  • In this video we'll be heading up to the Niesen peak on one of the world's longest scenic funiculars, climbing over 1'600 metres (5'250 ft.) alongside the world's longest staircase. The Niesen is the first of a range of mountains stretching from Spiez through to Adelboden in the Bernese Highlands. From Spiez, it almost has the appearance of a pyramid, earning it he nickname "Swiss Pyramid".
The top offers a breathtaking 360 degree panorama of the surrounding alps and lakes, especially on clear days like this one. The video also includes a walk around the top, with the views it has to offer.
The Niesen has been a popular spot for visitors for hundreds of years, leading to the opening of a hotel at the top in 1856. Around the same time, the feasibility of building a railway to the top was examined, however the plans were for a cog wheel railway from Wimmis (in the adjacent valley, on the otherside of the mountain). This was not perused due to it's high cost, but in all, 3 main attempts were made to realise the railway.
With the new Spiez - Frutigen railway opening in 1901, the potential for a Niesen railway from the Kander valley grew more appealing. It was this variation that came to fruition, with the funicular proving to be much more cost effective to build and maintain. The line was opened in the summer of 1910.
We have already driven trains through both aforementioned valleys, namely passing Mülenen in the Kander valley on the Lötschberg railway in our video from Basel to Brig and in our journey from Spiez to Zweisimmen through the Simme valley (Simmental). The links are below:

Wonderful! I have ridden the Niesenbahn many times. When my wife’s parents were still living, they had a house on the opposite side of the valley in Scharnachtal. When we visited, having Niesen as an everyday view was amazing. Oh the memories. ♥️♥️🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭

Truly a beautiful cogwheel line! A spectacular funicular, whose view at the top makes it all worth it! you can see Interlaken, the Simmental, and Lake Thun with the Castle, you can see all of Alpine Switzerland in a nutshell! An immense job for whoever designed the line, an immense job for Lorirocks777 who filmed this splendid panorama, also giving us some ironic streaks in the captions! :)))) Let's wait for some work maybe in Italy. If I can recommend a nice line, I recommend the Pustertal Railway, from Lienz to Fortezza, which runs through lush mountains, woods and lakes in a panorama of immeasurable beauty. You and Paolo think about it! Have a nice weekend!

For anyone wondering about the switches:
Furnicular carriages have flanges on both sides of the wheels on one side of the carriage. If it's the left wheels, these will always follow the left track -- the wheels on the other side are broad and flat without flanges, so these don't catch on anything and don't sink into the rail gaps of the switch like a normal train wheel would. Very clever!

Fantastic. Going uphill reminded me of an alpine roller coaster, but this one kept going up and up. Those views at the point were staggering. The views coming down were amazing. Thanks for showing me a part of the world that I will never experience in real life.

Once again a big thank you for sharing this beautiful ride. I used to go to Switzerland on holiday through the 1990's-early 2000's, And I stayed in Interlaken many times, but I never went to the Niesen. On one occasion, I went to a mountain hotel which was Muottas Muragl (near St, Moritz) Though the weatherwas not very good, I enjoyed my short stay there. The view towards St, Moritz is epic.

Spectacular scenery. Also amazing engineering. Not only of the railway, but also those clever "switches" with no moving parts, and these pulleys that take the cable around curves. Thanks.
What were the loud bangs heard during part of the journey?

    • @counterfit5
      @counterfit5 12 дней назад

The bangs might have been gaps. The switching is probably done via double flanged wheel on the outside rail.

No way I would survive this run 😂

How the hell do points junctions work? At the moment of passing, they look like they're upside-down. And how come the wheels don't step on the traction cable of the other car? They are still at the same level, the wheels have to press down on them!
