  • On August 14, members of the Taliban commemorate the third anniversary of the chaotic American withdrawal from Afghanistan by parading through a former US air base with American weapons and vehicles that were abandoned. Bagram Airfield, once the center of America's war to unseat the Taliban and hunt down al-Qaeda militants responsible for 9/11, becomes the stage for the Taliban’s celebration.
Uniformed soldiers march with light and heavy machine guns, and a motorcycle formation carries the Taliban flag. Pickup trucks packed with people of all ages drive through Kabul's streets in celebration of their takeover. Members of the Taliban Cabinet praise their achievements, such as strengthening Islamic law and establishing a military system they claim provides "peace and security."
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban-appointed deputy prime minister for economic affairs, inspects honor guards during the military parade at Bagram Air Base in the Parwan Province. US Army Veteran Bill Roggio tells Fox News Digital that this parade shows the Taliban rubbing their victory over the US in our faces. Roggio, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and editor of its Long War Journal, calls the parade evidence of US failure in Afghanistan.
Roggio criticizes the Biden administration’s decision to withdraw from Afghanistan quickly, leading to the Taliban having an American-supplied arsenal. Biden’s decision to pull troops faces global backlash after Taliban insurgents retake the country in a matter of days, on August 15, 2021, 20 years after their ouster by US-led forces. Biden had previously told Americans that a Taliban takeover was "highly unlikely."
The military evacuation, which requires thousands of additional US troops on the ground and significant cooperation from the Taliban, ends a day before the deadline on August 30, 2021, leaving behind hundreds of US citizens and thousands of Afghan allies, despite Biden's promise to "get them all out."
On August 26, 2021, during the US military's mass evacuation at Kabul airport, suicide bombers kill 183 people, including 13 US service members. The US retaliates with two drone strikes against suspected ISIS-K terrorists, one of which kills 10 Afghan civilians, including seven children.
The Taliban’s speeches during the parade aim at an international audience, urging the West to interact and cooperate with their rulers. No country currently recognizes the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.
Roggio dismisses the Taliban’s claim of eliminating internal differences and expanding unity in the country as false. He points out that the Taliban has a history of lying about not allowing its soil to be used for terrorist activities against other countries. Despite the grand display of their capabilities, there is no mention of plans to improve the lives of Afghan people. Decades of conflict and instability leave millions of Afghans on the brink of hunger and starvation, with high unemployment and a ban on girls attending school beyond sixth grade.
The Bagram parade stands as the Taliban’s grandest and most defiant since regaining control of the country in August 2021. The audience of around 10,000 includes senior Taliban officials such as Acting Defense Minister Mullah Yaqoob and Acting Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani. Supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada does not attend the parade.
