Completely new to colour grading. Had no idea what I was doing. This was a genuinely such a nice little tutorial to follow for a complete beginner and my footage looks 100x better than when I was just mucking around with the colour wheels.

Some might argue that you should convert the footage into DaVinci wide gamut in your first node, and from DaVinci wide gamut into your output color space (like Rec709) in you last node, the color grading being done in between.

Thank you so much for this in-depth video, Casey. At 2:20, I saw you brought down the brightness of the entire shot using the Offset wheel. Wouldn't it be better to bring down the Gamma instead to prevent the shadows from being crushed?
I am genuinely curious because I shoot most of my videos slightly overexposed to retain detail in the shadows. I generally just bring the Gamma wheel down a bit and put the highlights to around -20 to make the image look less bright.

I just discovered your channel and I really like it. I'm completely new to video and DaVinci but I know a bunch of technical details. Probably enough to be dangerous. Right now what I am mainly interested in capturing the best quality video for the purpose of grabbing the best quality stills off of it. I don't care about audio right now I just want the best quality still. The free version of DaVinci doesn't support 10-bit 422, or 8 k, so I need to deal with that limitation. Should I shoot in s-log or is that going to raise my noise levels too much. Remember I only care about what the final still looks like when I export it as a TIF.
    My camera is Sony A7R5

    • @CaseyFaris

I choose all the right settings for my Sony A7S iii but it lags on playback, and when I delete the CST node, it all works again fine. Now I tried this on another Project, same exact following of instructions, and it's fine, the CST doesn't turn red. Any ideas, as I want to use your method as it's great so thank you !

Is there a way (or shortcut) to enable or disable ONLY ONE section on a Color node in the color tab?
Not the whole node like CTRL+D, i need to enable or disable just one section, lets say a "before and after" for only the primaries.

Great vids. Thx! Noob question. I have some drone (Magic 3) clips that I’m trying to show before shots shot in log and after color grading as well as compare D-log to Normal 8 bit footage and I want to do split screen or transitions from one to the other.
How do you do the nodes to do this? I tried putting the different clips in the single timeline and then I try to separate them into one timeline over the other but if I apply the color space transform for the log to a clip and it affects the whole timeline same with if I kept it in normal. How do I separate them?
And if you have tutorials with a deeper dive into Nodes, I’d appreciate seeing that.
I’m on a Mac using da Vinci 18 free version.

    • @CaseyFaris

CST is the final piece you want your footage to run through, however you put it on first so you can make adjustments while looking at the corrected image.
Basically you're doing everything to the image before the CST, but seeing how it affects the image after it runs through the CST.

But there is something confusing here: Thinking about your way of putting the CST node at the end of the nodes chain, I wonder if the settings "Output color space" and "Output gamma" refer to the output of the node itself? or the output of the final export (delivered file)??? cus if it is the second case, then putting the CST node at the end of the chain will not make sense. So having done more searching, I realize that there are very complicated work arounds that drastically increase file size with codec conversion to options like Prores or you can just buy the paid Studio version. So I went ahead and ordered a Black Magic Keyboard editor which comes free with a DaVinci Studio license. I guess nobody else is using the free version on this page. I never had any reason to consider the paid one until now.
