You can run “tests” till the cows come home, but the real world is where the rubber meets the road. If the fellow from Ingersoll is so proud of his product, one would think he would show greater interest in understanding/resolving the problem. Then again, maybe he already knows the marketing department got creative with the specs! Great videos!

Ingersoll has gone downhill, we bought a new mobile air setup for a 40lb jack hammer and the hammer fell apart within the first 2 hours of use. Both bolts unscrewed themselves completely then the air compressor began to have issues where the countdown for glow plugs was short and it would crank no start til the battery died. You had no way of holding the plugs a little longer like an 04 model with a key where you could override a shutdown. We fixed the manifold on the older model and left the new model with our superintendent. Let's just say the office was pissed we hated it.

The Engineer from Ingersoll should have said, unless I missed it, hey that switch is bad so and so will be contacting you today about us making that right. Then they could have had that one back for testing and given you a new one. We all know there isn't much of a chance that that is ever going to happen... Nothing beats real world testing. Maybe Harbor Freight will want to sponsor you. Keep up the good work!

IR's Winnegar probably sits in an "Office Space" like cubicle, and doesn't have the authority to bring any expenses to the IR company. He probably as team leader stacked the design papers up in a neat stack, but has probably never worked on himself a fastener bigger than what you find on a swing set or bicycle. Your test was right on. As a shade tree mechanic have a small made in USA IR air compressor. Thanks for providing the information.

I just cringed when you got done with the rollers and then talked about how you were going to have to drill out the stripped holes for the guards. Ugh, it would be worlds easier if you had left the rollers off so you could use a mag drill to drill those and then use the mag drill with a center drill to support and keep the tap straight when starting. If a larger hex bolt won't fit, how about a socket head cap screw?

You would think that dude from Ingersoll would have jumped all over the trigger issue, and asked questions about the problem if he was so proud of that impact that he supposedly engineered or whatever. Most of those guys like that are full of it. The guy you called about the roller problem didn't seem to waste any time with an answer. Goes to show the night/day difference about somebody who knows something, and somebody who just is just a condescending a-hole that's only about image projection, and nothing else. You are right, torque is torque, from the first bolt, that battery is not at 100% capacity. So your torque numbers change. Batteries operated tools are convenient. They don’t require as much support. But if you have a big job, better bring the air, or AC electric.

Enjoying your rebuild videos Jeff. You do a lot of work by yourself and I appreciate the effort and energy it takes to get these jobs done by yourself. Have to tear into my D7e before to long. I have a final drive that’s lost some teeth. Think it’s coming from the reduction gear but haven’t torn anything apart yet. I don’t have the tools so may have to call in some help for this one unless I pull the sprocket and cover off as a unit and assess from there. Curious if you have used any of the aftermarket final drive parts. Costex(CTP) is substantially cheaper then cat. I have decent luck with their stuff in the past but you’re always wondering if it’s a mistake when you put the order in.

25:56 TTC has capability to test both directions. I have not watched in a while but I know they have tested left hand before. Just a matter of changing the bolt. Think they were using 1" hardware. Not sure how common a left hand threaded nut and bolt combo are.
One think I learned from TTC is the time it takes. Peak torque frequently takes 15 or more seconds. That's a lot longer than most of us hammer on something.

Increased air pressure absolutely increases the torque capacity of impact guns. What peaked interest in the correlation between air pressure and torque with pneumatic impact guns was watching my friend trying to rotate his tires on his duramax pickup. This was probably 10 years ago and he was using an earthquake 1/2" drive impact and he was unable to remove the lugnuts with the gun. He then took the jack handle and placed it over a breaker bar for leverage and the snap-on breaker bar broke before the lugnuts. I walked over to his air compressor and it was shutting off at 125 psi so I removed the cover from the pressure switch and adjusted it to shut off at 150 psi and he was then able to easily remove the lugnuts with the impact. So after coming to the conclusion that more is better when it comes to air pressure and impact guns I decided to see how much is better. I decided to increase pressure 50 psi at a time as I tried to tighten or break varying sized bolts. The test subject was a brand new earthquake impact that top of the line at the time and air pressure was supplied from a composite wound high pressure gas cylinder and it was filled with 6000 psi of compressed air. After 200 psi I decided against holding the impact by hand so I hose clamped a piece of angle iron to the handle of the impact and I used a length of 1\16" steel cable to activate the trigger at a distance of 8 feet. I made a loop around the trigger and used a pulley mounted to the angle iron to change the direction of pull. Torque output noticeably increased each time the pressure was increased by 50 psi. The highest pressure I achieved through the impact was 450 psi and the impact exploded after 2-3 seconds of operation. My regulator was rated for a maximum regulated output pressure of 2000 psi and It would be a pleasure to test pneumatic impacts up at 2000 psi.

@@Jpaydirt What model Ingersoll Rand impact do you have? I have the 9691 which is rated at 3000 ft lb of nut busting torque and only 2200 ft lb of tightening torque. When I was deciding on which w9000 series impact to purchase I was comparing the w9491 with the w9691 and I was trying to figure out why the w9461 only had 2600 ft lb of nut busting torque and the only real difference is the 6" extended anvil. My guess is that the added weight of having the 6" extended anvil aids in breaking loose fasteners.

Jeff causing "my camp is better" division in the torque driver community again. ;)
Was the battery powered unit faulty? Maybe that specific one was, maybe the max torque rating is made under certain conditions through a series of equations rather than putting actual twist to bolt or stud. Maybe the rating is just to tighten while loosening is significantly less to half the max rating for reasons I'm not engineer enough to outline. I don't know the answer. Just what was seen and recorded.

Good for you Jeff doing your own test with the IR. People like their stats but you're right, if it doesn't work then it doesn't work. 👍. What a pain with those snap rings, you might as well just cast your own friggin rollers from scratch next time.

For putting bigger bolts in the rock guards you could possibly get 12 point headed bolts for a smaller socket size or socket head. If they were 1” bolts to start with running a 25mm drill in there might be challenging as it’s going to be pretty close to hole size. Good luck Jeff will win

    Hey Jeff,
You should contact the guy on Torque Test and see if he wants to test it. maybe he would even fix it for you 🙂

I worked on a 46A that was wobbling in the Ocean and the roller frame bolts were never taken out. We used a 21 ft. Pipe to break the bolts loose, but broke all 56 bolts off and used a magnetic drill press to drill out the bolts and had a welder blow out the rest and chiseled out the rest to the threads. What a mess and then used never seize on all the bolts when we put it back together.

FWIW I would have fixed the track guard holes before putting on the rollers, so you could get a mag drill in there.

Thx Jeff,I do enjoy your time spent and your honesty!
Don’t listen to the BS ers there a dime a dozen and as long as they don’t have to look you in the face they’ll say just about anything as long as they don’t have to back it up

Mr Griffey is building up a strategy to claim that fluffy wind guard on your remote microphone. Be careful where you set it down Jeff 😂

Ive switched to buying vevor tools. I thi k they are as good or better than hf stuff. Hf keeps changing the name on their products and they are almost as expensive as the big name brands now

If you are anything like me, I bet you figured out the quickest and easiest way to grind those snap rings down right around the time you got down to two left to do. Maybe the front will fall off of that Ingersol and they will tell you to take it outside the environment, that seems to be where his conversation went.
    thanks for the videos, Jeff.

How hard would it be to add a shaft and levers on the front of the Galion that had push pull rods thru the front and connect to the original levers? Use pins and clips so it could be removed if not needed. Just to keep from climbing in and out to make small adjustments.

Great video 👍 Maybe be that rand engineer should share how they measure their torque because they all measure differently 😅😅😅
