When I found this, I thought, yes! This is the perfect warmup and a cool place to start the Valentine heart journal-100 day (year?) Project. I can start here, thank you :). Seriously buried in scraps so it will help me clean up the sewing area. Aw, I love your Nana's sewing machine. I have a replica of the one I grew up with, mom gave hers away, and I was blessed to find almost the perfect match. I don't have room for it. Yet. But someday I will set it up.
Scraps are never ending aren't they? lol I love my Nana's sewing machine too. I have been doing some work with my Husqvarna (trying to learn it) and I keep reaching for things in the wrong place because I'm used to the old machine. I will keep using my old machine because I love it but it's nice using a more modern machine too. I hope you can get your machine set up soon and enjoy it. I have been considering doing the 100 Day Project this year. I skipped it the last two years. We'll see. :-)
You are very kind. :-) Thank you for the encouragement. I really appreciate it. The 100 Day Project starts February 13th this year so I have to make a decision soon. :-)
Hey Pat...you changed your name. I am glad you signed it or I would have had no idea who you were. lol Thanks so much I'm so glad you liked it. Thank you for watching and leaving a note. :-)
Hi Tracy :-) Oh...ok. I'll look for a message on Instagram once my phone is charged. It did something weird today and so I'm giving it a 'time out'. lol I can't log in to Instagram on my computer because at the moment I can't remember my password. lol I'll check when I can though. :-) I don't use Facebook right now. I quit using it a little over a year ago. I may at some point create an art page but right now I only use Instagram, RUclips and my Blog.
Oh, how super adorable these are! I love the raw edges and the scrappy look! Working with fabric and the sewing machine is one of my favorite things to do and I have to try this! Thank you for all your wonderful ideas! Hugs, Debra
Hey Debra :-) Me too!!! I'm thinking we could have a ton of fun if we had the chance. lol You are so welcome and thank you for always being so kind. :-)
Another WOW! For another fab project Laurie. As I was a patchworker and fiber crafter until I discovered art journaling ( to which I am now addicted) I have plenty of scraps to be used, so Thankyou for this inspiring video. Blessings, Trills.x
Thanks so much Trills :-) Oh my...I am sure you have plenty of fabric around you. I keep saying I am going to do a little bit of quilting. I would like to make some small pieces. So little time though to do it all. lol Thanks so much for watching and taking time to leave a note. I appreciate it. :-)
Hey Laurie. I just came over from your paper scraps journal video. This is SUPER fun. I am a quilter so you know I have clear shoe boxes filled, by color way, with fabric scraps. I also have tons of those paper pads that I need to use up. So now I have these cute little journals to make as well as the scrap paper journal to make using up all my papers. Can't wait to get started. I have been using a composition book to write down fun, serious, uplifting, whatever quotes and I think this journal will be a good place to put those from now on. Thanks again for the great ideas. ~~rita
Hi Rita :-) Ohhhh boy, I bet you DO have a ton of scraps since you quilt. I hope you give these a try. They are a lot of fun and really easy. You can do so much more with them if you want to take more time with them too. You are so welcome. I would love to see yours if you make one. :-) Thanks so much for watching and for your kind comments. :-)
Thank you Irene. And, you are so welcome. I am sorry you no longer have your mom....I understand how that feels. Thank you for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. :-)
LOVE these books!! I love torn fabric, and using all sorts of mismatched fabrics was freaking me out to start with, but the final result is AWESOME! They remind me of the crazy quilts my grandmother used to make, where she would take odd shaped pieces of fabric and put them all together in a quilt. Thanks for taking the time to make and edit videos!!
Oh goodness, these are so cute!!! Well, you are my go-to for using up my stuff, making something handy and beautiful and making new friends =) My mother was a couture seamstress (not kidding) so I grew up with this idea that everything has to be "just so" and working with your ideas has helped pull me out of that box. As I was making those neat little paper bag envelopes and using my hot-smokin' sewing machine to stitch fancy stitches on a paper bag!, I had to laugh and let my mom know that, we definitely are not in Kansas anymore. LOL She is probably laughing and cringing, all at the same time xo
Hi Linda. :-) Wow....really? I bet she was awesome at it. Yes, I know that feeling of feeling like things had to be "perfect". And nope...not in Kansas anymore. lol I was just saying in the video that went up today that my mom and her mom and her mom's mom would be shocked by mixed media. lol Thanks so much for watching and taking time to comment. I enjoyed it. :-)
These are lovely. I have been keeping some of my mom's clothes and wanting to make a quilt. I am going to clip some bits off to make a journal. Even thinking of asking my cousin to send me bits of my aunts stash that she has kept and make a journal for her. Thanks Laurie!
Hey Lynne. Some of your mom's clothing bits would make a sweet little journal. I have a few items of my mom's clothing too. There is a shirt in particular that she decorated up that I am very tempted to make into a large journal cover but i just haven't been able to bring myself to cut it yet. If you do make some journals I hope you share them with me. I would love to see them and maybe it will help encourage me to cut that shirt of my moms. :-) Thanks so much for watching and leaving a note. :-)
So pretty Laurie !! Apart all my quilting fabrics I have about 50 old mens ties that I have been wanting to use , This is a great project to use them up ,big hug my friend !!
Hi Kat :-) Thank you. I'm glad you like them. I hope you try making one. It's nice to feel free and not have to follow some rule to create. I fight against the urge to be "just so". It's in my nature to feel like nothing is ever good enough so mixed media has been really good for me. Thanks so much for your sweet comment and thank you for watching. :-)
I thought it was ironic when I started watching your video and you started talking about your vintage sewing machine. Besides doing junk journals my biggest love is vintage sewing machines. What you have is one of the old singer slant o matic's. they were a very popular line of machines . I can recognize it by its color which was unique to the slant o matics. Yours is nice because it has the extended bed on it . it's probably either a 301 or 401 you should see the number on the front of the machine. These were made mid 1950s usually around about 1958 or so. in my opinion these are the best machines on the market. this is an all-metal machine and it's gear-driven which means it can go on indefinitely. You were absolutely right this machine will probably outlive you LOL. Great video.
A kindred spirit. :-) Thank you for your comment and for watching. :-) I don't have to look at the model number. lol I know it by heart. It's a 301A. Slant and all metal just like you said. I know that machine inside and out. I could take it apart to clean it and put it back together when I was a kid. It's an AWESOME machine. I found another one just like it at an antique mall years ago for $35 and bought it in case I ever needed anything off of it or just wanted to use it but this machine is so good I'll never need any parts from it. I also have two featherweight machines one from each grandmother. Awesome for quilting if I ever get into that but so far haven't gotten that far other than small wall hangings and very primitive at that. It's so nice to meet someone that shares my love of this machine. It's like it's part of me and it's the one thing I would grab from my art room if I had to take one thing. Oh, the extended arm was added on after my grandmother bought it. I'm so glad she added it. I have two old treadle machines and several other machines that were my mom's including her Husqvarna. The one sitting next to my Singer 301 is a Husqvarna my husband bought me quite a few years ago that does everything and has the embroidery set as well. I feel so bad I haven't used it. I'm so attached to my old Singer that is what I use every time. I think the Husqvarna intimidates me too because there is so much to it. I'm afraid I'll ruin it while learning how to use it. And I don't want to be a traitor either. lol I'm going to pass down some of mom's machines one day or sell them if no one wants them because I can't use all of them but it's hard to part with any of them. I think this is the longest comment I have ever left. lol Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a great evening. :-)
Hi Laurie, thank you ever so much for this fab tutorial! It's just what I needed to make me get my sewing machine out again! I'm not confident with sewing but I have managed to make a little notebook and am very pleased with it. I watched a few of your videos late the other night ...was too tired to comment but wanted you to know that you are a great inspiration! Thanks for sharing. Big hugs,Dee xox
Hi Dee :-) You are so welcome. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and were inspired to make one. And it turned out so gorgeous. Thank you for watching. I appreciate it. :-)
OMG sweet Laurie !!! these journals are gorgeous wow wow i'm totally in love with them 💖 💖 now i'm impatient to have my new sewing machine to make few of them and use my fabric scraps... thank you so much for this great and inspirational tutorial my friend 💖 hugs
Hi Sylvia :-) Thank you so much. I am so glad you like them. Oh boy...a new sewing machine? Awesome!!! I hope you do make some. They are so fun and easy. Thanks so much for watching and being so sweet. :-)
I love it and plan on making one that's my plan for the year is making Small medium and large ones that is my plan for the year alone with other things that pop up thank you for your inspiration and time!
lol I hear you Rosanne. Scraps is one thing I never seem to run out of that is for sure. :-) Thanks so much for stopping by. It was nice to see you. :-)
lol, too big for the ribbon - then it's just tooooo big lol - LOVE it. That is correct about the scissors, mine are hidden in a draw & only I know where. great little word journals xo
Hey Shemi :-) Thank you so much. I am so glad you like it. Awesome, I'm glad you want to make one too. It's fun and easy. Can't wait to see it. :-) Thanks for watching and as always being so kind. :-)
That is awesome Marci :-) If you know how to send a photo you could email me a photo. My email is on the "About" page on youtube. Just click the "For Business Inquires". I would love to see what you made. :-) Thanks so much for watching and I'm glad you made one. :-)
I like making tags. Sometimes I give them away in giveaways or happy mail. Sometimes I put them on birthday gifts or Christmas presents. I like to keep them in a vintage sewing draw in my art room just to look at. I put them in junk journals. They are good for trading with other art friends because they are small, easy and fast to make. They can be bookmarks if they aren’t too bulky. Tags are also a way to create small and play with techniques and learn what you like and don’t like. Whatever you can think of you can do. :-)
Thankyou Laurie.....we don’t use tags here in the UK. I am presently attempting to make a doll for my Niece after watching your video. Then I shall have ago at a small book . Thankyou
Laurie, do the dies cut the fabric as it is or do you need to back it with an interfacing? The journals are really cute and I love the idea of making fabric flowers. I know you published this video 2 years ago but I am binging so expect more questions on some of your older videos. 😉 I am totally enjoying them.
Hey Linda. I have never interfaced the fabric to die cut it. Sometimes I cut several layers of fabric at a time and have had no problems. I'm glad you are enjoying them. Thank you. :-)
Hey Linda. I'm leaving a comment here because I can't leave one on the video I'm talking about. I replied to your comment on the video today about receipts and pinned your comment. After thinking on it more I decided to delete that video. Thank you for the info. :-)
@@BlackbearyForest I didn't want to upset anyone but last year there was a lot of,talk about this technique and the possible problems that might occur. I did some checking into it online and for me, decided to be be more safe than sorry and not try it out even though the effects are beautiful. Now when I get receipts I handle them as little as possible and keep them only as long as necessary.
Not a problem Linda. I understand and now that I am aware will not be doing more of them. I didn’t want to leave it up on my channel. Others can decide for themselves but will see it elsewhere. I appreciate your telling me. 😊
Laurie I am so not experienced in working with fabric but I bought two pieces of Indian fabric (thats the only way I can explain it), its shiny. I want to use this fabric as covers for journals with boho tape, do you think it will be wise to use it, will it not hook and eventually look ugly? I want to do the same for covering one side of my scatter cushions? Thank you......blessings, Marci
Hi Marci. :-) I usually work with cotton fabric so I am not sure what the fabric you have would do on your projects. I do know that if it were me and I wanted to try the fabric on my project I would just go for it. If at a later time the fabric doesn't look good anymore you can always remove it or cover it up with more fabric or just add scraps of fabric to it as it needs it and that might turn into a cool looking journal. If the fabric you are unsure about is important to you then maybe don't risk it. If not, then go for it and see what you come up with. The worst that could happen is you don't like it and you can start over or add to it and change the look until you love it. I'm sure whatever you decide and come up with will be fun. :-)
Hi Samarita :-) Yes, you can use tacky glue but I would use a really good one like Aleene's. Just be sure whatever glue you use indicates it can be used on fabric. There is a really good glue called "Fabri Tac" made by Beacon that works great with fabric too. :-)
Hey Vickie :-) Thanks so much. Hey....did you ask me about the citrus drink in a comment a week ago or so? I thought I saw it but when I came back to answer comments it was gone. I am not sure it was you so I thought I would ask. Thanks for watching. :-)
I wonder where your comment went. I have looked and looked but it's gone. :-( It's super easy. I make a double batch so what I tell you can be cut in half to make less. 2 Red Grapefruits - Peeled. Leave the pith it's good for you. Leave the seeds unless you just want to remove them. I leave them. 2 Navel Oranges - Peeled. Leave the pitch. Leave the seeds. 2 Medium Ripe Bananas. 3 if they are small. Peeled. 8 Medium Strawberries. Or as many as you like. Cayenne Pepper to taste. We use quite a bit. We use 500 mg capsules we have and I break them open and empty it into the mix. Some water. Depends on how thick you want it. I use about 1 cup. Blend it in a mixer. I use a Vita Mix. Drink up. :-) I usually put the water in the blender first and mix in the cayenne pepper so it doesn't stick on the bottom. Then I add all the fruit and blend really good. Sooooooo, yummy. :-)
Laurie, that strange my comment was gone. I just thought you got busy. Where do I get the cayenne pepper at? All I know about cayenne pepper is the season one. Thank you.
No, I just can't find it. lol You can use the seasoning. That is what everyone I have seen that makes it does. We just happened to have it in capsule form because we take vitamins that are natural spices and seasonings because they are good for so many things. Someone told me the other day in a comment that cayenne pepper is good for helping pain. Anyway, use your seasoning. We just used what we had. If you want the capsules, you can get them from any vitamin store like GNC but we order ours from Vitacost. We like that a capsule is a set amount so we use the same amount every time. Being a 500 mg capsule is plenty for the double mixture too and you can taste it and it's on the spicy side but I love it. You are so welcome. :-)

Hi Katherine. Oh this machine is my baby...I love it. It's an old Singer 301A my grandmother gave me. They last forever. :-)
Wonder if we could also make this with a stretchy cord and make them refillable? Like the TN folders?
Sure, I don't see why not. :-)
you should have incorporated buttons and pieces of zipper for one book honoring your mom and apparel :) just a thought
Yes, one day I will do that. I think I would want it on a bigger journal because my mom always went large. lol Thanks so much for watching. :-)
Laurie these are so beautiful I love your projects this is so fun I have to make one hugs Shemi
Hey Shemi :-) Thank you so much. I am so glad you like it. Awesome, I'm glad you want to make one too. It's fun and easy. Can't wait to see it. :-) Thanks for watching and as always being so kind. :-)
Laurie I made a journal following your tutorial! Fun, I am happy and I would love to know what you think!🥀
That is awesome Marci :-) If you know how to send a photo you could email me a photo. My email is on the "About" page on youtube. Just click the "For Business Inquires". I would love to see what you made. :-) Thanks so much for watching and I'm glad you made one. :-)

Thank you Cathi :-) I'm glad you like it. Thank you for watching. :-)

lol Easy and fun is my favorite way. :-)
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing.💖
Thank you Laura :-)
Laura Orta I
Really lovely thankyou sooo much so clever. What are the tags for??
I like making tags. Sometimes I give them away in giveaways or happy mail. Sometimes I put them on birthday gifts or Christmas presents. I like to keep them in a vintage sewing draw in my art room just to look at. I put them in junk journals. They are good for trading with other art friends because they are small, easy and fast to make. They can be bookmarks if they aren’t too bulky. Tags are also a way to create small and play with techniques and learn what you like and don’t like. Whatever you can think of you can do. :-)
Thank you. :-)
Thankyou Laurie.....we don’t use tags here in the UK. I am presently attempting to make a doll for my Niece after watching your video. Then I shall have ago at a small book . Thankyou
I hope you enjoy making your book. :-) Thanks for watching. :-)
I love this, but I don't sew. Can I use tacky glue instead? Or is there a special glue I should use?
Hi Samarita :-) Yes, you can use tacky glue but I would use a really good one like Aleene's. Just be sure whatever glue you use indicates it can be used on fabric. There is a really good glue called "Fabri Tac" made by Beacon that works great with fabric too. :-)
Oh....and I forgot to say thank you! :-)
Super cute! Tfs. 😊
Hey Vickie :-) Thanks so much. Hey....did you ask me about the citrus drink in a comment a week ago or so? I thought I saw it but when I came back to answer comments it was gone. I am not sure it was you so I thought I would ask. Thanks for watching. :-)
Yes! I would love to know how make it. Thank you!
Drink up. :-)
I usually put the water in the blender first and mix in the cayenne pepper so it doesn't stick on the bottom. Then I add all the fruit and blend really good.
Sooooooo, yummy. :-)
Laurie, that strange my comment was gone. I just thought you got busy. Where do I get the cayenne pepper at? All I know about cayenne pepper is the season one. Thank you.
No, I just can't find it. lol
You can use the seasoning. :-)
does this fit that mini one page book you made couple yrs back video?
Hey Patrice :-) No, this fabric journal is larger than the one page journal I made. :-)
I won't be throwing away my tiny scraps anymore! :)
Cool Denise...they made great little projects. :-) Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it. :-)
Thank you.
You are very welcome Amber :-) Thank you for watching. :-)
LOVE
Thank you Cali :-) :-)
