Nikon might not have leapfrogged the competition with these updated bodies (not sure why so many reviewers seem to expect this). However, they are now producing competing bodies with class leading image quality, with an associated lens line up which is quickly growing and proving superior in nearly every aspect, and doing so at a better price point :)

  • @bencollins7684

Fro, when you do the full test of the Z6ii, please maximise the autofocus capability. You do this by:
    1. Change menu A3 (focus lock on) to 'quick'
    2. Change menu G4 (video af speed) to +5 (fastest)
    3. Set 'when to apply' for item (2) to 'always'
    4. Change menu G5 (video tracking sensitivity) to 'high'
This will DRAMATICALLY improve the lock on and focus tracking in all autofocus modes, but mainly in AF-C. Two of the above settings are for video, but for some reason they transfer over to improve the focus of stills as well.
This will, however, make the changes in video focus really snappy, which I don't find to be a problem.

Speed of focus is essential with kids who never sit still and wildlife. Sometimes a bird will land on a branch for 1 second then off. Falcons reaching well over 100mph in a dive…. If it can’t keep up with my 6 year old running towards the camera it doesn’t have a chance with Birds of Prey. This was a decent preview. Though from the initial look doesn't seem like a drastic difference, but hey, if the hit rate is good and you are getting above 90% in focus consistently, then its working great. I don't think there's any camera with a 100% hit rate. I don't think above 90% (whether it is 90 or 95%) it makes a huge difference anyways. If the A7III with 10 fps get 95% in focus and z6iii with 14 fps gets 90% or 11-12 in focus, that's still more pics in focus for the z6ii.

Why would or should anyone really care??? One can jump from one system to another as much as he likes, but what such a person would really get except spending a ton of money? A better photography skills? Seriously??? Even Jared constantly admits that you can't go wrong with any of big 3, so it all depends on your needs and oreferences. From an IRS perspective, deriving income from photography is what makes me a professional, NOT the number of card slots or the speed of my autofocus. I am thankful Nikon came out with mark ii versions, as it means I can buy the original Z6/Z7 at a greatly reduced price. There are lots of things we use in life that don't have redundancy. How many of you have a car with two engines? One could fail and you'd be stranded in a snowstorm north of Baggs, Wyoming. The hubris of this channel is over the top. As photographers, I think we need to push back a little on the "demands" of the RUclips camera cartel, like Mr. "I shoot war" here and "Tony Disrupt". I have unsubscribed from both of these channels because I would rather focus my energy on learning better composition and lighting skills. Go spend your time watching painting channels like
Andrew Tischler. You will learn a lot about proportion, framing, and lighting. If your project is defined by the gear you used to create it, you're an amateur.

sounds about right. the image processing power probably wasnt there with the single processor, but it is there with the dual processor. with that said, i dont really see much benefit of eye-af beyond a certain distance. the z6 could pick it up when they eyes were actually large enough. a computer can always "guess" where they eyes are even if they arent large enough to focus the pupils on, which is what i expect a lot of cameras are actually doing.

This preliminary test is seriously flawed. I would expect the hit rate to be similar in harsh daytime light. Most people that need eye AF are needing it for portraits in low light scenarios. My guess is that the mark 1 will not keep up with the II in lower light.

A couple of things are important to remember when doing AF-C tests, which require either (shock-horror) reading the manual, or having historical knowledge of how Nikon developed both subject tracking and (yes) eye-detect back in the 1990s: (i) 3d-tracking looks primarily for colour information; as you started tracking on your grey top, the camera very accurately maintained focus on that. There is no reason to shift to faces/eyes as they are a different colour. This is particularly useful for birds, cars etc. (ii) Face detect is in fact also automatically eye-detect. All systems identify faces as three oval shapes in a triangle arrangement (2 eyes, 1 mouth). Hence, there is no reason actually to show the little eye-box unless the face makes up a very large portion of the frame such that the DoF would be less than 1-inch. Therefore, whilst on either model you may not see the eye-boxes when a subject is more than ~3yd away, such would only be giving spurious accuracy anyway. Finally, your very erratic movement combined with your blocking flowing-locks would be extremely difficult for any system to lock onto an eye. The tracking modes are typically designed to pick up something larger moving fast like a whole tennis player, grand-prix car etc. Very few people want Federer's eye to be in focus but the rest of his body blurry. What they want is the whole of Federer in focus and the background and foreground out. In essence what is important to realise is that AF-C modes are typically optimised for sports and wildlife, they are not designed for erratic portrait subjects, as most (professional) models tend to stay still.

The IBIS is better than Sony. The price is better than Canon. The camera seems to be okay, but the question is whether or not the camera attracts more buyers than the original because if the cameras stay on the shelves while Sony’s and Canon’s walk out the door, it really doesn’t matter how good the camera is. I am somewhat disappointed in the images from the Canon even though it has twice the resolution. The color science in the Nikon and the depth of the colors are just better in the Nikon. I also have to do a lot more post with the canon images. Also, the Nikon has a much smaller physical foot print and the lenses are smaller. I was now thinking of returning it and getting the Z 7II. I do more landscape and city scape, and night photography. So getting more dynamic range, low noise and better initial metering are bigger priorities for me. We’re all hearing how Canon’s r6 sensor is so much improved. It sounds like the Z6 ii is a step in the right direction. While the processor is dated, doubling the processor should allow for much better upgrades in the future once the better firmware comes out. While I wish Nikon was pushing the envelope more, remember that it took Sony a 3 iterations to make one of the best mirrorless cameras on the market. I don't think that this is pro level camera yet, but I am confident that Nikon will continue to advance their Z system. Z6 seems good enough in terms of AF.

The tracking focus may actually be accurate, but the lagginess in the EVF would seem to make sports & wildlife photography a difficult chore to actually execute. And that blackout... Ugh.

Everyone went crazy with that AF ...i have D850 for portraits and i do not need AF face or eya tracking at all. All brands are great ,but cuz the prices will choose nikon again

I can't really see much of a difference at this point. Nothing critical anyway. I do like the tracking switching to eye/face AF automatically. Looking forward to more tests. I'm assuming Nikon have far more breathing space to improve it moving forward with the dual processors but it's bewildering why we didn't get a faster overlay from the off as they definitely had the time to work on it.

@@diegocuevas6064 Off course you do, everyone does this is pure logic, those are the same cameras with some problems fixed. It’s like saying I actually prefer being healthy than sick. RUclips is full of those comments, this must be an american thing.🤨

@@albert3316 Okay, got you... In fact you're right haha, but the reason of my comment (I didn't mention it, haha my fault) was that I'm willing to spend more money to buy a brand-new z6II (I was looking forward to buying a used original z6 to save a few bucks...) And btw, I know it's obvious that everyone might like better the z6 II than the z6, but I was talking about the AF performance, if you check some other comments, they said the original z6 did better in some parts of the test. :)

    Hi
Would you recommend me moving from d850 to z6 2 for events and portrait shoots. I was wondering if z6 2s eyeAF will be good benifit over d850. Or should I continue with d850. Many times I feel some expressions are missed due to not so perfect focusing.

Excellent performance of the Z6II. Why not put in in front of the Canon R6 or Sony a7III? I'd be surprised if there were any significant difference. To me AF is now pretty much a commodity between the 3 major players. There are simply no measurable differences impacting real life shooting.
What matters is lenses quality and this is where the Z shines very very bright. Even brighter if you look at how much you need to spend with Canon to get close to the level of quality you get with Nikon f1.8 S lenses.

First of all, thank you very much for the video.
Would it be possible to test the behavior of the AF in low light, since the first generation apparently had problems here?

Would the Face Detect be more accurate if your fro wasn’t lunging forward when you stopped? I think another test where your hair is in pigtails is in order!

hello, for video and eye detetcion, do you advise Z6II or sony a7II or coming a7iV ? having a d750 i would prefer Z6II to keep my nikon and art sigma but i really want a good eye detection.

  • @0014929

Thanks for the video, can you do the exact same test but with longer shutter speed like 1/60 -1sec. Reason is to test out the shot is from previous focus point or the current one. Having doubt with this, Nikon already added extra processor, the overlay performance shouldn't be the same like old version, only the real focus point will make it like that.

Hi! comparing to the Sony A7III, how does the Nikon Z6II do in low light (6400 ISO and over) in terms of noise and details? Thanks!
