The VW LMDh Common Platform: Explained

- In 2023, two new manufacturers from the Volkswagen Group will be joining the LMDh category to compete in IMSA and the WEC: Audi and Porsche. They could potentially be joined by fellow sister brands, Lamborghini and Bentley, in 2024. You may be surprised to learn that all cars competing under the Volkswagen Group will use the same chassis and the same engine. Today, I'm discussing why that move could be pivotal in boosting the entry list for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Daytona 24, and more.

For anybody watching this video now, it's likely outdated. Audi has announced a "pause" on their LMDh program which is looking like a permanent cancellation by most sources. Lamborghini has also announced an LMDh program for 2024, but it will be using the Ligier chassis as a base.
And Porsche is using their 918 motor XD
pain
I feel like this was a tactical play by VW, I wouldve loved all the cars to run different engines, but they're saving money this way. I thought they did it for BoP reasons initially, but definitely money. Fixing issues easier was not something I had considered
Fewer with more diversity.
If VW can give us a common Audi/Porsche platform, give us a Dacia LMDh alongside the Alpine 😤
I know you’re joking but a Dacia LMDh would be mint asf
Nissan and Lada LMDh too
James May be like: Good news!
As a Dacia Logan owner... this woul be awesome. Remembering the huge impact the Dacia Logan had at the Nürburgring N24 Hours last year....
That's silly statement, from someone who know nothing about racing.
Ideally, I would lean in the direction of diversity, but if uniformity keeps us racing, have at it. I cheered when the Bentleys won.
This is what I was afraid of when the whole LMDh vs LMH thing was announced. Instead of great variety of factory's entries we've got just skins of the same 4 cars. In case of VW group it's just 1 car with different skins. I don't care about costs, this is a god damn top tier prototype class. Look at the Super GT, they somehow keep running various cars in 2 categories at lower costs. And those cars faster than their European/US counterparts (GT500 is faster than LMH and GT300 is faster than GTE/GT3).
I'm glad that some manufactures has chosen LMH class to run, at least there will be different designs, not different skins.
I mean sure, but BMW, Cadillac, Alpine, Ferrari, Glickenhaus, ByKolles, Peugeot, Acura, are all going to be different. from the VW platform. because they are not going to work with multimatic and Dallara who is working with BMW and Cadillac has expressed that they are in no way working together on the aero and bodywork.
@@Noormis nice. The greatest car manufactures like BMW and GM /Renault and Honda are not capable of bulding their own chassis. They are just making a deal not to peek at each others bodywork at the same third-party factory instead. The factory competition we all deserve.
I agree, they're basically the same. Even the Hypercars that are bespoke prototypes like the Toyotas will be "balanced" so everyone has the same performance. Hypercars will be slowed down to compete with LMDhs, which are essentially LMP2 based. And the LMP2 have to be slowed down in order to not embarrass the "top class".
@@Noormis How many times does sportscar racing have to die before people realize it's too expensive? I don't like the shared chassis concept any more than you, but it's sustainable and nothing else before has been that.
GT300 is faster on paper. There Are several SRO spec GT3 cars competing in GT300 class in Japan. With some minor adjustments a GT3 can be just as fast as GT300
I love diversity
But I love more cars on the field and a especially close racing so I think VW is doing the right thing to improve those two
The only part I disagree with is the same engine layouts, they will probably all sound similar
Atleast the cars will look diferent, thats the most importent part for me
I vote versatility. That's right the good old run what you brung.. it's about the ingenuity and Technology of the machines as much if not more then, or just the talent of the drivers. That's where NASCAR got it all wrong. Worldwide Automotive competition platform it's where it's at. Don't let the spirit and the basis of the sport die !!!
Fast forward to today and the Audi lmdh project is up in the air and Lamborghini has chosen Ligier as their chassis supplier. Things can change quick
The WEC needs the Lmdh class because no new car makers are entering the championship the LMDh is a good idea to bring in car makers to the WEC with out the need of outrageous spending developing a new chassis it reduces costs and this means more competition and more teams
IMHO , those early 2000's Cadillac LMP cars were some of the most ferociously beautiful race cars that ever competed in the Leman series. And there were many during that era. BMW's V12 LMR, and the Ferrari 333 SP coming in close seconds. Even the Panoz Roadster LMP900 had a vulgar, in your face
je ne sais quoi beauty, and the sound of that Nascar motor under the hood was pure American thunder. But that Cadillac dotted all the i's and crossed ALL the t's..
Nice video. This common platform idea is fantastic, they already do it in the groups road cars. Keep up the good work.
imagine Audi with a v10 lambo with a v12 and Porsche with a na flat six!
Is there a good video somewhere describing the hybrid powertrain
My friend Triple Crown Racing talked about it a bit more in his latest video: ruclips.net/video/mZSOcrJ56Wg/видео.html
I too would love more autonomy and independence across manufacturers in the LMDH class as it is in LMH, but for me the welcome trade off is that more manufacturers will likely join the LMDH class and therefore increase competition. Its kind of depressing seeing the DPi class only running Cadillac and Acuras, indy car only having chevys and hondas, and F1 ferrari, mercedes, and Renault/alpine. So for me, if cost cutting and near-spec chassis mean more manufactures coming on then I'm for it. and its not like LMDH is going to be full spec like indycar, theres still a lot of flexibility in aerodynamics and development and I'm sure different brands in the VW lineup will be using their own R/D to beat out their in house rivals. But yea my wishlist would have been for LMDH to be a lot like LMH in terms of manufacture flexibility and autonomy.
Good to see you back :)
Well, as you said it´s what VW has been doing with there road cars for years. Now I wanna see a Skoda LMDh.
Look at all LMPs’, and they use the same chassis (Norma, Oreca, Legier…) and engines (Gibson at the moment). So nothing new other than this is a single manufacturer and that it is typical VW.
it works in the IMSA series but the WEC Hypercar catagory without spending limits will almost certainly pull in Ferrari & Toyota to produce
a Prototype that will obliterate the competition so I get the feeling that in Europe the LMdh category will only last for 2 years
I do not like the idea of a common chassis and/or engine at all. I only could tolerance it in the point of saving the premier class prototype car racing. But if you wave the green flag, Porsche and Toyota, maybe Mercedes to count, with their financial and technology impact would go pedal to the metal and the competition wouldn't enter because they know that they lost at the very first blanc sheet of paper already. Sorry to say but it's the truth. So, better a "prototype-cup-car-championship" than no championship at all for me. Just imagine that the LMPH car projects from Porsche and Toyota took much more money than leading F1 projects at that time. The last time a series was more expensive than F1, it let to its total crash (DTM/ITC).
These LMH/LMDH cars look very futuristic even tho Toyota’s hyper car looks like it’s predecessor the TS050
I just want a category with the t50s , valkyrie amr , Bugatti bolide etc ...
People tells that like diversity and then they cry because the races are boring for a domination of a mark... please do peace with your brain.
For me all the field should have same material... so ok for this platform.
I smell VW domination in the coming year’s💪🏽🤙🏽
wait, wasnt Dallara going to provide the chassis'? What the hell is going on?
I really hope they will decide against the shared engine idea, though they probably won't
As long as we get more cars out of it, I'm happy.
Aged like milk
is this why Audi pulled the plug on their program ?
F1
Mercedes 😭
im worried that theirs too many cars as if all the manufactures enter le mans we could see 40/50 cars in the top class by 2026 and then add the LMP2 numbers and the GT3 numbers and hoping the ACO can get BOP correct for once and so we could see teams sharing garages and maybe the pitlane being on the mulsane or the other side of start finish straight or where the karting track is
Wish more OEMs went the hypercar route but I understand why they haven't
$$$$! Runs this sport. Compromise is a also a part of the sport. This I think is the best compromise
Ah, 2023. One way or the other, the next big endurance thing is always another year away.
I'd like to see Audi with NA V10 or some diesel V8
I was hoping for GT1.
Didn't Bentley say they're canning all ICEU motorsports operations.. If so I doubt they along with VW will make an appearance along side Audi, Lambo and Porsche.
They’ve been rumored on and off over the past six months. Lamborghini is far more likely to actually happen, but I have still seen Bentley’s name tossed around rather recently.
Cadillac is going all electric by 2025, yet they’re confirmed an LMDh
@@GTRain yep now lambo has confirmed that they'll participate in lmdh in 2024
Look how beautiful the cars from 20 years ago looked. Now, look how hideously ugly the modern prototypes look with those fins.
GET RID OF THE FINS!
