Three ancestors left. The last contact we ever had with our relatives across the Atlantic was in the -70s. I wonder if they are still there, and do they remember us?
And ABBA-Björns voice in the beginning ❤️ He and Benny wrote the musical. It is a musical about swedish immigrants who left for America in search of a better life (1/5 of our population). Robert here persuaded his friend to follow him to California to search for gold. Kristina is his sister-in-law, I believe, and they talk about what happened and why their friend Arvid is not with him when he return.
From time to time over the years other singers in Sweden have performed this song, it's a classic. But no one has come even close to Peter's powerful and emotional version. The original version!
In the full swedish musical, this is also when he returns to Krsitina, and it starts with her asking "is it Arvids' watch?" As he hands her his watch, which is the only thing he could bring back from the desert, where he buried Arvid, his friend who followed him :( it's heartbreaking
The musical is about the Swedes who left the poor Sweden for the so called promised land in the 1800s, Peter's character took his family and left their home behind for the riches and goodness across the sea, but it didn't turn out as they expected. It's a very well written musical masterpiece!
I'm Canadian and have been in love with this song and this video in particular ever since I heard it. It's nice seeing someone else enjoy it! Josh Groban has an English cover, and, not only does it not sound as good in English (even though I understand all the words), it is too sterile and lacks the heart and depth that this version does. Joback is so emotive and sounds great!
This song has so many memories. When my father was dying. I sang for him. I sang this song for him cause we both liked this musical. He was able to sing Guldet blev till sand. It was a sad and happy moment at the same time
For context: In this scene in the musical, Peter's character has just returned from the gold fields to his brother and sister-in-law (Kristina) in Minnesota. His brother has left the scene, and he has just shown Kristina his friend's watch (that's mentioned in the last verse).
He is singing to Kristina to tell her of the loss. Kristina from Duvemåla is a Swedish musical written by ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus (lyrics) and Benny Andersson (music). It is based on a novells by Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg detailing a family's poverty-driven migration from Sweden to America in the mid-19th century. You have earlier reacted to Helen Sjöholm and the song "Du måste finnas". That song is from the same musical. The musical is a masterpiece.
Thanks for this reaction. I'm guessing your other request was to react to Helen Sjöholm (Kristina) singing 'du måste finnas' and I hope that you choose the Swedish version for that one. Btw... Peter Jöback was also the Swedish voice actor for Aladdin and he really looked like Aladdin back then. He sang 'en helt ny värld' (a whole new world) really well.
I remember this because my grandmother always wanted to listen to it. There was a rumor going around that "the powers that be" removed it because otherwise it would just stay at the top forever XD
The quality I like the most about the song is also what I like most about his performance. It is the naked emotions of shame and guilt. He brought his friend there with a promise of gold (fortune, happiness). When they both saw how it turned into sand (disintegrated to nothing) his friend begs him to take him back home but, even though he can also see it he refuses and lies to his friend, thereby getting him killed. Then this song takes place when he has returned, alone and decides the lies has to end and he must tell her why his friend is never coming home. Now try making a song that explains all that emotion... Bam!
As you said it's from a musical. This very performance though is actually footage from a reenactment/concert that was made in America. You see, the whole story is about Swedish emigrants that move to America. This concert struck such a tune with Swedish descendants in America they were invited to stage a concert over there. That's why the footage looks like this weird blend of concernt and musical (the singers being in costumes etc, but no real stage production), and as far as I understand, just the main cast went over and performed the "biggest hits" from the musical, not the whole thing..
We have some real BIG gold nuggets in Sweden, singers and artists, etc. I'm very sad that ALL doing pretty much everything in Swedish, so much the world have missed out of... It's sad... I will now go and watch the Helen Sjöholm reaction!
Peter did the speaking *and* singing voice of Aladdin in the Swedish dub (and even did the entirety of the TV series), which is why the original A Whole New World can never measure up to the Swedish dub for me. Just an extraordinary singer.
This music is from the musical "Kristina från Duvemåla" that was written by Björn and Benny, the male half of ABBA and is based of the classic books by Vilhelm Moberg that follows several persons from sweden selling all they have and own to go to America to try and build a better life for themselves. Kristina is one of the main characters of the books as is her husband Karl-Oskar. The books are well worth a read.
You should have explained the context and the meaning of the song more. The lyrics together with Peter's amazing voice and expression is what makes this a true classic and national treasure here in Sweden.
It make me thinking of my great great grandmothers sibling Ernst, Olivia and Ed in that went to America during the starving here in Sweden between 1875-1910. Ernst was the oldest sibling and Edvin was the youngest only 17 years old and came never back to Sweden. Olivia went with her husband but came back. My great great grandma Hulda want to go too but then her mom said. No all my children can’t go, it will make me heartbroken. This musical Kristina from Duvemåla is about this epoch when people in Sweden was starving and want to go to America and make a better life. Today we have contact with my fifth cousins in Chicago, Milwaukee, Denver and Paxton IL where Ernst and Edvin came to and settle and become farmer and butcher and the old butcher is till there
Me: reading the subtitles when he sings. Me after watching about a minute: "wait a second.. why tf am I doing why am I reading the subtitles when he sings.. I AM a f*cking swede and understand every word he is singing" hahahha
Part of our history. Poverty and starvation and lots of deaths in late 1800 forced a lot of swedish people to immigrate and they chose to set sails for America. Left family behind in that misery who couldnt come with, many whom they’ll never see again. And many of them struggled when arriving in America. This musical is based on a swedish book series (witch of course are litterature classicals in my dear country) written by Vilhelm Moberg. (I think its on netflix now) and his dear Characters who make this journey is Kristina and Karl-Oskar and we get to follow their struggles and loss of hope and all that comes in theese books. ABBA’S Benny and Björn made an excellent job turning this classic to a musical. And not many artists can take Peters role in it. That voice…
I think you already reacted to his co-star in that same musical, here: ruclips.net/video/72IF4s5Qd-8/видео.html This is the Kristina he is singing to, performed by Helen Sjöholm!!! "Kristina" is married to Jöback's big brother in the musical.
Björn and Benny wrote another musical "Chess". Listen to "Anthem" sung by Tommy Körberg. He never went International but is still at age 70 very famous in Sweden. "Anthem" is in English. You simply have to hear Tommy!
@@fitmor_til_4 forgot that. They have been on tours also! But what I meant is that Tommy never wanted to move from Sweden. We have several singers and actors that have been offered international careers but preferred to stay in Sweden.
I have myself discussed directly with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (the two ABBA:s that wrote the musical) why they didn't succeed to get this wonderful musical produced at Broadway. They tried, but all producers backed out, and it ended with only a concert version of the musical in the "Swedish immigrant areas) in USA. I then suggested to Benny and Björn that they should get it produced in London first, because I think the producers there are more receptive because of its similarity with the very successful "Les Miserables". But Benny said that they wanted to do it in US first, because it's about the Swedish emigration to America. It's sad that this fantastic musical hasn't been produced in New York or London yet. When it was staged here in Sweden I saw it three times. Peter Jöback was singing the role of Robert the first half year, so I saw him singing "Guldet blev till sand" live in the musical itself (Kristina is Robert's sister-in-law).
Personally he sings amazingly but as a Swedish person I’m wondering if it’s even more beautiful or worse to a person who does not speak Swedish? I always think of that. But in Swedish it’s extremely beautiful.
Well, does it get better? Music cant´t be better then this, it´s the entire thing: His voice, the theme, you need to know that a lot of swedish ppl left sweden to travel to the USA, to get a better future. Some did and prolly most of the ppl didn´t get it like what this song is about. He died when he was drinking water from a a noot so good well....

Peter Jöback also plays & sings the swedish voice for Aladdin in disney's cartoon movie from 1992.
No Scandinavian whose ancestors left for the American Dream, can avoid crying when hearing this song..... 😢
Love from Norway 💖
I´m not crying- it´s just allergies... Love from Finland
Three ancestors left. The last contact we ever had with our relatives across the Atlantic was in the -70s. I wonder if they are still there, and do they remember us?
Watching from Sweden´s neighbor Norway. Peter is my favorite singer. He´s a beautiful person inside and out. He has the kindest eyes I´ve ever seen.

Don't forget Tommy Körberg 😊☝ (in beauty and the beast. Also chess)
He is one of Swedens best male singers. Great voice.
My uncle knew Peter back in the day.
I agree - Peter is the best!
I had the privilege of seeing him perform The phantom of the opera in Sweden. He is just amazing.
From time to time over the years other singers in Sweden have performed this song, it's a classic. But no one has come even close to Peter's powerful and emotional version. The original version!
The emotions he and Helen express in their face and voice is absolutely exquisite
In Sweden its a huge classic!!!

It makes me cry - EVERY TIME!!!! He's such a wonderful singer! 🙏🏼❤️
Peter and Helen are by far the most amazing swedish singers, they are just something else!
Don't forget Tommy Körberg and Anders Ekborg
Jussi Björling! Pavarotti called him the greatest!

We are very proud of Peter, he is a dimond and he has the stars in hes eyes. Always a sparkle in them.
Ive heard this song. 100 times, 200 times.
I still get tears in my eyes.
He is a very good singer. Sweden loves him. Sweden has incredible singers.
I really can't tell how many times I have heard this song and it moves me every time, Peter has an extraordinary voice.

Hell yeah! Helen are awesome!
It spent 110 weeks on Svensktoppen a Swedish radio chart. From January 25 1997 to February 27 1999.
At that time it was the record.

6:00 - "Hey, this is something else", he says as he clicks away another true classic from a brilliant singer: _Helena Sjöholm - Du måste finnas._
Yeah he has to show this one lol, its amazin g

yes, he went all the way up to Broadway as the lead singer in Phantom of the opera!
Its from the musical Kristina from Dufvemåla, based on the book Utvandrarna. About a swedish family immigrating to USA in 19 centuary
