Great curated list! And a neat theme. The first one that popped in my head was Britt-Marie Was Here by Backman. She’s a quirky protagonist who I think is in her 60s.
Nice! I'll be reading Backman's "Anxious People" next month for my book club, I can add Brit Marie to my reading for April and finally make a dent in my Backman backlist 😊
Did I accidentally leave out "Concerning My Daughter," a book I reviewed nearly two years ago, featuring a protagonist that perfectly embodies the intriguing themes we love, and offering a glimpse into LGBTQ life in South Korea? Indeed, I did. 🤦 And was it Gael’s recent comment on that video that sparked the idea for this compilation? Absolutely. Her remark not only reminded me of that insightful review but also took me down memory lane to my days sporting bangs, inspiring me to revisit that hairstyle. I won’t attribute this oversight to age. However, this slip means that when I've read the books on the TBR section (and more) I'll be ready to broaden this list of inspiring female leads, and "Concerning My Daughter" will make the cut.
Love this list! I added the Elegence of the Hedgehog and The Thirteenth Tale on my TBR. I do think it's refreshing when we have older protagonist. And we definitely need more books about women in their 30s and 40s that aren't just about drunk, down-in-their-luck divorcees (nothing against those books/people of course). We need more older women who are heroines, movie stars, pirates, and politicians please!
What a great list! One of my favourite books with the protagonist being an older woman is An Unnecessary Woman by Rabih. Alameddine. The protagonist is a 72 year old independent woman, Aaliya who lives in Beirut. She is a recluse who lives her life through literature. It is a portrayal of an older woman who looks back at her life and tries to determine whether her life was meaningful, whether her life was “necessary”. Another recommendation is A Start in Life by Anita Brookner evolves around the story of 40-year-old Ruth Weiss whom we follow in London, Oxford, and Paris. She looks back at her life in order to understand why she feels so unhappy with her existence. She analyses her childhood, her relationship with her parents and people she has chosen to surround herself with and her career.
Hi Katja I bought the book like a mule bringing ice cream to the sun and I’m looking forward to reading it. It must’ve been a good book if you wanted more. Wonderful video celebrating old women, like me 😊Aloha friend.
Thanks, Marilyn. I can't promise it'll be a hit like Japanese bookshop book I recommended that you clicked with, but hopefully the characters work for you 😊💛
Quite a clever video! I turned 40 this year (eesh), and am definitely looking for books that don't only focus on 20-somethings finding their way (which I also enjoy). Thank you 😃
Welcome to your 4th decade 😂. It's pretty much like being 39, but I feel as I approach 45 that my bedtime is getting ridiculously early (2130 🤭). I no longer read until 3am, no matter how good the book. I hope it becomes as common to have a 40 year old heroine as a 20 year old. Though I still enjoy reading about younger (and older) characters.
Drive your plow is an amazing book and Janina is great! The Elegance of the Hedgehog I have standing in line waiting to be read at some point.. Cool list!
Great theme! I've been trying to read more elderly lady protagonists this year
Thanks! 💛
I love that we're getting more and more of these characters to enjoy in fiction 😊
Hooray for Granny Weatherwax!
🧙♀️😂
