People during both wars had more anxiety than we could ever imagine - Yet they had little help if any and where unable to talk about it. They were amazing people I feel proud of. Some of those people are living on the streets. Anyone living on the streets must have anxiety without any help or very little help. If you were to help someone living on the streets or someone who needs help you would put your anxiety on the back burner. I have heard some people say that the medication they were taking after a time made things worse and made them think negative all the time.

Anxiety and depression are best friends. I originally was put on antidepressants for anxiety. A massive panic attack. Only then I realised I was suffering from depression. All those things had slowly crept in. Exhaustion. Lack of motivation. wanting to sleep all the time. Isolating myself. That doom cloud sitting on my head. I love listening to you're talks on mental health guys. Thank you Claire x

I was diagnosed as a manic depressive many years ago and have been suffering for well over 35 years. My son, who will turn 30 this year, suffers from debilitating anxiety and I often wonder if my problems had somehow been the cause of his. I myself have never taken any medication because I always felt the need to feel my issues rather than suppress them, yes, it hasn't been the best of choices, but it helped to clarify the way I felt and how I as a person could deal with life. I became the master of disguise and no one knew of the conflict and battles that raged inside me, I was the perpetual swan with the calm grace of movement while below everything was a frantic race to stay afloat.
My luck came in the guise of my husband whom I have been married to for nearly 36 years. He has suffered through my illness whether he has truly understood or not, but he has never given up even though I'm sure there have been plenty of times he wanted to.

Just sorted out my will, do feel relieved, get it done! Nadia i know exactly how you feel watching Marks anxiety. My daughter is 29 and has had severe anxiety since age of 21. It has robbed her youth. It rips my heart out to see her sadness and like you if there was such a thing as a fairy godmother id be asking to giver her a break. Sending much love to you both ❤️

You two are simply the best. So honest and relatable.
I don't know if this will help you or not Mark but something that really helps me out is to remember this simple truth... #spoiler alert..Hippy comment coming up!
And that simple truth is who you really are is boundless, infinite and free. You are not those thoughts and feelings that threaten to overwhelm you. How can you be sure of this? Because if you were those things then you couldn't perceive them. So if you think of a knife. A knife can cut so many things in the kitchen can't it.it can slice tomatoes, carrots, potatoes etc but it can't cut itself! Took me a while to grasp this but you are a clever guy and I know you can make that leap.
So basically for me I take great comfort from knowing this. I am NOT my thoughts and feelings. What I am is further back than that. I am the vast, boundless awareness that kind of sits back and observes all the sometimes scary, sometimes daft, sometimes funny things we humans get up to BUT, I don't have to buy into any of it or try and push anything away or hang on to them as they are not "me"
I have a ball most days now I know that! Really hope this helps.. even a little. Thanks both of you for all you bring us subs! Xx

Hi Nadia and Mark, such an interesting and helpful post. My 19 yr old daughter suffers with an anxiety disorder, it breaks my heart to see her battle every day and she has those moments of fun too, where she appears anxiety free for a moment .. I cherish those! She wakes up much the same way as Mark does, doing a check on how her body is feeling .. it's such an awful thing and I feel so helpless but knowing we're not alone is a good feeling.. Thank you!

I can’t even explain how similar I am to you Nadia. I don’t have a clinical anxiety but I do get health anxiety, I worry about me and my family getting every illness possible. I have to avoid the news or try not to read articles online because I convince myself I have everything. Before having my daughter I only got anxious over health but now I feel like I get anxious about different subjects and the outside world like you said. I don’t usually get anxious when I wake up on a morning I more so get it before going to bed, I just lay there thinking of anything and everything. I can’t imagine how hard it is to have depression or live with someone with depression it must be agonising at times. I shortly experienced it as my partner lost his sister and had to go to therapy and be on medication. It was such a hard time even for me as the partner as you can’t do anything to make them feel better. We used to just have to go out in his car for hours and I just used to let him talk about anything that was going on in his brain. Mum guilt doesn’t help with all the anxiety as well. The part about even being anxious about the bedroom, I’m exactly the same I feel anxiousness about silly things to do around the house, or even today I was thinking I really need to get a spare key cut and I need to fill in my daughters two year health review and it really bothers me.

I can relate to this. My husband suffers with depression and anxiety which has been made worse following the death of our daughter. He was with her in hospital and I’m sure feels he should have been able to protect her. He too goes straight to what may go wrong in any situation. We work hard to try and get him to look for the positives and not worry about the things we cannot change or haven’t happened yet. Love Mental Marky. He has one good friend he opens up to. He also suffers with depression 😳Thank you for giving us such great content. ❤️

I hear what your saying guys - Nadia when u say mark doesn’t join u during your meditation sessions etc my husband often says the same of me.
But in my defence as someone who has suffered with anxiety all my life I find the reason I can’t do that and join my husband in his times of relaxation etc is because when my anxiety is so high my brain doesn’t stop whirling around to allow me quiet time or distraction time - I just have to live with it until it naturally troughs off.
I think that you are both truly lovely - nice to listen to and see u xx

Hiya, I suffer from mental health issues galore. 14 years ago I was in an abusive marriage. So, anxiety and all it's little friends pop up. Then, I had contact with a guy that sent me abusive texts, after 1 crappy “ date ". ( He was 2/3 hours late & spoke about himself ). So ain't no man in my life, still, lol. So, here's a little peek for all sufferers of mental health... Please trust me, a walk actually helps. I went a hour walk with 4 of my Doggies. It helped. Cheers 🍻 Adele 🇬🇧

Well done guys for being so open I think that we all have such busy lives now with work home and kids we forget about ourselves we all need to take time out without phones tv or internet even if it’s going for a walk for ten minutes laying in a bath to chill so much pressure is out there with work dealing with deadlines I think the work place has a lot to answer to and we all get caught up in this being a mother can be stressful and the world is different to when we were growing up and we want to protect our children and as you get older the issues seems as if they get bigger and you start to worry about the future mine was panic attacks I was over thinking things. All the time but as I got older I decided life is to short and make the most of what we have and enjoy life we r only here once make the most of every minute we don’t get another go at it

Totally get the whole being snapped at thing! My partner has anxiety and when it's really bad he snaps at the smallest things that he wouldn't usually snap at. Then he knows he was in the wrong and goes and beats himself up about it which doesn't help! It's hard for me because I know he's doing it because of the anxiety but I just want to scream 'don't take it out on me. I've done nothing wrong' but of course I can't!

Anxiety has ruled my life... the last 8 years has been the worst, 4 of them being agoraphobia because my anxiety was do high I couldn't function! It's hard to talk to people who don't suffer because its invisible so they tend to just dismiss it as almost nothing! .. I love your talks because it makes me feel I'm not so alone in my struggles.. I think most people can have some forms of anxiety and most people experience it , but it's when it becomes an illness and when it stops you from doing things you love and keeps you inside... I was having around 30 panic attacks daily .. it's hard to think that now .. but I just no 100 percent if it had lasted for many more months , years I would not of been around as it was so Incredibly overwhelming to deal with.... I do almost feel for certain that the more sensitive you are the more you will suffer because you feel everything so very deeply .... love your vlog today as it's so close to home .. xx hope everything is ok with your sad news xx

I would highly recommend complex ptsd- from surviving to thriving' by Pete Walker.... Such an eye opener, and very wise. Taught me a lot about what's behind some of my reactions and responses i.e fight, flight, freeze, fawn etc. Drivenness and being an adrenaline junkie is a classic flight response. Also learnt about why and when to recognize self-sabotage etc. Lots of information and insight and would definitely recommend it to anyone suffering from these issues.

Thank you for talking about this. I have bad social anxiety and hate going to parties or any social gathering. I also have bad anxiety about dying and mustn't think too hard about it as it sends me into a panic that one day there will be nothing and I will know nothing I've had this feeling for years and years since I was little and I can remember my lovely mum playing cards with me to take my mind off it. I am 59 and know I mustn't think too hard about this and need distraction.

Oh god I could write pages 😳my anxiety started when I was about five and was sick in assembly and it’s been with me all my life .ime experiencing terrible health anxiety at the moment which originally started when I had my son twenty three years ago as I was convinced I would get ill and die probably stemming from my own mum dying young from a brain haemorrhage.I seek reassurance about my health constantly so it has a huge impact on my family especially my husband who like you Mark is a recovering alcoholic of twenty five years .I have come to the conclusion you can’t change who you are and acceptance is the key for me in that I have good days and weeks then have blips in the road and say to myself this will pass , but like you I hate the feeling when I wake up in the morning with that horrible churning and dread , thank you for this vlog it makes me feel I’m not alone ❤️xxx

Nadia I was exactly like you once I had kids. But it got worse until it rapidly grew to Mark's stage there are no words to describe the intensity of it. I was put on more and more tablets to no avail. My husband looked after me I was safe with him but unfortunately he died in 2008 a year or 2 later my meopause started oh my God i thought it couldn't get any worse but it did. I am now 61 I don't go outside the door I never see anyone I just wait on death to call and it's not coming fast enough. Keep your job get out there and talk to your friends it's the best years of your life. Mindful never worked for me. I could never do meditation either. I wish you and Mark all the very best. Has Nadia ever looked into ADHD in women? It is fascinating and very different from the stereotype of the naughty boy running around the classroom. Very under diagnosed in girls and women. I’d be really interested to see you exploring it. I struggle with organisation, tidiness, time keeping and things like opening post despite trying very hard - things that other people dismiss as laziness or lack of care.

I find after all my years of anxiety which was far worse when I was younger. I’ve learnt that of all things, it’s brisk walks that work best. Making the time and in all weathers. And London is also a great place to walk. But I do have to be organised and do it. Ideally an hour at least. More if I can. If I miss a day I feel low. I like exercise including running. But walks are great and work better for me.

So Iv not been able to catch up on some of your vlogs because my brother inlaw has been really depressed and suicidal so Iv been around him to keep him from thinking bad thoughts, he said he’s very paranoid about everything and I feel so drained trying to make him feel positive! And then I got my dad depressed and my own brother! I suffer depression myself but am so good at giving advice and being there for everyone who needs me but I’m so shit when it comes to me being down and having anxiety! I feel absolutely drained taking on all these people’s depressions but don’t want to show I’m exhausted 😩 I just no when they feel better it will be me feeling like shit! Xxx

I find these so incredibly moving. Thank you for sharing. Nadia hit the nail on the head with her closing remarks around the need for self care & balance but we can avoid it. I'm the worst culprit of that myself, I know how to get better but I'm stuck in a cycle of bad behaviour. Mark's description of the impact of antidepressants is bob on. Symptoms are masked but you can still observe them happening. No suggestions but so much of what you say resonates with me. Keep talking (but don't join the TA Mark!!!) Love to you all

I so much appreciated watching this as I am concerned about someone I know. My question is, how do you help someone, who doesn’t want to be helped or thinks nothing will help them, but now turning to alcohol to numb their pain?

Think age has a lot to do with it!!! Things that you never used to worry about( even the tiniest things )that used to be so insignificant can turn you're whole day/week/month upside down! I find if Im at work Im not so bad but if I have days at home I feel isolated and thats when anxiety and worries set in!

Hi. So I’m 17 and I’ve been very anxious and worried recently and I’ve been really really down. I can relate to a lot of the things you talk about. As someone who is trying to peruse a career in media, it is great to know I’m not the only going through this!

  • @wonderwoman5528
    @wonderwoman5528 4 года назад +1

I found it really interesting what you were saying about having a highly stressful adrenaline fuelled occupation to match the high anxiety you felt as a child. I’ve always shied away from situations that make me feel uncomfortable and played it safe for my anxiety, but I realise I’m living too safely and I want to be more like you guys; keeping busy, pushing myself, achieving goals. I think that would really help with anxiety :) Nadia I wouldn’t worry too much about what your girls eat. As a teenager I ate junk food and at university I lived off cheese on toast, but when I got a bit older I took responsibility and turned into a health freak. Let them eat what they want and they’ll soon want to try the healthy stuff :) it’s hard not to feel sad when your loved ones are sad, but just them knowing that they have support and people who care around them will lighten the load. I know how Nadia feels when your loved one jumps to the worst case scenario before it happens and forgets to live in the moment (I’ve been that person and been the person who hates it in others, lol) but that’s something you can train your brain to change and with a gentle reminder from Nadia, you can feel the worst case scenario but say ‘that’s great news’ or something positive, to lighten the load. Our anxiety is made so much worse by voicing our negative emotions/feelings out loud, and almost become a self fulfilling prophecy that something will inevitably go wrong. Really enjoyed this HTSMSF x

Guys if you have a moment look up James french doing the trust technique around animals. To badly describe his method and really not do him justice he’s doing a form of mindfulness and the way the animals react around him while he’s in that headspace (a lot have serious issues) is incredible. Seeing how animals respond once we calm our headspace it really makes you reflect at what a big impact it must have on our own well being too xx

I am normally very calm, now I suffer from anxiety!!!! Seriously the saying slow down and smell the roses is so true. When the weather is good I go to the garden with a cup of coffee and relax in nature, sometimes a robin will come and land on the garden table, that for me is a special moment. If I didn't have to take time out I would have missed that. The thing about worrying about the next thing and achieving constantly its a bottomless pit, and the irony is of course if we do become ill we have no choice but to slow down. Regarding relationships, I think we can pick up and absorb other people's stress and anxiety, especially if we are on the sensitive side.

God I really love you guys. I think you express you're truths so honestly. You are both amazing.
Balance is key! You have to be a realist but know there is only so much we can do as humans.
Anxieties can be caused by more than internal feelings physically external influence can take play.
Electro magnetic frequencies effect brain waves yet everyone has abundance of tech in there homes. It's no coincidence that being out and about in a large expanse makes one feel level.
I feel we need to ride a wave.
I'm with you both in anxiety there is a hell of a lot going on in the world.
I think if everyone was honest we would all admit that it's a issue.
    I'm off to take a valium😉
I have gone to a field and had a screech a couple of times, but sometimes you just have to have a outlet! I think Mark should get a boxing bag!
Seriously I know, that comment alone makes me look bonkers but it is a really good way for letting out negitive energy!
This time in history is the best and worse time to be alive.
It's never been better for humanity on so many levels... yet, the rate of change of human evolution has moved on faster than our emotional selves are able to keep up!
Too much information is sometimes as bad as not enough!
I like to know as much as I can about the world and yet it is a struggle to be able to balance things that are happening but I tell myself, often in fact, I have no power or means to change this situation. The things that cause most anxiety are the things we fear.
    The anticipation of unknowns.
It's a curse to have to find out things and find truths but my fear is the unknown so when I do find truth ...Even if its bad, I deal with it and rationalise it if possible.
Of course... something else lands on me... and I proceed all over again.
It's not for everyone! Not even sure its for me...yet, it's something of a compulsion.
I'm thinking about off grid living. Has humanity made life more complex?
It's just life and yet all we fear is death.
"You only live each day ,dnt spend them thinking of the one day it will all end"
    Love each moments.😚

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head re the link between Marks anxiety & him being highly intelligent.
We can read self help books/take medication/use mindfulness/meditate as much as we like but difficult to change the dna of someones personality. Sometimes we just have to accept it’s just who we are & make peace with it x

I think as parents, we all worry about what we haven't done as well as we may have liked to with our children. I think that's completely normal though. As a woman, I do share my anxieties with my good friends, most of whom are women. They tend to point out the positives of what we've done well. My son is 13 now and I take great pleasure in noticing his kindness to others and listening to him share his own pov's. Knowing that he has an enquiring mind etc. I have always been honest with him about mental health issues and my mother has dementia, so I feel he is aware of other people's stress and anxiety, and he can gauge a situation and adapt his personality. This makes me so proud and takes the edge off of my anxieties about him. Keeping the lines of communication open is key I think. I love Nadia's idea of texting your kids to alleviate that pressure of face to face moments, and letting them come to us. Sorry for such a long reply! Thank you so much for this podcast, they are always great and really do help me with my own issues around depression, anxiety and the menopause. Much love to you all x

Mark do you think that being brought up around your mom and nan who both had anxiety has affected u and wouldn't it be best u and nardia not to show that anxiety to the girls so it doesn't follow suit in them or do you think that anxiety is in are genetic profiling from day one and do u think depression is aswell .Very interesting discussion today .

    • @SusanBryantInsomniacBookworm
      @SusanBryantInsomniacBookworm 4 года назад +1

In an ideal world, I'm sure that would be 'for the best'. However, they live together - and are clearly a very close, loving, family - and anxiety isn't like a packet of cigarettes you are able to hide within a household: anxiety affects everything, including our general behaviour. If a parent is snappy or impatient, or they are needing to be alone, a child knowing that their parent - whom they love dearly - is not behaving that way due to anything the child may have done, it absolutely essential. And sometimes it is impossible to hide behaviours that are associated with anxiety.
As for whether or not anxiety and depression are genetic- the majority of research has found that these mental health illnesses do have a significant genetic component, but can also be impacted by environmental factors.
I'm sorry that this response from a stranger is so long when you were initially asking Mark the question!

We all have are views on this subject and if thay dint want people to comment on this vlog then dont put it up or turn comments for it simple as . I asked that question for a reason as one of my parents had server anxiety to the point were in them days the doctor came out and gave them a sedative. Now I dont have anxiety problems but two of my siblings do and depression .So I just asked the question as I dont have problems like this but I see wot my siblings go threw on a daily basic . So is this genetic or just my two siblings were more sensitive to this when thay were young and saw wot happend to my parent . And if I dont word things right sometimes it's down to iam in recovery from a stroke and my thoughts and wording get mixed up .

    • @lollygeorge2199
      @lollygeorge2199 4 года назад

I deal with two of my family members that live with this daily and it is so difficult to watch them go threw this. Thay have both said on many occasions to counclers that thay feel like thay were born with anxiety. Me personally think that it was the child hood we went threw that gave them herendous anxiety. And even thay will say that thay can see bits of there anxiety coming out in there children. And I think mark and nardia are brave to touch on this subject because not a lot of people will understand how some people get when thay have anxiety I do because I live it every day with my siblings and it's hard work to help them when yourself don't suffer from it .

@@lollygeorge2199 I'm so sorry you had such issues in your childhood; and that you are seeing your brother and sister suffering now. Referring to your comment about your difficulties following your stroke - you are communicating brilliantly.
I am a psychologist, as well as having my own mental health issues, so have done a lot of research about the nature/nurture factor in mental illnesses, and a lot of research shows that the predilection to mental illness had a large genetic component, but trauma can be a trigger for mental illness even in those with no family history of it. Trauma in childhood can have ongoing implications for life, so you are absolutely right about environmental factors also playing a significant role in the development of illnesses like anxiety. I think - like most things - mental health difficulties arise from a combination of factors, such as genetics, environmental factors, and our own make up: a combination of nature and nurture.

I find mindfulness really hard, especially if I am anxious or feeling low, I have to force it, but often as not, my mind is going ten to dozen with thoughts, fears, things to do etc etc ., its near on impossible. I like to ground myself, by a simple technique I picked up, by looking around me where ever I am & looking for 10 things of one colour, say white, it proves to be a quick distraction & brings one back to the moment. xx
