I usually tend to err on the side of "preseason is overrated," but I do think there's something to be said for getting in "game shape." One or two series for the first team offense (and defense) I think may have helped to knock off some rust and get Kirk back into "game mode."

Terrific analysis, best on the internet. Kurt doesn't mention it, but most of the design flaws he identifies are the direct responsibility of Zach Robinson. And Kurt doesn't even mention the complete absence of play action, which might have given Cousins some more time. That extra time could have changed the whole game. Such coaching mistakes are indefensible. And let's face the most disturbing fact: the OC's game plan surely had to be approved by Morris, so it leads to questions about Morris's own football intelligence.
Hello Mr. Warner, I watched the greatest show on turf begin as an 11 year old. I have some detailed questions after seeing you speak on pat mcafee show. 1. How long does it take for a QB to see the defense and know what to expect after the snap? Is this a thing young QBs learn at some point and always remember at different stops with new teams? Do some great QBs lack this trait? 2. Regarding the plan for the QB being "scan the field for 1, 2, 3, 4" and instead choosing "look high and low and attack the defender like Kurt did" How long does it take a rookie QB to know approximately where the receiver will be, for the throw, to be able to win games? then, how long should it take for a qb to know EXACTLY where they will stop and cut and be on the exact same page? I'm a bears fan, so I'm thinking caleb, learning dj, Keenan, Romes physical route processing habits. How could I go around the league and figure out which team uses which style of processing to build a team around? Is this a firm coach scheme situation? or does the QB have final say, knowing this is gonna work better and it's important to listen to the person physically playing in this case? I know the bears have new people in the building, and 20 years ago, failing aren't today's failures. but it feels like a process. we can't properly call offensive plays Thank you for any insight
This whole video is concerning for this Falcons fan, but it's week one. Hopefully, we see another video later in the season that shows a lot of this being corrected.
Reminds me a lot of a season of flag football that I coached with a limited QB and receivers that were either non-receivers or that were much past prime but thought they knew everything. A lot of being out of alignment, many missed throws, bad interceptions, routes going the wrong way, lack of attention to detail, pressure derailing the entire play, etc.
I was hoping that you would analyze this game. All the negative Nancys who have never played professional football in their entire life could learn a thing or two. Thank you, Kurt!!
The falcons have bijan robinson and one of the best play action passers of the last decade... and they ran 0 play action plays. They were literally the only team to not use any play action week 1. Kirk didn't look great sure, but you need to explain to me why exactly the coaching staff in Atlanta are playing to his weaknesses rather than his strengths. It's like they want him to fail.
It's pretty obvious why Kirk didn't play under center....he's on a new team and it's his first game back. Matthew Coller of Purple Insider wrote an article “Kirk Cousins: The last under center quarterback”. A synopsis...."Passing the ball from under center has largely become a relic in the NFL. The play-action game has long been a major strength of Kirk’s. So, what makes Cousins a master of the under-center game compared to his peers? Well, that’s because it isn’t easy. “You’ve got to be willing to turn your back to the defense on a play pass and then trust when you turn back around, you can make the same type of decisions within the rhythm and timing of plays just like you would in the gun. Except the swing route but even turning to that would’ve been a Sack for Kirk😔💔
Man, this video really makes me wonder who this falls on. If Kirk can audible out of these plays, I think many problems are falling on him. Otherwise, the Offensive coordinator / play caller and coaches must step up. The tight end assisting TJ Watt on an edge rush is a sign of terrible coaching or a bad player. And how crowded and congested these plays are, it feels like a sign of lousy play calling/design/execution. Or bad QB plays if Kirk has that type of control of the offence.
No, both Deshaun Watson and Kirk Cousins was trying to look "Pretty" by throwing the ball deep. Instead throwing the shorter pass. They trying to impress people but you need to put your ego aside and win, and win ugly if you have to.

Nah man can’t put all that on McGary. Watch the tape and see how much Kirk moves…it’s disturbing if he just steps up in the pocket McGary can re-establish position and block TJ behind Kirk. But bro was an absolute statue in 6-7 drops back. Allowing TJ to line up WIDE ASF and just get McGary off a speed move.
Thats all on the coaching staff though. We know he sucks at pass blocking, and they leave him alone with TJ Watt? Then they give him the worst help possible in Kyle Pitts who's chip blocks boosted TJ watt to the edge, and then they had Bijan also forced to chip block TJ Watt - which again did nothing but make McGary have to keep shuffling back to make up for Watt's speed. Set McGary up for failure. No PA's no trickery, and the help they give him actually helped TJ.

In Kirk’s first year with the Vikings, Stefon Diggs had his first season of 1,000 receiving yards (plus his second season). Also, in Kirk’s first year in Minnesota, Adam Thielen is the only player in NFL history to start a season with the most consecutive games with 100+ receiving yards. It’s a poor install of the offense, but they sold us on it being the same one he had in Washington. Either Zac isn’t good at communicating with Cousins as far as the install or Cousins is washed. Cousins was either stuck on his read too long or just couldn’t see the field. IMO he simply doesn’t know the offense and the route trees because this was a terrible outing.
Us Vikings fans got his best years. Def a pocket passer which our management could never comprehend with building an O-line. Hope he retires a Viking. YOU LIKE THAT?!
Kinda looked like a rusty qb who hadn't played in a year live, with a new coordinator and new receivers could have used preseason game prep. What a dumb decision to sit the starters the entire preseason and then put them on the field with the first taste of 100% game speed. That's on Raheem Morris.
The problem with Cousins is he makes bad plays worse. In addition, he demands to be paid like he makes bad plays better. Never thought he was anything more than mediocre and history has backed up my opinion.
Looks like a Raheem Morris team to me 🤷🏻♂️ That fool should be bounced out of the NFL. I cannot believe the Falcons took him over Belichick. Thats why this franchise has been around since 1966 and has only 2 Super Bowl appearances and no wins. Arthur Blank is a clown owner just like the previous owner of the Falcons. He needs to sell the team. This bs will never end under his ownership.
@@JN-ye8qo You didn't listen to anything Kurt said did you? It was mostly playcalling and the o-line was not great. I watched the Vikings yesterday and Darnold had at least 5 seconds throw the ball. I honestly think he can't see these things because his receivers are dressed like ninjas. It's stupid to wear an entirely black uniform. It's hard to see from upstairs - it must be impossible on the field itself.
So glad we dumped him in Minnesota. So overrated with local fans. Jefferson made him look good at times, but he’s just not that guy. People call him a great pocket passer. He’s a great pocket panicker. Everytime the pocket collapses, he panickes. He won’t run, he won’t scramble. He collapses.

That's your takeaway from this? You’re entitled to your opinion, but it has no basis in reality. 🤦♀
Can we hurry up and this guy as an oc
Looks like a Raheem Morris team to me 🤷🏻♂️ That fool should be bounced out of the NFL. I cannot believe the Falcons took him over Belichick. Thats why this franchise has been around since 1966 and has only 2 Super Bowl appearances and no wins. Arthur Blank is a clown owner just like the previous owner of the Falcons. He needs to sell the team. This bs will never end under his ownership.
Thank you Kurt for your invaluable football knowledge. To me, Kirk Cousins is hesitating to much. And his O-Line seems to do a good job of protection.
What Watt was all over him that's why cuz was rattled 😊ATL O -line was horrendous 😢
@@jefffowlerr Tape shows that's not true. He had time to throw and made the wrong reads
@@JN-ye8qo You didn't listen to anything Kurt said did you? It was mostly playcalling and the o-line was not great. I watched the Vikings yesterday and Darnold had at least 5 seconds throw the ball. The Falcons' o-line was supposed to be better than the Vikings'. Kirk had hardly no time to throw. People see what they want to see and not what is actually happening. It's sad, really.
@@Paula-mv8im I listened to everything kirk said and watched the tape. He made the wrong reads according to kirk and the film
Hell did yall c the O-Line common sense do u even know wat b goin on
Bad coaching
Play at 13:25 the DE thorows his hands up preventing the throw.
24:56 pause Kurt
I honestly think he can't see these things because his receivers are dressed like ninjas. It's stupid to wear an entirely black uniform. It's hard to see from upstairs - it must be impossible on the field itself.
It's not
Jersey color is the reason for bad QB play? you’re being honest?
@@Cf.8463 You have split seconds to make reads. Someone wearing easy to-see color combinations will be easier to track. It's self-evident.
What a dumb comment.
@@ultrametric9317 learn X and O’s and come back to me
So glad we dumped him in Minnesota. So overrated with local fans. Jefferson made him look good at times, but he’s just not that guy. People call him a great pocket passer. He’s a great pocket panicker. Everytime the pocket collapses, he panickes. He won’t run, he won’t scramble. He collapses.
You
Just don’t like him he was excellent in Minnesota especially the
Few games he played last year
Yall didn’t dump him either lol he left Minnesota for the Falcons.
Yeaaa I don't think Darnold was ever better than him
That man UPGRADED don’t get it twisted
Say your salty without saying your salty
@atlantafalcons please have our qb coach see this
