Looks like a little space ship, I LOVE it
If my job was 40+ miles away I would buy this car in a heartbeat.
PHEVs don’t make sense if your daily commute is longer than the EV range (for the majority of the year). The whole point is to be able to do the majority of your driving in EV, saving the ICE for longer trips. This means your actual mpg will be incredibly high, your maintenance will be minimal, and you’ll have a minimum of heat cycles on the ICE. Folks buying PHEVs to not plug them in or daily them beyond the range are screwing themselves daily.
20*
I have a 2019 Prime. My average mpg since new is 160.
@@EUC-lidyes they do. You get the first 40 miles all electric then the rest of your commute is hybrid. You average mpg for 50 mile round trip commute would still be ridiculously high.
@@Localtraveler2376 most PHEVs get worse mpg than the lighter hybrid in the same car. If you still need to heat cycle the engine just as much, still burn gas every day, and visit the gas station every week you’re not really saving anything. Just by a standard hybrid and save many thousands of dollars and get better mpg day in and day out.
I see the new generation ones a lot in my area. They seem to be a hit and im glad they finally changed the look!
I love the car but that center gauge cluster though… 🤷♂️
@@gstevens6948pretty questionable, definitly a gimmick not a fan.
Yea I've seen alot where I live
Finally ! A Prius that is not hideous. And I saw a race where the Prius raced a dodge charger RT and I was impressed by how well it kept up with the charger RT in the roll race.
@CoolCars1-jl7rh nah I disagree. The previous Priuses are pretty hideous. This one looks quite decent. It's not the best looking car in the world but it's not a car I would be embarrassed to drive.
@CoolCars1-jl7rh you need your eyes checked if you think this looks anything like a chevy cavalier.
@CoolCars1-jl7rhNo one will take you seriously 😐 with that. Chevy Cav. 🤦🏼♂️
That unlock chime is what the train crossing bell sounds like in Japan. So happy they are using their wonderful sounds and chimes in their vehicles.
The cargo tray is white because it’s recyclable. Great video as always.
I think you meant "cheap". White styrofoam is the base out of everything cheap. Cups, plates, coolers, etc.
Why would anyone recycle it?
@@erikpenabella599I think they meant made out of recycled material would be my guess
I thought it was because it was quieter.
Superb car.
Toyota has hit a home run.
I got my 2023 Prius Prime XSE Premium in September. In the 6 months I've had the car, I've only put $35 in gas. That's in California, where gas is more expensive too.
I love driving it in EV mode. It has a good amount of low-end torque, so it's fun to drive from a dead stop. When I need more power, I switch to HV mode. I drive about 10-15 miles per day so I charge it in my garage every 2-3 days. The EV range has increased by a couple of miles. Was regularly 39 miles, and now it's 41 miles.
BTW, I paid MSRP and waited about 6 months for it.
I have a 2019. The best car I've ever had from a practical standpoint.
@@CaliSteve169Not surprised. Before my 2023 Prius Prime, I bought a 2004 Prius new and had it for 19 years and put 281,000 miles on it. Best car I ever owned until now.
@@mrxman581did you ever replace the hybrid battery on your 2004?
How often do you drive to be 35 dollars worth of gas in 6 months? Unless you only drove it in hybrid mode.
Any idea how much its adding to your electric bill though?
I never thought I would simp for a Prius, but here we are. I can't believe the lengths I'm going through to get the trim/option package I want.
This was a 'perfect' car review. I like how you did POV and to the point. It's what I wanted to know about the car. Thanks for your time.
I bought a 2024 Type R couple months ago, and my friend traded in a car to get this new Prius Prime. At the time, I had 150 miles on my Type R and had about a quarter tank of gas left on my first tank. My friend in his Prius Prime had 400 miles on his Prius, and had only used about a quarter of his gas tank lol.
damn LOL This is the car I wanna go camping in!
Update: He now has 1600 miles and still has a quarter tank left. Never filled up yet.
@@CoachShrugsbeauty of the phevs, if your common commute is served by the battery gas lasts sooo long.
Update 2: He filled up for the first time with 2450 miles on the odo
Wow… first time I’ve ever seen someone drive a Prius that hard and it performed pretty freaking well! got a 2016 Prius myself and very tempted to upgrade but I’ll probly wait a few years for the kinks to get worked out
I have driven my 2008 hard enough to slide the front tires a bit. But you have to remember the original reason for this car was not sport, so the fact that it can do anything intense is just extra.
The new Prius is the best new commuter on sale, bar none. It's also the best car for green people (the 2023 Prius Prime is the most environmentally-friendly automobile on sale). Now, if only they could make more of these new ones (they're so desirable that I can't find more than 2 new ones in my area).
14:34 0-60 was about 7 seconds for anyone wondering
thanks!
Best test of the Prius Prime I’ve seen. Good to see you properly testing it in EV mode. Got one on order from the first batch to arrive in the UK. Only two models will be available. Design and Excel. Choice of seven colours and pleasingly NO options. Went for the cheaper Design in silver with 17 inch wheels.
Seems very nice, thanks for a well down to earth assessment.
Per my handheld stopwatch:
0-60 is 7.3 sec, versus 11.8 secs in pure EV mode.
both of those numbers are more than enough for everyday driving. My 2008 Prius on papergets 10.2, I almost never put the pedal more than half way down, and I still pull away from most people at lights(in the beginning).
This car is gorgeous.
Truly rock solid car
No rear vents, single zone climate control, and extreme wind/road noise is unacceptable for a $40k car
40k is the new 25 to 30 honestly
@@J3wFro69 yes, but how can Tesla have way better speakers than JBL for a base model, rear vents, VERY quiet road noise/road noise (engine noise obviously aside), dual climate zone, and cameras all around the car for only $38k?
I test drove the new RWD model 3 and the new Prius prime and was shocked that the Tesla had double paned glass all around and you hear 0 noise from the outside. Also on the road you don’t hear any road or wind noise. The Prius prime you hear roaring off the road and wind constantly and that’s just in EV mode. Also the Tesla had cameras as blind spot monitoring on top of the animation. Also the speakers in the $38k RWD was so crisp and sounded like it had a subwoofer when it didn’t. The Prius had JBL and didn’t sound anywhere as good as the model 3.
It makes me think how Tesla can sell so much for $38k and the Prius prime for so much for so little refinement.
@@Alec15000 The build quality difference between a Tesla Model 3 and a Toyota Prius Prime is a chasm. I'll take elevated road noise over squeaks and rattles any day of the week. I'm not even going to get into the fact that a blindspot camera in the dash is a gimmick vs having a notification light in the mirror. However, I wouldn't be surprised from the car company that removed the indicator stalk to save money.
@@hamsterbrigadeSorry buddy, this isn't the case from 2024. The new 3 has essentially removed and made that complaint redundant, so your point is moot.
Then don't buy one? But obviously Toyota feels like people will, so they've priced accordingly. Unsure where your confusion is? "But, but but the Model 3...." (Return to start of this reply)
That's beautiful, even prettier than the last generation! I would buy one of these if the cars weren't so expensive here in Brazil (Honda Accord, for example, is an average car in US, but luxurious and extremely expensive in Brazilian territory). Love your content, POV driving videos are some sort of therapy for me. Greetings from Brazil!
Here's hoping common Brazilian models from Fiat, Hyundai, Ford and so on, start licensing the Toyota hybrid system like everybody else is doing nowadays
Drove a gen 2 prius for almost 16 years. Boy do I wish it looked like this! Have moved on to EVs, but if I were still looking for an HEV I'd have bought one of these. Seems a no-brainer after how long ours lastedd.
Excellent review and presentation, thank you very much. I am convinced I need to get one.
It’s certainly the most appealing Prius yet.
Great review as always!
I think people who balk at the price of this car, forget that the Prius (and Prime by extension)has had declining sales volume over the last decade. This new generation Prius is for a very niche market and Toyota prob assumes that old gen prius owners are going to move on to a hybrid or PHEV crossover.
Toyota has a hybrid option for virtually all their vehicles which puts the prius in a complex position in the lineup. The price point of the prius has moved up market to try and poach consumers who would otherwise buy a fully electric vehicle (Tesla M3 Kia EV6 Hyundai Ioniq 5 etc).
PHEVs are always going to be more expensive than traditional hybirds and that has always been the case.
Our car market has shifted and what was once "cheap" is not the case anymore. In order to keep the prius alive Toyota did a whole 360 redesign which also meant an increase in price. I would say if one is looking for a budget hybrid option then a corolla hybrid is the best bang for your buck.
Well, the 2nd Gen Prius wasn't classified as an affordable car either. I bought my 2004 Prius, top trim, and it cost me $33,000. I paid $3,000 over sticker. There was a 3-4 month waiting period, so I paid the $3,000 to jump the line.
The Prius only became more affordable years later.
You're right about the tires - they're not just weird...they're irreplaceable at the moment. Passed on buying a Prius Prime today b/c they're backordered until late April/May in SoCal. Forums seem to net this out as well - bunch of people with their cars just sitting on blocks b/c they can't replace tires. Can't recommend this car until you can get a flat and fix it...
Love living vicariously through your review of a car that is impossible to buy.
I love this POV style. It makes me feel like that's how it is driving the car. My current commutes are split between one week of driving regular road posted 40-45 mph to just go from home to work. I would definitely put it in EV mode only. On the other week, I gotta do highway driving for about a total of maybe 55-60 miles. I would definitely put the car in hybrid mode for that. The ~$40K for this kind of a small car is a little worrisome, but so are the current prices in general. I like the fact that this Prime version has a solar panel in the roof. I think every car that has some form of electric engine should be equipped with that. It's just simply an additional source of energy to charge the battery. Where I live (in Illinois), we get plenty of sunshine during the summer months. It would totally be worth it.
Judging by the video, the handling of this car looks really really good. And so does the acceleration. I am driving a 2014 Ford Fusion S, and man, that car can feel sluggish, and my transmission has these weird engine stalls at times. Anyway, the point is: I feel like switching to a car like this. If only I hadn't driven that Tesla Model 3 on that one week-end my car was out for service. THAT was a very nice ride!!! But this new Prius seems like the next best thing. Also: I am a renter, and don't have a plug here at my home to charge. So maybe the Hybrid will just do fine.
I think the white styrofoam doesn't conduct electricity as much or at all compared to black.
Yes. He said that in his 2023 Prius review
I love that Toyota saves the engine like this in its hybrid tech. I was initially worried about this in my Crosstrek PHEV (which uses parts from the previous Prius PHEV system) because I live in a cold location and the engine fires up on me sometimes when I do not expect it. I noticed that the engine was warming, but not giving me the extra power until the warm-up cycle was complete.
Thanks for the awesome video. I feel like I just got a virtual test drive.
I would really like a GR Prius or at least a Prius Cross that looks exactly like the gorgeous JDM Crown Sport, just smaller and lower starting price. Still don't understand why we don't get the Crown Sport here in the States.
Power figure of Prius Prime, 0-100km/h is 6.7 sec. Compared to 6.4sec of Porsche Macan PHEV, the figure of Prius Prime is not bad.
0.3 sec slower...but it might surprise Macan drivers.
I think the reason for the foam being white is because that material is better at dissipating static electricity, it’s basically more ESD safe.
I took a look at this updated/refreshed Prius when I was car shopping six months ago. As someone who is on the shorter side (5 ft 5 in), I felt like the headroom in the second row was not adequate. I decided that a RAV4 Hybrid fit more of my needs in the long run.
I’m in the same boat, but a little taller. But unless RAV 4 Hybrids or Primes can someday match or exceed the EPA rated fuel economy of my Prius V, I’m sticking with what I have until it dies on me, and I find myself settling for a standard Prius. As long as l have friends and family with a van or SUV, I am okay favoring MPG over cargo space. Ideally, I’d like Toyota to bring the Prius V back so I can enjoy the benefits of both worlds, but given how poorly it performed in sales last time, I don’t see that happening.
Love watching your videos everyday!
The foam at the bottom of the trunk is white because it has a lower amount of static as compared to the darker foam.
The Prime (and probably the regular Prius hybrid), does not have an "On-Off" for Re-Gen brakes. They are active regardless of your setting choice. Though, you can select how much regeneration takes place. But, you have to set that when the car is not in motion (and via the steering wheel switches). We have ours set to Max to claim as much energy as possible. The higher the amount of Re-Gen you choose the closer to "one peddle" driving you have. And, of course, it's not the brakes that generate the power when slowing, rather, it's the electric motors. There's one hill we travel every day and when we coast down it, the battery picks-up 2% charge. After three+ months (and close to 4,000Km), we have used one tank of fuel in our Prime.
I am still on the fence if I want to replace my PHEV with this.
I certainly appreciate the POV drive & commentary. Thank you.
How good is the JBL sound system? Is it any good? Or is the base sound system the way to go?
I wouldn't know because my 2008 has JBL, 6 disk cd changer, and nav.
really nice car, i just got a 2024 civic si and i know these are not the same type car at all, but this Prius went totaly under my radar... I would have loved to actualy own that i think
It looks very tesla inspired looking at the back end from a side view
I really like everything about this car; but the price is WHACK. Here in Canada the top trim prime is ~$50,000. You can just get far nicer cars at that price point, both new and used
The hybrid corollas look like a better deal for slightly less mpg
Yes!!! Dont buy! Its very bad car and ezpensive!!!!
Can’t look at the price like that when u spend half on gas realistically the car is free or reimbursed whatever you want to call it when it hits 180k-200k miles lol
I'm foregoing getting a used car for another month or two just to save up enough to get this Prius. It's such a banging car. Only issue is I love going to the mountains a lot, so no going into those deep trails through the trees but eh, it'll be worth it. I'm just happy to be getting there in a Prius either way!
I'll definitely buy one of these.
these things look so sick
It's funny how when it's started, you can hear the old chime start to sound before immediately changing to the new chime
I love the way the new Prius looks and that screen by steering wheel is very interesting lol.
For my next car I’m considering one or a Tesla m3
20:24 I believe its about 4 miles per day for the solar roof. And yes this really is the best package for just about anyone.
Seems pretty okay. I would actually consider this, unlike the previous Prius models. Well done, Toyota.
Edit: A second thought, I love that you're a fellow Michigander because its nice to see how you review these cars on our infamous roads.
I think they killed it with the looks of the car. I know it would suffer the MPG, but these would look soooo cool with a nice set of wheels on them lol. I can't tell if they've really made them that much better, or I'm just old now lol. My current cars are an 18 Titan, 17 Camaro SS, and a 94 Prelude Si lol...I don't have a long commute, but if I did I'd very likely consider getting one of these.
Recouping our initial outlay won't take long with our 2024 Prime. Firstly, we got a $5,000 rebate. Secondly, we can charge the battery for about $ .165.That's around one quarter the cost of gas for the battery range. With almost 5,000Km, we have burnt less than one and a half tanks of fuel. Gas here runs $6.75 per gallon..............................
Thanks for the video and review of the car. Having a virtual test drive saves some of us from trekking down to the stealership. I've been a Prius fan since Toyota introduced the car. I bought the first generation in October 2002 and it was fairly trouble-free with 57 mpg on the highway and 45 in the city. The Prime model that you demonstrated to us, I feel has some serious deficiencies: lack of headroom in back for six feet plus passengers (all my immediate family fall between 6 foot and 6 1/2 feet tall. The quirky dash with the faraway gauge cluster with small fonts is a huge turnoff with some part of the steering wheel always obstructing and occupying the crotch area. The thick A pillars are monstrously huge and adds to the claustrophobic attribute of the high visual obstruction to the rear. And the heat-pump doesn't work below 14 degrees in the winter, necessitating running the engine over the electric battery for defrost or heat. I think that a standard Prius or better yet, a hybrid Corolla or Camry might be a better and much cheaper value, especially in a colder climate, and they would have better outward visibility.
I can't believe the price of cars now . I think that the shape of this car brings too many compromises . But I don't think that anyone can argue with the fuel economy of it or the quality . Also 19 in wheels , no bloody way , where I live .
Goodlooking but I prefer my ‘21 Prius XLE. I’ve got the 15” alloy rims which are much smoother than these low profiles with 19” rims. I also don’t like the flimsy trunk cover and compromised low rear roofline. And the price is crazy, like everything these days.
Test drive a 3rd gen 4Runner next!
9:10 those cross traffic beeps while waiting to turn would drive me *crazy* dealing with that every day.
That's what I'm saying too
Thankfully it is very easy to disable those systems!
@@flamegaming760 that's good but that still means it's a bad design. Frustrating because I don't want to disable systems like that I just don't want to get alarm fatigue.
Currently have a WRX as a daily and will be getting the new prius as my next car.
One hella of a car.. especially since Toyota has nearly doubled EV only range since last gen
the exterior is so sleek on this new prius
Regarding the tire sizes, I looked a month ago and there are only 6 tires from TireRack TOTAL for both the 17" OEM sizes and 19" OEM sizes as of right now.
Very interesting! Bizarre that there are so few 17” options…
Good video, am thinking about getting one. Ironic how you pull up behind that Rivian e-truck at 12:35 😄
Great video about a great car!
I can't believe a Prius is one of my favorite looking cars on the road. (Subjective of course!)
Power tailgate is a deal killer for me unless lower trims don't have it. I use my Prius for work and open the hatch 50+ times a day. That mechanism would be lucky to last a month. Not to mention having to wait for it to open and close would drive me insane.
Only the xse premium has the power lift back
How is the road and wind noise compared to 2020 Prius?
I’m getting an LE with awd soon. I am coming from a sports car. I just need a change. Most dealerships are asking above MSRP.
huge honda civic ufo vibes, love it
Toyota, please release a new Prius V in order to have more rear head space, taller rear doors, easier entry/exit of child car seats, and more cargo space. Please make it no longer than this car and improve rear visibility. A small decrease in mpg will be understood, and really don't need low profile tires.
Excellent suggestions. Especially rear visibility, which is so bad in pretty much all modern cars.
That would be the corolla cross hybrid. I love my prius v though.
@@kurtzours Close. The Corolla Touring Hybrid (wagon/estate) is even closer and I'd prefer it over the faux-SUV form. It's sold in several markets but not in the U.S.
I thought I would have problems seeing the control panel at 5'. I have to sit close to the steering wheel. I have no trouble seeing all of the info on the panel. Works well for me.
great video, but outside wind too hard to hear you. hurtful for headphone users like me. otherwise, thanks for upload
Honestly plug in hybrids are what we should be pushing. Not all electric cars. Let people have the option to use gas as a backup.
Always hate the Prius but they have nailed it with the looks alone with this one
This is the 2023 Prius Prime... Not 2024. I bought this car last year.. 🤔
2023 and 2024 Prius are exactly the same.
I noticed that Rivian at the stop light (@12:37)… would you be able to review one of those?
Design is no longer an eye sore and it's pretty preppy. Definitely towards the top of my interest list.
Exterior is quite appealing (never thought I’d say that about a Prius
The ev mode take off power is faster than my old 2012 Prius 😂😂😂
5:41 god i find this sound adorable. i wish it was on all new toyotas or at least all hybrids
need it
I can’t believe I’m debating between this and a Lexus is350 lmao
Lol you're joking right? cmon... will the 350 be used or new? Either way that's a sharp lookin car, if you can afford it how could you not go with the Lexus.. I've always thought the RCF was badass, my bro in law has a '21
lol a used 350 will be much better than this prius. an acutal v6 and its gonna be more fun. This car can barely merge onto a road without flooring it lmao.
Get the is350
@@DrivenToChaos_0331used for sure and I agree with you, I think it’s one of the best looking sedans right now
@pigman117 what aspects of the Prius, besides gas mileage etc, is drawing you towards it? No judgements, I'd never cast any negativity towards a fellow car guy, drive what you love, I'm just genuinely curious about your decision process between the two...
I ordered a XSE Premium Prime last October 2023. Toyota dealer tells me that it might arrive late 2024 or early 2025. Can't get the solar roof in Canada. Had a Volt for 10 years - the Prime is almost the car the Volt was. Have a Maverick Lariat Hybrid now (took 13 months for an XLT Hybrid to arrive and another six to get the Lariat model I couldn't order initially). Fortunately, I am a patient person.
dealer markup is crazy tho
I want this, and I don't even have a license lol
Nice car, good review. Please review how to merge onto streets; at 9:15 you turned left and go straight across the first lane into the right lane. You should turn left into the left lane, then signal to go into right lane. I drive motorcycles and sloppy moves like yours cause accidents.
its insane that this car is faster than the base integra lmao
Why get this when you can get a Camry XSE for less than
It's adorable how you click your feet before getting into the car. Sheesh that Prius is really nice. I don't know how I feel about dealing with two power sources (fuel and electricity). It seems like another gauge to refill and keep track of. Can you compare milage between the Prius Prime and the Prius? I have a 2017 Prius, and the cabin looks larger than the newer models. I also do not like the gauge cluster at all in the newer model. It's behind the steering wheel and small to read. I'm tall and have long legs, and your legs looked cramped in there. Why is that red light flashing along the dashboard? It could trigger epilepsy. That would drive me nuts.
It's always the lower end trims that have the more efficient/tough wheels. I actually prefer the Prime SE wheels.
It so awesome I will buy it when I’m 16
Right now I’m 15
Nice car! But I’d rather buy a Model Y which just dropped to 38,000 after tax credits which is amazing. They’re super popular in LA.
But then you have to look at a Model Y, I'd say it's worth the Toyota tax
@@blue-tb2fd i have to agree. Toyota build and styling is better quality then the Y. I bought a 2010 Prius new. Too bad it didn’t look or perform at all like the 2024.
Is there any chance you can test drive one of those used 2021 or 2022 Tesla Model Y cars that are hitting the used-car market now? (sort of like a how it has aged type video)
I have 2020 Tesla y, other than a small change in range it drives the same as brand new, crazy fun acceleration but I still am tempted by the Prius for it's range. This new one looks like a Tesla wanna be, lol.
Now everybody else trying to copy the design. The new Honda prelude looks almost exactly like it and the 2025 Kia k4 body kinda looks like it from the side with the 2 door thing
Maybe switch to a different mic when walking outside... had to skip the part because my subwoofer was walking out of the room.
Also, not really surprising EV/Hybrids are slow to trickle to the market. There is a reason Toyoda doesn't like EV's, and thats because batteries are a problem.
Can you put it into all electric mode anytime you want, and take it out of all electric mode anytime you want, if so..... where can you find that info???
don't bother with the solar roof, like the mk1 leaf, it doesn't even keep the 12 volt from dying under 2 years, in colder climates
Does it even charge the 12 volt?
When I sat in one I realized it's the first vehicle ive driven where the steering wheel is too small
Looks so much better than the out going one
I’m planning to trade my Xterra for a 2024 Prius.
For that price.. Give me the Crown
You’re comparing a fully loaded Prius to a base crown, this will have more features. Plus the Crown is not a PHEV.
The Toyota Prius is a great hybrid.
Carmakers need to start making cars that fit people. Back in the 90s small cars this size had gobs of headroom and back leg room...now not so much. Also, they are more diff to enter n exit as they are so low to the ground,,,lookin at you civic. As well the steeply rated wind screens are solar gain collectors and hard to clean. Is it any wonder why cuv and suvs are so popular? In ur vid, the expansion joints seen very loud....how is the sound deadening?
Aerodynamic is what really brings up the mpg but yeah I get you I’ve said it before
THAT WIND THOUGH
