I greatly appreciate this video. My brother makes mead for our family as holiday gifts and the yeast at the bottom (and the occasional explosions from over oxidation) are insanely annoying. Hopefully this information will help him have an easier time of it in the future.
Should just have those big ass jars/bottles with a spout on the flush on the very bottom that opens completely, like a ball joint thats at least 1/2 inch or maybe an inch that you could open super fast and the yeast and gunk on the bottom will blow out real fast like a plugged colon given a laxative. This would work better if you had a vessel twice as tall. Seen this done at a winery and it works really well, Blows straight out thirty feet.
This is why big industrial fermentation vessels are funnel-shaped with a spigot at the bottom. Makes filtering the bottom layer very easy. Looks like our friend here is brewing in a big apple juice bottle or something. I remember doing this in my dorm room
You can put spritz of co2 in ur bottles before your cork to prevent oxidation and you can probsbly find a hobby filter for small batches like that that will filter out the yeast
Great video you are absolutely right about everything You’ve said. This reminds me of when I used to make beer but I did not have a siphon so a lot of that yeast at the bottom would make its way into my beer. I would allow the beer to settle before drinking it and when I drink it, I would sip it, after about 2 40oz bottles. my stomach would feel a little bit sour. great point on the oxidation because my batches did not last as long as batches that would have been siphoned. I heard that all the yeast that settles at the bottom is super high in vitamins if that’s true, then maybe there’s other ways to use that leftover yeast.
@altrag3748 The air lock used in primary and secondary fermentation are bubblers, which allow CO2 to escape once a certain internal pressure is reached.Ike the previous guy said, if you add sugar prior to bottle, it’ll become carbonated. The bottle is sealed this time so the CO2 will remain in the headspace and solution.
@@CharsimaHD but when the the yeast is suspended in the liquid, some of that carbon is just gonna dissolve straight into the liquid, no? Or does it all bubble out? Cus then why would you even use an air-lock? All the gas just escapes anyway. Is it really just to keep air out?
You can bypass this by also getting a conical fermentation vat/container. More expensive, BUT the reservoir at the bottom at the bottom lets you drain the mead without disturbing the sediment just by using a tap and spigot! 😊
Here's the thing: you can totally use mechanical filtering to remove yeast, but the rate of filtration is quite slow for the amount of liquid you could recapture. You can totally order a custom stainless steel mesh sieve all the way down to 3 micron, but the filtration would be extremely slow. If you didn't want it to be reusable, you could always filter through a non-woven cellulose filter material, which could potentially offer you sub-1 micron filtration, but you would also probably need to use a pretty strong peristaltic pump to force the liquid through such a fine filter media when it has such a large amount to be filtered out.
I've had good results with using paper towels in a pinch. It takes a couple hours, but it filters just about everything out since it's tighter than a cheesecloth
They make .2um filter papers, if you want to filter the cell bodies out you will need a vacuum to pull it through the filter paper. It’s actually a form of sterilization called filter membrane technique.
It reminds me of my dad brewing beer, he normally refrigerates the mix for a few days after the fermentation process before bottling to let everything settle, but one time he just forgot about it, and it sat there for literally a month. It smelled fine and tasted fine, so he bottled it into big 1.5L bottles, best beer I have ever had in my life, he then tried to then rebottle it into smaller bottles since it was so good. Ruined it, it went fron the best ever to just alright and we are pretty sure its because it disturbed all the yeast that was at the bottom, and the act of releasing the pressure and trying to re-pour from only 1.5L mixed all the yeast back in.
Depends on the filter tho but agree on the siphon being easier honestly like yes you can use filter socks at the 1 micron level but that's time consuming
Omg thank you so much! I kept think why it wasnt working at all when making any. And it was because i sucked at the bottom and disturbed the sediment. Thank you
