- Pasco County, Florida jail reports about what happened when a corrections officer shot 29-year-old Matthew Trevino, who suffers from mental illness, are remarkably consistent with one another.
But they are not consistent with a video recorded by one of the officers.

How are you operating a weapon with no training to use it, every officer is trained to use everything on their belt, if what is stated is true, officers were given a weapon without being trained how to use it, feel for that department! Can’t justify that

They are supposedly overseen by the state in which they operate, but, I know a few corrections officers, and they've told me in detail how little training they actually get. Once a year to a range to barely qualify. Once a year to a self defense course to prove they're being trained in...something.
The Fact that even the other Officers around were surprised by him suddenly shooting, is a pretty good point that this shouldnt have happened.

I used to be a Detention Deputy, and we had two isolation cells like this. We just looked in the window at the floor to make sure the drain in the floor still had all it's vent posts, just in case someone broke them off to use as a weapon (which has happened, not to me, but that's why they started counting the drain posts)
There was no need for this amount of force. Obviously you wouldn't do that alone, that's a huge safety risk, but with a few officers for back up, you could take care of this by just going in there, or you could just wait until they calm down, or wait for the nurse to come by to see if they snapped out of their episodes. Multiple options that would've been safer for everyone involved.
This is the reason why people need to start fighting back and hurt them before they can hurt us

I’m a retired U.K. prison Officer and I can’t believe what I’ve just seen. It’s incomprehensible to me that these officers carry guns at all, but to see one used in a situation where it could NEVER be justified is beyond me. The guy was in his cell and he was no danger to anyone, so for this coward to put his gun through the flap and shoot him should result in an attempted murder charge.
Disregarding an officers lawful commands is a violation of jail/prison rules here in the US. They are allowed to use whatever force they deem is necessary

As a vet myself, I can’t believe how close that muzzle was to others around him, and he gave no warning. That officer should be stripped of all weapons and placed on desk duty for the remainder of his career.

In a situation of that nature dealing with a propensity-to-violence behavior related to a diagnosed mental illness, it's imperative that the responding team would look for persuasive means to de-escalate the erratic behavior.
When I was in jail, I never looked at sheriff's as care takers... I think you need to rethink that.

Yep, that deputy needs to share some cell space with the other inmates. The other deputies weren't even ready for him to do that. Complete violation of procedures for LL, for cell removal, and general police work.
It does not matter what rounds you have in a shotgun, leathal or non-lethal. You never need to shoot a guy point blank with one while he is locked in a cell with a heavy door between yall.

I got shot the same exact way in seg at Richland correctional in Ohio. They lied on the report as well. Filed a grievance and they told me it was a planned use of force.

Jail is cruel and unusual punishment as it is. Imagine being put in jail for something a simple as driving infractions and having been thrust into such a violent environment from both guards and inmates. There needs to be alternatives, or at least eliminate the violence.

It's not about him being the cell it's about power and control .the prisoner wasn't doing what he was told ,so the guard ego was hurt and he had to show who was in charge!
