My beard is medium length and pretty thick. Balm was useful for control when it was short. Now that I keep it longer, I only use oil. I found as it got longer, it naturally stays in place with just oil and a little heat when styling. Happy weekend everyone!
Honestly, I tried beard balm, and beard wax. I don't care for either one. Im a morning oil guy, and beard butter at night. I did recently try a beard wash bar from the bearded Mack Company. Liked it so much, bought 2 other different scents so I can switch them up. I also tried 2 of their oils, I liked them too. Light. Not over powering like grandmas perfume!! My favorite company is Beard of God. I have different oils and butters from different companies. But wax or balms, not for me.....
For a while I just used beard oil on my beard when it was short and when I say short I mean only a few millimeters long. But now that I’ve been growing out my beard for about the past 6-8 months and it’s still only a few inches long I have started using a beard balm the first one I used was Viking Revolution but it’s a very light balm and didn’t do anything to control the flyaways or control my beard that has a lot of hair coarse grey hair so I’m using Honest Amish now
I'm so glad you went into the field of education. You've just got that knack/art of conveying pertinent information on any level (lay person, advanced, etc.). It is a talent, for sure. You have it. I'd gladly be a student of yours from grade 1 to post-graduate! ;-)
I'm working on growing my beard longer and you're right, it does help w/ styling and control. When my beard is longer, its weight keeps it in place. I totally agree. Keep up the great info!
I don't use beard balm either, because I like for my beard to just move naturally rather than waxed in place. You give great advice on beard health and grooming tips. Literally when I started "No Shave November" I would have been totally lost without your beard advice videos. Thanks for all your help!
I like the balm for work, i have a small beard and i like the way it looks with it on. Before bed, i wash it with beard shampoo and use beard butter with no scent. It's dry by the time i go lay down. Oil i hardly use, i don't like how oily oil is on my beard. Oil is for the beard skin I keep hearing.
I need the balm. My favorites are strong hold balms because my beard has a mind of it own. The best balms I have are Luxurious Bastard, NoresmanBeard & Beard Baron. Those balms help me so much it’s no joke. If the balm is light I use it as a body lotion.
If you like balm that much, try Honest Omish. The heavy duty 2 oz... I didn't like the cajun one I tried. It smelled like medicated powder to me. But their beard oil, black soap, and beard balm I used for 5 years. Will continue. Omish people have been making beard products a long ,long ,long time!!!!
@@user-ne9wp8ve5u Another company for my beard butter favorites is Beard of God. I bought like 9 different smaller sample butters. Wow! What a lucky find. Myself personally, I dont like any beard products that smell like a strong heavy scent mens cologne. It has to be light. And smooth. And these are freaking amazing! The French vanilla, and tobacco havana, vetiver stone. are out of this world! Try 'em if your looking to expand your collection. You won't be disappointed!
I got tired of the balm getting in my work shirt. I have a 12 inch beard. My beard is not super dense so it looks better longer when I do the 5:00 shadow cut it doesn't look that full.
Every persons beard is different. Mine is a large thicker beard with some gray down the middle. I have been using Honest Amish balm and love it. I’ve tried many other “butter” products, but this balm is da bomb. Use it often as it leaves my beard feeling good and tames the bushy sides a bit. I’m beginning to realize that Honest Amish has some really, really good products as I like their premium oil too. The low cost is a huuuuuge bonus.
I have a short beard I like to use balm to help my beard look nice and try to style my mustache a little. I have not been using beard balm as much lately because I now live on a ranch where I only get to shower once a week.
6.5" beard (just trimmed it this week) and I don't use balm. I'm generally new to products, aside from oil, but I'll be checking out some butters, washes & conditioners, too.
I’m almost 70 and have a white-grey beard, course, medium length about 3 inches. From previous videos (I follow Dan) I thought palm was good to lock in moisture so I used it but for past few weeks just oil and comb with blow dryer, butter at night. Heated comb maybe once in week and a half or so. Seems all I need. Growth rate decreased a lot though and thinner hair on top. I’m starting on a better diet, increased exercise and cut all alcohol. We’ll see in a month or two how that works out.
my beard is about 6 inches long, I use Honest Amish Heavy Duty beard balm, almost daily after oiling up. Use it because of the nice smell and shine it gives my beard, also somewhat for the hold, which isn't that firm I might add.
I really like balm, it helps to style my 4 inch beard and lock in place, like Dan said. I can see why some wouldn't like it though, especially with a long beard, but for me anyway, applying a _small_ amount of balm after straightening it every day is just part of my routine. I do at least rinse my beard out every day, so I don't notice any buildup.
Great video & tips! 13+ inch beard at the moment & currently do not use balm on the beard. I feel it makes the beard fork show more. Dan if you can help here please, maybe because of the ‘stickiness’ of the balm? I have been using balm occasionally on the stache. I feel like the balm is helping keep the stache up and away from the mouth, giving the heat used some extra holding power. Although using a heated brush alone works just fine. Thank you Dan & keep it up!
Medium length beard, but it’s coarse as hell and loves to do its own thing. So when I need to look nice a good balm is great to have for me. That being said, the rest of the time I like to go oil or oil/butter.
@@DanCBearded I was glad to see you call out that so many brands falsely call butter balm. I used to think my hair couldn’t be tamed at all because sure most didn’t hold it. Then I started looking into ingredients and found the problem
I am new to the longer beard club normally I keep it short and trimmed. I have been using oil and balm, my beard is starting to grow pretty well but even the balm doesn't seem to control it. Wife got me beard brush straightener for Christmas and that doesn't help either, it's like my beard is waving to everyone in every corner of the room LOL. Anyways I have been enjoying your videos and learning a lot, thank you for that!
As a man with a short beard ....balm is still in my routine. Even tho i use butter whenever the company offers it only but i do still love beard balm. But with the mask i do realize I’m getting a lot of beard pimples but the way my beard set up i be needing that extra hold and nourishments under the mask
Mine is gray- mostly white. I use light colored balms mainly on the sides. As you said, to control the fly-aways and give a little definition. I use some oil first, blow it and add the balm after drying. I think that combo helps mine. I also like the weight as it is not a really long beard, but not short either. With growth, I also find it takes less. I tend to use a thicker balm from Bearded Oregon and I also like thier stash wax as I tend to curl those up a little. I also use a beard wash to get all the wax out every couple of days. Works for me. . .
I have a medium beard at the moment. I use balm on somedays such as meetings or going for the night. But i had a long beard efore and i preferred it without. So as it gets longer ill probably stop using at again and just use oils
My beard is a few inches long and very curly. I have to use Balms and wax’s to keep the curls laid down in waves. Butter makes the curls less prominent and I like to try and maintain them
I've got a medium length beard (trying to grow out to braid and put beads in), I use balm occasionally (I did today in fact) but usually just if I have annoying fly aways
I am not a balm fan myself. Over the last couple of years, I have given balm plenty of opportunities to sway me, but to no avail. I ride a motorcycle and drive a convertible, (5 liter Fox Body 😬), so a balm+wind in my hair=my beard is a mess. Plus, I get flakes if I wash it every day. That took me a while to figure out actually. Anyway, moving on. I keep one balm in a matching scent to one of my regular oils and butters for like, going out, out. Say to eat with the wife, or something like that. A situation where I won’t be wind blown, and want my beard to be more controlled. That’s what works for me. Thanks again Dan!
These are very good points Dan, thank you. I wear butter almost exclusively vs balm. I did use more balm when It was shorter, but now my man mane is about 6-7 inches and medium/thick thickness so I rarely use it. I feel that gravity and the butter holds it just fine w/ a little heat. My beard is straight in some spots and curly in others.
I have a shorter beard with a more prominent mustache but I’m in the awkward phase of trying to let things grow. With my job I’m bent over with my head downward 80% of the time but I like to feel like my beard looks groomed. I generally apply a medium wax to my mustache in order to help hold shape, and balm to the sides of my beard around the sideburns and outside of the jaws to try to lock in a more “collected” appearance. The middle and lower portion of the beard is generally without product aside from oil for the same reasons you mentioned here (I stand up and my beard would be locked out at an angle away from my face from my head position while working). Thanks for the information and sharing the logic behind the decision you’ve made!
Well Dan you schooled me on this one. I was still using balm to help keep the beast under control. And as you pointed out the first disturbance will cause a beard memory maneuver that may or may not be desirable. So for the past few days I’ve just gone with the oil and voila the beard behavior is stunning. It’s counterintuitive that no balm would equate to better style retention, but it does. Thanks for the great idea.
My beard is incredibly curly and I’ve found that using beard oil in combination with the balm ultimately makes it feel dry and brittle, particularly at 4-5 months of growth. Curly beards are debatably a different beast. So, through trial and error, I’ve discovered that my beard is naturally soft and benefits from using the oil as soon as I hop out of the shower. The balm is only beneficial in the short beard stages for my hair follicles. Great video!
I have a medium beard- for me with the coarseness of the white beard I need all the moisture I can get, so I like a balm because I feel like it locks it in
My beard is down to my collarbone. I use balm (less now with the mask wearing) almost daily. It's the grey hairs that seem to not want to play nicely with the others and require more arm twisting to toe the line.
My beard is about 5" with tapered sides. Trying to go longer but sides are thinner and seem to get a lot of flyaways, along with part of it grows one direction and another grows the opposite so it can get kind of crazy at this stage. If we are going out on a date night or similar, I might throw some balm in to get a little hold. Otherwise it's just using oil and blow dryer only while working from home.
I've been using beard products for over 2 years now and am on the fence about balms. I think my beard is either best short with just oil or slightly longer and also with butter. That's only an opinion though, ha ha. And to answer the question, I've a short business beard 😎
Love it I just started growing my beard out Dan you have been a huge influence on my decision to grow a beard and your channel has taught me how to maintain my beard thank you
I’ll always use balm. I jumped on the butter train for a few months when it became popular but then I tried balm again and missed it so much. Nothing feels better than applying a balm and using a boar bristle brush to neatly finish it off
Do you use balm on a totally dry beard (say 20 minutes after shower and beard oil), or on are partially damp beard (Say 5 or 10 minutes after shower and beard oil)???
@@antoniojo1500 I hate applying products to a dry beard personally. Just doesn’t feel good. I like to oil my beard and comb it out when it’s slightly damp, then lock all the moisture in with a balm on top and lightly brush it down
That's what I do too. Slightly damp. Like 10 min after applying beard oil. I like Honest Amish beard balm, but I just got the Honest Amish Heavy Duty beard balm and I think it's even better! 🤩
@@antoniojo1500 I tried the Cajun balm they have. I dont like the scent. But the heavy duty balm I used for 5 years. Great hold. You only need a little. And the smell is not perfumy.
I started using balm early when I started caring for my beard. I haven't found much use for it aside from scent and 'nourishment'. I'll still use it but, I don't find much help with flyaways or styling. 😮💨 I bought beard wax for that. Fortunately, I haven't bought much balm, however, I do like what I've bought and you can't complain about the free samples from BABC. Cheers Dan!
My goatee is medium, looking straight forward it.stops just above the top of my chest, I have just now started growing my beard back out, for my goatee I use oil and butter in the morning and before bed, I only use balm if I'm going somewhere with the wife, I been using the same can of balm for months because I only use it once a week at most, I was always told to only wash a few times a week to keep from damaging my beard, and since I'm very passionate about my facial hair ,I don't want to do anything to hurt it ,only down side is.last time I grew it out fully the hairs on the side of my face wouldn't lay down for nothing in the world, now thanks to this channel I have a few tricks up my sleeve this time around, thanks Dan
@@DanCBearded I'm going to grow it out again, any help would be appreciated, love to keep in touch on my progress and would gladly listen to any advice u may have to help
I have a medium size beard and have used oil and balm to style. Always felt that butter would not allow me to style my beard to address my fly aways and curliness. Recently I have been using butter on my beard and balm/wax on my mustache. I am now using butter 80% of the time. I noticed if I use a fine tooth comb with butter I get the style I wish and noticed my beard is softer. I always wondered why you don’t like balm and now we know. Thanks Dan.
I have a long beard. I use balm on occasion but wash out in the evening. I prefer alcohol free Softee extra hold for windy and high humidity days. It darkens my grays a bit also.
I have a medium beard and I don't use balm anymore, although it was the only product I used when I had a shorter beard. Now the only styling product I use is a bit of wax to style my mustache and tame the sideburns.
I have a medium length, I consider medium thickness. I don’t wear balm because of the mask. I might try out a couple once masks aren’t required to see if I like them but as of right now only use oil during the day and butter at night
My beard just below the "V" of a polo shirt (long or medium?). I use oil and Balm in the morning along with moustache wax. At night, I use Butter, usually something recommended here. I like the balm for control, but am not hard over on it as the beard grows. Oh yeah, mine is mostly chrome.
I'd say I have a medium beard. I only use balm when it gets really cold, like 20 degrees or lower because ill get beardruff if I don't. Other than that, oil and butter only.
I LOVE the feeling of my beard blowing in the wind! I experienced that for the first time not too long ago and it was an interesting sensation. I've only used balm a handful of times. I really wasn't a huge fan, even when my beard was shorter. It was harder to melt down and didn't seem to provide any extra hold for my stubborn beard.
Great Video as always Dan i don't use Beard balm on on Rare occasions i much prefer butter with no wax due to build up like you said but if i have to use then then that is fine i just wash my Beard well afterwards it makes my beard feel strange after using balm
I have a short grey/white beard and curly hair. I use oil and balm during the day for styling and oil and butter at night for moisture retention. This works well for me and the wife likes it. I also use different brands and oil viscosity so my beard does not get used to one consistency.
I have a long salt and pepper beard and have never got on with any balm. I don’t like the heavy unnatural feel and this also go’s for butters which contain wax. I think we need an industry standard where anything labelled as butter should be wax free and anything containing wax should be labelled balm
Thank you so much Dan! This is great knowlage. I went to my barber on monday where I bought my first beard balm ever. Normally I use butter but I thought I'd give it a try. After watching this video I've come to the conclution that I'll only use it in specific occasions.
I agree with you when you say companies should name their products properly , Shae moister says that there beard oil is a beard conditioning oil , they should just call it a conditioning beard oil, with out you telling me that it is actually a beard oil I would have no idea what the product is. When I hear that a product is a beard oil I know what the product is, I instantly know how to use it and what I should expect. Also because of your beard oils you can buy at the store video I am giving shae moisture beard oil a try, I had thought about trying it for a while but was confused and was thinking is it a beard oil or not, then you said it was a beard oil and I now know what the company classifies this product as in their beard products line.
I use balm daily, makes my beard soft and better controlled. If I blow dry or use a heated brush I use less and only on the surface. Butter I use only at night. I have more butters that I would categorize as being really balms than balms claiming to be more like butters. To me, wax equals balm, butters should be no wax.
I use oil and butter during the day for right now and butter at night I was a oil and balm guy until I found your channel and found butter and what it’s for. So I use it after my oil in the morning and after I blow dried my beard because of how it makes my beard feel and look. I need a little control, not much just a little bit and that extra nourishment gets me through a 16 hour day. Balm was okay but did not make my beard feel as good as I wanted. After trying a quality butter I’m never going back to balm!! Amazing video Dan as always brother!!! Killing it!!
I think this is really down to personal choice. I have a long, thick beard and also style my moustache. I like the look and feel of a styled beard so I use balm quite a lot. However, I will switch things around a bit and go to butter every few days. It really depends on how smart I want to look and how I'm feeling.
Try Beard of God, beard butters. Try the small sample ones first. I swear, I'll be with them forever. The French vanilla smells so good I want to eat it!!!! You won't be disappointed!!🧔👍
I used the balm when my beard was shorter but now as my beard got longer I stay away from balm its no longer needed so I manly now just stick to oil and butter. If I feel like really styling my beard that day I’ll use the oil and blow dryer to set the style then after I mist spray it then apply a little bit of the butter to hold it there. So now I have a few tins of balm that now just sits there with no need for it.
Same Dan. I gave away all my balms. I like my beard to flow and always felt that balm restricted that movement. Sometimes I will butter during the day but that absorbs for the most part.
The more I learn the more regrets I have about how I started out with products when I decided to let my beard grow long. At the beginning, the only product I saw in my local store was little round tins of Duke Cannon beard balm.. so I tried it. It melted down to a kind of liquid in my hands so I worked it into my beard. But the build up happened quickly, even when my beard was still short, so I decided to see what else was out there. Now I use only beard oil and occasionally butter. I should have done some research when I started.
I used oil and balm from the same company if the ingredients gives me more advantages for my beard. But on the other hand i used beard oil and butter during the day and not at night
New to the beard world and growing out my beard! I have a short beard, I guess, and I am using the Goodfellows Beard oil and balm and the Every Man Jack Beard Butter right now. I am waiting till after Christmas to buy some nee oils and butters. I am a Therapist and work with kids everyday. I find that I want a professional looking beard and that is why I gravitate towards Beard Balm but I am finding out that it is not for me. I much rather use a beard butter.
This is a great video. You are absolutely right. I explain balm to men as what gel is for women. My guy has a shorter beard and only use the balm when we go out. All other times he uses an oil or butter.
I have what I consider a medium sized beard, somewhere between 5 to 6 inches long. It's fairly dense with some grey around my chin. I still use balm on occasion because I like having a little weight to my beard. That said, I am starting to use butter more often for the exact reasons Dan mentioned in this video, as my beard gets longer I find butter works just as well as balm to help style my beard the way I like. I say that because one side of my beard lays pretty flat while the other curls distinctly outward, even after using heat so I need a little something to keep it in check.
My beard goes down to my adams apple, mind you my beard isn't very thick. Personally i use beard balm to control my beard when I'm going out and to add a bit of volume to it.
Same here. But every night before bed,I like a different butter every night for the smell, the nutrients, and the moisturizing, and butters like French vanilla, are soothing and seem like a stress reliever.Oil every morning right after stepping out of the shower.
My beard is probably the at the max end of what you would call a “business beard.” It’s dark, thick, and very curly. Unfortunately the 3-5 times I’ve used balm it did nothing for styling. So I don’t really use it. But I’m sure it has its place
My beard is about 6 inches so i would consider it on the medium length side and i love balms but I stopped using them when covid hit for the mask/acne reason. There’s really no need for styling if i have a mask on for 50-60 percent of the day. Before covid i used balm everyday because my beard is very soft and the wind or really just about anything would ruin the shape and i would have to comb it back in place. Balm kept it in check for me. I washed it out everyday because im very active and sweat alot. To tell you the truth im not really missing it now because my beard has gotten longer and the gravity has been helping hold it down a little. Love the channel and what you do for the bearded community keep up the good work
I like using balms depending on what I’m doing. My beard is turning grey (well, it’s mostly grey. 😂) Ive noticed I do not like very sticky balms however so maybe I’m going for just a little hold and control. I definitely try not to use balms on windy days. I like Whisky n Hardtack, Duke Cannon, Beard Octane the best. Full bodied butter I’ve noticed does a good job and I’ve thought about using that instead of balms. Still after 1 1/2 years of watching Dan C I’m trying to lock into what’s best for me.
I quit using balm years ago for your same three reasons. Oil and butter is all I use. Best beard decision ever. Having my beard not sway with the wind defeats the purpose of having a gloriously long man mane.
I have an average density gray ten inch beard and currently don't use balm. When my beard was shorter the cheek hair was shorter, wild (gray hair is unruly), and like to bunch up on my cheeks. It kinda threw my beard out of balance, aesthetically. I used balm to tame the cheeks and only used it on my cheeks. As the cheek hair grew longer, it started to behave and lay more flat thus negating the need for balm. And yes, I did experience some build up but I also use stache wax and decided to add warm water to help remove the wax from my cheeks and stache before application of butter as part of my night time routine. I have kept the warm water damping of my beard in my night time routine because it seemed to open up the hair to accepting the butter more readily and achieve deeper penetration. Right or wrong, it seemed to help my beard so I kept it in my routine. Sidenote: *Dan* there is a possible video for ya. Warm water damping of beard to open the cuticles up for bed time butter.
I have a long beard that I used keep the sides short. I am currently using balm because I am trying to grow the sides of my beard to have a consistent length. Without the extra control, my beard looks like the Unibomber's. I have used butter before and plan to go back once the length is enough that gravity keeps it from sticking straight out. I also like the feel of my beard swaying in the breeze.
I have a medium long beard, thick, curly and partially grey. Beard balm always left me disappointed, tbh. Even when my beard was shorter, balm did absolutely nothing to keep it in place. Probably because it's curly and very wiry, it just pokes in all directions no matter what. Especially where it's grey. So I stopped using beard balm recently, and my beard feels much better now that I'm only using oil and a brush to style it, and occasional co-washing. My favorite beard balm (which was more like a leave-in conditioner, but still kinda waxy) changed formula to a lot waxier, so that made me tire of beard balms altogether, as I've tried many different kinds. Wax as a product is just not working with my type of facial hair, I think. Without balm for a couple of weeks now, my beard feels lighter, softer, not sticky, and just over all more comfortable, with no difference to how it looks aesthetically. The skin underneath also feels healthier, a lot less acne. As it gets longer, my beard keeps control over itself better, probably because of gravity. So I agree that longer beards probably don't need beard balms. Aside from, of course, personal preference. Kinda wish I had heard about this sooner, would have spared me the trouble, and all the money I've wasted on beard balms! But better late than never. I appreciate your opinion on this.
My beard is about medium length with a thin moustache. I use balms but not all that often. I generally use a combination of oil and butter every morning and just butter in the evening before bed. I can sometimes switch out the butter for balm if I am going out and have to look my best, but since I discovered butter I have used balms less and less
Hey Dan C i use oil and balm on work days i have a foot long but thin beard my wife loosly braids my beard for me befor work i use the balm like a few other commenters as protection from the hot and dirty enviroment of my job but wash it out after work and apply oil and shea butter and no balm on days off
My beard is 7 inches long, which I believe is considered a medium beard. I stopped using balm a while ago for all the reasons you stated. I don’t need it. I use oil in the morning & butter in the evening.
I mainly use oil 2-3times a day right before bed 🛏 oil wait 5mins then Butta , learned from the trust Teacher Dan C Bearded , balm once in a great while . Great content awesome 👏 GRINDZ.
100% Dan! Not sure if it's because I have a white beard but balms just never even in the beginning did what they're intended as far as hold and it just felt sticky and awkward in my beard. So I've never really used in my beards pretty long now I've grown it out for a year and the weight and the length like you've said in your video feel great for the styling. I really like what you said about butters and foams not being consistent in their labeling too because last night I wore a butter that probably has more wax in it and I can feel the build up just in one night.
My beard is medium, and my beard is pretty thick and full. For me personally I do NOT use a balm, but only because I like the natural look of my beard. For keeping control of the waving out at the sides, I just use a hair dryer (after letting beard oil absorb, of course) and brush if down
I have a short to medium lenght beard with a pretty big hungarian style moustache. And i only use balm for my moustache or for when i go on a night out other than that i'll just use beard oil.
My beard is a long and thick beard. I’ve been kinda going away from Beard Balm not that because Ive have had a bad experience but I’ve been buying from Live Bearded and they don’t sell balm. I’ve been faithfully using wash, oil, and butter every day for a year now. That combination has been working great. Sometimes I feel like I’m all over the place with beard products.
Just a dab of oil on the finger tips to nourish the routes, I am just growing mine back after a clean shave. Wash morning and night, little oil for the routes and a good nourishment of cream or butter with a shed load of Vitamins before bed 👊🏻🧔🏻♂️
Medium length with grey racing stripes. 10 months into my yeard I find myself at a the balm crossroads. I’d been using balm daily for the past 6+ months but have thrown in a couple oil-only days recently. I’m not quite at “swaying” length but I think my beard feels softer without the balm and it doesn’t run away like it did when I was shorter (the reason I started using balm to begin with). I think I may henceforth stop buying matching balms...
Thick, dry, and semi wavy and curly beard. I am experimenting with warm coconut oil and shea butter daily going on 2 days. So far improved. 11 months from a yeard with shortest hair at the throat beard part going on 3 inches. Beard needs help with Dan C endorsed and formulated Beard Butters!! No glycerin!!!
I only use balm after hitting my beard with a heat straightener which I only use maybe once or twice a week. Really depends on what I'm in the mood for
I have a (recently) shorter beard. Shortened it from 8 inches to about 4 last week...just needed a change. But I do not use balm. I used to use it, but don’t anymore, mostly because of waxy buildup. I do still have butters I use at night, and occasionally during the day, that have wax in them (like DGC), but it’s FAR less wax than a balm has.
Totally agree! Everyone has their own preferences!
For a while I just used beard oil on my beard when it was short and when I say short I mean only a few millimeters long. But now that I’ve been growing out my beard for about the past 6-8 months and it’s still only a few inches long I have started using a beard balm the first one I used was Viking Revolution but it’s a very light balm and didn’t do anything to control the flyaways or control my beard that has a lot of hair coarse grey hair so I’m using Honest Amish now
Awesome!
I'm so glad you went into the field of education. You've just got that knack/art of conveying pertinent information on any level (lay person, advanced, etc.). It is a talent, for sure. You have it. I'd gladly be a student of yours from grade 1 to post-graduate! ;-)
That’s about the kindest thing you could say to me. Thank you!!
I stopped using balm about 6 months ago. I use oil and butter now. Blow dry and and round brush does good for mine
Thanks for the info, I did not know balm was for short beard mostly. Thanks for the video. I try to watch them all. Keep it up
You’re absolutely welcome Dave!
I'm working on growing my beard longer and you're right, it does help w/ styling and control. When my beard is longer, its weight keeps it in place. I totally agree. Keep up the great info!
Thanks Jim!
I don't use beard balm either, because I like for my beard to just move naturally rather than waxed in place. You give great advice on beard health and grooming tips. Literally when I started "No Shave November" I would have been totally lost without your beard advice videos. Thanks for all your help!
I agree with all of that. I stopped using balm after about 6-8 months. I like free flow feeling!
I appreciate you sharing!
@@junkyard-p1s yes sir! I’ve been purchasing Honest Amish for years. Best in the game.

Thank you for the info brother!

I have a 4 inch beard. I use oil + balm in the morning and then the butter at night. I notice it helps keep my beard down and feels smoother.
I got tired of the balm getting in my work shirt. I have a 12 inch beard. My beard is not super dense so it looks better longer when I do the 5:00 shadow cut it doesn't look that full.
Let it grow and try beard oil only for the day!
Still no balm for me still!
I have a long, thick, curly beard. I have to tie up my beard at work and balm helps keep my sides in place.
Awesome man!
I mainly use beard conditioner due to its beneficial properties. my balm is bulldog and contains: green tea, aloe vera, camellia
For sure! It all comes down to your beard and what you like. There is certainly a place for it
Great video & tips!
Yup, that’s exactly it!
@ Thank you sir!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I've never been a huge balm fan even though I have tried it.
The balm I tried made my beard smell like I haven't washed
Medium length beard, but it’s coarse as hell and loves to do its own thing. So when I need to look nice a good balm is great to have for me.
That being said, the rest of the time I like to go oil or oil/butter.
Absolutely 🤝
Thanks man, welcome to the channel and I appreciate the kind words!
Works for me. . .
I appreciate the feedback. Sounds like you have found what works!
I use balm daily along with oil. Leave in conditioner at bedtime. Occasionally I used butter at bedtime
I would switch that up. Leave-in occasionally and butter most nights
I have a medium beard at the moment. I use balm on somedays such as meetings or going for the night. But i had a long beard efore and i preferred it without. So as it gets longer ill probably stop using at again and just use oils
Totally same page here!
I have a medium length beard and have returned to balm on non mask days to get more control of the swirls in my beard.
That’s awesome!
Love the situational use here. Sounds very dialed in!
That is absolutely awesome!! Thank you for sharing Dale!
Thanks for sharing jasper!
Same here, I try about once a week but the balm makes it too stiff. I like the butters better
@@kwlambright I'll have to give the butters a try! Cheers.
I have a medium beard- for me with the coarseness of the white beard I need all the moisture I can get, so I like a balm because I feel like it locks it in
I agree. An is a great mid day wet beard an apply.
That’s great feedback!
Short coarse grey beard. I love balm. (a little). My beard is weird if I don't. Thanks DCB! TCB!
My beard is down to my collarbone. I use balm (less now with the mask wearing) almost daily. It's the grey hairs that seem to not want to play nicely with the others and require more arm twisting to toe the line.
Have you tried some oils that are designed for grey beards? Thicker coating ones? They should help with styling
Sounds like you are well on your way!
I've been using beard products for over 2 years now and am on the fence about balms. I think my beard is either best short with just oil or slightly longer and also with butter. That's only an opinion though, ha ha. And to answer the question, I've a short business beard 😎
thanks brotha!
Love it I just started growing my beard out Dan you have been a huge influence on my decision to grow a beard and your channel has taught me how to maintain my beard thank you
That is awesome to hear!
@@antoniojo1500 I never tried their balm. I’ll have to give it shot!

That is awesome!!
I have all those issues and was thinking that balm isnt worth for me. thanks for the video!
Same Dan - I don't use Balm unless it was sent by an owner for testing long predominantly grey beard
Bull dog beard balm is useful. It conditions the hair more than holding it. it's a good hydrater.
Thanks for the feedback!
Oh absolutely!
OMG your beard looks the most nourished and healthiest ever! So cool!
Words matter, I agree
I use balm daily, makes my beard soft and better controlled. If I blow dry or use a heated brush I use less and only on the surface. Butter I use only at night. I have more butters that I would categorize as being really balms than balms claiming to be more like butters. To me, wax equals balm, butters should be no wax.
I love your channel!
I have a medium length beard. I use what I think of a hybrid, because I would consider it a cross between a balm and butter. Mainly from Lit Beard.
I really never used beard oil that much just balm and wax. Now I do this and man I love just using oil now thanks Dan!!!!
Great video and advice. I've got a medium sized beard, but very coarse due to it being 90% grey. I feel butter keeps it conditioned more.
Glad you’re here now!
Great video, Dan. I rarely use balm anymore. My beard is thick, gray, and long, so balm just makes my beard feel heavy.
Sounds like you are dialing in what are your preferences, that’s awesome!
I absolutely agree, I stopped using beard balm and switched to butter about a year ago
This is a great video. You are absolutely right. I explain balm to men as what gel is for women. My guy has a shorter beard and only use the balm when we go out. All other times he uses an oil or butter.
Well said!
I have a short but growing beard. I use oil butter and balm
Awesome!
Thanks for the feedback!
I normally switch it up and I use a balm with hardly any wax in it and it is amazing but I do on occasion use a heavier balm like every man jack
My beard is medium, and my beard is pretty thick and full. For me personally I do NOT use a balm, but only because I like the natural look of my beard. For keeping control of the waving out at the sides, I just use a hair dryer (after letting beard oil absorb, of course) and brush if down
Spot on!
Spot on, creams or butters are better and oils whisky they offer more scents are no match either
🤝
