    Your vibrato is outrageous. I don't think many people realize just how hard it is to master a good vibrato like that and play it so consistently. Much respect!

      Brian Morris Hey Brian, thanks for the kind words bud. Yeah, for me vibrato is such an important and many times neglected part of playing. Seems a lot of guys work on their speed, which is great but they neglect their vibrato, so they'll hit the last note of a run and they have what I've heard referred to as "compulsory vibrato disorder" haha! I work on my bends and vibrato more than anything else mostly because I consider that my weakest area. cheers

    • @-Thunder

      @@mikehall4372 Certainly people can try 7s, 8s or 9s. I think in the 70s a lot were playing 8s. My experience is it's mostly a lot of practice over time to build strength, feel and hitting the pitch. Hotel California solo really showed me how much work I needed. This song is a good workout too.

      You’ve said a big mouthful , and every word , right on time , he was one of the best guitarist , I heard back in 1970 ! The first time I heard this song , I was standing lookin out the kitchen window , washin , my dinner plate , and this song came on ! I could feel the hair just stand up , on the back of my neck , and I was only 15-16 back in 1970 , but at that moment , I knew ,I wanted to be a guitar player ! I saw him 3 times , later in all small venues , should right in front of him , and my eyes were locked on his , neck , fingers just watchin him bend , and pull notes outta that guitar , if he’s not in the R&R , h.o.f , he damn wel should have been years ago , before all that rap shit , ….IMHO !

I don't know who you are, and by your speaking voice, you sound like a younger man than myself, but you nailed this one! Mississippi Queen is a model of what a hard rock tune should be. You captured the raw emotion and screamed it at the listener through your guitar........as it should be..........well done my friend........well done

      Exactly right and very well said. My brain turns to goo and runs out of my ears when some of these other guitar lesson channels tell you note by note the string and fret ("verbal tablature," I guess) so slowly and context-free that you're not getting any kind of harmonic or rhythmic framework out of it. And usually their vibrato sucks, which is nearly always a tell whether someone is a player's player or a paint-by-the-numbers pretender. Not to bash beginners since we all have to start from the beginning, but at some point you have to take responsibility for really learning how to play like you mean it, if that's your intention.

    You know I've been playing guitar for well over two decades....and consider myself experienced, but man...(laughing my ass off)..this seemingly simply tune had me draggin' my nuts in the dust! I can't believe how difficult it was for to get these simple bends and riffs down! I must have worked on it now for over 4 hours man! Thanks again for a great lesson, and revealing to me how much I really suck at certain things...

    • @ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials
      @ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials  9 лет назад +16

      AdrianRP1 Thanks for the nice comment Adrian. You're miles ahead of a lot of guitarists because you're acknowledging how hard it can be to play what appear to be simple licks. I totally get that man! I've spent hours and hours working on just bending a note and getting a decent vibrato on it! I still work on that every time I pick up the guitar. I've seen a lot of players who can rip 350 notes a minute but they can't bend in tune and their vibrato is awful! And then there's guys like Gary Moore who could do it all and with so much feel and passion to boot! But to me that's the greatest thing about playing an instrument, you can never stop improving and getting better. Good luck with your guitar playing bro. cheers

Plus he was one of the first , to playa banjo string on the high E string on his guitar ! And he had a great voice , when I was over seas 73-74 I found albums that I never heard , home in the states , lots of deep blues , and almost made ya cry , and there has never been another guitar player like him , and I so do miss his sound !

    'Shutup', You nailed the positioning and the all important 'wEST' Vibrato!!! Leslie was using flat wound LaBella strings in those dayz! Really g00d teach video of an all timeless classic riff/tune. With Leslie's Vibrato, he always pulled the original note back to where he started the pull, and every single note was played like it was the last note he'd every play. I'll have to try those Elixir Nanoweb 10-46 out, they sound killer! Funny, used to know Bruce Egnater in Detroit when he was just starting out in a small repair room as a green amp tech/repair guy at Gus Zoppi Music, located on the infamous 8 Mile Road. Gus Zoppi Music was 5 blocks down from the trailer park that Eminem grew up in--haha. A lot of us used Bruce's small amp with a transistor in place of the speaker to tame our Marshall's down to play the bar circuit. Had a lot of great amp tech's back then, Bruce Egnater and 'Fast Eddie' were the Kats Ass back then. 'Fast Eddie' serviced everyone from the Stones to Merle Haggard, and was the very first amp tech to put a Master Volume switch on a Twin Reverb, way before Fender even thought about it. C'ya & Thanx!

    great lesson, these lead lines were the very first real rock lead licks my guitar teacher taught me many years ago and the song was an oldie but goody then these little leads teach so much bends especially, timing, etc etc everyone of all levels should learn them

      Den Gibson Hey Den, thanks bud. LW is/was such a powerful player and his tone was killer too. I learned a lot listening to him, so melodic yet still had that aggresive bite to it right? Thanks for watching bro.

    Awesome, the original song and the lesson! But I want to set something straight...from reading many of the comments, it seems many people think this is Southern Rock and that Leslie is from the south. Leslie West is a good old Jewish boy from NYC! The lyrics (the only real southern reference here) were written by Corky Laing the drummer of Mountain, and he is from Canada!! Sounds more like Northern Rock, to me! ;-)

      Dackycat So, if a band from England writes a Southern Blues style song, it isn't still based on Southern Blues, it's British Blues?

    • @Dackycat
      @Dackycat 9 лет назад +3

      Biker Tramp And if a California band (the Beau Brummels) writes British Invasion styled songs, it's actually California Invasion. ;-)

    I only recently discovered you and you are already my favorite and remember I got a hundred of you to go see and I've done this for 4 years because I gave up playing commercial music for about 30 years. You do it right the most important thing is give me that song upfront and show me you can play and you can.... emote... And then can you rip the s*** up like nobody's business?! You did and I found out by looking for Mississippi Queen after this that guy did an 8 minute piece that just tore an acoustic guitar into pieces I had never even heard of a guy I'm kind of a Beatles man have you heard of The Beatles? Lmao... Yeah all really good musicians know who the band is... Anyway I wanted to shoot you some kudos thank you so much for what you do and it was almost comical because when I returned to your page here it was the middle of it and I saw this guy teaching and I almost got rid of you and I went oh wait this is like 10 minutes in this is the guy that does it right

    Andy . . . . Total RESPECT for you. I love your lessons! I have never heard anyone play the music I love note for note, breath for breath and tooth and nail the way you do. You're a credit to the guitar playing world. In the words of the immortal Frank Zappa, SHUT UP AND PLAY YER GUITAR.
