I was peacefully asleep with my window open one night when a barn owl decided to perch on it and announce it's presence. Nothing can prepare you for that level of terror. There was prayer involved, followed by laundry.
That is so funny. And accurate! I had a similar experience my first time deer hunting. I was sitting in my tree stand about an hour before sunlight, and one started screeching. I about went back to the house and called it a successful hunt because I was still alive.
Barn owls actually use that screech to scare stuff into running away, making it so they can spot their prey easier. So they don't really need to be stealthy.
I got one I'll be dammed if I can find it though the sound seems to come from one direction then when u get there it sounds like another...sounds like a babe cos it's screaming every 20 mins...first I thought a teridactil had woke up
Lol. I've heard the first call and figured it was some sort if owl but didn't know what kind. The second call I had no idea was the same bird. Been trying to figure out what flies around my yard at night for a year! Finally I know!
@@jasonreyna7615 Barn owls should ne considered good luck, they eat rodents like popcorn. Old barns here in Europe sometimes have small windows with landing boards for them, to encourage barn owls to make their nests in the building and keep the farm area free of mice. That's why they're called barn owls.
For the longest time, I had no doubt, that the second call was my neighbor’s AC fan spinning loudly, because it wouldn’t stop and sounded loud, sharp and metallic. It’s so different from the usual screech. Then, finally, last night, I vaguely spotted the chirper awkwardly landing on a palm tree, which seemed to have a nest. Thanks to this video, I found out, that the female chirps the male towards the nest. I love hearing the barn and horned owls. They make the night sky magical and cozy.
This is the owl that scarred a friend and I for life as kids. I lived on the edge of the woods and we would go camping back there. We were down camping one night, getting ready to go to sleep, and this is the sound we heard.. It was loud too. And it was coming from the direction we would need to go to get back to my house. We were sure it was some kind of supernatural monster… We were maybe 12. This screech went on occasionally for several hours as we cowered in silence in the tent. Neither of us slept. We waited until the sunrise and booked it for my house. It was years before I realized it was an owl. We told all the kids at school about the monster in the woods 😂
I took my little 6 pound Yorky dog out to have his late night potty break before bed and we both heard this ear splitting scream and ran for the door . I was afraid an alien was ready to take us up to a craft for dissection and observation as it was the most loud and ear piercing foreign frightening sound I had ever heard. Went back out with high beam flashlight and heard it in the top of tall tree with two quieter repeats coming from opposite trees . Knew it was a night beast of some sort and hearing it on here this morning realized what it was . A barn owl with its young in my yard probably looking for a way into my chicken coop . I had two Banty Seabright chickens disappear last week in the dark woods by the coop where they liked to free range . No blood or feathers were ever found . Victims of an Owl or several Owls swooping in for an easy dinner it seems . Found strange looking large poop turds in the chicken pen where something had sat on top of the chicken wire covered top enclosure during the night and couldn’t figure out what 0:59 left it … now I know . Will keep a closer eye on our little Bantys from now on. Now that we know there are Owls in our woods
For months I've been hearing this awful screaming coming from the woods whenever I sit outside to smoke in the evening and it always scares the living daylights out of me and ruins the mood a bit let's say 😅 so it's a massive relief to learn it's just a bloody barn owl
I'm so glad I found the sound I always hear at night when I go outside. I first thought it could be a bat but this is the same exact sound I hear and after the screams comes the chirping. Relieved!
My house is surrounded by oak trees and palm trees. I always hear the babies but never heard an adult until tonight. At 4:00 am I heard the first calls followed by the second and then the loudest shriek in my back yard. It sounded like a girl screaming, so I grabbed my gun and turned the lights on and there it was staring at me. The most beautiful barn owl and then it flew away.
They also have a 'silent' sound that most people don't hear. But it's felt more than heard. It's a high vibration that enters your ears and goes down the sides of your neck and shoulders, and it freezes you into place so you can't move. I can feel/hear it, and it's spookier than these sounds. Right after they do it to you, they fly right by you and look right at you while they're flying past, and you can't move until they've passed.
We thought someone was being murdered. My wife jumped up to the window one night followed by me to see what the noise was. We saw nothing but realised it was a bird after it continually happened night after night. Found this video to confirm what the culprit was. What a beautiful bird with a frightening vocal.
I'm high af rn and I turned up my volume to max with headphones hoping to hear a soothing Who sound and I get blasted eith the most reched screech I've ever heard
Been hearing this near my house a few times, I thought it was a pueo (Hawaiian owl) but I found out that there are also these barn owls that are introduced and while they didn’t scare me, it was still a bit unsettling 😂.
One night i had a lot of heavy sorrow in my heart over a girl i liked (and later married, thank God) , i decided to go off by myself to cry and pray to God about the situation, to pour my heart out to my Jesus in private. Anyways i was walking alone on trails in a massive forested park, at around 1am, i was already very on edge and every little crackle made me spin and my heart race... my deep sorrow helped me to forget some of my fear however,..then as i was walking along trying to find a place with a view of the valley where i would pray... once again a wave of fear came upon me.... i proceeded cautiously... suddenly maybe no more than 50 feet away i hear a heart wrenching scream, it sounded like the mixture of a woman and a pig being butchered...like a banshee might sound i imagine, and it was louud.... i nearly soiled myself...
How odd, I lived for all my life where you would never see or hear a barn owl, I lived pretty on the coast, and so I have never seen one in over 40 years, or at least in the wild nor obviously heard one. Now due to many reasons I moved to Germany, things are different here by a long way, nearest beach and sea is 4 hours away for me now, lots of forests, lakes and pretty much un touched beauty to be honest where I live now, anyway I managed to get a nice delivery job and i start at around 1am, I see massive buzzards, weasals everywhere, so many beautiful animals and I even saw the other week a wolf following a huge group of deer across the street that I had to sit waiting on as they crossed which was surreal, the deers are normal but the wolf was amazing to see. Now the owls, I thought I saw an owl, then I thought I saw another and I keep seeing them but its hard to tell as its often so dark but I saw one so close yesterday it was beautiful. Then I heard this and I thought maybe it has babies or its caught a bird. I had no idea this is what they actually sound like !! I hear it all of the time whilst walking my rounds, how cool! Now I know for sure it is full of owls in certain places I walk and work, I just always thought they would make the classic, Oooo ooo noise lol yea I could have said all of that in a quarter of the time and with a 1000 less words but hey, does it really matter lol
Went on a late trail ride on my bike and was surrounded by these sounds. Never again. I’d also mention my light went out and was in nearly complete darkness. Fuck
Hey there! Could you please tell us the source of the sounds? It sounds like those from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology - is that where you found them? Handy vid
Barn Owl just swooped over my head, creeping on my cat that was chasing a cricket in the street. he came from behind me over my house and didn’t realize I was there or I don’t think he would’ve got that close :). But he definitely was thinking about at least maybe the cat might taste good :)
I had my window cracked open tonight and I heard that first screech repeatedly for probably two minutes with the second sound as well (maybe a second owl responding. I thought it was a frog or something.), and I was legitimately shaking with adrenaline trying to figure out what that was. I decided it was probably some sort of bird based on how it sounded as I listened more closely, and it makes sense bc my neighbors are farmers and have open sheds where they could roost, but that was terrifying. Never leaving my window open at night ever again. (Btw, I found this by looking up basically "bird screaming sounds", and barn owl matched perfectly)

Sometimes kinda late at night I would hear this horrible SCREECHING noise coming from their old barn. I would run inside and ask them what it was, and my grandma would always respond with "oh, that's just the owls, they like to hang out in there sometimes". But it didn't sound like an owl to me and it absolutely terrified me. I've been trying to figure out what kind of owl it was and I finally found it! Yup. All night long, too, by my bedroom window! I think the neighbors are going to crucify me if this keeps up. We're on the second clutch of baby owls this year, and maybe another month or month and a half to go before we get peace. I love them though, and do what I can to keep them safe. That includes NO WIRELESS WEBCAM. They don't need the MICROWAVE RADIATION EXPOSURE THAT HARMS THEM!
I think i figured out what ghost really are. Imagine walking at night in a forest when you hear a barn owl screaming like a banchee then it swoops right past you. And all you see is a quick white blur. You'd think its a ghost
I could never have been prepared for those 520000 decibals of noise blasted into my eardrums
