    You can use a AA or 9v battery to determine direction without worrying about burning it up. I have one connected to a five volt usb for playing around with, and it draws about one ampere.

      The Keeper You can if your power bank is rated to handle that amount of current. Otherwise, it could fry your power bank or trip the safety protection

    A) way too much paste
    B) no need to spread around, you may actually introduce air pocket
    C) you didn’t even tighten down on the fan to squeeze paste from plates.
    D) do your comparison with a baseline cooler, not with yanking your setup off with leftover thermal paste.
    E) you did zero stress tests to actually test the ability of the cooler to evacuate the heat produced.

      I agree with blankspace. As much as I didn't like him screw down the thing and do benchmarks and stuff, there's no need to be rude. The guy actually still helped us get an idea of the setup. I would request him to make another video though, this time done properly.

    this was a decent test and very informative. I always knew that peltier blocks wouldn't work, because if they did every computer would have them, but you gave real world example so great job!

      Incorrect. Even if they worked: They still would not have them. They risk increasing humidity (and condensation) within the case and their efficiency (in terms of power usage) is ridiculous. Your overall energy usage would increase dramatically. It's so much simpler just to use a larger heatsink and larger fans.

      it's the basic principle. Aluminium transfers heat about 100 times better. More thermal paste = bigger barrier for heat to pass through = less heat transfer.
      Given that all air pockets are filled by a tiny amount of thermal paste, more will only worsen performance.

      More thermal paste does not equal less heat transfer. Do some research. It's been tested by tons of people and all show the same results of it doesn't make it better nor worse.

      This is because mounting pressure will usually squeeze out the excess thermal paste. Thermal paste IS less thermally conductive than the surfaces on either side, but FAR more thermally conductive than air.
      So if, at a microscopic level, your surface looked like this
      /\____--------/\---_____-----____/\--------_____/\
      You'd get the best performance by filling the valleys with thermal paste, and getting none on the highest points. Now, since both sides of the interface are uneven, you effective high points depend on both side's surfaces, and thermal paste is a decent conductor. And again, mounting pressure usually squeezes out the excess. But there is no gain once the surface is coated with a VERY thin layer, since that is more than enough to fill all the microscopic valleys.
      Excess that ISN'T squeezed out WILL lower heat transfer slightly, IF (and only if) there isn't another bottle neck in the heat dissipation system.
      For example (completely made up numbers here, and this over-simplifies heat transfer a bit, but the basic idea holds) Lets say your aluminum heat spreader can transfer 300W of heat per second. Your thermal paste can only manage 200W/s, and your air cooler's copper heat pipes can pull 320W/s, and the radiator can move 180W/s due to a low power fan.
      The whole system is only able to dissipate the 180W/s then, and the 200W from the poor thermal paste layer will never make a difference.
      Again, over simplification. Real heat transfer rates very depending on hot the hot side is vs how cold the cold side is, so an improvement on a better part can move more heat down the chain to the worse part, increasing the temperature delta and therefore improving the bad part a bit. Putting a thinner layer of thermal paste into the example above might mean that the aluminum makes 10-20% direct contact with the copper heat pipes, lessening the resistance from the thermal paste, and moving that layer to 220-230W/s. The extra heat might then change temperature delta in the radiator, which could increase its efficiency slightly (190W/s maybe? Since all these numbers are 100% made up, the resulting number is meaningless of course)

    Try a water cooler with the peltier cooling the water. And only use a rice grain size of thermal paste.

      I actually did it xDD we have to wait for almost 20-30 mins till the water drops till almost 5° and that can be used as Radiator

      @@ZafriusRasnake The optimal thermal contact points are metal to metal, the reason for thermal paste is to fill the microscopic voids (imperfections) on the contact surfaces. More paste lowers thermal conduction, it doesn't improve it.

    I was testing this too and some points to notice. The peltiers cold side will make the thermal paste a solid material hindering the cooling, try without it and then buy something that can go lower than -30C. . Second thing is that you need to mount the cooler to have a pressure. It does not work without it. If you want to completely remove the condensation just but the motherboard in mineral oil.

      I have had some luck with straight mineral oil cooling in the past. I like the concept of combining the 2 however I feel that the overall temp would be null with a full submersion. I assume you mean just fill the mineral oil up to the peltier plate and let the heatsink be above the mineral oil. At any rate thanks for sharing. Please sub if you have not already 😋

    I know of the Peltier plates.. There use in all kinds of DYI ideas.. Have seen it used in a Gaming Rig.. I have thought of doing it with my old PC.. This is the easy way to do it.. Thank you again.. You sire have a new subscriber..

    how do you solve the problem of water, coming from the condensate, which will leak onto the motherboard, only with grease ???

      If you are really serious about using the peltier method than you are going to want to use liquid cooling and put the peltier plates on a radiator. That way you can keep any condensation away form the board. hope you enjoyed the video

    The more efficient way is too use waterblocks combined with this Peltier, a DIY watercooling system with Peltier away from electrical components should cool the water more then the official way.

    Having worked with TEDs extensively on other projects (primarily modulating solid state lasers), I too was curious about the potential for using the TEDs to cool a CPU. Thanks for trying it!

    This is especually useful for CPUs with small die size where thermal gradient is important.
    What about watercooling the hot side while connecting the cool side to a custom loop for chilled water? (Assuming an array of TECs)

    It is important to note the reason of why this "worked" ....
    * You didn´t explain Pelteir plates basics - Cold side depends on how much heat can be removed from hot side. there is a limit on how much heat you can remove from hot side. If cold side is receiving to much heat from cpu, then it will fail. This worked because it was on iddle and temp removed from hot side was enough to keep it at 20C but not lower ... I can bet this will totally fail under a workload.

    A reason this might be a bad example is if your peltier junction is bigger than the CPU retensor for this 775 chip, the retensor will prevent the peltier from making a flush connection with the CPU die, since you can't just rely on a thick layer of heat transfer compound to do the trick. In which case, a smaller peltier that fits inside of the motherboard's CPU retensor for socket 775 would be better. A stock Intel heat sink + fan would need a little modification to fit a peltier inbetween. The junction would also need to be started before booting up the system.

    if you use better thermal paste and screw the cooler down the temperatures go much lower ive seen a 60 watt peltier lower 30 degrees on the cpu

    The best way to use a peltier air cooler is cool down the air inside with an array of them on the inside of the removable sidewall cut to match them and heat sinks on either side of them. Much like the ones you see with "air coolers" made from them. The air flow is heavy and the super cold aluminum sink on the inside gets pretty cold to combat room temperatures.

    Is vaseline non conductive?
    Also, great job. I'd pick a different filler music next time tho... Perhaps you could try testing it under load as well? I'd hazard that the gains will be more when it's running at 100%

      Petroleum jelly is not conductive however many Vaseline products do add water but it is not enough to do damage. I have to assume it is distilled. It works as a protective layer against condensation.

      you never put vasaline on a motherboard for fuck sake .. its petroleum based and will degrade your contacts and start eating your sealant on your board eventually exposing your laser cut circuitry lines and degrading your electrical transfer and ETM .. jesus this guy .. no offense man but i hope some kid doesn't see this and try it..

    As far as i know... i've heard of the freezer unit for cpu cooling back in the 90s when AMD started out with heat issues. Never did i know about this peltier unit back then. I guess, now everything goes online. Many get's to know the term more specifically. I think the freezer for cpu cooling is none other than a peltier unit. Although it did not lasted long because of condensation issues. The sales went dead because of condensation that'll eventually cause the board to died on water condensation. But i believed that the peltier unit is a promising cheap solution and most importantly, it's pretty small and consume less space. It could perhaps also address cctv cameras heat issues . What it needs would be a temp monitoring devices to kick in the circuit to bring down the temperature of a target device and shut off when the device is not overheating.

      today I recommend water cooling and using peltier plates on the radiator portion. It most certainly can be used on a graphics card. Temps vary.

    I would refrain from the Vaseline... since it collects dust and mineral deposits could cause more of a problem than a little condensation. The cooling fan should also create enough air movement to reduce condensation significantly. Also there was enough thermal paste used to lubricate a whale. Displacement after compression means you really need about half a pea size dollop to do the trick. Results are impressive though. Wonder what kind of stress he put it under? An overclock test would have given a nice benchmark too.

    No load on the CPU. Peltier alone cannot cool down a processor thanks to low efficiency.
    Also you did not screw in the heatsink. Mounting pressure makes a whole lot of difference

      GEGEDUBLEWPEE naaahh... The peltier wasn't 'alone'. As you can see, it was 'assisted' by the heat sink.
      The main problem with peltiers as cpu coolers wasn't because it's inefficient, rather it creates condensation which is not good with electronics.
      .
      But yeah, no load test was done, so the effectiveness can't really be determined.

      all the heat from the cpu builds up in the middle of it. You can bet the sides and corner especially was more than a few degrees colder than the middle, which is still not where the temperature is taken. (but as close as it gets)
      in short, the sides will get really cold. which is why applying vaseline around there to shield the cold surfaces from the air is a good idea. (and the reason he had a jar of it)
      However, using peltiers is horribly inefficient. Better to just use water cooling and keep adding radiators to the loop until you are happy with the temps.
      ( or if its cold outside, chuck the radiator through the window (which works really well until summer btw ) )

    so... since the temps arent all that low, probably still above room temp, it doesn't seem necesary to protect the system against condensation, what was it, like 8°C lower? maybe with a better thermal paste and properly secured a 10°C idle might be achieved wich sounds pretty good IMO, heck even the 8°C is pretty good, a stress test woul've been apreciated though...

    maybe integrating a peltierplate to the bottom of the board right under the cpu socket, that would work well and not obstruct any cpu cooler.

    I agree on so much comment, at first, what is the purpose of a heat sink? Right, to take the heat away from the cpu. What you do is force a cold side on the hot side, it is inefficiënt and overdone on the paste.... Yes, thermal paste is bad for your health and should not be so spread out with your fingers. The pressure applied to the cooling unit (heat sink etc.) should sufficiently spread out the paste, it is not the amount but the contact it must make like a very thin layer between CPU and cooling agent. So all in all i am not sure this is a good idea, and as some here say, there was no stress test. Oh and the vaseline, smart thinking, but if the cold/heat coëfficiënt is in balance, then moist out of the air could form droplets on the element, but it is H2O without anything contaminated, so non conductive. Place the motherboard not horizontal but vertical, the moist drips down, that path could use vaseline.....

    That was an excessive amount of thermal paste o_o All you did was create an insulating effect with that amount of paste. Next time use something like a tiny thin line or rice grain sized dab.

      Rice grain seems excessively small...probably won't coat more than a third of the transfer plate at that point. 3 rice grains, maybe :P

    There's a good reason that no one has brought to market a system based on a Peltier cooler, adding 75 Watts to a system that runs 100 W at idle doesn't make sense. The Peltier cell is to inefficient to be of any value.

    Better use tower heatsinkfan and assembly with processor normally, then contact the peliter on aluminum which contacted to processor. Dont forget to limit the voltage for peltier. It will more powerfull and durable.

    So the TEC amperes that are used up - where does that energy mainly go? The hot side? So in essence it will add for example 50w to the cooling?

    there is no hot side or cold side it depends on the polarity if you switch the polarity the number side gets hot while the reverse side gets cold it all depends on how you connect it

      Colder is better generally speaking when it comes to CPU's . You are correct that certain electronics perform worse under cold conditions but CPU's and GPU's love the cold. please sub if you can 😀

      it is not to much of a power draw. So in theory it should not hurt the PSU unless the plate itself fails. If the plate fails it could damage the PSU but that is true for any device attached to it.

      Not needed but feel free to do your own testing. Thermal grease is great for transferring heat from one object to metal. since the plate was flush with the CPU it is really not required. Especially since we are just pushing cold downward. To my knowledge thermal grease is not designed to transfer cold. If you find otherwise please let me know, would be great to investigate further.     apply less thermal paste. the paste fills the tiny gaps and crevices in the steel but apply too much paste and it will restrict the heat transfer

      (Same power cable off PSU to power Peltier & Fan) If I am understanding you correctly yes you can, should be possible. Now if you are implying using the heat of the CPU to generate power via the Peltier and run the fan off that power than I would say no probably not.

    Does putting a lot of thermal paste be the reason for both sides to be hot? My thermoelectric cooler is heating on both sides, i think its because of too much thermal paste

      I wasn't sure when I made this video as there was a small gap so I put more on. the key is thin layer. I thought both sides might help but it really doesn't. You just need thin layer of thermal grease on hot side to heatsink. Please sub if you can 🙂

      The amount of lost potential would really amount to anything. I had a friend that tried a similar concept for the heat sink fan. when it got hot enough the fan would spin a little bit like a few rotations then stop. All he got out of it was a very unstable CPU. What were you thinking of doing?

    to avoid condensation u can use another some kind of concave square plate betwen the peltier and the cpu or maybe try a carbon plate betwen but iot could be dificult to find or maybe you have to close all your computer sealed to avoid air to go inside so no humidity can go inside

      Thank you for sharing. In my ventures I have found the best way to incorporate a Peltier plate is to water cool the CPU and then attach a Peltier to the radiator of the cooling unit. Cooling the liquid is easier to control and don't have to worry about condensation as much.

      Not likely assuming the seal is good (metal plate over the CPU). the moisture build up is based on moisture in the air. water does just materialize or go through the metal. however water dripping down into conductive surroundings. Please sub if you can. 🙂

      that is why I recommend hooking it up externally with a water cooled system. since the power cuts off when the computer turns off no ice forms but condensation does.

    it like the way you get somewhere: try carefully something on old spareparts out and see what happens...
    That is the way i use to work a lot... it begins silly with some low level einstein, but the end product....
    How much watt is your peltier? and yes maybe in watercooling it is a great idea, or with a biiiiiiiiig ass heatsink (or them together) in a zero noise matter... take a big atx tower, and fil the gaps... have some fun...
    or make this happen with a double peltier effect (halveway out on a heatsink a peltier again).. let the mind work...
    it sounds now silly but hey... after a few years a silent overclock machine....
    and if there are some readers who think 'omg that guy is nuts' well. i am.. that is how i got a LOT of things in and around my house workin great.

    how many watts does it actually draw? I have seen youtubers creating usb powered coolers and even using 12v 5a power adapters... can you speak to that? thinking of adding one to a small water block in my liquid cooled rig to compare with radiators?

      possibly could rig it to the side of an all in one unit like the corsair H series. Otherwise you would need to use water cooling kits. To be honest I have had more luck with mineral oil cooling and using bubblers.

    I do not get it. Why it is good to use a peltier module for cooling? It just creates extra heat inside of the case becoulse it has an efficiency of around 15%. Please someone explain this for me I might be wrong!

      a peltier usually has 5 percent efficiency, but after insulation losses it retains about 2 percent. Logically the heat generated by the hot side should get fanned out from the case itself. This is a way to ineffective heatsink for maximum cold efficiency though. Watercooling the peltierplate's hot side would provide quite a bit colder temps on the cold side. Peltier cooling for cpu's is as you say just too innefective. You would need atleast a 200 watt peltierplate with some serious watercooling to see lower temps than ambient.

    WAY too much thermal grease. It’s supposed to fill in the gaps between the metal parts. You don’t want a thick layer.
    Best way is to put a pea-sized piece in the center and let the clamp of the heat sink cause it to spread. Maybe wiggle it a little before screwing down.

    If you read about how peltiers really work, you will find that how this test is done is really wrong, if you put load on cpu it would overheat. That peltier used in test is only 6A one, seen from number and its way too weak to cool loaded cpu.

    It needs to be a to high end peltier to really help, and these are expensive and spend alot of energy so better of spending with a better heatsink and cooler or watercooler. Also with peltiers theres aways the risk of water condensing and even with vaseline it may cause issues.
    Unfortunatly for pcs it isnt much usefull...

    I didn't care that you applied too much paste and didn't spread it efficiently.... I just hate that you got your finger oils all over the CPU and the paste.

    I'm interested in using this method to cool an electric speed controller for RC car.
    Do you think it will be good enough to stop the esc overheating and is it nessaserry to have such a huge heatsink on the sucker? On rc cars space is an issue as you can imagine.

      heat sink would be necessary, however you may be able to get the wieght and size down if you use a small copper heatsink. Maybe copper RAM heatsinks. Only issue I would worry about is power draw.

      @@TheThorns there's always a heatsink on these ESC's bro, there's normally a fan attached but they break with bumps ans small stones.
      What sort of power draw would I bee looking at roughly bro?

      Although I agree, it was just a test and I didn't want to mess with any of my boards that have the ability to overclock. AKA didn't have any spares I don't care about.

      @@TheThorns Sure Ill give ya a sub why not. Good thing about many of this SBC is even overclocked they are good on power. Hell my Rockpro64 I have a fan that comes on if temps get to high and I have literally never seen it come on. May as well not be there. The consistently make these things underclocked as we can see with the first few series of RaspPis all being the same chip just factory "overclocked" so in most cases it should be rather safe to OC I would think without burning them up like you have to worry about when it comes to PCs

      They say that twenty seconds in the California sunshine is too much these days, ever since we lost the ozone layer, but that was before Sunblock 5000. Just apply a pint to your body and you're good for hours. See you by the pool.
