  • "Housing is the top target of environmental lawsuits in California. Want to build housing, even put a prefabricated trailer home on your lot? $20,000 for traffic, $20,000 for sewer, $20,000 for electricity, $10,000 for transit, $5,000 for public art, just in fees. San Francisco got up to almost $300,000 per apartment before land, construction, and labor. And many jurisdictions are charging over $100,000".

      this is similar in other states, our governments wanted higher housing price. This is by design, not a housing crisis. housing crisis mean our home value go down, then the governments will do something to pump up the price again

      A woman died for my right to vote and since ERA wasn't ratified I'll vote every chance I get. That being said I have to agree somewhat with @warlordshogun. I mean why have we not done anything to get rid of electoral college before this presidential cycle?
      Our sheriffs sport gang tatts, we have a new top cop in LA, hopefully he can clean things up. Sure we have better fast food workers minimum wage, meanwhile in medicine we remain deeply underpaid while patients are not getting what they pay for from medical insurance. Thanks insurance bureaucrats for robbing us blind. Shall we talk about home insurance?

    I live in Tokyo, Japan, one of the largest and most densely populated cities on earth. Yet, housing in Tokyo is affordable, and the entire country of Japan (123 million people) has half as many homeless as the city of Sacramento (half a million). Why is housing affordable in Tokyo? First, there is minimal housing and construction regulation. There is virtually no zoning, meaning you can build a home, shop, school, or factory pretty much anywhere, or even combine all of these into a single structure. Second, neighboring landlords have practically no say in what you build on your own property, regardless of the effect your new structure may have on the value of their property. Newer buildings, as a rule, drive down the value of older buildings, which may not seem fair to their owners, but the effect is to keep the overall real estate and rental prices lower.
    Another point is the way the government in Japan works. Japan's election system is interesting, it is illegal to donate money to political campaigns, to politicians, or political parties. Anyone can run for office in Japan, you petition the people in your district, and if you get enough signatures, your name is put on the ballot, and the government funds your campaign. All candidates get the identical amount of financial aid and speaking time. This system prevents candidates from making deals or promises in exchange for campaign contributions.
    An even more interesting point is that unions have no power in private business or government. Politicians cannot buy the votes of union members with taxpayer money. An added benefit to this system is that labor unions do not constantly lobby for ever higher wages while demanding ever lower standards.
    I live in the most expensive district in Tokyo, some of the homes in this neighborhood cost upwards of $50 million. Yet, there are small apartments in older buildings which can be rented for less than $1000 per month. Basically, Japan's housing is based upon the free market, more desirable places are more expensive, less desirable places are less expensive. Those who can afford better places can find them, those who can afford less expensive places can find them.

      @@Gargamel19 I mean obviously it needs electricity but it's much less than trying to make all the air in your house cozy. I personally don't have ax or heating in my house and my legs don't heat up so a heated blanket is the best way to fall asleep since cold legs don't let me sleep

      @@youbetyourwrasse there actually is a portable battery blanket but it's expensive. I mean when you get moving you get hot and take layers off. when you just sit or lay there you get real cold. So house work isn't a problem once you start moving

    I left in early 2022, and it seems that things have only gotten harder for people since I left. More homeless and mental health than while I was there through COVID. It’s a shame because that was my home. Born and raised for over 40 years. I have watched it grow and loved it for so many reasons. It’s been a heavy hearted decision each day to continue making a new home somewhere else.

    As a multigenerational Californian who worked and sacrificed to establish myself as a home owner - I never wanted to leave but my husband’s company was driven out just like all the others after I had a baby. Came from a union family. It’s definitely immoral.

      The State Government takes in all of the fees and taxes to pay it's administration class to manage all of the hand outs but most of the money pays all of these people that manage public programs and very little of it goes to the people who need the help. It's the biggest scam in the world. Take money from everyone everywhere they can get it and pay off their friends to manage public works programs in the name of helping the poor. Similar to non-profit charities keeping 90% of the money collected for "administration services".

      In California we had a small cafe built in 1935 that closed after it could not accommodate handicapped parking. The attorney who represents ONE alleged handicapped person flies a private jet all over California closing one old business at a time while enriching themselves.

    I am pricing out a house in silicon valley on 5 acres We applied for the permit 2 years ago and still don't have it It is santa clara county The house will cost about 800 a sq ft. which is about 1 million more than it would sell for. Ca is an evil state

    My cousin's family has lived in their home for about 20 years. He said that his prop taxes would double to $10K if he were to purchase an equivalent home in CA. So, he's not moving.

    Bought a CA house built in 2020, and the property tax is DOUBLE for the first 30 yrs .

      In 2024, new law implemented that after you sell or change name on deed, the property will be reassess. (Limited exceptions). Another way to steal money from new owners.

    Canada, Vancouver municipaliies, is not far off . Jist fees for one little duplex.is $80k. So if a small lot wants to build 6 duplex homes on what was a single home lot, it is 6 x $80k for the city coffers.

    The "tight" buildings Jennifer describes are allergy nightmares. "Sick building syndrome" is a thing and it starts with making a building "tight" so air from outside doesn't circulate. They are terrible for asthmatics and all children.

      Not so sure Dems. are the problem. I attribute the beginning of our decline to the Reps. starting with RR and his "trickel down economics" policies in the mid 80's and all the bad decisions made by the Bushes, Trump, etc. Honestly it's hard to differentiate between the two parties.

    Great explanation of the problem. However, I don't see the solution as long as those in power remain in power. Mailing ballots to every household in the state guarantees they will remain in power.

      Some foreigners with children, collecting welfare benefits for them have moved back to their homeland. California ballots are mailed to them in a foreign country. They vote democrat to continue receiving welfare benefits for their children and in some cases for themselves.

    All from a State who continues to remind one to watch A/C and Heating use, to keep from putting undue stress on the grid, and then offers one taxpayer funded subsidies to purchase an EV, thereby increasing the stress on the grid. You simply can’t make this stuff up.

    What she is talking about out with the “air tight” home is called “net zero.” All new homes in california are required to reach a specific range of leakage so they can recycle interior air to reduce costs. It is an added expense when building homes because you pretty much have to foam seal every crack in the house and rubber seal your basement, etc.

      Insulation and air tightness requirements aren't unique to California, they've changed and been updated in every state that I know of.
      They should take a look at the strict regulations that enforce zoning in California that limit the housing supply.
      It's simple supply and demand/supply side economics which I thought this channel promotes...but I looks like they don't apply that principle to one of humans most basic needs - shelter - most speakers on this channel want to restrict the housing supply.
      This video is misleading to say the least.

      This is a MASSIVE problem for health concerns. A tightly sealed home also prevents fumes from vacating the home or structure from building materials like carpet, composite wood products and your Corian countertops to your couch, mattress and recliner off-gassing after installation or placement in the building (releasing gasses from the synthetics used to manufacture the materials) this is one of the issues that create the phenomenon of MANY indoor air qualities being MUCH more toxic than outside air quality even sometimes in regions with moderate to poor outside air quality. Also, tightly sealed structures have resulted in a HUGE uptick in Mold and Mildew issues (most notably BLACK MOLD infestations) as well as a return of different bacterial illnesses like Legionairs Disease, as the guest noted in her interview.

      @@Matt90541 zoning laws do restrict development, however, she is correct that building in California is very expensive.

      @@sheepishmclemmingston5550 never considered that, it does take about 6 months for interior latex paints approved for use in California to cure, which releases VOC gasses in the meantime.

    It’s unfortunate that my family of 4 cannot afford our 1st home in CA. My husband & I are born & raised in southern CA & make a low 6fig. income combined & cannot afford to buy here 😢

    The CA State Senate has passed some extremely pro housing laws (please refer to @CaliforniaInsiders interview with Amy Kalish), but wielding these pro housing laws trigger prevailing (union) wage requirements. The increase in construction costs due to prevailing wage requirements is equal to or, more often, greater than impact fees.

    After living there over 42 years and trying to buy a home for 15 years, I gave up and finally made the great escape last year. And Thank God I did, now I have a house which cost lesser than my rental back in CA. Safer and calm area, no more worries of criminals, illegals, and homeless encampment. And it's not only for black and brown that suffers inequality there are a lot of us so called Asians too, who lives in poverty. Much as they say want to build affordable housing, it does not help when new landlords or property managers scam the old tenants in order to kick them out of the housing so they can rebuild and have it rent out higher price. I am also the victim of this situation, lived there over 25 years never late on my rent, took care of the place and yet had to go through where the old landlord never fixed anything and was unhabitable, so before I could take her to court, she sold it made millions. And the new lord lied and I got tricked into moving out. So how does this help good tenants who are struggling day by day to survive and find and stay safe. No way to do, so I finally moved out of the state. And the best decision I have ever made.

      California doesn't make it easy for landlords. They recently started to make you pull a permit to install a dishwasher in certain cities so the city government can make more money. They now want balcony inspections where if you have one balcony, a lot of contractors will charge you $6,000 for one balcony inspection. You have to hunt around to find decent prices. I've only found one contractor that charges a fair price for that. L.A. County was considering charging landlords up to $500 per unit per month on top of property taxes in RSO areas on top of property taxes. I think they backed down on charging them more. They have laws where tenants pets can destroy your rental unit so it makes it more and more expensive to landlords. They allowed bad tenants to pay nothing for around two years during covid so maybe some landlords passed some extra rent increases to those tenants who were honest and paid rent. The landlords had to pay property taxes and all other expenses regardless if the tenants paid rent or not. They make it legally more and more expensive to get rid of bad tenants so it is increasing the cost of being a landlord dramatically. If you have a property in a wild fire zone, I've known of people who are paying at least $5,000 more per year just to insure a property. I saw electricians double their fees in a two-year time frame. I've seen re-pipe companies charge about 40% more in a one year time frame. A lot of landlords want to leave California too. A lot of the rent control laws create a scarcity mindset in a landlords mind so I think that helps to increase rent. California stinks. A lot of rent control laws actually help the landlords that charge the most and hurt the landlords that charge the least.

      Landlords taxes go up every year. They neey to pay th3 taxes and insanely high fees. When they do your rent goes up and nothing gets fixed. Dont blame the landlords. Blame the government.

    Watching this video makes me feel grateful where we live which is in rural southern Indiana. We moved from the north of the state for our retirement 14 years ago and nothing much changed when it comes to affordability like housing, food, transportation, employment opportunities, and quality of life like low crime , community spirit, and health outcomes. Even my son who after graduating from business school and started working in Chicago’s business district decided to join us for better life work balance. He used to play ultimate but now he’s an avid disc golf player because we’re surrounded by golf and disc golf parks in the counties in the south. He thinks where we are is the best kept secret to live and let live. Watching CA disintegrate as described here especially with its quality of life due to untenably high cost of living is like watching a horror movie without any ending.

    Just because the climate allows for Windows to be open and close doesn't mean zoning allows it. For instance my house, they built a park across the street and allow it to go until 10:00 at night . The amount of noise whistles yelling people walking down our street screaming is so loud that there is basically from 4:30 a.m. when they bang the dumpsters and start with leaf blowers until 10:00 at night you cannot open Windows because of the noise

    So the government got caught double dipping in that lawsuit. The accused will just figure out another fee, another tax and cross fingers nobody gets the wiser like they did this time. This lady mentioned a home remodel example. At least the homeowner gets a contract with itemized costs for materials and labor. Why does the government just get to make up any number that sounds good in committees then just say it's because to anyone who asks why? No taxation without representation used to be a thing. We're all so used to hands in our pockets we don't even bother to notice it anymore. Except for in this case, that is.

    FEMA just moved the flood zone in my neighborhood that was built in the 1970’s and has never had a problem with flooding. Now they require me to get flood insurance. My property is 3’ higher than the rest of my neighborhood and will cost me $1800 to prove I’m not in the flood zone or $1600 a year for insurance

    Pacific Northwest gas tore out old drywall completely remodeled called A Greener building the only problem was that wasn't a 20 year old building whatever it cost to tear that building apart on 1st Street between Flanders and Gleason Street I had a similar experience I talked to a younger person who was attached to some construction project they were out the the corners I asked him why he said they were going to make them handicapped accessorized as he said that he looked over there and seen that they were about ready to tear out like 10 or 20 year old curbs that have been ready for wheelchairs but they decided they wanted to have some sort of little yellow raised area whatever which all of those things have failed apparently anyway Portland Bureau of Transportation doesn't seem too concerned about the streets like everyone that works there kind of wants to like set up Road diets two lanes both ways known let's put a big bicycle lane both ways take out a Lane of traffic going both ways

    It's much more affordable the further you get from the Bay Area or the LA Basin. You can even live near the coast in Humboldt County, but that's 200 miles north of San Francisco.

    This information supports the idea of not building in California incorporated cities. It also supports the idea of buying a California preexisting house so remodeling and upgrading to a larger more useful house can be built since junk development fees have already been paid.
