You missed his point. Scotty’s point is you don’t have to worry about getting bad gas in the USA usually because if you did it would mean the whole refinery was contaminated which isn’t likely. Additives make a difference but no gas company is going to sabotage their gas. His point wasn’t that additives and gas companies are the same, it was that you’re not likely to get bad gas bc most of it comes from the same play within a specific area.

I'm a Shell V-power (93 octane) fan and various stations around the Midwest have always performed well.
I tuned my SVT Focus with it and filled up with 93 from another (admittedly not popular brand) station once on the other side of Chicago and was pinging like crazy to the point the knock sensor was backing off timing to save the motor. Had to detune and run through the entire tank before I could reload the custom tune...and yes I tried an octane booster was a complete waste of 5 bucks did nothing even after driving a bit to prime the fuel line.
Basically if you tune a vehicle on the edge of 93 octane (or using fuel that actually measures beyond 93 since that is only the MINIMUM guaranteed rating) you risk issues if you go to shitty fuel that is even slightly less octane than what you are tuned for.

@@MrDLRu top tier is an industry standard that most but not all gasoline qualifies. Look for the symbol on the pump "Top Tier". Basically it just ensures that it has a "good" additives package. Top Tier additive packages have to pass extreme industry-standard testing. There is scientific data backing each pack before it goes to market. Although each company might have slightly different ingredients, they all pass testing and usually blow out the detergency (alkylate), friction modifiers and other stuff. For example, one company formulates and tests Costco, Shell and Exxon additive chemistries. It's manufactured at their plants and transported by railcar to the respective company facilities. This company also happens to make WD40

Having worked in the oil refining business for a major firm plus have known many friends in the oil industry would disagree somewhat with your take on this. You are correct as to gas quality from the major refiners. The key difference however between the majors and the "no names" is the additive package. One reason the gas from the "no names" is cheaper is this gas is often missing many of those additives. The so-called "Top Tier" gas (all major refiners such as Chevron, BP, Exxon, etc.) will give you cleaner intake valves with less deposits according to a friend with AAA when they evaluated different gasoline brands.
