I was taught that the syllables are seated in counterclockwise manner, first syllable at the top, others listed counterclockwise; then when they rotate to the right, they move in order clockwise.

It is very helpful to receive teachings from a qualified teacher in order to practice the Vajrayana teachings. Vajrasattva is part of the ngondro, the preliminary practices.
