The Point of Rocks Tunnel was first constructed between 1866 and 1868 through the Catoctin Mountain. The tunnel was enlarged between 1902 and 1903. It's been around for quite a while, but that's okay. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Great video , especially with the MARC train making an appearance. I first saw this tunnel on our way to Leesburg, VA. I was impressed by the brick work.
Talk about close fits and intermodal stacktrains....check out the NS Heartland Corridor through VA and WV where NS notched several existing tunnels to clear the stacks and the pedestrian bridge in Roanoke, VA near the VA Transportation Museum, those are close fits for stacks. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Nick Hill..........nice city and the railroad action there is great to watch. I was surprised about the minimal clearance on that pedestrian bridge, it’s a wonderful place to sit and watch trains, you can almost touch the containers moving beneath the bridge😀
@@richarddrum9970 Yes Roanoke has a lot to offer for a small town- city. The transportation museum, mill mountain. Did you know that Norfolk- Southern is closing in Roanoke?
Nick Hill....Our daughter and her family lived in Roanoke several years and we visited her often to see our newest grandson. I spent several hours at the Transportation museum with the grandson watching trains. I didn’t know NS was closing that shop up, sad. We are just 5 miles from the Pritchard, WV NS Heartland Corridor Intermodal Yard, sadly being sold now to a new operator. Fun to watch them loading and unloading containers there. Be safe Nick.
BaltimoreAndOhioRR, Clip - 1:02: In this video, you see all intermodal stack trains are all stacked together with a TTX railcar under the end of the CSX locomotive. Good work with that video and your phone camera has been recorded! Thankyou ❤💛💚💙💜
Excellent video. I love the contents in your videos. I must say you have an interesting Channel and a delight to all your subscribers. We love your channel and all your videos
Awesome meet and catch of the CSX double stack train and that was a tight squeeze but got it through with no problem! 5 stars Dave and have a safe day!
For the uninitiated: That "outside path" is what locals (and the National Park Service) would call the *C&O Canal.* (motto: _"mo mule is mo better."_ ) The canal's opening predated the B&O's charter by 3 years, and the 2 outfits wrangled for right-of-way here, around the South end of Catoctin Mountain. The canal remained in operation for another 22~ years after this tunnel was completed. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesapeake_and_Ohio_Canal
1:02 Whoa, Nelly! I remember one time I parked under that bridge. The car windows got all foggy for some reason. We never did go hiking.... Never mind....
They actually routed the eastbound track around the outside of the tunnel decades ago for clearance issues, in the 1960s IIRC. The tunnel was bored in 1867, most likely to ease the curve around the mountain (the 1902 date is when it was rebuilt).
Amazing, did those trains criss-cross itself ways. U have to see rail ways in the connection BAR-BEOGRAD 106 tunnels 90 bridges ( Montenegro) and (Bih) Čapljina-Sarajrvo 99Tunels 65 bridges(100-200miles). And amazing is also nobody does not know who and how they had been built. Maybe army???
Joseph Richardson they use devices called inter box connectors (ibc's). they are designed just like the twists lock on a intermodal chassis. when the rail car is empty there is a ben they store them in which in part of the double stack or bottom well rail car.
What a superb video. 1902, that tunnel was built or is that opening day date, either way, tight fit and all, history of that tunnel with train go through with barely enough room and then came the MARC train made it all worthwhile to watch! :o)
Larry, These "Well Cars" are designed with the bottom of the car to be as low as possible, Just a little above the tracks, so the double stack is not over height. Even with that, some bridges in our area (N.IL.) have been torn out and rebuilt higher to allow double stacks to pass under them. I saw another video where the round top of the tunnel was chiseled out along the top to allow double stack trains to pass through. Stay Safe.
The B & O RR knows how to do it right. If these trailers were puled by a truck, they'd have their tops ripped off when the trucker would go under the 11' 8" bridge in Durham SC.
Fantastic video. That tunnel was build with forward thinking to allow for enough clearance for double stack train wagons.
Good afternoon, Dave...that was a close call...thank you for the MARC train...it took the safe track, and avoided any height problems...thumbs up!
Mike W. and Brad it took the eastbound track which is the way it was going. Not the “ safe track”

Very cool!
Nice bridge view of stacker! Thumbs up!
Great, Thank You, I haven't been to Point of Rocks in several years. Use to park my MGB and watch the rail traffic and river there.
Very cool!
Awesome capture

I know exactly what your talking.
We're in Lexington and visit Roanoke when we can.

How about that one bit of graffiti that looks like snoopy
Awesome video Dave keep it up I really like the Point of Rocks tunnel
Thanks 👍 Yeah, me too!
That's what you call close clearance. Nice video shot.

Beautiful footage
Thanks for visiting
Excellent video, thank you dear friend
Wish you happy evening 🌞
Seems odd they have a tunnel when there is an outside path right next to it?

Nice catch.
Great video. I can never get over how long the freight trains are in the US! It's like, not measured by the amount of cars but by kilometers.. 😂😂😂👍👍
Very true!
This was really beautiful Dave!!! I loved it!! Awesome catch!!!! 😄😄
great video! that double stacked train was cutting it a bit close but they made it without anything getting knocked off the top.
My hometown of Roseville had the largest switching yard in the West. I loved trains then and still love trains.
That's cool!
Nice catches
Early in the clip, that right hand track (facing train) looks wirey...dented up. Looks like that track is a, "wobble maker," lol
Good catch!
Thanks!
Nice video! 橋もトンネルも高さがギリギリ😊
Greetings from Tokyo Japan :-)
Great catch!
Very nice video.
Thank You and Thumbs Up.
Many Greetings

Thanks for visiting 🎀
Awesome Capture Man
Cool location for trainspotting (to observe trains).
Many thanks!
And children, the train disappeared into the mountain and was never seen again. The End.
You've heard of the "Highway to Hell?"
This is how people got there before they put the highway in.
Please tell us the story again grandpa like your dad did you please.
Excellent
Really nice video!!
Glad you liked it! 👌
Nice video.
Excellent video Dave.

Lmao
Nice video, we enjoyed watching!! We have subscribed!
Very cool video nice catches
Cool video. I like it. Thumbs up. :))
Seeing the MARC passenger train going the opposite way was an added bonus.
😮how those containers can fit through the tunnel
Really nice !!!!
Very nice Train and view👌#36👍👍👍🌿✨🌞🌠
the tunnel was never designed for double stack containers in 1902, looks like it originally had two tracks.
Yeah, but its great how 118 years later its still being used. 👍
They actually routed the eastbound track around the outside of the tunnel decades ago for clearance issues, in the 1960s IIRC. The tunnel was bored in 1867, most likely to ease the curve around the mountain (the 1902 date is when it was rebuilt).
Just think, the men who built it are no longer with us.
Trains coming out and in of tunnels is cool!
yep!
It does look close.
Cool video liked!
Thanks my friend greetings!
cool. awesome catches. awesome video.

Nice location, nice catch.
Cool that was well done keep it up
That was perfect timing for sure.
At 0:50 is scary
Big like ,I enjoyed watching
how do they keep the top containers from falling off as the train moves, especially around curves?
they are locked to each other, then to the car.
ps, it does seem like they would be top-heavy, though, i agree!
oh ok. thanks. I know on trucks they are locked to the chassis i wasn't sure about trains
Joseph Richardson they use devices called inter box connectors (ibc's). they are designed just like the twists lock on a intermodal chassis. when the rail car is empty there is a ben they store them in which in part of the double stack or bottom well rail car.

Cool catch again! Have you ever seen Emma maersk
dont think so
Awesome Video
HI
video molto fantastico molto ben fatto complimenti un saluto caro favoloso imbocco in galleria tunnel grazie giuseppe
That's a tight squeeze!
How much space is there? Like 10 cm? XD
Yeah i'd say a tight fit for a doublestack passin thru Point Of Rocks tunnel!
@@daniellaubach7544
What is the tunnel height?
4.5m ?
Nice Catch!
I'D Say Some of These older tunnels probably won't take Double Stacked Trains!!!!♥️😁😎

when you can't raise the tunnel, you lower the floor. a common approach to handling double stacks.
Great video my friend.
Hello, how many wagons does this train have? 👍 São Paulo Brazil. 🇧🇷
👉🇧🇷 Olá, quantos vagões tem esse trem ?
135 but, I not sure ;)
what time? Which morning Marc was that
dont remember
R3V Studios he was maybe p880 because of the 2 engines
Looks like that tunnel was made for double stacks Would of thought in 1902 that double stacks would be coming through there Nice Video

Salman Khan v.
Further west CSX notched out their tunnels, six or seven of them to Cumberland.
I think it was originally built as a double-track tunnel. Today there is only one track in the middle, so the clearance is sufficient.
The B & O RR knows how to do it right. If these trailers were puled by a truck, they'd have their tops ripped off when the trucker would go under the 11' 8" bridge in Durham SC.
That bridge is 12' 4" now and is still shaving the occasional truck top. :)
