  • Why do we need libraries, I hear you cry, when there is THE INTERNET? Well, the thing about the internet is that it’ll only show you what’s most popular, not what is BEST.
Do we all want to be Googlesheep, herded to one bit of learning about each thing, or the biggest-rated video of a shark eating a man, or a cat riding around on a small hoover, because that’s what everyone else has looked at? I’d argue that we don’t - that that approach will lead to the death of creativity and cleverness and original thought.
My local library made me - and austerity, in all its blinkered ‘wisdom’, should not be allowed to destroy our libraries through a million paper cuts. Here’s why…
    HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR IDEAS
The idea of both the Moranifesto, and my RUclips channel is that it’s not just me talking about politics in an amusing and relaxed - although still revolutionary - manner. It’s all of us. I firmly believe that everyone has at least one idea that would make the world a better place and I want to hear those ideas, and get them out into the wider world. Together, we can upgrade this planet, in an organised and polite fashion. So - watch my vlogs, then email me your One Minute Manifesto to Moranifesto@eburypublishing.co.uk - and the best ones will be featured on the channel.
We would like a revolution! Please.

I volunteer in my local library, which may seem silly for a 16 year old to do, but from personal experience I can tell you that libraries make a huge difference to the lives of children. This wonderful service helps children learn to read and get into reading, as well as an incredible tool for those who don't have the best social life, for example the eldery, who may only have one social interaction, visiting the library! I'm not exactly the most avid reader anymore because I am so caught up with school, but I know for a fact that libraries could be run in an effective manner if only someone cared enough to look after them. As a person who has grown up in a fairly disadvantaged area ( luckily I have far more opportunities than some due to my school)I know that the library may not only be a place to educate and serve, but also a refuge for those needing an escape from their everyday lives, no matter what that life might be like!!!!!

So beautifully put! Many people do no realise there is still a significant portion of the population who still do not have access to the Internet and they are being left to drown in this modern world. Libraries not only provide the computers for them to use but the knowledge and guidance to teach people how to use them.
Libraries are safe neutral spaces for the vulnerable. With homeless shelters and facilities for people with mental health conditions and learning disabilities closing, they come to the library. The job centre sends people.
I work in libraries and constantly get told, by people who don't use them, that everyone has an iPad/kindle and no one needs them any more. Then I'm usually given a list of all the things they think libraries should offer:
Free wifi - we have that
    Ebooks - we have that
Activities for young people - we do that too
Work with other organisations - we do that
Then I offer them a leaflet and invite them to become members, it's free you know I tell them.

Heartbreaking. I'm so glad Montreal has such a massive and well-organized library system... Thanks for this, Caitlin

Thank you Caitlin, passionately argued and so well put. Thanks for your support for our beleaguered public library system. School libraries are also under threat from misguided school leaders who think 'the internet' is a suitable replacement. #savelibraries

This is so true! I've always been a staunch defenders of libraries but I never considered the thing about being turned into googlesheep

My local library shut down some time ago but it is my favourite building. I used to love it, I'd do the reading challenge every summer. I have vowed to buy the building one day and restore it to what it should be, a fucking library. Or just something for the public, because it's such a lovely building. I loved it so much I built a tiny one for my year 9 art exam.
(If anyone cares it was the old Erith Library, not the new shit stain they loved 300m up the road)

I absolutely love going to the library at school. In study/free periods, it is the only indoor space worth visiting!

Couldn't agree more and am also concerned at the parallel which can be drawn with what's happening with NHS, and school academisation, at the moment. As you say, trying to axe things bit by bit.

Thank you so much for highlighting this !!!!! The library I grew up in is one of the lambeth ones being closed and turned into a gym. As a 17 year old I think I'm allowed to be a bit dramatic some of the time but honestly, my first thought when I heard the plans was 'I used to have faith in humanity, I don't think I do anymore' However, that did change a little when I found out people were occupying it in protest.

At the moment the coucil in Stockport UK is planning to close the main library, a most beautiful library and replace it with a" hub".I visited the hub which admitedly was near a shopping centre and handy for people to pop in , but I personally dont want it to be a 2minute trip !I love to wander through all the various sections of the library and always be amazed at the amount of things I dont know ! All those books to open my mind or let me dream.A love affair statrted in my childhood which has never died.Pleasse kee p libraries alivex

We do use internet a lot but we do use the library equally well! Internet has not made library less useful for us!!! To start with, most of the top quality publications are still not e-Books, and I wonder if they would ever will, if you know how much wonders Big Books and those books of art do to little children. Secondly, why on earth when we are trying so hard to promote sensory engagement, hands-on experience with children in education and we are taking away the easy pleasure of actually physically touching a beautifully made book? Thirdly, The sensory stimulation is never the same when you are sitting facing a computer compare to being physically surrounded by the well of mater minds and the peacefulness and possibilities in a library. There is a unique and magical place in our modern society, and its name is called 'library' not 'internet'.
