily overlooked because it's so often lumped in with gimmicky stuff, but Devo were a lot more than that. Very well done, Adrian, thank you!
Thank you so much for this Adrian, I've been a DEVO fan for decades. I love everything they've done but particularly the first album... Uncontrollable Urge and Gut Feeling are punk rock classics. Imagine having your first album produced by Brian Eno! They were destined for greatness from day one.
Cheers for discussing Devo, a band misunderstood or ignored by most, usually just casually lumped in with 80's one-hit wonders, all of which does their music a grave disservice.
I'm "mature" enough to remember when this was a hit. "Whip It" done got some prog happening in it.. The title track "Freedom Of Choice" is a banger which I actually dig more, but this still gets the affection. 🙂
Great - I first heard Devo as a teen in the 80s after finding Are we not men? on a wall with a ‘please take’ note. Loved it. I have recently been listening to Kelly Deal’s cover of Devo’s Smart Patrol: Mr DNA, which is double bonkers.
Great lesson of a very catchy and clever song . First time viewer here, I notice in the background you have the 3 basic food groups : Fender, Vox, and Marshall.Tasty. Cheers.
Great vid! I always loved their unique take on Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones. I'd love to see you cover that one, bc it's clearly not how the Stones play it.
Jumping in for a +1 on Freedom of Choice. Some tasty single line stuff with some big power chords! I’ve tried to cobble together bits and pieces from the internet, but I have a sense that they are all wrong. Would love to see you create the definitive tutorial!
This is kismet. I woke up this morning with Girl You Want as an earworm and was wondering if there were any tutorials out there, then I checked my RUclips alerts...
A classic song and video, to be sure, but a lot of Devo's material is even better and a lot of fun to listen to and play. They also made one of the greatest rock covers ever with their brilliant, off-kilter deconstruction of Satisfaction by the Stones, taking the quintessential song written "from below the belt" and making it totally awkward and nerdy and cerebral.
Yeah, it's an awesome guitar. I've not used it for a while since there were problems with the wiring. I talk about it a little right at the end of the video.
It’s like they were trying to write a catchy song while breaking with every convention. Really odd chord changes and playing power chord arpeggios backwards- octave 5 root. Brilliant.
I have never been into Devo, to me they were just a band that jumped onto the punk bandwagon thing, however, I quite liked the version of Whip It! that you played
@@SO-ym3zs New Wave wasn't a thing in 1973-1974, nor was Post-Punk. Devo may have been slightly influenced by Art Rock, but they mixed the cerebral with the scatological and smart-ass. Punk wasn't calcified into a single specific style of music until a few years after it hit the scene.
Absolute best thumbnail ever on an ACPG vid.

Gates of steel is 👌
Gates of Steel must be one of the most underappreciated rock songs ever. That or Girl U Want would make for a good guitar lesson.@@Reekohswahvay
They were doing raw industrial post-rock in '75, like way before everyone else. Best Devo for me is Hardcore Devo vol.1 and 2.
One of the most underrated and misunderstood bands. So glad you brought them in with your always excellent teaching style. Hope to see more!
DEVO, so revolutionary! Great lesson. "Freedom of Choice" is another great one!
that's one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen
Every band I've ever been in has covered this song, even if it was just in our practice space. It's just so much fun to play.
Such a great song! Easily overlooked because it's so often lumped in with gimmicky stuff, but Devo were a lot more than that. Very well done, Adrian, thank you!
One of Devo's biggest hits...was huge back in 1980 especially when it first came out.
That was a fun one to learn, Been a Devo fan since '81. Going to see them for the first time next month in San Diego.
Thank you Adrian for doing this song along with going through the background/origin of this masterpiece! BTW that is one beautiful Vox.👍👍

Unfortunately Brian Eno civilized them, they lost the rawness and dirty sound they had before the first album. The production is not good at all...
Your guitar looks sumptuous!
I loved this video very much. That Devo tune is so nice light and "cheery", i love it.

More Devo!!
The Video Preview was worth the like. 😎
Great track and lesson, thanks

Brilliant!! I loved this.. so many great songs to choose from too
Fantastic lesson Adrian thank you!
Uncontrollable Urge or Freedom of Choice next please!
Yes! Was thinking of doing more - either of those would be great.
@@acpgAwesome, thanks! BTW the song choices for your lessons are amazing!
Yep, Uncontrollable Urge is a great guitar tune.
Girl U Want is up there too

You backing tracks are always spot-on. I'd propose a behind-the-scenes video on your production process (but why give away everything?).
Excellent, thank you. Devos version of Satifaction would be cool.
What is this very cool guitar? Great lesson as always!
We are Devo!
We are not men
Ooh, very nice! Would love a Smart Patrol/Mr DNA one next.
Sweet-looking Vox axe, Adrian!
thanks man you‘re the best
Wohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh , Merci pour cette Guitar Lesson ,depuis la France je te suis , J'Adore , ma préférée de D.EV.O : Mongoloid ........
So much fun, thanks!
Great job sir!
Great job, sounds exactly like the record 👏 👍 👌
thank you Adrian! proper! I second the request for Girl You Want. Cheers!
Good starting place, my choice for next would be Girl U Want from the same album. or the end solo from Blockhead
Hope you do some more DEVO like Beautiful World or freedom of choice
I have a 'theory' that the riff for "Beat It" was inspired by "Whip It" and that's why Michael Jackson called it "Beat It".
Dude you pick all the best songs
Yay, thank you Adrian 🤗
I always appreciate a good whip crack! 😮 Thank you Adrian!
Awesome!
This was fun. Thanks, Adrian !!!!
Great video, Adrian. Thank you!
Brilliant. Just like I remember it.
Really fun vid Thanks a lot Adrian

You can’t do enough Devo.
Thank you! Deceptively easy, but it's the space between the notes that makes the song.

I’m definitely down for this one 🤠
nice guitar
Flatwound strings ?
I've been thinking about writing a minimalist song. This is exactly the guitar groove I want. Thanks.
(:
Excellent
Smooth!
do gut feeling!
Stop being so good.
Could you please do a lesson for “#1 hit song” - minutemen
Nice dude! More please
Salute Bob Mothersbaugh!
Adrian, you rule.
Excellent choice for a lesson
The stilted rhythm is a good exercise , and of course, being slightly mad rarely hurts
Do "Pity You" or "Uncontrollable Urge" next!!
That’s a nice Vox guitar.
Craaack that whip!
I would love to see you do a tutorial on Freedom Of Choice! I know that you would do it justice.
How about "Shrivel Up"? Large number of notes, for a riff ! Much good stuff in there.
Hell yes!
I'll practice these riffs instead of scales :D nice looking Vox guitar
This was awesome! Just learned hanging on the telephone as well. Could you put a lesson out for The Worst Band In The World - 10cc
Roy orbisons pretty woman was the inspiration for whip its main guitar riff
Oh man! I have wanted one of those for years! How do you find the triple bucker? If you want to sell that Vox Virage let me know
Yeah, it's an awesome guitar. I've not used it for a while since there were problems with the wiring. I talk about it a little right at the end of the video.
I watch most of your videos, and it seems like the OX/Marshall never get used. Have I missed it?
Lol, this was unexpected, but well done :-D
Do Gates of Steel! Also Freedom of Choice.
Gut Feeling should be the next!
A Request you to do “Girl U Want” next time
Thanks
Well you did do the all black thing matching your outfit to gear.
Awesome! Please follow this up with ‘Girl U Want’ 😎👍
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please do either mongoloid or get no satisfaction, that is Devo's best album i think
Like deployed 👍
😎🎙🎸✅️
Oh to have those spider leg fingers instead of my tiny little nubs....oh well....I press onwards doing my best

Ouch. Devo predated punk, starting out in 1973. Punk jumped on the Devo bandwagon!
Stylistically, "punk" is not a term I'd associate with these very cerebral rockers. Art rock, New Wave, Post-punk...@@unkindestcut
