Thankful to have seen him several times in NY in the seventies. Have most of his albums on cassette, LP, and CD. Fan of his since I fell in love with salsa and Latin jazz in 1973. My boss in the translation agency would play his albums while we were working.
That is why i was so glad to grow up with him and Mongo Santamaria.Tito Puente,Machito and Eddie Palmieri are among in the era of Salsa which wound up being The Latin Jazz of Old To The New:Being influenced by these megastars are an honor and they always gave back to the community.
One of the great drummers of all times.Whether it be salsa, jazz, rock Baretto could handle any music presented to him.However, he was indeed a jazz or latin jazz performer to the end.R.I.P brother Ray.

The saddest thing is that there aren't many videos of his liver performances. I got to see him several times when he was in his prime but I can't understand why much of it was not documented.

Con todo respeto le dire algo por supuesto que cuando se llega a cierta edad nada es igual pero aun si fuera joven este numero se toca igual aqui esta la equivocaccin de la gente que piensan que ser conguero es rapidez y alboroto estan muy equivocados, Giovanny es un maestro y considerado el mejor conguero tecnico del mundo pero jamas loo cambio por Ray porque es sentimiento ritmo adaptarse a cualquier musica y es de calle nadie le enseno a El sino la calle y su influencia cuando oia a Chano Pozo y su gran amigo Mongo Santamaria y Patato por lo tanto una cosa no tiene nada quever con la otra esto es un solo magistral dinamico con un mensaje, aprendan de percusion musical gracias
Quien pudo reemplazar a Barreto de Fania jamas los conciertos de Fania eran igual sin El con todo respeto a los grandes maestros que me encantan tambien como Eddie Montalvo y Johnny Rodriguez que en opinion no tiene el reconocimiento que se merece es tremendo musico y en magistral bongocero. Ray uno se los unicos 5 latinos en el NEA que es el salon de la fama del Jazz y una cosa interesante que hay me mencionar esto es Jazz no hay que poner raza eso de decir latin jazz eso no existe se llama correctamente jazz con latino ya que el jazz es americano no es latino para nada...
Que ignorante eres e irrespetuoso este Sr.. Toco con la crema del jazz y la salsa y con su orq alcanzó grandes exitos.

@@edyrodriguez3419 Sr.Aunque USTED lo niegue, pues si existe,por la Sencilla razón de que la MÚSICA es UNIVERSAL. Tanto es así que la percusión CUBANA, dicho por los mismos negros estadounidenses enriqueció algunos de sus temas.
Es más, ELLOS no tocan SU JAZZ, con la percusión CUBANA, muy bien que digamos. Caso contrario de los latinos, que tocan ese JAZZ, el de ellos bien, y el JAZZ LATINO lo llevan a un nivel muy alto.
Yo, particularmente lo veo y siento de esa manera.
Le recuerdo una cosa, TODOS somos AMERICANOS,y los creadores del JAZZ CLÁSICO, que es la expresión correcta, fueron NEGROS, no SAJONES !
