Shaving is the removal of hair, by using a razor or any other kind of bladed implement, to slice it down to the level of the skin. Shaving is most commonly practiced by men to remove their facial hair and by women to remove their leg and underarm hair. A man is called clean-shaven if he has had his beard entirely removed.
Both men and women sometimes shave their undercheek hair, chest hair, abdominal hair, leg hair, underarm hair, pubic hair or any other bodily hair. Head shaving is much more common among men. It is often associated with religious practice, the armed forces and some competitive sports such as swimming, running and extreme sports
Razor burn is an irritation of the skin caused by using a blunt blade or not using proper technique. It appears as a mild rash 2--4 minutes after shaving (once hair starts to grow through sealed skin) and usually disappears after a few hours to a few days, depending on severity. In severe cases, razor burn can also be accompanied by razor bumps, where the area around shaved hairs get raised red welts or infected pustules. A rash at the time of shaving is usually a sign of lack of lubrication. Razor burn is a common problem, especially among those who shave coarse hairs on areas with sensitive skin like the bikini line, pubic hair, underarms, chest, and beard. The condition can be caused by shaving too closely, shaving with a blunt blade, dry shaving, applying too much pressure when shaving, shaving too quickly or roughly, or shaving against the grain.
Ways to prevent razor burn include keeping the skin moist, using a shaving brush and lather, using a moisturizing shaving gel, shaving in the direction of the hair growth, resisting the urge to shave too closely, applying minimal pressure, avoiding scratching or irritation after shaving, avoiding irritating products on the shaved area (colognes, perfumes, etc.) and using an aftershave cream with aloe vera or other emollients. Also, it is good to prepare the skin for shaving by cleansing the area to be shaved with a wash containing salicylic acid, to facilitate the removal of oils and dead skin.[citation needed] Putting a warm, wet cloth on one's skin helps as well, by softening hairs. This can also be done by using pre-shave oil before the application of shaving cream. One other technique involves exfoliating the skin before and after shaving, using various exfoliating products, included but not limited to, mitts and luffa. This process removes dead skin cells, reducing the potential for ingrown hairs and allowing the razor to glide across the skin smoothly decreasing the risk of the razor snagging or grabbing causing razor burn.

This guy is wrong though. A 5 blade razor puts less pressure on your skin. Plus when I use a one blade razor I have to go over the skin more times anyway. Plus those tend to pull hair out. There's more to it than how many blades you use. Those cheap bic razors make my face feel like it's on fire.

I used to suffer really badly from razor rash on my legs when I used to use disposables, but once I bought a decent gillette razor the problem went away. It's interesting that you had the opposite reaction. Goes to show how brilliantly different we all are. Also great tip with using oil instead of shaving gel. Regular exfoliation is also really important, I have found. It prevents hairs from getting trapped under the first layer of your skin, your epidermis, when the hairs begin to grow back after shaving, thus not giving you folliculitis. A mechanical type of exfoliant/scrub (tiny beads suspended in shower-gel or lotion) has proven to be the best.

My skin is sensitive so I also can't shave everyday - I have to wait at least 4 days but my hair regrowth is really fine though. And I've heard that keeping your blades dry after shaving (as in, don't let them stay in the shower where they'll stay wet) helps your blades last longer.

Curly hair grows back through the follicle at an angle and pokes the skin irritating it. Also, super coarse hair also busts through the tiny follicle irritating it as it grows as well. Those two factors should be considered by those who suffer. I have battled these bumps and/or rashing a day or 2 after shaving as well. I stopped shaving against the grain on my neck or head. I stopped shaving my chest decades ago. Too much pain to look purdy ;-)

Great video, Wayne. Just one thing, though.. You didn't really distinguish razor burn from "bumps", or ingrown hairs. A product like Tend Skin or another BHA product is not designed to treat razor burn, the sensitivity/abrasion caused by shaving, but does help treat and prevent ingrown hairs (bumps). But you're absolutely right otherwise, esp about the soap-based shaving foams. They can completely dehydrate the skin, exacerbating any sensitivity or tendency towards ingrowns.

I hope you don't mind if I respond but I just solved this problem for myself after I had some trouble with that. I use a body scrub and exfoliated my skin before applying shaving cream. Then I use a new (or pretty new) razor and shave the direction of the hair first. Then (this applies more to the bikini area) hold the skin taut and shave in the opposite direction. The less strokes you need the less chance of irritation. Then apply Bikini Zone. It's AMAZING for irritation and redness.

I use bumpstoppers double strenght after each haircut but I also use when I shave my face. They have not gone away but the bumps have dramatically shrunk. Also just tell your barber or person that cuts your hair to be gentle in this area. I also used to cut my hair really really short. I would use a 0 or double zero. Now I use a three all over.

This may not work for everyone but it works perfectly for me.
    1. wash your face and neck with soupy water to remove any grease/oil & dirt from your skin.
    2. Grab a cloth and rinse it under a hot tap then wipe your face and neck this will open your pores.
    3. make sure before you apply shaving cream that your face is wet.
    4 . apply shaving cream.
    5. start shaving, only shave in the direction the hair is growing because going against it can cause irritation!
6 when you have finished shaving wash your face down with cold water this will close your pores and stop dirt from entering.
    7. dry your face and apply shaving balm (this isn't essential)
like i said this may not work for everyone but give it a go you never know :)
Oh and i don't think it really matters what razor you use i personally find the Gillette ones the best, i dont
think it makes a difference how many blades it has, after all people wouldn't spend ages creating a razor thats gonna fuck your face now are they? lol

it takes only one pass to get a good shave, then for second pass i strech my skin and get a very clean shave. it is slightly worse then shaving against the grain, but it is noticable only after a day.
also, the shaver of my choice is mach 5, i am able to do much longer cuts than with cheap disposable razors and much less cuts.
also, like grant wrote, 1. clean the face then warm it up to relax the hairs, apply shaving cream and chave, rinse , apply cream again and shave again rinse, dry and then shaving balm.
      works perfectly

It's very important to keep a new, clean blade/razor at all times. In the shower/sink(any wet surface) bacteria can live. When you shave, you take off small pieces of the top layers of skin, giving those germs an easier way to enter the folicles causing infection. Razor bumps or ingrown hairs also come from not exfoiliating, that's where the bha products come in and a good skin refinishing routine. =)

I use Nair and have been for years!!! Ugh, it's the best! I rub my own damn legs they're so smooth! Turns out my skin didn't like metal against "pedal" so it may not be your razor or cream. Hydrocortisone is the best salve to use after b/c it prevents inflammation/the bumps and absorbs in the skin. Neo just sits on top and irritates the area.

I used to have a lot of problem with razor burn and bumps. I found that for me, the speed at which i shaved mattered. I go very slowly now and only with the grain. When I did get irritation or bumps I used Neosporin on the bumps and it worked magic, and calamine lotion on the burn. It knocks it out quick. I also find that after I shave I need to protect my neck from my beard to prevent irritation over night.

Quit using foaming agents 15yrs ago. I also have always shaved against the grain with at most a triple bladed razor, using usually just a disposable. No bumps or burns or anything except the random nick from a blade I forgot I had used & didn't toss. Shower gel with shea butter or something else simple I don't need anything fancy. Also, my last step in a 10min shower if that makes a difference. Baby oil gel afterwards &done. .

Can’t wait to see how this works for me. I think I’m going to try a one blade. I’m part Italian my neck hair is course and EXTREMELY coily and it goes back into my skin resulting in an ingrown hair. I’ll start off going towards the grain. With a TON of raw coconut oil!! Just unsure on conditioner because my skin is sensitive and conditioners have fragrances and chemicals. Might be dicy. I’ve struggled with this for so many decades.

I have really sensitive skin, and I got rid of my razor burn. First, I stopped using shaving cream, and started using a facial cleanser by Noxzema. It really helped because of the menthol. Then, I started using shavers for sensitive skin by Bic. Then, I shaved downward on the parts of my face where there was hair except my jawline where I shaved sideways, and the sides of my neck, where I shaved upward. Then I shaved before I showered. All these changes together got rid of my razor burn.

I used to wax & that would really irritate my skin so after years of putting up with it i went back to a razor.I use 2 blade gillette venus zazor now & they give me no trouble at all also I use their dry/sensitive skin shaving gel with it...which surprised me because my skin on my face & body is very sensitive to pretty much everything i.e. new products, sun exposure & environment. Ive never ever had razor burn & I think a lot of it comes down to the AMOUNT of shaving you do,not the actual razor

  • @NeccoWecco

With ingrown hairs you have to pick them out, or else they get really painful. Usually just some tweezers can get it, otherwise it will just keep growing into your skin until it gets infected/forced out. I don't know how to prevent them, just take your time when shaving and be gentle to keep irritation at a minimum

I switched to a Muehle safety razor, a Muehle shaving brush - I will never go back to a multi-blace razor! It is cheap to change the blade, you can have a sharp blade without struggling with the high replacement price. You will automatically change them more often and your shave will be on point, no painfully pulling of the multi-blade setup, you get all the hair without pressure and in one go. One round with the grain, one against and you are done. Be smart and go back to the great stuff :D !

If you use something like Cremo or a shea butter soap with other butters added to it lets say, then use your brush and shaving soap or shave cream, it will take care of alot of that.
Applying the slick stuff first will give that protection barrier you need. Also use a moisturizing after shave balm, after u shave then later you can put on your regular after shave or cologne.
    works for me anyway

Probably nothing, but here's some tips. a) Make sure your hair is soft - so don't shave right when you get in the shower, shave at the very end b) Use lots of shaving cream (hair conditioner works too) c) Make sure your razor is sharp (and clean!) d) Shave against the grain on your legs BUT shave with the grain on your bikini line e) Make sure your skin is really wet.
I used to get really bad razor burn and I changed my routine to the above and I haven't had a problem since.

Which one is better: electric shavers or regular razors? I've always used electric shaver and my skin is very sensitive, so I'm very prone to bumps on my neck. My dermatologist gave me a prescription cream made of azulene, allantoin and hamamelis (witch-hazel) in order to prevent and heal my razor bumps, but it doesn't work. Please, should I change my shaver? Thank you :)

I don't really know why menthol is supposed to irritate your skin. It works really well with my skin, and my skin is very sensitive. Also, I never pull my skin when shaving, I shave each area of my face once, and I shave against the grain in one area and with the grain in another. I never do both in the same area, and my razor burn disappeared.
