Hand Dug Well Part 1

- This is the first chronicle of my attempt to hand did a small irrigation well on my place here in Montana. I am using a 6" auger post hole digger available at most hardware stores. The cost of having it dug is about $2100 so this is in part an attempt to save money and part because I love to see if I can do stuff like this on my own. I am not encouraging you to undertake such a project but if you are I hope my experiences might provide you some insight. The difficult conditions of my soil might not translate to yours. If your water is within 20 feet of the surface I see no reason this could not be accomplished as a project of your own. Know your own laws and limitations. Having looked at and experimented with a sand-point I think this is better. Larger casing means more water to draw from and so far I have been able to get through soil that would have crushed the sand-point anyway.
NOTE: In the end I used a sandpoint by driving it down my casing. Having pre dug the hole made that process much easier AND more importantly I have easy access to the top of the well should I need to get back into it.
Hey I wrote a book, a book about zombies. What can I say I love me a good zombie apocalypse story. You can get it on Kindle, check it out? I would love some feedback and maybe if you liked it could you help me out a leave a review? Thanks!

Yes, pull a pin and it comes apart. I put one about every 8-10 feet, more than that was too hard to deal with. Mine was the 7 inch auger.

Still working on part 2. Just had more and more cave in issues but have come up with a way to case it as I go. Trouble is I have hit a rock and can't seem to get by. Not giving up yet...
The annotations make the video very entertaining!
When you showed the mine rail I hollered Yeah!!!! Next, I was as disappointed as you were.
Could be, the silts and stuff. I have seen wells dug that way, this is simply another way. Since we have so much gravel I am not sure how effective it would be overall.
I hand dug a well down to 35 feet. At about 25 feet I hit a rock about the size of a football. Used a mirror to put a beam of sunlight down the hole and shot the rock with a .338 Winchester Magnum. The bigger the caliber the better. It shattered the rock with one shot and I kept drilling away.
Crazy idea but I love it.
, damn a .338 win mag...it give as much recoil as it gives! That will take care of a rock!
For any future shallow well enthusiast you can always take a PVC pipe or galvanized pipe 3/4 to 1 in for the solid brass high pressure hose nozzle on the end of 1 pipe and a threaded end for your hose on the other end of the pipe and you can cut through mud stand dirt it will help too break up the dirt to get around boulders and it works really well for doing this type of a thing going under sidewalk the running sprinkler line for what it's worth
LOL did that when I was going up on the farm.
we went 80 feet on one well trying to hit water.
we pulled up it up and used a peacon tree beside us to lean it against it
until we got the dirt out then lower it back down.
The basket unscrews, you add a pipe with a threaded coupling. Hard to unthread pipe when you have a load of dirt and 20 feet of line to deal with so I made a quick disconnect. 1/2 inch rod inserted inside the water line sticking out 6 inches. I then drilled though the water line and rod about 2 inches down the line on each side and inserted a 1/4 inch bolt like a pin. Then all I had to do was pull the pin and the pipe would separate without having to uncrew the pipe thread connection.
@@acme663ryo thank you for explaining very interesting
Very cool - thank you very much!
I'm going to try this down here in Florida with the sugar sand lol - I'll figure it out...
Good stuff m8
curious how it went? im about to try this here in florida. how deep did you end up going?
Your written story is sooo funny....thanks.
It is the 6 inch seymour if I remember correct I just got pipe and couplings
Thanks a bunch I think I well buy one and try it. My water table is only 15' down through red sand and clay. My grandpa said their is a under ground river that runs under the whole valley here in Leflore co. Poteau Oklahoma
It is 3/4 water pipe so I had the hardware store cut and thread a few shorter sections, say 3-4 feet, so that adding them didn't make the whole system too awkward to handle. When it got too deep to pull the whole thing out intact I added a quick disconnect by welding a pin that slipped into the pipe and then drilling a hole though to add a bolt. Lift it up, hold it, pull the bolt, lift the next section. Did I explain it ok?
Buenísimo! Gracias por tu video!
I took a large concrete bit cut it in half and welded it to conduit. One piece on each end. Then I used my electric impact driver and turned the rocks into pebbles. With couplers you can make it any length.
Perfect Video. But if you can add your tools on our portable drill rig AKL-40, that will help you more efficiently and faster to finish your drill project there.
I did mine the same way. Bored until i couldn't get any dirt out of the ground (tooooo wet) I used a 6 inch schedule 40 PVC pipe as a casing and an electric jack hammer (for pounding pipe) I'm 18 feet with a 5 foot sand point.
would never want to make an enemy of this man....must be a former US Marine...improvise....adapt...and overcome.....WOW!
He's creative and trying his best

love the annotations
i salute you my friend patience is a virtue
You made a good helpful video keep up the good work
wonderful work
should have used a jetted Brady well point you could have jetted it down and hooked up the pump in the matter of just a few hours...
Cool, those work in fist sized river rock now?
we also use them for fence post instead of post hole diggers
I could only wish my well could by dug by hand lime this! But neighbors wells are all 100+, need more than by hand esp rock involved!
Just ordered mine!
very good, thanks
Of course everyone has a chunk of mine rail laying around! ;)
I discovered a trick to those rocks. Take the auger off have another small joint of pipe with a blunt point to attach to the end instead and use the whole thing like a rock bar. As long as its not just one solid rock you can keep going. I have dug 3 well like this so far and hit iron ore on two of them. Without being able to pound on it for a little while I would have never made it. Shame I didn't discover that trick until the second well.

you can use a hand mirror to shine the sunlight down the hole..
Sometimes you can turn the auger backwards for a few turns and move a rock that is sticking out of the side to another place where the mud matrix will hold it back in the side.
From morocoo thank you On this idea
espero el siguiente video.
Very good
what size plastic pipe would your digger fit through???? (for a well casing)
My dad has been doing this for the past 2-4 months and he’s currently at a depth of 5 meters /16 feet
Unless they are real big the auger will knock them loose. Otherwise try prodding them out with a long pole.
Hi, which conections or tools did you use to add an extension?
Very effective tools specially in third word country. I m from Pakistan and these days I am searching this type of tolls for planatation.
any esy proses??
Oh ok! I found 2 different types of seymour post hole augers. One is a 6" diameter hole auger and the other is the same thing "but" its adjustable to where you can adjust the head to 6", 7" or 8"....I comprehend the head removal & the connecting of the 3/4" dia pipe..Now im trying to comprehend the last part! The whole idea is to remove the auger head by using a pull pin to make it easier? Also did you remove each section as you came up out of the hole or every other section or lifted it all up?
Thanks Nelson.
What is that tool? and where did you get?
Donde Comprarlas
Powder nailer into the rock to break it up?
vou savez pas si je peu trouver un tel produit en algerie ?
hola, donde consigo una de estas.
I would test the nice looking river gravel for gold
From looking at it in the video....Does the handle just screw off at the T, and then you added a 3/4" straight coupling and then screwed on a section of 3/4" pipe??? Thats how it visually looks too me....I didnt know the exact measurements until you just mentioned it.....Now the last part..the added quick disconnect...Was that to remove the handle & add more pipe?? Im not comprehending that part! Thanks for the reply back! I have a cabin a few miles off road, it would be nice to have water!
donde puedo conseguir seymour aus6
donde se puede comprar la herramienta where can i buy the tool
@deanlisenby Hit water today, part two up soon.
How did this end up working out, did you hit water eventually?
@@samohtntrel4346 been irrigating with a 3/4hp pump off the well for nearly 10 years now

in a galaxy far , far away... there is someone trying to dig a hole
If it was collapsing as you went why didn't you slip a section of casing in?
I did, its in the videos.
Do you have a video on how to make the extension that you are using ?.
those dang gold nuggets always mess up the auger.
Maybe in fl. Up here in pa. Would take 100 years to dug one by hand
This only works in deep sandy soils. Should have been cased and grouted to protect aquifer.
Id be sending caseing down as you dig. But first , I would of put all those tailings through a sluice. Thar might be gold down thar. Maybe atleast enough to buy you a few beers when you get hot and thirsty. hehe
donde se compra hand dug well y cuanto cuesta
Which Auger is that? The Seymour AUA2, AUS6? Did you buy the extensions made by Seymour, or did you just go get some pipe and couplings?

Great videos. My seymour auger just came today. I had previously tried to use the water drill method to wash down a 2" PVC pipe, however I kept hitting a rock. The auger had me optimistic I could power down deep enough for a shallow well. Tested it out a little bit tonight and it takes rocks out fairly easy that are within the 6 inch diameter hole, the rocks that are "half in" and "half out" of where the hole would be are troublesome. How do you get these out? Saw you had a lot of rocks.
Thailand digging deep water artesian they used a big giant screw driver being pushed by heavy duty motor & out then go back again until they hit the main water stream then install a 8 inch in diameter pipe with a thread sealed in white teflon,..
what name of the digging tool
My Brother thanks for all
And i will ask you one question
How money meter diging by this tool please tell me
were can i buy one

I've seen this in Minecraft! He's hit Bedrock!!
Were did you get your auger post hole digger at?
good video, after drilling do you simply fit a PVC wall casing from keeping it collapsing? And you said drill holes in the bottom of the pipe to make it semipermeable for the water to pass in and fill it. Im going to be this in Southern Colorado. How do you draw water from the well? I want to use a water pump that brings it directly into my cabin, please let me know your thoughts
After trying several other things yes that is what we did.
okay cool thank you, where did you acquire that tool? lowes home depot?
Amazon.
For the most part it didn't matter for me, ground is the same down there.
I have a ? where can I buy a Seymour. I been looking but have not found one yet.

en algerie on ne trouve pas une tariere manuelle dans le marché .; ce qui existe c'est des tariere avec moteur ..
et ce n'est pas evident de fabriquer un tel outil .. la soudure peut ne pas tenir ..
if you had a water hose pouring water down the hole would not that lift a lot of material out of the hole
Where did you buy the extra line or metal pipe for the stuff u used to dug.
3/4 inch water pipe, any hardware store.

Where do I buy it? Can you give me the name of tool please thank you
Hi, thanks for the video it's fantastic, I'm in Colombia, could you give me the name of the amazon tool?
Seymour 21306 AU-S6
Where did you find all your extension bar for your Seymour hole digger?
ITS PRBABLY JUST PIPE THREADED PEICES AS YOU CHOOSE LENGTH
You would have needed a temporary well casing like a pvc pipe.
...so you didn't watch the videos I take it.
Great video. Lots of clever ideas here. See you buy your open finger gloves the same place I do.
What is the tool your using called, bringing up the sand to make the well's whole
Hand post hole auger.
put a 6 in piece of pvc in the hole so it dose not collapse and drill holes in it so water can come in
La barra que uso para romper la roca tocaba fondo a poca distancia y.. es muy corta en comparación de lo largo que está la pala con la que escaba ... Creo que el vídeo es falso ... Veré si hay una segunda parte
um,,,3.5 HP, ice auger?
I need this product
Where can I buy the extension
It is regular 3/4 water pipe. Any hardware store can cut and thread it for you. You will need a 3/4 coupler for each joint.
Nice
Please upload how to make that tool..tnx
Amazon has it, link in description
can you purchase one of thoes in a lowes store
Mike - Harbor Freight / & yes Lowes (I believe)/ Home Depot / Tractor Supply, and places like that

why wouldn’t he put an extension instead of bending to ground. And the larger the handle, the more power to turn easier. Auger at end of first pipe section, wider width handle with one or two pushing it might have busted the rock. Or a sharp point under basket. Though manual, using some of normal well drilling techniques might help, put threaded pipe in hole and add as you go along to keep sides from caving. Plus at sometime you have to put a pipe(s) in so it would be easier to start while shallow and keep screwing on next section as you go.
Just watch it and you see what we did and why. I never understand comments like this. Also if you try to put the extension on to early then the whole thing is too far in the air to comfortably turn. While it is easy to screw in an extension while it is in the hole it can be very hard to to unscrew the handle to add them. Eventually I made a quick joint at 10 feet to make this easier. Trying to unscrew extensions while removing it to dump the dirt is both frustrating and ineffective as all the dirt falls back down with the jostling.
You want irritating? Try coral rock in Miami,FL
I've used this same auger method to put in 3 wells. It lessens the chance of stripping pipe and coupling threads because there is less pounding. In hard pan I drop a heavy wrecking bar down the hole to break things up so the auger can pick it up. I augered a well in yesterday and in less than an hour I was in ground water. Good system.
I did, nothing.
Muito bem gostei muito

hook a water hose to the top of the spudding bar and you can jet the hole on down. the extra water will soak into the sides and make for a more stable hole-side.
How long is that Auger tool?
You add pipe to go as deep as you want.
