- In The Women of Rothschild, Natalie Livingstone reveals the role of women in shaping the legacy of the Rothschild dynasty, following the extraordinary lives of the Rothschild women from the dawn of the nineteenth century to the early years of the twenty-first.
As Jews in a Christian society and women in a deeply patriarchal family, they were outsiders. Excluded from the family bank, they forged their own distinct dynasty, becoming influential hostesses and talented diplomats, choreographing electoral campaigns, advising prime ministers, advocating for social reform, and trading on the stock exchange. Rothschild women helped bring down ghetto walls in early nineteenth-century Frankfurt, inspired some of the most remarkable cultural movements of the Victorian period, and in the mid-twentieth century burst into America, where they patronized Thelonious Monk and drag-raced through Manhattan with Miles Davis.
Natalie Livingstone, author and journalist, will be in conversation with Lauren Gilbert, Senior Manager for Public Services at the Center for Jewish History.
This event took place December 6, 2022.
Thank you for your taking the time to dig into the history of the women. I have been so curious.
I have long been fascinated with our patriarchal and matriarchal roles through history. I became very much enlightened when I read books such as, " When God was a woman" and "The White Goddess". Matriarchal dominance through our past to the present is well documented. Whether the womans role is behind the curtain, in front of the cash box or beside her husband's ear are all part of the roles that play out in the male-female balancing act. Thankyou for this refreshing discussion on the Rothschild dynasty under the Matriarchy of Hanna.
thank you for sharing
The Rothschilds discovered the importance of family unity, family loyalty, keeping family secrets, not airing out their dirty laundry for all to scrutinize, not throwing a family member under the bus, keeping the money within the family and many more attributes that would foster family wealth collectively. Then, how to become accustomed too and keep and grow the wealth they accumulated. To me, in the face of everything they had to endure, to hang in there to get to that point where they were organically wealthy and knew how to handle and build upon their wealth, is admirable to say the least.
The sound keeps cutting out and makes it difficult to listen.
They are not even the richest family of all. Those families are not talked about.
go up to them and tell them that

Pardon my ignorance. But if the name of a family is based on the color of their house then it begs the question: What was the name of that family before they moved into that house? Or to put it another way, what it really means is that, that is not the real name of that family. Because they had to have had a different name before they moved into that house. So pray tell, what was that name?
Before the 1800s, most Central and Eastern European Jews didn’t have surnames.
@@nygilberts With all due respect such an explanation makes no sense. Ever heard of a rabbi, born in 1604, named Menasheh ben Yossef ben Yisrael? Plus, let's just say that what you are telling me is correct. Then, If nobody had a surname or last name it means that that would be an environment where imposters could flourish. The poor could and would assume the names of royalty, and criminals, the names of those who were legitimate and well respected.
@@jerrysamuels1113 Those are patronymics ("ben Yossef" "ben Israel" ) not surnames. It was only after "emancipation" that European states required the Jews to adopt fixed and permanent family names. You can read about it yourself.
@@nygilberts I will do more research. Thank you. But emancipation from what?
