Okay just wanted to chime in and say Ive loved Yukari since i played FES for the first time in 2021. She felt like a real character who experiences real emotions and tbh The Answer made me love her even more. Never understood the hate and im so happy to hear a lot of people loving her now and seeing videos like yours back then appreciating her were important to me
Yeah, Yukari is probably up there as one of my favorite JRPG party members tbh. The writers were not afraid to give her flaws and make her not always be the most likeable, which makes sense given that she is a teenager and her backstory. But more importantly, Yukari(and Junpei) both learn and grow from their mistakes and are different people by the end of the Journey/Asnwer. Yukari and Junpei are easily some of the best written Persona characters of all time for their depth and character development.
I think one character that’s due for a fandom redemption is Ken. Other than Yukari he’s the P3 party member that I’ve seen the most hate for. Reload was my first time playing P3 and I was constantly impressed at how much I liked Ken. It helps that his voice acting is so much better in Reload than in the original.
@@Cantfeelthepain Yeah that's fair it does feel like more of a Persona problem where when their arc in the story it doesn't get much mention afterwards
Persona fans finally passed grade 3 english but it took them way too long. Now Atlus kinda dumbed her character down of it's essence and now people liking her from here on feels artificial to me, it's like a we won but at what cost. People can't handle characters who aren't afraid to be mean and show genuine human flaws that aren't the pretty ones like Akechi or even Rise. This is a common problem of media I find where people hate on the realistically portrayed characters extremely easily. This happened to Obito from Naruto, Nadeko from Monogatari, Subaru from Re;Zero, and Yukari obviously just to name a few examples. It really sucks that she got nerfed like this but this is how people generally percieve theae characters that I personally appreciate I guess.
Yeah, its a shame, especially in Persona where the party members will be teenagers lmao. Teenagers are not always going to be likeable or mature, its part of growing up.
I couldn’t agree more. It feels like a monkey’s paw. “I wish Yukari was liked more in the Persona community. She is such a great character. While she is initially rude and distant, she is a very interesting and complex character that grows a lot during the story.” *monkey’s paw finger curls* “Wow, Reload changed her tone so much in the dub to the point that she comes across as a bland and generic anime girl now. Also they really neutered a lot of her biggest moments in The Answer. She doesn’t even feel like Yukari anymore.”
I mean a lot of these people probably had P4 or P5 as their first Persona game, games where everyone sucks up to the protag, they can't handle more realistic depictions of human relations
They got rid of Yukari fighting for the key scene which makes it a more stronger emotional moment as a last ditch effort, only for it to be a useless cause and ended her finally breaking down. The new one just...sucks. They made her more "selfish" as in "I want him back so *I* can feel better." The weird timing for her to collapse out of nowhere with the song immediately play just felt tacky. The old one says it in a manner of "selfish love" where she will do anything to get Makoto back even through a lost cause since her actions says it all, and her collapsing after realizing with the slight pause with the music just hits the feels much harder.
@@pokemonduckP5S was my first Persona game(I have to clarify that I already had the general idea of what happens in Persona 1 to 5 before that.) Anyways, I didnt act like that. In fact, Yukari is one of my favorite P3 characters! Also, I was already a Danganronpa fan back then, and one of my favorite characters was Sayaka, who I find to be an interesting character. I dont know if it's still happening, but I didnt personally liked the general reception of that character(about 4 to 5 years ago) At least on RUclips comment sections
i hoped junpei's character would get some more recognition, as his growth from immaturity is something i think was one of the most well handled aspects of P3.
@@connorharnage6697 Yeah. It's so annoying how the fandom thinks the bitchy Yukari in the original was the more "authentic" Yukari, when it's the opposite. 2006 Yukari was very rude, while 2024 Reload Yukari was more authentic and accurate to how she was supposed to be.
@@davidtimmer596 I know this for a fact however I personally think the liberties they took with the original localization created a much more interesting image of Yukari that I rarely get to see explored in media that's not just a straight up villain. My favorite characters in media are typically the ones people don't get but they have writing that says a bit more than the standard and I really appreciated that. I don't really have any issues with base Reload Yukari because her qualities stayed in tact. My issues lie specifically in Episode Aigis' version of Yukari where even the Japanese version adds lines of dialogue, removed an impactful punch to a scene entirely, and added a bunch of caveats to what she's saying even though her whole arc in Episode Aigis is about her pain... in a story about pain. It's not supposed to be easily digestible, people do in fact act the way she did in the original with most of my family members in the past being my prime example. So in that regard I feel they over corrected her character in an attempt to appease people who wouldn't even try to understand her or her grief in the first place.
Realistic does not equal enjoyable and I dare say her realism is what made most people dislike her, she is confrontative and often annoying due to her confrontative nature you can’t blame people for being put off by this if they didn’t like her already her personality will only make their dislike of her more potent. She’s a real life teenager and thus borderline insufferable she’s annoying and combative which adds to her depth as a person but also her annoyance. Also I feel that persona 3’s more grounded and less in-your-face character design only adds to the problem.
I'll be honest i want an Ohya comeback, not because i like her character in particular but because i think that her confidant is one the few Confidants that actually has a legit social commentary instead of forcing the narrative to make their characters into underdogs, who is kinda my problem with P5.
Yukari is persona girlypop, She has legacy to the protagonist. She also has a lot legacy to the series, and what it represents. Her very own persona isis, will do anything for her love. It only makes sense with her character and design to animate these qualities. Legacy of lovers!! lol
I think most of the femc hate comes from people who just got annoyed with how people were using her as an excuse to bash reload when in reality she isn't a neccecary part of the persona 3 mythos, just nice additional content that adds more to the game.
FeMC has an extremely loud minority of fans that are absolutely unhinged. Just ignore them. Kotone herself is great. Although she isn't strictly necessary, she does provide an interesting new angle to view P3 from.
@@GegBhdIt goes both ways. I’ve seen a good portion of male mc fans be just as toxic and unhinged. They use every oppurtunity to gatekeep while calling the femc a pedo and unneccessary part of the game. Without the bias for either one, its not hard to see that they are both two sides to the same coin. It justs sucks to always see that part of the fandom beefing.
Yup and despite what some people will say, she still has the flaws we love her for. She's just not as annoying about it (if I remember right the "bitchiness" people dog pile on Yukari about from the original game was a choice by the VA at the time and not how she was intended to be)
Opinions change as people grow up. It's a fact. There's a relatively new TV Trope called "Character Perception Evolution" and I find it fascinating, frequently looking at it to see write-ups on reevaluated characters. Don't have much to add on Yukari, but regarding the FeMC hate, I feel it's less about her and more about how some of her fans write off anything as trash if it doesn't include her, similar to obnoxious Geno fans in the Smash Bros community. Though I did see a lot of accusations of her "not fitting P3's tone" back in the day, and there's been some new video essays shifting the narrative to "she just copes with depression differently". So that's nice.
@@BigKlingy really, The Kotone accusations really make no sense. I think she’s a bit overrated in the community, but many of the jokes behind her (cough cough Ken) are not funny at all. Though, again, I do think Kotone’s overrated and, as much as I would have liked her (and other Portable inclusions) to be in Reload, it’s not the end of the world. Also, I also think the more accurate term with Yukari’s story is “vindicated by history.”
I feel like kotone is a case that was fun little experiment, but fans really loved it. Speaking of kotone and yuraki. One thing I like about portable femc is that yuraki becomes the best friend type for femc.
Yukari was quite literally my favorite character from Persona 3R. After completing the entire game, I honestly don't see any reasons to hate her. In fact, in my opinion, I think she has one of the best character arcs in the game. The game even left me wanting more interactions with Yukari, and I was sad seeing how the game ended, as I wouldn't be able to talk to her anymore. The only character that comes close to Yukari for me is either Mitsuru or Akihiko.
I played P3P in 2019 and Yukari was my favorite character almost immediately, finding out lots of people hated her was really surprising, so it's good that the general opinion has shifted.
I first got into the series when reload came out. Yukari was always my fav character and I was surprised when I saw bubble teas video that she was hated.
I like her Confidant a lot, and it also ties into the Shido stuff in a way no other one does. It's just her romance option that sours fan perception imo.
I am not it specifically but i am a gourmet king enjoyer, ive only ever played P3R and not the other versions. I enjoy his cartoonish voice and "erm actually" passion towards food, as well as him learning to stop doing things to be better than his brother and to simply enjoy what he likes and not be ashamed of how others think of him. I also like how he finally realized how tasty the ramen was when he stopped rushing through it, like a innuendo on life. (He got me with the moon walk)
My opinion has always been that I think Yukari is a very well written character, but I wouldn't like her or hang out with her in real life. which is fine. You don't have to personally vibe with someone to make them a good character.
I wouldn't mind hanging out with Yukari at all because I believe if she didn't grow up with such tragic events happening in her life she would really be no different than Ann and Ann is really upbeat and uplifting.
@@ShadowOfMassDestruction oh yeah I love Ann. I'd be besties with Ann. As she is, Yukari is pretty irritable and quick to anger which is fine when it's directed at Junpei, but I'm sensitive and she can be pretty brutal.
@@nathanielmarshmallow6012 The things Yukari gets angry over are all pretty reasonable plus she's quick to apologize and make amends. We can't really sit here and act like the stuff Junpei does isn't aggravating, he is quite literally a pervy clown who set himself up from the very beginning for Yukari's slander. She's really no different to an ordinary girl she just has supernatural trauma issues.
@@ShadowOfMassDestruction Oh yeah when he's being a perv it's totally justified. She also just gets on his case a lot when he's just being stupid or minding his own business though like with the Junpei ace detective thing. In that instance he was just being goofy and stupid, not pervy and I like to be able to joke around with my friends without being scoffed at. Like I said, I think Yukari is a great character and I love the arc she goes through in the story, I just don't have anything in common with her and probably wouldn't talk to her in real life.
@@nathanielmarshmallow6012 Yukari and Junpei's relationship ranges from typical highschool shenanigans to Vicky/Timmy Turner lol. Admittedly though, as much as I love Yukari's writing I also don't think I could casually hang out with her either. There's a reason why Chie is my #1 because she's my personal goofball vibe.
I only got into Persona when it came out for all platforms in 2022(?), so I’m a very recent fan. I came to love Yukari immediately. She felt so realistic, so flawed, like a person who could actually exist. (an unfortunately important note: I’m a woman.) Her antagonistic behaviour towards Mitsuru was a perfect and necessary addition to the storyline, because if you’re being realistic, she’s right. They are all putting their lives(!) on the line whilst not even being provided with all the information on why and what they are fighting for - and the reason they don’t know is because Mitsuru chose not to tell them even though she could at any point. I was so upset to find out they changed the infamous SL reversal choice in P3P, because it just shows how emotionally unintelligent (male) Persona fans are. The girl almost got assaulted, of course touching her is a terrible decision in that situation. Read the room. I also appreciated the push-back against letting Ken join. I wish the game allowed me to speak out against it, too. That’s an elementary school child. I’m not letting him risk his life when he can’t even get a shot at the doctor’s without his parents (yes, I know I know) permission. (I literally did not use him on my team once during my first play through for moral reasons.) I never got to play The Answer myself, but luckily RUclips exists. I thought she actions there were so perfect for her character. She wasn’t right from a rational standpoint, but her actions made sense emotionally and it resonated with me. Her (and Ryoji, but that’s irrelevant to my following opinion) being my favourite character made me doubtful of Reload pretty early on. I didn’t like the new vocal direction. The old VA’s bratty intonation was perfect for her personality, no matter whether it’s authentic to the Japanese voice. Then I saw how silly the cutscene direction looked at times. (I’m sorry, but Thanatos tearing apart Orpheus used to look intimidating, now it looks like a balloon is being overfilled and popping.) And now The Answer came out and they watered her character down to the point of almost being unrecognisable, because people can’t stand female characters being three dimensional and acting like human beings (breaking news, humans aren’t particularly rational beings).
I am a simp Simp stands for Standing here, I realize you were just like me trying to make history But who's to judge the right from wrong? When our guard is down, I think we'll both agree That violence breeds violence But in the end it has to be this way I've carved my own path You followed your wrath But maybe we're both the same The world has turned, and so many have burned But nobody is to blame Yet, staring across this barren, wasted land I feel new life will be born beneath the blood-stained sand Beneath the blood-stained sand
I think as video games as a hobby expand in popularity, and more well adjusted people who've actually touched grass play games we realize Yukari is a realistic character and how a normal person acts in real life.
Back then, Yukari's arc was the most topnotch for me when I played the answer. It really made her feel more "real" as a fictional character (if basing it entirely on the english translation of the dialogues) While I truly enjoyed the changes in the Aigis DLC for reload, some fine nuances from the past version was indeed lost. Though that being said, the mini conversations with SEES members especially Junpei's stance as well before and after the fight for the true key was done magnificently!
@@TheJaredPunch im currently replaying the answer reload version again, so far im starting to believe that the reload version is a much better overall rework over the vanilla answer, there is so much to unearth from the conversation from before and after colosseum battles
The near fifty percent of "women" play Persona games statistic followed by using J. K. Rowling as an example of a woman "people rightfully dogpile on" was actually so funny.
back in the day they used to hate her. i remember being in this (seemingly) small contingent of fans that loved her and thought she was realistic haha.
People hated her mainly because of the epilogue. In the base game she was fine to most people. I personally never hated her because the way she acted is just that of a realistically flawed character. They dumbed her emotions down a lot in the new epilogue to make her “Less unlikeable”
I'm in the camp of people who are a little disappointed in the direction yukaris character was taken in in reload/episode aigis. Part the appeal of yukari is how human she is, she's imperfect and often rude. She doesn't handle her grief in the best way, can we blame her? Can we blame ourselves?
I remember being so shocked when I found out she was hated 😭 I've been loosely into Persona for 14 years, but never interacted much with the fandom and only ever played P4, PQ and P5R until this year, but back in the PQ Days, Yukari was instantly my fav member of the P3 gang! She was the only non-P4 member I always had in my party 🤭 When I played P3P this year, she took a bit of a step back (hello, I am a female fan who also adores FemC, also Akihiko just stepped into the door and was like: Behold, I am your fav PQ Party member now), but not because the game made me like her less, but because I just learned to love the rest of the cast when they were more than punchlines (Also the Japanese voice actors did a lot to improve everyone's standing). I haven't played The Answer out of Episode Aegis, but I did watch some of the videos comparing original and Reload and I still didn't think her behaviour in that story made her any less likeable because it was pretty on brand with some of the stuff in her social link - I don't remember which rank it was, but there's one where she snaps at FemC for pushing her out of the way to save her from an oncoming car and getting hurt in the progress, which I thought was pretty on brand with her demeanor in The Answer (I wanna say it's somewhere around 5 or 6, but I might misremember it). Also, for the record, I love Junpei and I don't think she's mistreating him. It's rough, albeit friendly banter, which Junpei actually confirms himself in the Drama CDs. In the P3P Summer Festival CD (the FemC one) he gets asked why he constantly engages in that kind of banter and he says he does it so there is no awkwardness between them (been a while since I listened to it, but I think he specifically hints towards the fact that males and females tend to not hang out as friends as much - in Japanese society at least -, so he wants to make the girls more comfortable with him by making them laugh. It's super sweet). Anyway, I am SO glad she's getting less hate nowadays, she really didn't deserve that much crap in the first place and I'm glad people seem to finally realize that. As for FemC taking her place as being the next one to get tons of fandom hate... I unfortunately kinda see that considering how much hate I've already seen towards her and it's so far all been people quote rting or replying to any positive comments or fanart of the character talking bs about her just because Ken is a romance option. Those people usually act as if that was somehow her only unique characteristic and also as if her having feelings for him was a thing outside of that very specific ONE version of his social link, which... spoiler alert... it's not. Never. 🤦♀️ Sorry for the little side tangent, I actually had someone come in and try to argue with me about that and it was the most annoying thing I've experienced in this fandom so far.
Sorry for the wall of text, I have a habit of writing short comments. Also I think it says edited because I accidentally clicked on something else while typing or something 🤨
I've always liked yukari since day 1. Since first playing p3fes all those years ago. She's always been my number 1 persona waifu. And I never understood the hate. Why would you hate the most realistically written woman in the entire series? We've never had another character like her. And we probably never will again.
I think the biggest display of how people have changed their views on how characters like Yukari are treated by fans is (OMORI SPOILERS) Aubrey from Omori (a game that released in 2020) has almost the exact same character arc Yukari in the Answer does (the circumstances ARE quite different but it's a similar idea), but Aubrey is overwhelmingly popular among fans of Omori (from my understanding anyway), which... kinda makes Yukari's Reload!Answer situation kind of sad. By the time people finally turned around on her, it was too late.
We didn't really HAVE games like Omori that delved into mental health back in the 2000's. Persona was kinda the closest we had. Greater awareness of mental health and willingness to tackle it in more media helped Yukari and Ken's reputation imo.
@@BigKlingy It's kinda wild to think about games like Omori and Celeste that have those kinds of mental health commentaries are commonplace compared to just like 10 or 20 years ago now that you mention it. Which makes it kinda cool that they managed to hit the sweetspot with Yukari in the 2000s, even if people didn't fully get it back then.
Probably one of the reasons people hated Yukari so much in the original Episode Aigis is the way she treated Aigis in that expansion. It's no surprise that Aigis is the second most popular character in the series only beaten by Joker, so every person who mistreats our favorite toaster is enemy #1. even if it is understandable that she reacts that way
Same for Mitsuru. They also stack more hate on Yukari for getting on Mitsuru's case for obvious reasons that she states repeatedly but I guess people don't care about that because "Omg Mommy! Woof🐶 Woof Bark 🐶Bark🐶"
@@ShadowOfMassDestruction I don't think people really care about that because Yukari x Mitsuru is probably the most popular ship in the series that isn't about any of the protagonists especially after 4 arena ultimax. Side note: Kanji x Naoto is technically more popular but that's not really a fan ship anymore
Personally, I think people mainly didn’t like Yukari because the way she treated Junpei (who ends up becoming most peoples favorite character/bro) And the answer. Which is why I appreciate reloaded, making her a lot softer, understandable, and nicer overall
Funny enough, Yukari was probs my fave female friend in the game while I hated junpei for the longest time. Came around to finally appreciating him but it def took some time. The classclown/bro approach was just not for me and Yukari seemed a lot more realistic with how flawed yet understandable she was.
Finally, all the dumbasses who used to hate her actually grew up and learned to put themselves in another’s shoes. She did not deserve the hate she got and I’m so glad to see public opinion change.
ever since i first played fes circa 2010, my favorite character in the whole series has been yukari, it has persisted to this day. participated in a loooooot of arguments about her character on gamefaqs and /v/ over the years. warms my heart to see people finally coming around on her. probably wouldnt surprise you that i much prefer the vocal delivery of FES and ai ebihara is in my top 2 best girls in p4
1:31 Kotone getting second goes to show how hard atlus fumbled with not adding Kotone to the game. I get that it's a good amount of new stuff to add but the love for Kotone shows that it would have been time and money well spent for them. Plus to new fans just the tagline of new persona game with male or female mc can get a lot of people interested. I mean come on fans are making a whole damn p3r mod to add Kotone in, change the dialogue to fit her and use her pronouns, and add a bunch of remixed reload style versions of her songs, and probably more down the line! I know this video isn't about her at all I just wanted the mention she ranked second and I started rambling lmao! Justice for Kotone 💖
"Maybe there's that one Gourmet King enjoyer- That person. That would also be me. I came into Persona 3 Reload being told Nozomi was the absolute worst SL in the game, I reached the other side tearing up. And I'll explain why: While I didn't have weight nor self-image issues, his inferiority complex towards his brother hit me like a f'cking truck. For a good chunck of my life, I didn't feel needed by anyone while my sister was always favored by everyone around us, to the point I thought me being gone altogether would be better... painfully close to how Nozomi felt about himself. Fortunately, that stopped being the case long ago and me and my sister have grown closer which each passing year (we're not twins btw). I also feel sorry for how the fandom responds to Nozomi's awful situation of having being scammed by a cult when he was at his most vulnerable state, *that made him idealize his own death btw* and made him unknowingly do the same to others... by completely disregarding it as "an awful scammer with an even worse attitude" (even treating him as if HE was the actual head of the cult) when P3 has an actual full-time scammer visiting that same mall at night aka Devil Arcana Tanaka. An how everyone sided with the dad (while having very good reasons to be pissed), *not wanting to admit how messed up it is that he was fully committed to have a minor assaulted despite knowing Nozomi was a victim of that same cult...* instead of solving the issue like an actual adult would aka *talk directly to Nozomi's parents* rubbed me the wrong way. This also includes how the fandom seems to not be able to see that breaking Nozomi out of brainwashing and making him better himself, for himself, by himself was the point of his arc? It was never about bringing down the cult itself like in Persona 5 (which Chihaya doesn't even fully accomplish either), and the dad wanted nothing to do with Nozomi after that anyways. *Hell, breaking out people from their own "illusions" is the whole point of the Moon Arcana SLs.* I know I'm in a very small minority here, but I don't care. Nozomi was a pleasant surprise for me.
Since I started playing P3P back in June, I’ve honestly grown to really love Yukari as a character… so when I found out she was hated until recently, I got so confused 😭
honestly yukari is the persona character that feels the most like they could be an actual person, i have no clue what gives me those vibes i just have them
I haven’t played fes yet. Mostly because I don’t want to pay a bunch of money for a ps2 game. But I have seen a bunch of comparisons between the new and old yukari, and yeah I wish she was a bit more prickly like in the older version. I thought she was kinda meh in the base reload. But episode aigis made me warm up to her more honestly. Her portrayal is how it feels to lose someone, and it really hit home for me. Voice actress killed it. She went from low b tier to high a tier for me
8:11 i can only hope and pray that Morgana gets more love someday. He's one of my top 3 favorite P5 characters and it hurts me that so many people misunderstand and hate on him when he's a really good character IMO. I see myself a lot in him as well so yeah 🥲 Edit: another opinion i have is that the yukari vs Junpei thing is so oberblown. They act like siblings, and Junpei purposely tries to get a reaction out of her. The one time she takes it too far, he's able to call her out for that. Its very obvious they both care for each other as well.
For as much as people hate Morgana for forcing the player to go to sleep at times, I felt that Yu did that to me just as much. So I really didn't get all the hate.
I got into P3 a year(?) before Royal was announced, and my first two games were the PS2 Persona games (since a Vita emulator wasn't popularised). Back then, Yukari was sooo overhated, which makes me glad that people adore her as much as I do these days.
Nah, the one who should be hated is Mitsuru. She straight up allowed a vulnerable 12 year old, a literal child who's orphaning was caused by one of her friends, to join SEES with little to no pushback. Ikutsuki may have brought Ken and suggested him, but he wasn't the leading body with the most authority. Mitsuru's dad still had ultimate power over the operations, while Mitsuru was still the main leader of SEES. The fact she helped cover up Ken's mom dying because of Shinjiro without giving Ken a home until Ikutsuki brings him to her makes things all the worse. How does someone not remember the one major casualty of SEES? And how did she not realise the kid may want revenge against his mother's murderer if he sought her out, especially when there was no explanation between both parties and she let the accidental murderer and the victim's son work together with no eyes on both of them.
@@Oath13K it’s more prominent in persona fandom from what Ive seen. Like, they dont care much for the writing of a character, if they look fuckable then that character is gonna be popular despite being plain af. That’s the shallowness Ive seen on most persona fans
Honestly I think the reason reload made some changes that are now unpopular is because they would have been the popular choice when it was in development, like people hated stuff like forced tactics a few years back and it didn't really get appreciated until too late for reload, they already made the decision to let it go to the side. I think the same thing can apply to them softening Yukari in the answer DLC, although they didn't really do that in the base game so idk why they chose to with the answer.
I remember some people really shifting their opinion on Yukari back with P3 Portable let you play as Kotone. The story shifted the perspective of actually kind of being a young girl in regards to character friendships, and pushed some people to feel a stronger sense of camaraderie with her as a "fellow girl." I haven't really had an issue with Yukari myself, even regarding her storyline in The Answer, but I do think that overall, P3R does a better job communicating her emotional response to the situation (minus the fact that they took out her trying to take the key which was a perfect lead-in to her emotional breakdown). Someone in a commentary video about The Answer probably said it best when they pointed out that it wasn't Yukari that changed so much as the fact that we grew up and finally understood her better.
I am so glad that Yukari is more well liked now. She is always my favourite character and my go to romance for the Mc and I always love her social link, so hearing how she was hated made me kinda sad. Funnily enough, I never got to play the answer since I only had Portable at the time so I was worried if I would hate her if I ever played the game, untill I saw a playthrough of Fes the answer and thought, huh actually no I still love her character.
As someone who didn't enjoy the game (specifically the FES version, the only one I played), I was as you initially neutral about her, although I liked her role in the main story and the bond she forges with the protagonist. After some years I can say she's probably become my favourite character of the megaten series in general, especially after living a similar situation that made me appreciate even more her emotional bursts and growth throughout the story Sorry if I made any errors
I got P3 when it released way back when and Yukara was always my favorite. Somehow I never notice the hate she got. lol Ignorance is bliss. I always like her best because she felt like a normal girl. No real person just a beckon of positive traits with nothing negative. All persona characters have their flaws they have to overcome. Its the whole bases of character growth in these stories.
i played P3FES maybe 3 years ago and really loved Yuka throughout. she had a couple of annoying moments sure but so did a lot of P3’s cast which i think was the fucking point. these characters are meant to act like REAL PEOPLE 👏🏼
Not gonna lie, I wish FEMC didn't happen, mostly cause her fans that I've met are shallow and annoying, she is some extra content that while not bad at all, brings down the whole thing because she is a lesser counterpart to the original protagonist
Great video, pretty much exactly my thoughts on this topic! Although I don't think FeMC is in a similar boat as Yukari was. Yeah, she does get hate sometimes but people overwhelmingly love her from what I've seen (2nd in Persona Champions for example). I think the small amount of hate may've been born as some weird countermeasure, combating the love she gets.
I remember a year ago when i got into Persona/Megami Tensei through some of your videos, about the bad endings of the games and what versions to play, i then played a lot of the p3p pc port and Yukari became my favourite character. Then i found out that people seemingly hated her and i was just sitting there being confused like "wait what, really? why?" Lmao.
I’ve only played Reload for P3 and I’d heard that people didn’t like Yukari but she very quickly became my favorite character in the game. I think a lot of it is that she feels more like a real human being, more real than any other characters in the Persona games I’ve played (admittedly just P3R and P5R, still working myself up to playing P4G.) I think it would be interesting if Ohya got the treatment next. It was really weird for me when I found out how much hate there is for Ohya. I do agree that more “show over tell” would have been great for her confidant story but just hating her? Eh, I’ve just had to accept that this is another way that I’m weird.
@@cryguy0000 Futaba?... Really now? I mean I like her as a character and I like the story of her trauma but realistic is questionable when she's a super genius hacker gamer gurl.
ironically i watched a p3fes letsplay from a female content creator and she was literally raging at yukari while she talked about her dad dying. i had to stop watching the lp it was so bad 😭
I remember playing through persona 3 fes in 2015-2016 back in college. Two things I noticed about the persona community back then when it came to Yukari. 1. A lot of people didn’t actually understand Yukaris character or her arc in the story. They just chalked up her actions up to she’s being a selfish bitch in FES when in reality I could tell she was dealing with loss in a realistic manner. Literally she lost the love of her life, who funny enough I actually romanticed in the original story, who helped comfort her get over her families death while finding the strength to continue living. Why would she not do everything to get the 1 person she had left back? 2. As you’ve said a lot of the people back then were anywhere between teens to to early-mid 20’s with some folks who were a little bit older. I know personally because I talked to these people on Facebook groups back in the day. Nowadays I’d imagine they’ve lived some life so they can understand and sympathize with Yukari now.
I think reload did an absolutely excellent job of making her breakdown more digestible Most people I know that played OG. The answer in my opinion didn’t actually understand what the game was trying to convey through Yukari. Reload makes it a lot more clear, and just makes me love her even more She’s probably the most realistic character in the game, because of how raw her emotions are
This is the first time i know yukari hated, i like her since fes.. she is the most char im used.. also she is the most realistic teenager in the series
damn this came out on the day i played p3r but i liked her when i played mostly because she was actually nice and cared about me at the start and also she just seemed like a normal girl with parent problems so i thought the hate was kinda wack.
I like Yukari I don't mind she wonderful character since I played P3:reload and never play org p3. SO Overall I did enjoy the game and I am happy with new voice actors especially Fuuka. Since I love Fuuka so sweet.
the main target audience for persona, primarily back then, were mostly made up of virgin dudes whose knowledge about women was almost null. So the writing of Yukari, while ahead of its time, was there to break their fantasy in some way. They would give up on a “waifu” at the minimum negative trait they see, because they don’t look for realism on their self insert fantasy harem game. That’s why cartoonish simps like Rise and ti some extent aigis are popular, because thats what they like and helps their escapism dream. Sorry but this was the reason why I hated the Persona fandom and why i’ll stop playing it if atlus keeps pandering to these kind of people. Luckily times have changed, and fans are different, but dunno… after seeing the drastic changes of The Answer, I feel like they are still considering the virgin dudes as the main audience
I agree with most of this except I think Rise is much more than just a "protagonist simp". She's got great empathy and emotional intelligence (telling Yosuke to stop bullying Kanji at onr point) and actually takes the platonic route the BEST of P4's girls.
@@BigKlingy I think Chie was the one who told Yosuke to stop bullying Kanji and that Kanji doesn't find it funny. Tho the IT members just act and react the same to Yosuke bc he back forth with everyone. The bro characters Eikichi, Junpei, Yosuke syndrome. (And first archetype girls Lisa, Yukari, Chie).
I disliked Yukari back when I first played Persona 3 FES because she struggled in the early game on hard mode (I was stupid for playing hard mode first despite it being the only way I play P3 now) and it made me have a bias against her, but I really started enjoying her character (and P3 as a whole) and appreciating the nuances of her when the second half of the game came in. I love her as a character now, she serves a vital role in bringing the interpersonal conflict of the cast along which I appreciate so much. Yukari and how she impacts Mitsuru (my favorite character in all of Persona because of how her own arc mirrored a lot of my personal struggles in life) is something I adore, and I am grateful she is a character a lot more people are appreciating now.
Yeah I actually kind of figured that was a factor in why people hated Yukari. It's because they had to go through bs boss battles just to get Yukari sass as a reward which really made that salt carry over lol.
I'M THAT NOZOMI FAN! BEST TWIN REPRESENTATION IN ALL OF MEDIA!!!
Okay just wanted to chime in and say
Ive loved Yukari since i played FES for the first time in 2021.
Yukari and Junpei are easily some of the best written Persona characters of all time for their depth and character development.
would you say you've been waiting for this (sorry)
Similar story for me. She felt like she had actual agency rather than just constantly kissing the ground you walk on.
persona fans finally have good reading comprehension
I mean they dumbed the writing down soooo....
Not sure I'd call it "good" quite yet, but it's at least better than before
you people are so beyond insufferable.
To me, the new voice is what made her seem less of an asshole. I even liked her in the main game but despised her in Portable.
ABSOLUTELY NOT. have you seen the fucking twitter debates? there are some mfs out there that genuinely, unironically think persona 4 is pro-cop
It’s a shame that it took almost 2 decades for fans to realize what a well written character she was.
I knew right away. She's always been my favorite persona girl
Wouldn’t be the first time an overwhelming amount of people in the fanbase had terrible opinions lol
Shoutout to the tumblr persona community who are REALLY unhinged about this character. In a good way.
THIS IS LITERALLY SO FUCKING REAL
They got rid of Yukari fighting for the key really made the situation less impactful
I still have no idea why people hate ken it's like people forget he's a legit kid
@@ullr1438 The thing is after Ken's arc with Shinji and his persona evolving, he disappeared from the story entirely.
Maybe his VA overall is better but his scream in that one scene was awful
I understand that Ken is well written and a good character. Still not a fan.
While she is initially rude and distant, she is a very interesting and complex character that grows a lot during the story.”
*monkey’s paw finger curls*
“Wow, Reload changed her tone so much in the dub to the point that she comes across as a bland and generic anime girl now.
@@pokemonduckP5S was my first Persona game(I have to clarify that I already had the general idea of what happens in Persona 1 to 5 before that.)
Anyways, I didnt act like that. In fact, Yukari is one of my favorite P3 characters!
Also, I was already a Danganronpa fan back then, and one of my favorite characters was Sayaka, who I find to be an interesting character. I dont know if it's still happening, but I didnt personally liked the general reception of that character(about 4 to 5 years ago)
At least on RUclips comment sections
i hoped junpei's character would get some more recognition, as his growth from immaturity is something i think was one of the most well handled aspects of P3.
Junpei's maturity was one of the highest of the Answer. Unfortunately, it was overshadowed by other things.
I think the Persona spinoffs and reload helped improved Yukari’s reputation.
A watered down Yukari being liked more just feels kinda sad tbh.
It is.
Because the original version just comes off as a bitch. I romanced her and she still comes off as a bitch.
They didn't water her down. They made her more accurate to how she was always meant to be
@@connorharnage6697 Yeah.
I've always been a Yukari fan since day 1 FES. People only hate her because she is legit the most realistic character in the series
That's a weird way to spell anybody from persona 2
she is literally the best girl.... Simps will go for talking robot instead cause its easier to date than a REAL girl
She is NOT the most realistic in the series. She's up there but 2 specifically, everyone is more realistic
Well after a decade yuka tan is finally back at the top
You're da man, Junpei.
We got Yukari not being hated AND Yukari not calling Junpei a slur? what a year to live
I'll be honest i want an Ohya comeback, not because i like her character in particular but because i think that her confidant is one the few Confidants that actually has a legit social commentary instead of forcing the narrative to make their characters into underdogs, who is kinda my problem with P5.
Interesting
Ohya's Confidant is legit really good. I think her being a romance option just ruins her character for a lot of people.
useless confidant
also it would be really funny
useless social link
It justs sucks to always see that part of the fandom beefing.
persona fans are finally older than the characters and can finally understand a flawed character can be enjoyed actually

Would love to see a FEMC video from you. She got so much love this year alone despite being shafted by Atlus
I played P3P in 2019 and Yukari was my favorite character almost immediately, finding out lots of people hated her was really surprising, so it's good that the general opinion has shifted.

Sincerely, since I played Persona 3 FES back on 2008 Yukari became my Top Waifu on the Persona franchise.
We take small victories here. I've repped Yukari nation since day one 🙏🏾
(I’m sorry, but Thanatos tearing apart Orpheus used to look intimidating, now it looks like a balloon is being overfilled and popping.) And now The Answer came out and they watered her character down to the point of almost being unrecognisable, because people can’t stand female characters being three dimensional and acting like human beings (breaking news, humans aren’t particularly rational beings).
never hated Yukari

She was hated? I haven’t finished p3R yet but I never knew people didn’t like her
Always had
back in the day they used to hate her. i remember being in this (seemingly) small contingent of fans that loved her and thought she was realistic haha.
People hated her mainly because of the epilogue. In the base game she was fine to most people. I personally never hated her because the way she acted is just that of a realistically flawed character. They dumbed her emotions down a lot in the new epilogue to make her “Less unlikeable”
Yeah, it's weird. I feel Junpei was kind of hated for similar reasons but not to nearly the same level
A lot of people don’t understand back then a lot of it was just misogyny because their waifu wasn’t immediately head over heels for the mc.
She was the only non-P4 member I always had in my party 🤭
When I played P3P this year, she took a bit of a step back (hello, I am a female fan who also adores FemC, also Akihiko just stepped into the door and was like: Behold, I am your fav PQ Party member now), but not because the game made me like her less, but because I just learned to love the rest of the cast when they were more than punchlines (Also the Japanese voice actors did a lot to improve everyone's standing).

I think the biggest display of how people have changed their views on how characters like Yukari are treated by fans is (OMORI SPOILERS)
Aubrey from Omori (a game that released in 2020) has almost the exact same character arc Yukari in the Answer does (the circumstances ARE quite different but it's a similar idea), but Aubrey is overwhelmingly popular among fans of Omori (from my understanding anyway), which... kinda makes Yukari's Reload!Answer situation kind of sad.
That is actually a REALLY good comparsion
Probably one of the reasons people hated Yukari so much in the original Episode Aigis is the way she treated Aigis in that expansion. It's no surprise that Aigis is the second most popular character in the series only beaten by Joker, so every person who mistreats our favorite toaster is enemy #1. even if it is understandable that she reacts that way
Reminds me of how people used to hate Ken because he hated Shinjiro. People are always mean to characters who dislike popular characters...
@@Shadow-Joop-157 As someone who likes Aigis over Yukari, I never once felt that way.
Same for Mitsuru. They also stack more hate on Yukari for getting on Mitsuru's case for obvious reasons that she states repeatedly but I guess people don't care about that because "Omg Mommy! Woof🐶 Woof Bark 🐶Bark🐶"
@@ShadowOfMassDestruction I don't think people really care about that because Yukari x Mitsuru is probably the most popular ship in the series that isn't about any of the protagonists especially after 4 arena ultimax.

ever since i first played fes circa 2010, my favorite character in the whole series has been yukari, it has persisted to this day. participated in a loooooot of arguments about her character on gamefaqs and /v/ over the years. warms my heart to see people finally coming around on her.
probably wouldnt surprise you that i much prefer the vocal delivery of FES and ai ebihara is in my top 2 best girls in p4
When i first got into persona 3 portable i never really hated her she just seemed like a normal girl going through smth tough
"Maybe there's that one Gourmet King enjoyer-
That person. That would also be me.
I came into Persona 3 Reload being told Nozomi was the absolute worst SL in the game, I reached the other side tearing up. And I'll explain why:
While I didn't have weight nor self-image issues, his inferiority complex towards his brother hit me like a f'cking truck.
*Hell, breaking out people from their own "illusions" is the whole point of the Moon Arcana SLs.*
I know I'm in a very small minority here, but I don't care. Nozomi was a pleasant surprise for me.
Since I started playing P3P back in June, I’ve honestly grown to really love Yukari as a character… so when I found out she was hated until recently, I got so confused 😭
nice video man
Well at least it happened even though they didn’t really learn from the original they learned from the remake that changed it a little
honestly yukari is the persona character that feels the most like they could be an actual person, i have no clue what gives me those vibes i just have them
Ghost Trick OST? Hell yeah
9:18 ...FemC has haters?
Yes
Yes a lot of them. Mostly bc the competetive aspect with the male mc and also the Ken route.
@@shaktra1563 Damn I barely see them. Maybe they're more common on Twitter
Yes
I haven’t played fes yet. Mostly because I don’t want to pay a bunch of money for a ps2 game. But I have seen a bunch of comparisons between the new and old yukari, and yeah I wish she was a bit more prickly like in the older version. I thought she was kinda meh in the base reload. But episode aigis made me warm up to her more honestly. Her portrayal is how it feels to lose someone, and it really hit home for me. Voice actress killed it. She went from low b tier to high a tier for me
Loved yukari since day 1
Ah, mystic quest battle 2 ost...
God, ive played and replayed that song at least a thousand times...
As humans, we all have flaws. Yukari isn't hated by me.
Never understood why she was divisive in the first place
8:11 i can only hope and pray that Morgana gets more love someday. He's one of my top 3 favorite P5 characters and it hurts me that so many people misunderstand and hate on him when he's a really good character IMO. I see myself a lot in him as well so yeah 🥲
Edit: another opinion i have is that the yukari vs Junpei thing is so oberblown.
P3r was my first game. I always liked yukari as a character
wait people used to hate Yukari, I played the original and thought she was pretty ok
And how did she not realise the kid may want revenge against his mother's murderer if he sought her out, especially when there was no explanation between both parties and she let the accidental murderer and the victim's son work together with no eyes on both of them.
the fact that people can’t hate her because she has a „good design” and she is „waifu”really tells you a lot of persona fandom
@@aXtXqXd No it doesn’t lol. A character being liked just for having a good design is something every fandom has.
I could never hate my Queen
4:38 it's me i'm a woman who plays Persona
i also love the slight hesitance with "at least... 10 of you?" 😭
there might be dozens of us! dozens!
>yukari takeba is no longer hated
>become a yukari hater out of spite
Yukari my beloved queen 👑
Going from having her as my fav in 2020 to NOOO her having to defend that is so fucking Cathartic
shes my actual fucking goat i'll never understand how people hate her
Thus, it has been done
After some years I can say she's probably become my favourite character of the megaten series in general, especially after living a similar situation that made me appreciate even more her emotional bursts and growth throughout the story
Sorry if I made any errors
I got P3 when it released way back when and Yukara was always my favorite. Somehow I never notice the hate she got. lol Ignorance is bliss. I always like her best because she felt like a normal girl. No real person just a beckon of positive traits with nothing negative. All persona characters have their flaws they have to overcome. Its the whole bases of character growth in these stories.
Great Video
P.s I can relate, I’ve played P5R (5 Times)
i played P3FES maybe 3 years ago and really loved Yuka throughout. she had a couple of annoying moments sure but so did a lot of P3’s cast which i think was the fucking point. these characters are meant to act like REAL PEOPLE 👏🏼
Not gonna lie, I wish FEMC didn't happen, mostly cause her fans that I've met are shallow and annoying, she is some extra content that while not bad at all, brings down the whole thing because she is a lesser counterpart to the original protagonist
As far as I've seen no one hates FeMC, people only hate her fans
7:00
right, when those women step on the toes of someone higher up on the victim hierarchy.
Really? I mean Futaba is a pretty human character, in a cast full of human characters
Finally another reload fan in this place
@@cryguy0000 Futaba?... Really now? I mean I like her as a character and I like the story of her trauma but realistic is questionable when she's a super genius hacker gamer gurl.
@@ShadowOfMassDestruction aside from the hacker part I found her uncannily relatable.
Last time I checked I'm still here so no you didn't
Wow a lone soldier against an entire army 👏👏👏
ironically i watched a p3fes letsplay from a female content creator and she was literally raging at yukari while she talked about her dad dying. i had to stop watching the lp it was so bad 😭
I've heard about this but never found out who it was 😭 who was it and why was he raging??
0:55 I'm kinda of an apathetic sociopath, so chilling with Yukari would be a thumbs up for me.
Also, she's a brunette.
I think reload did an absolutely excellent job of making her breakdown more digestible
Most people I know that played OG. The answer in my opinion didn’t actually understand what the game was trying to convey through Yukari.
Reload makes it a lot more clear, and just makes me love her even more
She’s probably the most realistic character in the game, because of how raw her emotions are
Good, now my goat rise is next🙏
They barely changed anything. The story is the exact same
8:52 help??? I actually do relate to the gourmet king and this jumpscared me
I've also warmed up to her considerably, having replayed P3P recently. Mitsuru is queen though.
Mitsuru absolutely isn't a queen. She's a fraud who utterly failed to help Shinjiro or Ken.
Firstttttt😂. Also great vid dude
What changed my opinion of her was female mc route in portable as well as persona 4 arena ultimax
