  • Dave2D review of the 15" Dell G3 (3579). The cheapest gaming laptop from Dell. Starting from $750
    Dell G3 - amzn.to/2Kz5Ojq
The Dell G3 is their cheapest gaming laptop as well as the thinnest gaming laptop they've made. With a reasonable starting price point Dell is offering an appealing product but should you get it over the G5 or G7?
This model here is the 15" unit with a i5-8300H / GTX 1050 Ti / 8 GB Ram. There is also a 17" version available.

The G3 is the thinnest gaming laptop that Dell has made to date but thin laptops are hard to cool. The G7 is still my fav from the Dell lineup this year. Thanks for watching!

I've been using the G3 for 3 weeks already. I went for the i7 with 16gb ram and 512SSD w/1050ti.
I really don't have bad performance and thermals Are really good. However I notice the surface of your model are stripes. Mine are squares. Regardless. I feel this review is focusing more in the cons of the laptop. Personally, I like it, is good for me.
If you're looking for a thin laptop. For sure is note, you can compare thin laptops like Surface pro4, Asus or Mac. If you're looking for thin and gaming. You're looking for a high budget laptop. Cheers.

Both Dave and Bob of all Trades do great content on the entry-level performance laptops. I find the contrast between the two on this model to be interesting. Dave prefers the G5/7 chassis by what appears to be a pretty significant degree, while Bob has stated that he likes the G3 more despite the thermals due to the ease of tear down (it's more screws, but not a layered design like the 5/7 is) and how well the thermals responded to liquid metal.
Overall, I find that Dave is great for reviews on the out-of-box experience and Bob is good for those who are inclined to open up their machine and do upgrades.

They went to the same mistake what HP has done 2-3 years ago with their Greenish gaming laptop.
They made it too thin without considering the ventilation and it'll finally eat itself.
EU and NA people might not know this but when these kind of "gaming spec laptop" came here in SEA region, it ALWAYS have an issues with the thermal.
Even I used 7559, undervolted + cleaned & repasted the cooling system, it still shooted up to 80-85 C and that's on thick laptop like 7559.
I don't know why Dell made this. They should just made G3 like G5 with cheaper material but not too thin like this.
PS. Even this thin, this laptop still weighted 2.5 kg?

    • @archardor3392
      @archardor3392 6 лет назад

1060 max q will have better thermals than a 1060. 1060 Max Q is around 80 TDP where a 1060 is 120 TDP. A 1050 TI is 70-75 TDP and a 1050 is 45-50 TDP. The less TDP, the less heat it produces.

They don't because it's not possible. You simply cannot get everything you want without a high price (or going used), and you can't get everything period. You think you're getting a good deal on a laptop (see: the cheap stuff Dave reviews), they're actually cheaping out somewhere. Screen, ports, keyboard, build quality, the list goes on.

I just bought the G7 with a 1060 Max Q, i7-8750H, 16GB of ram, 128 GB SSD, and a 1TB HDD (upgraded to a 1TB SSD, May put a 2tb SSD in there in the future) for $899. With the 1tb SSD, the total price was $1089, so I’m very happy with it. I also re-pasted the thermal paste and I’m getting much better thermals with even lower fan speeds. Loving it so far!!

Thanks for the review Dave, I enjoy watching your videos...
I was contemplating on getting either the Dell G3 17 or Acer A517-51G and I ended up buying two G3's because the deal was too good to pass up.
The first one is in Blue for myself with a i5 and GTX 1050, I don't game too much on laptops (I have a gaming desktop) and it's mainly going to be used for office work and multimedia consumption with some gaming.
The second I bought for my nephew is in Black with a i7 and GTX 1060, he games a lot on his laptop and also uses it for school and multimedia consumption.
The laptops have not been delivered yet however I'm confident we'll be happy with them when they arrive all considering the price/performance ratio of these G3's.
In terms of the looks, I'm not complaining but I'm with you on the stripes looking cheap/tacky, from other reviews online it seems the chassis is pretty solid and that's more important to me.
I'm going to be re-pasting the thermal paste with some good stuff and undervolting the CPU within safe limits to get the laptops to run as cool as possible after my return period expires.

What about this: dell g3 i7 8750h with gtx1060 256ssd and 8gb of ram for 1100 usd and you change the pannel to a 90% srgb 120hz3ms on for freaking 100 dolar us from ebay (changing the panel on the g3 only requires a pocket plastic card/id) . add 8 gbs of ram, fill the empty drive bay with another 250gb ssd, change de wireless card, undervolt and repaste. youre basically getting a 6 core 12 thread cpu with a desktop gpu on a thin and light chasis with a bussiness look and not jus another stupid red and black gaming laptop, even adding to the mix having a on the go gaming monitor on ir for under 1400 usd. Like come on, the thing even has thunderbolt 3 and ram expandability. how can it be less future proof. or idk, just buy a i5 mac with 500gb ssd and iris graphics i guess :0. Cheers from colombia, im studyng for a physician degree at a local public university. Do the dam vid about this.
