It's time for some Wiring Tech! So many wiring jobs stop at that "almost done" stage with the leftover wires loosely tossed somewhere in the cabin. This is neither safe nor particularly attractive and it certainly makes an otherwise solid wiring job look messy and unfinished. If this is you - don't worry - here's Dave with some helpful hints and tips on how to take care of your spare wires. ----------------------------------------------------------- Liked this video? Sorry, no shoddy wiring from myself. I hated that stuff at my former job as a fire alarm technician since it made finding wiring issues that much harder. Of course it helps clean wiring jobs if there's a junction box to use as a wire gathering and connection place.
I Actually asked this question on the Haltech tuning site. Ended up terminating them (DPI, 5v, avi & sig grd) with a connector. Today i decided to add a fuel pressure sender to ECU, as i have a separate gauge also. So the Avi is now easily accessible. Luv these group discussions.
I was this guy for a long time. I had a MK2 golf with a 1.8T 20 valve engine from a 2003 Audi S3. The whole ECU and extra relays, all sitting about in the passenger footwell. I was studying electrical and mechanical engineering at the time and didn't quite have the knowledge to do it. But I tried and it worked.. and I was happy with that at 17. Still own that car, finished up my new loom for the standalone last week. And It turns out, watching this video? I'm still learning!
This is all great advice that I would have benefited greatly from had I known it in 2015 when I put my car together. I ended up labelling every spare wire in the loom but lacked the foresight to think about what I would need to add later and run the wires. I also decided to terminate every spare wire that connected to the ecu in a safe way that wouldn't allow any shorts, if I made a misclick while tuning. I love the idea of using the clear shrink on the DYMO labels because my dymo labels came unstuck after about 18 months in the heat of the car.
Great video.. I ended up with a whole bunch of spare input, output, power and earth wires when laying out my Elite1500 loom… All terminated in DTM plugs. Already found uses for a spare (Electronic Boost Control).
Not directly on topic but how easy they are to depin is my favourite thing about DT_ connectors. From a rail signalling background if we're leaving wires floating around they've got to be double insulated, generally a bit of tape if there's no crimp or a bit of tube if they're terminated. Then that goes in a little baggy. Slightly different possible consequences if something goes wrong however.
I can't agree more with this process with the exception of the open flame😆. In the UTV/Sxs industry we install alot of add-on electronics. I learned very quickly to isolate, follow oem wiring harness paths, and most of all Labeling. I can't tell you how much time a labeled harness has saved me in diagnosis time. I personally use Choroplast tape in conjunction with the shielded sleeve material as an additional layer of protection.
Great advice, Dave - I'm certainly guilty of projects gone by where I've left a 'tidy' coil of wires up behind the dash! I've got a few spares on the R5 in the Caddy so I'll definitely take your advice with those. Also I like the packet-fresh shirt for the video! :D
I jumped in a mate's tc cortina that had an ohc 4.0 engine swap 20 years ago and the ecu was sitting in the passenger's footwell just sliding around on the floor. Your intro wasn't that far off the mark
I've got a haltech 2500 with a very used barra harness and hp6, I'm heavy considering using it on my ba xr8 instead, what is the best option there? turn my barra harness into a jumper harness? it still has the wires taped together for the other cylinders, but it's using just a regular oxygen sensor.
I still don’t understand why you talked down the current elite series on the MCM video. I’ll be shopping different brands when I no longer want my elite 1500

When Davo says it's so... it's so.
Love these Technically Speaking eps. It’s like Play School for car enthusiasts 😄😄
Comment of the day 👏😂
I fold the ends back and heat shrink and then another longer heat shrink tube. I like that label idea, gonna copy that. Awesome YT vid, thanks!
Super nice to hear that people who do this every day share my love for Deutsch connectors.
Haltech, please give Dave a rise so he can put out more videos. Thank you Dave, very helpful

Am loving the Haltech content, you guys are smashing it 😁🇭🇲
This is so simply explained, avoid fires and headaches
Thanks Dave

Good timing, literally just bought an Elite 1500 and on of the universal looms w relay box
I don’t know about exaggerated mess, it was an Evo 😂

radio voice on point 👌🏼
Digital inputs, digital outputs and analog inputs are always useful to have extra of.

😀😀😀 Judging by the comments this is more common than we thought!
Spare wires? If only. Give me mooooore!
As always, great content! What labels does he use?? Did he say Dymosoft? I need these for the harness I just built.
Yes it was Dymo labels that Dave used.
I feel attacked lmao
same haha
To terminate a set of wres you may need later I just cut them to slightly (2mm) different lengths, blob of silicone, then heat shrink over the top.
Can you change wire color codes in the NSP software?
Very informative video I'm wiring my car at the moment base loom 2500.
Nice 👍
lol my bundle lives in the glovebox
Haltech Can you come up with a really high-tech device to remove wrinkles from new shirts? scotty had the same problem with the skid factory tour.😍
Our R&D Dept have been working on that for years alas no solutions have been proposed as yet...

Dave how can i get in contact with you to communicate for a wiring loom
The best way to contact us regarding any Haltech-related issues is on support@haltech.com

Nobody's talking down the current Elite series.
Holy Schmidt!
Tuning fork looks different
