  • Video tutorial on how to test a vehicle's fuses to determine if they are need of a replacement using various methods. This tutorial does include four different methods which are using a test light/lamp, testing voltage with a multimeter, doing a visual inspection, and testing for continuity with a multimeter. Fuse boxes are found on various locations throughout your vehicle depending on your make or model. Some of these locations can consist of under the dashboard, on the side of the dashboard, under the hood, in the trunk, in the glove box, under the seat, etc. You will have to consult with your vehicles owner's manual to determine where it is located. When replacing a fuse, it is mandatory to replace it with the appropriate rated fuse so you do not risk damaging your vehicle's electrical system. This particular tutorial was done on a 2003 Dodge Dakota.

    Tools/Supplies Needed:
    -test light/lamp
    -multimeter
    Procedure:
    -locate your fuse panel and remove the access cover
    -determine what fuse is required to be tested
    -some circuits will need to be power up, for example the ignition either needs to be on or on accessories to power up the radio
    -find a sufficient ground source if you are too far away from the battery
    -if using a test light/lamp, put the ground clamp on a sufficient ground located or negative battery terminal, touch the test probe on the two test points on the fuse
    -if the test light/lamp does not light up on either test terminal, the circuit may not be powered up or there is an issue with the circuit
    -if the test light/lamp only lights up on one test terminal and not the other, the fuse will need to be replaced
    -if the test light/lamp lights up on both test terminals, the fuse is good
    -if using a multimeter, set it to the DC voltage on the two place reading
    -clamp the ground probe on a sufficient ground source or negative battery terminal
    -using the positive probe, test the test terminals on the fuse
    -if no voltage is shown, the circuit may not be powered up or there is an issue with the circuit
    -if voltage is shown on one test terminal and not the other, the fuse will need to be replaced
    -if voltage is shown on both test terminals, the fuse is good
    -we can also do a visual inspection on the fuse, depending on the type it may or may not need to be removed
    -inspect the fusible link inside the fuse to see if it's broken or there is a burnt spot on the housing
    -using a multimeter we can also check for continuity
    -set the multimeter to the lowest ohms setting, this can ONLY be done when the fuse is out of the vehicle otherwise you do risk the chance of damaging electronics in your vehicle
    -touch the probes together to ensure the multimeter is functioning correctly
    -touch each test probe on each terminal on the fuse and ensure there is continuity
    -if there is no continuity, the fuse will need to be replaced

    How do you test fuses while generator is off but some fuses run like the control panel but you wish to do a quick check by not pulling out the fuses or turning the generator on? Obviously voltage test would be pointless because since most fuses won’t be live so you couldn’t do the test unless using ohms/ continuity. I’m just curious the fastest way to check in that instance any suggestions?

    Hi, I try to measure the voltage of all my fuses in the fuse box of my car, but all of them gives me 0V. I thought that my multimeter did not work, but it wasn't. Is there any problem on my car? I need to install a dash cam, so that's why I need to find the correct fuse. I tried also with car switched on.

    Hi @4DIYers, I have a Nissan Leaf as you know if you put ON the heat in the car it reduces the range, so I decided to buy Roadpro heat 12V 300 Watt Output 25amp, the car has 15amp I think, My Question is if I increase the amp to use with Roadpro from 15amp to 25amp would it blow up anything or damage anything in the car or make any changes and will the car heat stop working if I increase fuses

    Hi. I have a question.. Earlier Afternoon i was changing me car's rear roof head bulb to some Led SMD bulb. Firstly it turned on and i was going to put back its cover holder. But suddenly a little spark (which i'd just noticed) came from light and my cars parking lights started to blink. The problem is when i close all the doors the roof light keeps getting On (the button position in middle) . Ok when i lock my car with remote with all the doors are locked. It indicates by beeping like the door is still open.
    I don't know whether it's some sensor issue or what.i already checked Fuses.
    kindly help me.

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  8 лет назад

      Quite possibly there was a fault with the led bulb and now it's back feeding power. Some led bulbs can only be installed one way, others aren't a very good quality and will fail quickly. Try switching back to the old bulb to see if the problem is still there.

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  7 лет назад +3

      That is a test light, various styles are available on the market today. It has a wire coming out of the back of the handle which is for the ground and has an alligator clamp. It needs to be connected to a sufficient ground source such as the negative battery post. But as an alternative I used the door hinge bolt in the door jamb.

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  7 лет назад +1

      Any bare metal bolt which connects to the main body of a vehicle. If you do not have one, run a jumper cable and attach it to the main strut bolts on the shock tower. Or if the battery is closer, just use the negative battery terminal. The negative lead just has an alligator clip.

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  8 лет назад

      Most likely a faulty fuse. Be sure to use a multimeter as a visual inspection doesn't always work. Some cars may have multiple low amperage circuits under one fuse, but a high amperage draw on one circuit, such as the high beams being separate. Don't forget to subscribe :)

    Great vid but I had to slow it down to 75 % as you talk too fast. Question: I saw another vid and the guy showed what was the Load side and the Draw side of the fuse. He put the fuse back in the fuse box after testing an empty slot. If it showed 0 it was the Draw side - if it showed 12, it was the Load side. So I assume that the fuse has to be put back in correctly so the Load side matches up in the fuse box? Or does it really matter? I noticed on the 20 amp fuse in the beginning that it was in the opposite way of the others, so it can be put in either way? Thanks!

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  4 года назад +2

      Thank you! My new videos are much more refined. Technically the supply side can be checked with the fuse in place as well, there are little cutouts on the top of the fuse to place a probe. The orientation of the fuse doesn't matter, it works either way. The only thing is don't mix up their ratings. A lower rated fuse on a higher amperage circuit will just keep blowing a fuse. However a higher rated fuse on a lower amperage circuit won't blow when it should and instead will cause other parts of the circuit to overheat, damaging components and possibly causing a fire.

      +Hooman sth Check all the fuses, some circuits may share the same fuse. Other issues can also be a faulty bulb, bad ground, faulty light socket, switch issue, or lighting module. But the best place to start is with the fuses and do not just visually inspect them.

      +ComPrt3 Unfortunately no. As mentioned in the video, doing an ohms/continuity test will send a small amount of power through the circuit. You can back feed power and do greatly risk damaging electrical components, especially on newer vehicles equipped with different computers.

      I use the continuity test (combined with diode test on some DMMs) because I like to hear the beep.
      Bada bing. Bada boom. Beep. Not blown.
      However, that's with the fuse removed from the panel, and if the visual hasn't already confirmed the fuse is blown.
      Now, when my fuses blow, I replace them with fuses that have an LED that light ups when blown, especially for the cigarette lighter power port accessory outlets. Running an inverter to charge a laptop, iPad, a couple phones and operate a big screen TV often causes an overcurrent situation.
      Mark the panel where fuses frequently blow with fingernail polish.
