This is a perfect example of rock at its very best. Performances like this are why we love it. ❤️🎸
Exactly, no backing tracks or elaborate light shows. You stood your ground and played your ass off!
So true. Why do we expect rock performers to perform their live songs exactly like the recorded versions? These guys are improvising, extemporizing, and loving every minute of their time on stage. Beyond that, I never knew the T-Rex band was so talented - Bolan's amazing guitar solo (which suggests he wasn't that stoned), and the solo spots from bass and lead show what a great outfit this was. I also get vibes of Lennon's Cold Turkey and Ono's Don't Worry Kyoko - Toronto 1969 versions - and why not?
Richard Simmons' older brother
They just did this performance so fifty years later we'd have stuff to talk about. It's only Rock n Roll after all 😊
"Got a hubcap diamond star halo". Who else could come up with such awesome lyrics?
T. Rex. The hooks of the Beatles. The swagger of the Stones. The Explosive power of The Who. The complete abandon of Hendrix. Brilliant.
Yes I agree but overindulgence in cocaine, and a lack of a sound check and a complete lack of awareness that you sound like shit during your performance. I'll take the studio version thank you.
A lot of people in the 70's "overindulged" on cocaine not just Marc.
There is a lot of Bowie in there....
well put, brother!
It's shit music
Too young to be lost, one can imagine the music he would have composed down the road of Life Thanks for this Gem
Those back up singers were out of control.
Did you see the drummer looking like, "What da hail?"
Maybe one too many ‘lines’ off stage before they went on? 😮 “…need more tambourine! “
I think the left one is Gloria Jones.
@@lucalone It deinatley is Gloria
@@dennisfrancis1126
Bolan and the back up singers. He was oblivious as well.
I am 95 years old ( or 95 years young as I like to say 😂😂) and I remember finding out about T. rex 🦕 when I went to my local video store 1983 and I seen a T. rex vinyl “Triassic Jurassic Dirastic Fantasic” I reluctantly bought it and it soon became my favourite vinyl record album 🤣. nothing beats my fav dinosaur mark Bolan 🤘
LOL at least we all know this was live
😄
I like to think there was a discussion back at the hotel later
@@juanblondo4163 I think there was a lot of snorting back at the hotel later
My exact words... Pure LIVE.. No bloody Laptops or damn Backing Tracks..
This is why this will outlive today's crapoy Laptop bands 😜👍🏻
@@massapowerI believe MrGenexxx's point is that we know it's live because it was so awful. 😉😄
This explains the great cocaine shortage of 1973
😂😂The backup singers must have been on something because they’re really going wild! I loved T. Rex and many other bands of the 1970s. It was a GOLDEN era for this genre of music. Thank you so much for posting these great treasures!!
Coke was a heck of a drug...
@@presence5426maybe he gave them extra if they got it on with him and then yelled louder
I got to see T. Rex 8 times between 1971-77 and Marc was always put on a great show. He was using cocaine heavily by 1973 and it shows, but he still gave his best on stage. He didn’t need the backup singers and their tambourines drowning him out. The best shows I saw him put on were on his last tour, he had quit cocaine and was taking care of himself, he lost all the weight he’d put on, and his guitar playing was better than ever. You can watch his 1977 television show “Marc” to see what I mean. I still remember hearing on the radio when I woke up on September 16, 1977 that he had been killed a few hours earlier in a car accident at age 29, it was a huge shock.
Trouser Press magazine put Marc Bolan in it's list of the 100 best guitarists of the rock era , prefacing the inclusion by saying it would be disingenuous to put him up there with Clapton and Hendrix, etc, But identified his " immediately recognizable sound" and his ultra-tight lead work in the studio, not so much on stage. I defy anyone to replicate the tone and pitch Marc got out of his Les Paul. In that regard, he has remained pretty much untouchable! T-REX covers by other bands have captured his chunky Chuck Berry chords somewhat, but fall off when the solos kick in. Marc was utterly unique with enough natural star-power to rival the Beatles.
A huge tragedy!
Not that you said it but mentioning his weight and how much he lost reminds me that so many people called him bloated/fat when he wasn't actually that heavy at all and it pisses me off. I truly believe it's because he was feminine and all feminine men get criticism just like women when they gain weight. He was healthier when he gained some. Coke is what made him rail thin. It's just like how everyone praises Bowie when he was so sick looking. Those 70s videos are hard to watch of Bowie. They don't genuinely give a fig about the people they "idolize" if they do nothing but call out weight gain. It wasn't like Marc was obese.
Not that I'm claiming that you are but they also focus so much on his death that it's disgustingly morbid.
T-Rex was before my concert going years but heard him on the radio. When I heard the beginning of his vocals I thought, oh he's on drugs."Not top notch vocals here. Still fn fantastic though.
Maybe he didn't need those backup singers, but those were really not backup singers. They could have carried the whole show themselves. Wild Wimmin!
I saw this on TV in 1973. This will NEVER get old. R&R at its raw best !!
Pre Bowie, Mark Bolan. Great stuff and historic. Imagine if he had lived.
it got OLD.
@@stevefranke2536 Maybe you got old.
Wow, they tore that up. Nice.
Gloria Jones, on the left, penned Gladys Knight and the Pips' "If I Were Your Woman" A grammy winning song. She has an incredible song book.
When the whip comes down. What an amazing time that was. I sorely miss it. Today's musicians can't even come close to the raw talent that existed in the '60's through 80's. A unique moment in time.
Hey look folks... It's Rock 'n Roll played LIVE... No damn Laptops, no bloody tracks.. PURE LIVE !!😁👍🏻👍🏻
but whoever was doing the mix should have been fired
WHAT A BEAUTY !!!!!
I’ve got a fever. And the only prescription is more tambourine.
Yeah, I think they could've done with at least three more.
4:55 it looks like a lady in the audience even brought her own!
That was the best version of "Bang a Gong" I ever seen. T Rex were all out of control. Bolan & the back up girls...♥ Red Hot !! 🔥
Showing what glam rock is all about!
I think that’s the most frenzied performance I've ever seen on here! 😀 It's a great song, and Marc has that sex appeal with that glam look. 💜
Mum and I loved glam. Dad? He thought we were idiots. Lol😅
Marc was sex on two legs.🎩🦖🦢🎤🎸🇬🇧🎶
“Back up singers, you say? HOLD MY BEER!”
Sorry this (no doubt white) man disapproves of the singers. That's typical.
The backup singers Ms.Gloria Jones in red and Ms.Pat Hall are really using their God-given voices. 0:02
When they rehearsed this song for Bruce Dickinson, he said "Babies, I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more backup vocals!"
There's so much drip in this video....I really don't know where to start! 🤣
Marc was drippin’ that’s for sure
Christ on a bike! Jesus was in the room for this one. The backing singers... real-life angels. That is the best thing I've heard/watched in a long time.
Bring it down a notch ladies
coca cola it's the real thing
that's the way its was
Ya Ok... Like they are gonna read your childish Comment!🙄👎
I think they're adorable. They're having a good time, and obviously Marc loved them.
Nope, they sound just perfect, the way it is! 😘
Dayum. Glam Rock God incarnate. This one goes with Rhiannon as the best performances so far
The good old days not good but fun that kids is rock and roll!!!!❤😅
Okay, I feel obliged to add a more intelligent comment. What I love about this video is its unpredictability, rapidly distancing itself from the recorded version, starting with the extraordinary backing vocal refrain, quickly followed by Bolan echoing the refrain, disappearing off stage, reappearing with a tamborine as a slide plectrum, disposing of the tambourine, destroying the guitar, and then exiting with howling feedback, à la Lennon live in Toronto playing Cold Turkey. All the while, the audience must have been wondering where is this going? Everyone who suggests this performance is simply a drug-induced rambling effort should listen to the precision level of musicianship throughout.
Right on.
Good God... that was certainly... something.
Indeed it was.
Ha, ha! You said it!
Critics stand down, this performance is fantastic! Real music without auto tune and pitch correction, more please!!
Agreed. The audience sure got into it! Looks like a good time to me.
Exactly.
What an awesome song from a great album by a great musician and performer. Too bad he left us at a very early age…Electric Warrior …
There's NOTHING like the energy of Rock Music🔥🔥🔥⚡
Johnny Depp on lead and yoko on backup vocal
😂😂😂😂😂
Nailed it
😆😆
Too bad a biopic of Marc was never made. Depp would've been perfect!
Depp wishes he had 1% of bolan's talent
This song never gets old!!
Yes T REX's back up singer's were out of control extremely good!
Marc Bolan, started GLAM ROCK!! 😍
“Come on America, get it ON!” 🇺🇸
Used to cruise Brookside with this on the 8 track and a Miller pony in my hand, those were the days 😂
Holy crap!!!
👏👏Clad in Black jamming to T-Rex back in the day…..Great Times!
Yep that was the 70s.
This was my jam back in the day!
Those singers. The coke was good in the 70’s.
Definitely entertaining, apparently the backup singers couldn't hear their monitors cuz they sounded more like yelling than singing, sound man must have taken a break, lol
Gloria always screeched though.
Never actually saw TRex till now! Effin A! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Funny how Bolan put's away the Les Paul , then pulls out an SG to destroy...Both those guitars would be worth lots of $$ today...Love dem girls shaking it up as the scream..lol
O Rock'n'Roll na sua essência...🤘
Marc rocking it up
Crazy and great version at the same time 👍🏼❤️
Meine ersten Singles waren alle von T-Rex....ich erinnere mich daran, als wäre es gestern gewesen und keine 53 Jahre her...Gott,habe ich die geliebt und rauf und runter gehört..❤️🤘🏻🔥🔥
This is an absolute banger !
Brilliant
Good Luck, following these guys up. 😂
I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more tambourine!
😂😂😂😂
I believe it was Marc Bolan that created the great driving guitar riff for the track "Nut Bush" for Ike and Tina Turner. It became a hit after his involvement and I have heard that track played live by Ike and Tina's band before Marcs involvement and it was a nothing song. He certainly was talented!
Mark Bolan looks absolutely gorgeous.
Great performance too, but I would have preferred Flo and Eddie over this Yoko style moment.
😂
@@michelineoliveira1812 Oh tsk, tsk, .... they were supposed to be over the top crazy. That is true to the spirit of the early 70s and glam rock.
Bull the back up vocals are ace they got soul.the echo his vibrato ad lib its no fake .can u do that its live 😂
So amazing. Any other songs from T Rex is greatly appreciated as there is so little live performances from these days.
So that’s what cocaine looks like.
That’s what it look like in the 70’s
I’m late to this party but this performance is amazing. This is what rock n’ roll is all about!
Omgosh! They're allowing some dancing for this one....but the background singers are too loud!😵💫
That was my first thought about the backup singers
@@carylosborn1808 Well, that and the fact they're screaming their parts. Ugh.
Downright harpie-ish.
Coked to the max.
The back up singers so early 70s I guess you had to experience it
Wow!
The legendary Jim Croce died just 3 days before this was broadcast.
Wow... I didn't know that.
HEY sound guy. Turn down the back up singers mic!
Right see everyone is blaming them but really someone should have turned those mics down a long time ago lol
@@user-sf1kw3wq1z
It’s always easier to just blame women for a lot of people.
@@keefriff99 Let's not assume the sound engineer's gender.
I may be in the minority but I kinda like seeing those gals going off like that.
Are you kidding me? I could have listened to just those gals w/o the band. They put everything into it, and let's face facts. They were phenomenally talented and really added to the show.
I mean, I would not have been able to sit still....
Marc taught that SG a real lesson
Grande mark ❤
Was there any cocaine left in LA by the time they took the stage, especially the backup screamers.
Wow, what a performance! I love Marc Bolan and it would have been incredible to be in the audience for this.
The drum kit is to die for.
70’s, man. I had a Gibson SG that I wanted to throw on the floor all the time 😂
Back then it was just another SG. Today we could retire on what that thing would bring at a Sotheby’s auction, even with the headstock broken off…😊
@@russhowison4215 true, but it still was a POS to play!😂😂😂😂
Fucking AWESOME!
T. REXTASY!!✌
Alright....& I finally get 2 c the back up singer that was driving t rex when they crashed...
What a tune A grade banger!!
I’m in love
Some aggressive tambourine playing...😂
The Pinnacle of Rock and Roll.:)
this is the correct answer
Another favorite tune from the day, sure I was on something or other.
Awesome Song! Memories!
ahahah none of the back singers had enough voice for it. :) Great song.
Marc Bolan would whip his Gibson SG onstage when he was a member of John's Children in 1967!
i love that
To all the music critics, complaining here;
Look at the audience!!
They’re so INTO IT!! 🤯 ✊ 🤩
Maybe they are coked out of their minds too👎
@@charleskollin1221 Who Really, Cares? 🤦♀️
Hard not to dance to this, I'd make a deadman get up and boogie!
The back-up singers were JACKED!!!!!! Those poor tamborines. Right On Man
MARC!!!!!! Need I say more.💖🌠🌟⭐✴🎸
They were on the good shit. Lol
VERY good shit.
Seen stuff of his before . Thats how his shows looked like
Friggin' awesome :)!
Stop. Drop. And Put On Your Midnight Special Tee🎉🎉🎉
WOWZA!!! WHO NEEDS RAP WHEN YOU GOT THAT.
L😅L
💔💔💔
Cool 😎 song!
I was really looking forward to this....but damn, screeching backup singer ruined it. A little too much coke i would guess 😄
When I see a T.Rex vid, immediately click
Rock até sempre!
Love them
Todo mundo doido de brilho!!!!! Brazil
Great version
That’s him ,,, the Lord Liege and King of the Rumbling Spires Marc Bolan
Rock on
Never could understand the lyrics, so I finally looked them up.
Second verse:
Well you're built like a car
You've got a hubcap diamond star halo
You're built like a car, oh yeah
Well you're an untamed youth
That's the truth with your cloak full of eagles
You're dirty sweet and you're my girl
Glad I didn't know them 50 years ago!
Marc was a gear head, lots of automobile references, see Jeepster
