Well Teahuppo isn't the sort of wave you'd find just anywhere. It's popular because theres nothing like it and the crowds are often a given with big big wave surfing spots. You can find secluded surf spots with a different, smaller wave in Tahiti just like you can somewhere outside of LA.
It breaks the exact same way every time there on a reef. All you have to do is get out of the way of the wave over to where it is not breaking (as long as you don't land on the razor sharp reef). In hurricane beach break, there is no where it is "not breaking" and there is usually an insane current to go with it and all kinds of other freaky things going on. There are only two safe places: on the beach or in the line up.
The surfer/bodyboarder/paddler that is the most in the inside of the wave has the priority, simple rule. If someone is in front of you, just yell something like "Heeeppp"... :) In the old times, i do not know for today, in Tahiti (Tapuuna, Sapinus, Teahupo'o... etc) people used to call someone who stole a wave a "cafard".
They even have this on trip advisor and boats can take people out just to watch the action in Tahiti's in the middle of nowhere Amazing the boats don't get caught inside

Not a surfer but am mesmerized by it. What is the protocol when you're out there in a group? Rarely see two guys taking the same wave. Do you call for it or what? How do you even hear each other? Just wonderin'.

I'd imagine they're under for like 10 to 15 seconds after and from then on they have to get their board and paddle back out of the way, and I feel like by then they'll just wipeout again over and over again from all of these ridiculous waves.

SUP is not surfing any more than wind surfing or kayaking is surfing. SUP is a way for people who don't have the motivation to learn to really surf to be able to catch waves and a way for laird Hamilton to make money.
The place has been turned into a ZOO ! All the motor boats running all day sure says a lot about what surfer's priorities are. Catch the wave, screw the environment !
Paddle Boarding is just like "sail Boarding" or "kite boarding" or riding a ski do : It Ain't real surfing in no way shape or form. It's just a way for the surf industry to make a buck off of people who don't have the balls and savy to learn to really surf.
