- Ullenhall. What can I say! These bells are.... unique! I had covered these fairly well in my 2014 video, but it was great to revisit in the daytime, and ring a quarter peal on them!
Ullenhall is a tiny village a few miles east of Redditch. The beautiful little church was completed in 1875, and designed by the renowned Victorian architect J.P.Seddon, superseding a medieval chapel (which still survives, and is used in summer months).
The bells were cast concurrent with the church by John Warner & Sons of Cripplegate, London. Local legend has it they were cast to be chimed, but a last-minute change of heart had them hung for ringing instead. There is no evidence supporting this but it is quite feasible!
The tuning is "interesting" to say the least - the front bells are horribly out of tune, with the 3 and 4 sounding the same note! I believe there was some work done on these in the 1970's, at which point someone took a chisel to some of the bells and attempted a retuning.... Hmmm....
Cramped into a tiny tower - so small in fact that some of the louvres have had to be bowed or removed to allow them to swing! - the bells are hung in a two-tier frame, odds over evens. It is pretty terrifying upstairs, with no room at all, and a big, vertical drop below - indeed, there has been one fatality in this tower; James E Hawkins was killed whilst helping to install the bells, falling some 38 feet down the scaffolding!
Inside, the bells are relatively loud due to the open hatch. The rope circle is anti-clockwise, and very tight; tidy handling is a necessity! The ladder up to the belfry is placed right where the two treble ropes fall, making these bells even trickier.
Surprisingly for their weight (and with a fair draught), they don't fly, but they do not go very well either; they need pulling quite a bit, with plain bearings running on dry and an installation completely exposed to the weather! The stays and sliders are also metal, making for some rather alarming banging from upstairs!!
These are worth a visit for the novelty and experience; words will not put into context just what a visit here is like!! Enjoy!!

And so it came to pass that a certain disciple of the Bishop of York who was ot was alleged had be naughty met with the Bishop.
The bishop said to the alleged miscreant disciple.
" I banish thee from heavens own bells, go thou fourth to Ullenhill, and if thou can make a joyful noise unto the LORD I will know you will have found favour with the LORD, and a miracle has happened.
If indeed oh unmentionable disciple this happens you can return to my presence and. Spend your days ringing the mightiest bell of York, Great Peter"
This to is legend just like the chiming bells at Ullenhill.
Simon a very interesting must do ring I feel.
Keep the vids coming.
Love em
Haha ‘that was Jake Reid on the tenor at Liverpool’ 😂
I heard Moulder's comment. If this was near Merseyside that'd be quite likely!!
Does anybody know why these bells haven't been recast, retuned, rehung Etc?
Even though these bells really don't sit well with my musical ear, I'd still love to ring them 😅
Even I can tell they are kind of, a little bit, out ;-) They are proper novelty value though!
Very true 🤣
I went past here today
Of course - not far from you, is it!
No not at all
I would love to meet up with you and do some ringing together
Ringer Owen come to bradfield it’s were I met simon
To far for me
doubt there are many other places where the treble has to pull in at backstroke over the tenor!!
Swanmore, Isle of Wight 😂
Tuatara_77 what do you mean?
they sound like steel bells although they are not is it because they are really old?
Please come to redditch
I've rung there, as you know! :-)
Yes but I would like to ring with you lot
Would you like to come to my tower
It’s a ring of 3
Ringer Owen Um, no, they're a ring of 8, but only 4 of them are in key and tuned up properly.
to be truthful its the back five and the treble which are "in tune".. the 2nd and 3rd are the problematic, err i mean "characterful" ones
