As a long-time AAA programmer, "soft lock" means specifically that you can't advance but the game still accepts at least some input. So yes, the classic power-up traps are soft locks. A lock or hard lock is if the game actually totally freezes and you have to restart the software, like that one Carl troll level.
And in mario maker in general a softlock is a trap where you cannot die and have to wait out the timer or just start over. If theres a spike or something else that you can die to its not considered a softlock, but rather a trap. Or thats how I see the term used most of the time without it being controversial. I use the terms regardless if you have a checkpoint or not cause its still not a normal trap but something you have to start over for to continue playing (or wait out the timer ofc)

I gave it a go. I got 36 with a jumping as fast up as a could then sending it until next the bottom. Still a couple hiccups, though not sure 2 while seconds worth. Would love to see turbo mash. Couldn't mash myself to victory

The worst part about the first level is that it isn't even as bad as it could be. The least the creator could've done would be placing a sideways trampoline at the very left to prevent the mushrooms from going offscreen. If you're going to be evil, at least be optimal about it.

For example, blocking off a hole with hidden blocks is clearly a trap, but mistakenly leaving a space above semisolids where you could get stuck could be due to a mistake and not intended.

I kinda liked that 'auto-level at the 3:00 mark, lol Allow me to make the case against the boo: Fpr starters, the level is exactly as advertised. He just played it poorly. And doesnt like those types of levels. For being 'auto' it seemed to have creativity in setups and multiple times even faked him out into thinking otherwise as well. This was more than a copy/paste refeshing formula level.
There's a question mark on ot and he just barely made it in time after many attempts, still at a loss to how the clearcheck was significantly faster. Poor report

Yeah really. I'm just a casual Mario Maker viewer and I have known who JBizzle is for years at this point. He has one of the two Miis that I recognize with the other being Z7. They both pop up as world record holders every few episodes in this series.
A softlock stops you from progressing but you can reset the level and try again without closing out the game. A hardlock makes it where the game can't be reset and you have to turn your switch off (like that one Carl level where you put the buzzy beetle shell on your head, have water going down, and if you hit a wiggler it just hard locks your game).
The same people that criticize your use of the term soft lock are those that like “refreshing levels”. I honestly would play the game more if I could turn off those terrible non level headache inducing little Timmy sugar rush stages.
