1) Sponge filters need to be place at the intake, not at the outtake. 2) Never rinse your media under tap water. Use either de-chlorinated water or already cycled tank water. 3) Put the bio-media in a filter-bag to make your life easier and place it in the outtake chamber. 4) Put the carbon away, unless you use rainwater like me, and use more bio or mechanical media. 5) Don't try to set it up underneath your tank (i.e. use longer tubing): the flow will drop dramatically as the motor is not powerful enough. In short: intake > sponge (an/or other mechanical media) > bio-media > outtake. Not the other way around.
Anyone ever had a problem with it pushing out too much water and not sucking in enough to keep up? Mine can’t seem to stay full for more than a few seconds because the intake isn’t strong enough to keep up with the outtake. Edit so y’all don’t struggle like me: the fill cap wasn’t screwed on as tight as it should’ve been. Easy fix but god it took me like an hour to realize
Don't use the carbon. Save it. Carbon is useless for your tank unless your water looks cloudy (not from a bacterial bloom) or you're trying to take meds out of the water. Why waste carbon during a time when your tank doesn't have any of those issues? You won't have to repurchase it every month if you're not using it. Also, do yourself a favor and buy a media bag to keep your ceramic media in. Rinse the sponge and ceramic media in the tank water during a water change. Why? Tap water KILLS your good bacteria so you'll have to restart your cycle again. There is also no point in cleaning your ceramic media in dechlorinated water when you have water to clean with during water changes. It's safer anyways.
i was about to say, you could save the carbon for when you really need it. and just add an extra layer of bio filter. maybe more media, as long as you do proper water changes. cloudy shouldn't be an issue.
"Tap water KILLS your good bacteria so you'll have to restart your cycle again." Not for all people. Some get their water from a well with little to no chemicals in it. Others use reverse osmosis systems. But yes, it's better to use the water during water changes to clean your media.
I myself use it because I mainly use rainwater in my tanks. If I don't use it the water gets a nasty odor after a while. But I don't fill up half my canister or HOB's with it, that's just ridiculous. Just an inch layer (and even less with the HOB's) that I replace every 3-5 months (I buy it in bulk, which not only lasts for several years but also saves me a lot of money), depending on how long it takes before the water starts to get that specific smell. Do you need it with tap water? Absolutely not, but it does clear up foggy water though and tends to get rid of microscopic particles that otherwise would still be in the system. There's absolutely no harm in leaving it in there, just remember to take it out when medicating the tank.

what's the GPH for this filter? and is there a way to lower or increase the GPH? thanks in advance!
The Nano 10 has a filtration of 80 GPH. This particular filter's speed can not be adjusted.
is it safe for a betta fish in a 5 gallon tank? or is the flow too strong for betta fish?
I would suggest checking out our Micro Clean series:

My Bettas love the outflow from the filters, their in it all the time.
I'm looking for a canister, and I saw JBL as an option, what do you think? I found it good by the price range
I'm unfamiliar with that canister and its functions, but Zoo Med produces a variety of filters that may be of interest. See the full list on our website:

They can even put the feet on the filter
How can I order
Check with your local pet retailer and see if they can special order the item you are looking for.
Can my opae shrimp get sucked up into it?
Kelly Tynes - Peissner We haven't tested it first hand, but it should be fine for adult Opae Shrimp. However, if you plan on breeding them, we would suggest disconnecting the intake strainer and attaching a filter sponge instead to the intake tube to protect baby shrimp from being sucked up into the tube. Hope that helps.
rinse the filter pad in tank water from water change not under chlorinated tap water.. better option..
It ist a good Filter...but for every Aquarium above 80 liters...below that...it is too much...
looks like a pretty nice filter
price
You'll have to check your local pet retailer for exact pricing.
WASH YOUR BIO MEDIA ?!?!
Only recommended for new sponges.
I got this filter and it was almost impossible to take off the lid do not recommend
Heres a tip that i learned w this filter, the lid creates so much suction so if you take off the twist off fill lid itll lose all suction off the actual lid so u can take it off
Really zoo med? Considering the number of pieces and steps the instructions must be at least 20 pages long.
Proper filtering is important. That's why we made a video to help!
Very nice video. Easy to follow and informative. Thank you.
Poor design you should have a mechanical filter before the carbon and caramic rings the way you have it it will get filled with crap from the tank and you should've shown it being used on a smaller tank because both the spray bar and the tube are right by each other and the other half of the tank want get filtered much at all of you supplied longer hoses so it would reach the other side then it would work
Nice , cute but expensive !!!
