Turns out that galaxy has their own Q-level species that is very territorial - which means freely using their powers there would risk a "war of gods", likely to devastate both galaxies. So Starfleet would take on the task of traversing and exploring that galaxy, with a Q as guide and observer, mostly contained to a static body. They would not use their power unless the mission would otherwise fail, or to return the fleet home after fulfilling it. This would set up a Voyager-like series that has way more plot hooks built into the setting already. Having individual ships go on solo missions. Having the fleet prepared for a long-term mission allows the writers to address many of the gripes people had with Voyager's supposed plot holes as well. That would be a cool explanation, that the Galactic Barrier is like a coral reef, and is a massive ecosystem. It would account for why it would be unique to the Milky Way.
That little note at the end where the majority of entities that cross the barrier are psionic is really interesting, it hints at an origin of the phenomenon. But i don't know where that hint may lead
It says a lot about the absurd size and breadth of the universe that even in Sci Fi there is no faster than light speed that can make traversing the distances between galaxies reasonable.
And when there are exceptions to that rule its always stated it took centuries or millennia to make the trip. Though really, when you think about it, space folding is a potential idea for FTL equivalent methods of travel - if its ever cracked then moving between galaxies would be not any more difficult then moving across a solar system, you'd just need to be able to accurate predict your target destination or have some form of impossibly advanced sensors that ignored space-time and could get an instant image of far off targets without waiting for light to catch up. Might require a lot more power, though. But since its all theoretical... Who knows?
Stargate had 3: ancient civilizations that could hop btwn galaxies easily (Asgard of Ida), ancient power sources that can be plugged into earth ships for a months-long journey or into a Stargate for a one-way trip (ZPMs), a chain of teleportation devices across the galactic void (gate-bridge & midway station).
Heh. The original Space Operas, the Skylark and Lensman book series by E. E. Smith, had intergalactic and occasional inter-Universe travel. That was in the 1940s and 1950s.
star trek the traveler was able to make the enterprises warp engines go super fast that it travelled millions or billions of lightyears in a blink of an eye.
It's sad that the greatest Science Fiction series in the world has not been successfully translated to English. Travel to other galaxies, even other universes and a scope that surpasses many other Science Fiction universes while not normal normal, it happens frequently ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perry_Rhodan ). While I'm not saying another series should go that far, it would be nice if they did widen their horizons a little. Just for example, we know the hero ship is not really in danger. Something they did solve in Perry Rhodan with the hero ship being big enough to carry other completely self-sufficient ships with it. Say, like a ship the size of a D'deridex, carrying several Defiant-Class ships. In Perry Rhodan neither these ships, nor it's crews have the same plot armor as the hero ship or the main characters. And yes, they did mange to get the reader attached to a crew before letting them go down with the ship at least once. And that's just one example how a wider horizon could make a show more interesting.
How about the 4D Jehovah in STNG episode, Justice? “Leave my children alone” maybe the vengeful sprite wrecking this little patch of space in the galaxy.
I can’t help but notice the connection that most were non humanoid. That is obviously explained by the progenitors, but of course it also seems to imply that the humanoid form evolving outside of the Milky Way is a lot lot less common without interference.

I’m glad you talked about the Ornithoids. Someone with good background should do a thorough analysis on them. Most likely they came from one of the Magellanic Clouds. Distance not too great, studies the galactic barrier from a distance so worked out passage, etc. Your summary here seems more correct than some others I read.
You actually neglected to mention the USS Valiant, which was swept past the galactic barrier by an ion storm, before trying to limp back. It was that ship's jettisoned recorder that the Enterprise crew found.
That theory was never confirmed in Established Canon, but it seems likely. Anyway, it still resembled a bratwurst off my barbecue grill, (I usually burn everything I cook),...
I haven't seen disco season 4 due to it not being available here... So, I'm not that bothered as personally I enjoyed the series 1 and 2 but 3 was a tad confusing.

Can you make a video on the Sphare Builders from Enterprise the one with Captain Archer compair them to The Iconains . Which Species has the superior technology the advantages an disadvantages of both species . Who is better .
Perhaps the space amoeba lives inside the galactic barrier & is native to it - heck maybe it is even a bunch of them generating it's energy field in the 1st place ?
Thought question: would the Federation, if it had a drive system that could breach the galactic barrier only once, send a ship on a one way journey of exploration and why. Oh, the ship can still communicate, it just can't cross the barrier again.
I wonder if the 'Giant Amoeba' was actually created by the Galactic Barrier...? Maybe when the Valiant was destroyed, or even when the Enterprise went in.
The Kelvin don't need to emigrate to the Milky Way galaxy. They just need to wait for a couple of billion years until the Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies merge/collide.

I mean you could do a whole startrek show outside the Galaxy. Like Voyager, but good. Follow a more DS9 style for characters as well. Oh, and use adults, not people barely old enough to drive.
I'm personally guessing that the 10-C will be the Kelvans, because both are extragalactic beings whose homeworld is now uninhabitable, and because Discovery has brought back TOS characters before (like the Guarsian of Forever). The fact that the Kelvans were shapeshifters could explain their different appearences in TOS and Discovery
They would have to reinvent the Kelvans as when we last saw them, a mixture of human deceit and corporeality, undid them: stranded on some unknown planet, a la Khan.
An object launched in space will keep moving until another force acts on it. The Doomsday weapon could've easily been launched on an intercept course to a neighboring galaxy running minimal sensors in case of the unexpected. It wakes up and moves then return to half-asleep mode. When it comes within scanning distance of a galaxy, it'll power up to 100% and can then navigate through the barrier just fine and comes on in for munchies!!
So, uh, you forgot the machine species from Picard Season 1. I personally like the (Beta canon) idea that the Q continuum put the barrier there to keep something that Q accidentally let into the Star Trek universe - there's a trilogy where Q takes Picard off on some trippy nonsense mission and they go over it there. Which, I might add, has one of my favorite Q bits in it, wherein Q explains to his, er, wife?, why he's so amused by Picard finally - in his own words, "he's [Picard is] the 'straight man'." To which lady Q responds that that's absolutely "carbon based of you," and Q shamelessly admits that it is. He's such a great trickster god when written well lol.
I just call them Robo-Cthullu since that seemed to be their role, to be a vast cosmic horror, lurking in the darkness. Honestly, I think Data would have been horrified and ashamed of his children, that they were going to summon a Lovecraftian nightmare from the outer darkness, that would exterminate all organic life in the galaxy, just to protect themselves.
Quite a coincidence and kinda reassuring that you uploaded today since I had a nightmare that you nearly lost your channel to DMCA abuse and decided to abandon sci-fi stuff in favour of a career in chess
Still though, they mentioned that the mycelial network goes across and between universes, and yet in the show it was later stated that it only goes as far as the edge of the milky way. My guess is that the mycelial network does stretch across the universe, but the barrier also cuts through subspace, causing the mycelial network to be split between the galaxy and the wider universe. And the reason why I think discovery wont try to jump into the 10c hyperfield is because they simply don't know if it can work outside the galaxy.
They established earlier in the season that there are places the Mycelial Network doesn't reach, specifically the pocket subspace left behind by the DMA. I think its pretty safe to assume the Hyperfield has a similar property.

More research required, at least if you want to include books (see Vendetta) this book describes the "doomsday machines" origin and the bigger threat, It is a fantastic story that combines Guinan's people and the Borg, Basically the Doomsday device was a prototype designed to destroy the Borg but the story combines Captain Picard's life and connections, tying in many of the "cannon" story lines (Sorry Must try harder😉)
The Iconians fled to Andromeda, a galaxy that in canon was dying or at least being overrun with deadly radiation that the clarktech advanced Kelvans could not cope with? Granted, Star Trek usually gets time scales wrong and explains such errors away as "subspace shenanigans" and so if the Iconians fled to Andromeda hundreds of thousands of (Earth) years ago, they could have been there when the "scouring" of the galaxy was not so bad the Kelvans had not left yet. Again with that stupid galactic barrier. It serves no meaningful purpose, and almost does not even actually exist in the Star Trek Universe. Space travel being as hard as it is it makes no sense that the barrier that is supposed to keep out extra galactic threats can not stop a starship from pushing through the bramble and back in. Any exo-galactic species wanting in could literally just push in with moderate effort and it is not like they can not get the energy they need along the way, go to sleep, save that energy pulled form wandering star system or rogue planets, or hit up some minor galaxy nearby the Milky Way until its time and then get to work. The Barrier rightly makes no sense and serves no meaningful purpose. Hinting at alternate universes, or that there is actually life beyond the galaxy (when you still have not actually touched and mapped the far side of the galaxy you are in) seems like a set up with no pay off ever.
Its possible the Iconians are the ones doing the scouring in Andromeda. Also the Galactic Barrier might not be there to keep things out, just keep us in. If we're talking hyper advanced civilisations its possible the Milky Way is a massive galaxy wide experiment, and the Barrier is just there to stop us from realising what's out there looking inwards.
Given that it destroyed the Kelvans ship, I think it os is working quite well at hindering invaders. Or how do you think the 23rd century federation would have fared against a Kelvan ship? Also the barrier could be against something very specific, only hindering starships by accident.
The young Jean-Luc should have stuck to archaeology because he clearly doesn't know beans about astronomy. There's plenty of matter in intergalactic space that a Planet Killer could feed on. Whole star systems have been ejected out there. Besides, a spacecraft that's miles long with a hull made out of solid neutronium would have the mass of a small star, its momentum would be enough to punch through the Barrier like it wasn't even there.
The galactic barrier really bothers me. I can usually suspend my physics knowledge for a good bit of sci-fi but I just cant in this case. Its too silly.
The fact that Kelvans and other extragalactic entities like the ones in Cat's Paw only show up in TOS shows how poor and less imaginative TNG and the following series are when compared with TOS (not even counting the socio-political/philosophical commentary level of TOS). Even the Q are just more like comical devices than actual interesting plot elements.

I sort of wonder if the Giant Space amoeba came from the Galactic Barrier.
That would be a cool explanation, that the Galactic Barrier is like a coral reef, and is a massive ecosystem. It would account for why it would be unique to the Milky Way.
would be a likely candidate.
Yes another excellent video. Thank you.
The biggest INTRAgalactic threat in canon?
God.
I remember a book that covered the doomsday machines. Reunion by peter David. . ( tng novel)
Vendetta. They were a weapon deployed against the Borg.
It's not canon. It's like the video games.
@@Caesar316 well it appears the video games are canon ( the sto ships in Picard and uss titan is from a book ) i don't buy that canon non canon . Especially when they are happy to steal from it . The utopia fleetyard was also destroyed in a book ,( an attack but different details) same thing with star wats . F them we fans decide , even the word canon is a religious term , ( books of the bible edited out of the one we know) regardless it was a good book . And it covered the galactic barrier and doomsday machine and the borg , and a cool tholians vs borg battle. Star wars legends is canon for me .
@@shanenolan8252 it's not canon because it's not part of the prime timeline until it's included in one of the prime series. The video games are not real Star Trek they're just action games designed to appeal to non fans. The books are... mostly... poorly written and rather than being creative and going to new places simply rehash and capitalize on previous established things from the real franchise like the borg or the Doomsday machine.
@@shanenolan8252 also who cares if Cannon is a religious term - it's being used in many non-religious contexts for years.
I think it would be a more likely explanation that the giant space amoeba somehow slipped over from fluidic space maybe with an undean incursion accidental stow away in the transfer
I was going to mention the Caeliar/Borg, but apparenty they're from Erigol, they just happen to do a lot of their work across the entire known universe... somehow.
Ewww the expanded universe gave a definitive origin to the Borg? No bueno! Thank god that stuff is non-canoical.

It's been a long time since I've seen the episode but wasn't the crystalline entity not from the milky way galaxy ? Who knows about the Q as well but that's just speculation.
Well done!
1701 tos did it three times not just two… third was with the alien that was in the box and no one could look at it without going insane
Is There in Truth No Beauty?
oh yeah forgot about that one.
The Medusans. They were unimaginably fugly in appearance but apparently nice in actual temperament...🙄
just watch season 4 , so this came at just the right time.
I believe Spock speculated that the neural parasites from "Operation: Annihilate!" may have also originated from outside the Milky Way Galaxy.
🌎🌏🌍 One world, one galaxy, one universe. Beyond you'll find thoughts, that will astonish.
The Makers can't be completely wiped out by a supernova, just that branch of them. Because they established several worlds and several galaxies..
Would be interesting to see them in the future
I’m glad you talked about the Ornithoids. Someone with good background should do a thorough analysis on them. Most likely they came from one of the Magellanic Clouds. Distance not too great, studies the galactic barrier from a distance so worked out passage, etc. Your summary here seems more correct than some others I read.
You actually neglected to mention the USS Valiant, which was swept past the galactic barrier by an ion storm, before trying to limp back. It was that ship's jettisoned recorder that the Enterprise crew found.
Oops. It was a magnetic space storm.
Wasn't the whale probe stated to be extragalactic?
That theory was never confirmed in Established Canon, but it seems likely. Anyway, it still resembled a bratwurst off my barbecue grill, (I usually burn everything I cook),...
I haven't seen disco season 4 due to it not being available here...
So, I'm not that bothered as personally I enjoyed the series 1 and 2 but 3 was a tad confusing.
Season 4 uses the 32nd century setting a lot more effectively than season 3, at least in my opinion. I’d recommend it. Where are you, the UK? If so, while it’s no longer on Netflix, it is available on the free Pluto TV streaming service 🖖😊
Can you make a video on the Sphare Builders from Enterprise the one with Captain Archer compair them to The Iconains . Which Species has the superior technology the advantages an disadvantages of both species . Who is better .
Isn't it suggested the Tholians are also not native to the Milky Way? Considering how unique their physiology is I'd say its a strong possibility.
they seem more to have been constructed and are still native
Not in any canon material.
*spoilers*
They made the iconians cannon.
The Iconians have always been canon. They weren't made up for STO. It's just the specifics of STO's plotline that aren't canon.
Thank you this was so interesting
Isn't that the whale probe in the thumbnail? Did you not talk about that one or did I miss it?
Perhaps the space amoeba lives inside the galactic barrier & is native to it - heck maybe it is even a bunch of them generating it's energy field in the 1st place ?
26th Century Coaxial warp drive is capable (with a fair number of years) able to get to another galaxy.
Thought question: would the Federation, if it had a drive system that could breach the galactic barrier only once, send a ship on a one way journey of exploration and why. Oh, the ship can still communicate, it just can't cross the barrier again.
Was speculated the tholians were intergalactic based on starfleet battles
I wonder if the 'Giant Amoeba' was actually created by the Galactic Barrier...? Maybe when the Valiant was destroyed, or even when the Enterprise went in.
I heard that the Tholians might be from another galaxy. Idk if that's true though. But it's fun!
sigh so the dooms day weapon was basically a prototype weapon of the DMA in 3989 or w/e freakin year discovery is in now an Picard warned them bout it
Very good and informative videos!!!
How did you forget the Tholians?! In apocrypha they originate from the Messier 81 galaxy.
Would you classify the aliens from the STNG episode "Schisms" as Extragalactic or Extradimensional??? I call them the click click monsters.....
The Kelvin don't need to emigrate to the Milky Way galaxy. They just need to wait for a couple of billion years until the Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies merge/collide.
6:55 Apologies in advance, but, to this day, I can't look at the Ornothoids without having the following pop into my head: ...
...
..."CHICKENNNS FROM OUTERRRR SPAAAACE!"
I'll see myself out now.😊
I mean you could do a whole startrek show outside the Galaxy.
Not sure if this applies but what about the civilization the "reprogrammed" Lt. Barclay?
No, they were from the center of the galaxy.
Shame the Discovery crew couldn't all get godly powers from the barrier like Gary Mitchell did to even the playing field against the 10-C
USS discovery made the barrier crossing look easy
@@joeswanson733 To be fair, they have 900 years of technological advances going for them at that point.
Weren't the bluegill alien parasites from conspiracy also at one point extra-galactic?
Great video 👏🏻
All you would need to do to destroy a planetary alliance would be to go to their capital planet and warp speed into it
So, uh, you forgot the machine species from Picard Season 1.
Picard doesn't count.
I think the machines were extra-dimensional, not extra-galactic.
@@stevenwilgus8982 You're goddamn right.
In apocrypha, Voyager was ABOUT TO exit the galaxy. But how far they got before the universe was erased was not depicted.
Quite a coincidence and kinda reassuring that you uploaded today since I had a nightmare that you nearly lost your channel to DMCA abuse and decided to abandon sci-fi stuff in favour of a career in chess
Star Wars also has the galactic barrier, and I bet there is several others
The planet destroyer was said to be a prototype of a much larger craft created by Guinan's people to defend the milky way.
V'Ger's machine world and the Whale Probe's makers were in all likelyhood extra galactic.
good point.
Lol the traveler, I wonder if that’s where bungie got the name for their traveler.
If Vader invaded our galaxy with his Imperial fleet he will find out that Force powers do not work in our galaxy.
It's always a headache when writers don't care, and you as the viewer have to do the writing for them.
They established earlier in the season that there are places the Mycelial Network doesn't reach, specifically the pocket subspace left behind by the DMA. I think its pretty safe to assume the Hyperfield has a similar property.
don't matter they went through the barrier as easy as the old saying easy peezy japanesey
These are not in any way contradictory. You're talking about going to another dimension, not somewhere else physically in our universe.
Anyone else hear ice cream truck music around 5:56?
What game does the ship footage come from?
Star trek online
What about the Whale Rod Satellite from ST: IV?
can you cover Extra dimensional entities and threats
wasnt Gomtuu suggested to extra galactic?
So, does this mean that the Tauri ships in Stargate have more advanced engines than all of Star Trek? Since they travel between galaxies quite often.
Yeah, but they use Stargates, not shipboard stardrives.
@@markfergerson2145 Asgard and Lanteans engines are capable of traveling between galaxies. They inherited all their technology to the Tau'ri.
@@markfergerson2145 As LEtranger said, it takes a BC-304 like the Daedalus about 3 months to travel from the Milky Way to the Pegasus galaxy, because they're using Asgard engines.
@@davitto01 yeah, but add in a ZPM to the engines and it currently cuts down the travel to about 4 days.

You forgot those... things Soji tried to bring to the galaxy in the end of the first season of picard!!!!
wait did he not talk about the aliens from discovery season 4?
What about “O”? He is imprisoned outside the Milky Way galaxy
Would you consider 8472 as extra galactic threat?
What about the fried-egg parasites? (Sure wish they'd shown up again in ST:TNG or ST:VOY)
isn't the Crystalline Entity an Extra-Galactic being?
except it's no longer a threat
it is always fascinating to discover what can exist outside our own galaxy i think that barrier was put there so that humans one day figure out fully to traverse it and truly go above and beyond naturally
Bro the traveler took the enterprise d to the ascendant plane
So why did'nt anyone on Disco get super mind powers?
Why didn't they in By Any Other Name and Is There In Truth No Beauty?
Star Trek pretty much abandoned the idea of humans having psychic powers after TOS.
The first ship to leave the galaxy was the SS Valiant. RIP
Also the barrier could be against something very specific, only hindering starships by accident.
it means that the universe is super big that the chance of you running to a new galaxy is actually not that common.
Planet Killer could have used a wormhole
🖖
How about the being in the undiscovered country that was trapped on the planet past the barrier
That was at the center of the Milky Way. Similar kind of barrier, different place.
What about the 10 c
The tryanids invade the star trek universe hahahahahahahaha now that would be funny for the Feddie's to deal with.
Its too silly.
have you ever seen the edge of the galaxy?
that's what i thought
Theo Marcluse, had he lived, would have made a GREAT Lex Luther... 😏
Hello rick! :)
Hello!
Discovery also leaves thr galaxy in season 4
Doomsday sent by the Iconians?
if the doomsday machine were to travel between galaxies it must be super FTL and also have more energy stores than what the episode shows.
😊👏
The fact that Kelvans and other extragalactic entities like the ones in Cat's Paw only show up in TOS shows how poor and less imaginative TNG and the following series are when compared with TOS (not even counting the socio-political/philosophical commentary level of TOS). Even the Q are just more like comical devices than actual interesting plot elements.
woops this episode starts off with STD right off the bat darn shame that
Season 4 disappointed me greatly, just drags on an on...
