    The American Bulldog is an amazing combination of work dog and family companion. Davette Fournier and her family have kept the breed as pets as well bred the dogs to share with the world. On thier five acre farm in Northern California the family shares thier home with, Hank, Cricket and Princess Fiona, all Johnson style American Bulldogs.
    The breed was reimagined by Allan Scott and JD Johnson in the 1960s, because many of the original traits of the original English Bulldogs were being lost. The American Bulldog is a great family pet.

    These dogs are very affectionate. No amount of training will prevent them from smothering you if you sit on the floor or sneaking into your bed after you fall asleep. If you don’t want them on the couch you can’t give in to the cuteness when they plop their massive heads down on your knee and stare at you with the sad puppy face. Unfortunately I lose that battle every time.

    This video is bittersweet. Fills me with pride knowing others feel the same way I do about this magical breed. I lost my AB about two months ago now to cancer and I have not been the same since. He was just over 9 years old - so he passed away a couple months after his 9th birthday. He gave his life to me and I am forever changed. I look forward to having a big property one day and having an AB pack running alongside me again. I love you, Kato.

      But I wanted to say, that's the down side of dog parenting, their life span. I have been through it so many times and I always say, "Never again!" And now I have 9. But I started helping dogs that are unwanted and that people get, then decide they don't want. It kind of pays that love back.

    I was given my American Bulldog, Biskit, in 2010. I currently have nine dogs, all of them, are dogs that people either dumped, or let run on the street(abandoned), or (like Biskit) just decided they didn't want.
    I love ALL my canine family, but Biskit and I have had a love affair from day one. When I first saw him, he was a flea infested, scrawny puppy. (I had, had Pitbulls for years and initially thought that he was a Pit) I fell in love, love at first sight, and told the people, if they ever decided to get rid of him, to call me(because I had a feeling). Sure enough a couple of weeks later, they called.
    When I first got him, everyone made fun of him, because he was so scrawny. Six mos.later, after getting food, NOBODY was laughing at him, they couldn't believe it was the same dog!
    This April 1st he will be 8yrs old and I call him my Son. I still have two Pitbulls, and the other dogs, but God blessed me with Biskit, the AMERICAN BULLDOG! ONE OF THE FINEST BREEDS ON THIS PLANET!!!

    I have a 13-year-old male, he’s ending His journey soon, but he was an amazing dog. As long as you raise them with animals that they know not to hurt, you won’t have to worry about anything. But look out if another animal gets in your yard, they’ll be gone. My boy knows what he wants, when he wants it, and how he wants it done. He’s very particular, and when he was still able to go on walks with me, he used to walk out with his shoulders out, and chest puffed out. Not in a dominant manner, just in a swagger like manner.
    They are excellent judges of character, every person that my boy has growled that has not been the best person.
    The only issues I have faced healthwise are tumors as he is aging, and skin issues. We tried giving him medicated baths and special lotions, but nothing really worked in the long term.
    I’m going to miss him, I love you, Maxamillion you’re one in 1 trillion

    I absolutely love American Bulldogs! I have two male Johnson’s and a female Scott. All three are livestock guards and are excellent at it. In fact my female lives full time with my chickens on pasture and even sleeps with them at night. Still haven’t lost a single chicken due to predators since I introduced her to the flock. This lady is 100% correct I will never own another breed of canine.

      Sorry to hear about your loss man, big respect for getting a rescue AB as well, it's much more difficult apparently. I don't currently own a dog because it wouldn't be fair on them with my accommodation and work situation. However I do walk several different people's dogs in my local area when they are working and stuff so get to know the different breeds a bit. The two AB girls I walk are like chalk and cheese and the same with two rottweilers too! Weird as they have such different personalities, what is your opinion/experience? Hope that comment makes sense...

    My American Bulldog was a street rescue (not through an agency) done old school and broke most of what todays rules are. I got a male almost 2 yrs old and intact. There is a sad story behind him but thats long in the past. When i first seen him he laid literally on my feet with in the first few min, even when a local child offer to play ball with him. I knew he was my dog or im sorry i was his person. It was a lifestyle adjustment Dogs in general are alot of responsibility and mine is no exception. I wouldnt trade him for the world quite the opposite he is at the center of my world and by far one of the best decisions i have ever made in my entire life. Sometimes i think he saved me. Peace.

    Great video. She is so right about them being in tune with their human. They are fabulous companion dogs as well as being protective of their family and household. They are fabulous with children and they train a lot easier than you might think. Although they are a working breed, they do not do well in the a very hot environment or a very cold environment. They cannot breathe that well in the heat. They seem to do what you do as far as activity goes. If you are active and always on the go, they will do the same. If you are a couch potato, they will be a couch potato. They can be dog aggressive, even after a few years go by. I have a 75 lb. female that has had a few litters. I have spoken to other breeders and they have told me that my girl mothered her pups the way that most AB's do.with that I mean they almost have to be forced to nurse and tend to their pups after 4 - 5 weeks. Overall they are a fantastic, beautiful, faithful breed that are great with children. Great dogs.

    I don't know about your American Bulldog but my American Bulldog likes to sleep inside the house. As much as she wants to sleep with me in my room next to my bed, I can't have her sleep in my room because she have some killer farts every now and then LOL. But she has her own sleeping area in the living room but every now and then, she would get up and go sleep next to my door.
    American Bulldogs are amazing dogs. I owned an Akita Inu before her but after owning my American Bulldog, I just fell in love with the breed. My American Bull name is Mila, and he's sweet, gentle, loving and so kind. Even my newborn baby cousin who met her for the first time, my dog was so gentle and loving over her.
    When my little baby cousin was learning to walk, Mila would just tag along behind her and make sure she was safe. Mila is incredibly tolerant with my little baby cousin despite my little cousin only coming to visit once every two weeks or so. Even when strangers come to my house, like electricians or a family friend, Mila would happily greet them and would even put her head on their labs so they can pet her.
    I owned many different breeds, from a American Pitbull Terrier, Chihuahua, Akita Inu, Retrievers, and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.... My American Bulldog just really won my heart over and my next dog is going to be an another American Bulldog.
    If trained and socialized properly with experienced dog owners, the American Bulldog are one of the most loyal, loving, kind, gentle, tolerant, goofy, playful, happy dogs. I would not recommend this type of dog breed for first time dog owners simply because of the American Bulldog's size, strength, and stubbornness. American Bulldogs are athletic, powerful and agile. But overall, they are an amazing breed.

    • @Seriouslypeople
      @Seriouslypeople 6 лет назад

      Royal Ace , lol, so true. I love them so much, they're definitely goofy and playful and have killer farts when fed chips. They have amazing individual character. Every American Bulldog has a unique personality. From my experience, males seem to be more friendly, but that's just my limited experience.
      They're easy to train, highly intelligent and full of love.

      I love mine too, his name is Titus. The farts are bad, but the drool...yuck! They shake that head and it flys everywhere. I can’t take him anywhere without getting stopped constantly, everyone loves him and he loves everyone right back. He turned 5 in December ❤️ we have a German Shepherd too, she is insane. If Adderall was dog, it would be Greta. They are total opposites!

    Another fine video on a fine breed. American bulldogs are some mighty fine dogs. Much respect to working/purpose bulldogs such as American bulldogs and American pit bulls. Not only their power, drive, and grit, but their well-rounded disposition and overall concept. With dogs such as these, you have a dog that can work hard as a partner/purpose animal and then go home and love just as hard as a family companion. As one well-known author, historian, and bulldog fancier, Diane Jessup, writes in one of her books:
    "A breed that, until the late 1980s, was virtually unheard of, this breed was made from existing lines of large pit bulldogs during the eighties to attract the novice pit bulldog owner who thought 'bigger is better.' Pit bulldogs which survived and developed along unique lines in secluded Southern states. Some lines of American bulldog are pit bulls crossed with any of a half dozen large mastiff-type breeds."
    Very sturdy, and well-rounded dogs. Not to step on anyone's toes, but I would fancy the Scott type American bulldog over the Johnson. The Scott type, at least to me, embodies the true spirit and ability of working/purpose bulldogs a bit more than the Johnson and have greater agility and higher levels of drive. They are closer to pit bulldogs in their build and work ethic and really do show that bigger is not necessarily better.

      Do you think that some folks would also classify the Saint Bernard as a mastiff as well? Some folks do put them in the category of molosser. Saint Bernard could very well be one of the dogs used. Actually, if I had to bet, I would say that you're right about Saint Bernard blood being used. I had even heard of an American bulldog coming out with long hair sort of like a Saint Bernard. If that is the case, it could be one of the mastiffs that went into the breed for its creation. I also believe you are right about breeds such as boxers being used as well.

      +Weirdanimalboy
      I had never thought of it like that, buddy. I can see how you may look at it like that. I personally say it shouldn't be thought of like that. It seems that more thought went into the American bulldog's design for functionality and purpose. While they do have some variations, they seem to be more uniform in appearance and breeder goals. The American bully breed's design was more about looks as well as having a more relaxed dog. Don't get me wrong, American bullies are fine dogs and I mean no disrespect to them, but the American bulldog, at it's core, was to be a working/purpose dog from the beginning. That is not to say that American bullies cannot also be working dogs as well, but when the two are put side by side, the American bulldog is almost always going to be seen as dog in better stead with working people.

    • @Weirdanimalboy
      @Weirdanimalboy 7 лет назад +2

      Static Surge I have to agree to that. The American Bulldog is basically a working dog that turns companion when the shift is over, while the American Bully is basically meant to be a pure companion, although there are some people that use their American Bullies for weight pulling and I've even seen some in bite work.

    Nearly everything you said about them is highly accurate. This is bar none the best breed there is. They can flip the switch from catching a hog to playing with your 2 year old son like it is natural and for the AB it is a natural thing. Just about any AB will hunt or catch a hog if the opportunity arises, but my dogs are always family dogs, guard dogs and our nearest companion. This breed cannot be left outside for long periods in heat because this breed can and will overheat even if you have a shaded bucket or pail of drinking water which is why it is always a good idea to have them a shaded small pool for them to plop in and cool off. I absolutely love this breed more so than any other breed because they lack most of the health issues that other breeds have, they love to play and especially with large balls, ropes, etc... These are very strong dogs and if you have never owned one then please do your research. It is a shame all of the AB pups that have to be rehomed because people lack the knowledge of the breed and their size and strength capabilities. This is not a Pit Bull.

      Erika Lewis I respect your response and appreciate your comment. I do not have 21 years of experience. I was probably 5 when she started breeding. All I was trying to say was that big breed dogs shouldn’t be allowed to pull(yes, I know they can pull a bus) haha. I do however have 5 years of emergency room experience and a novice dog trainer. I have many injuries/deaths secondary to a dog pulling its owner. A prong collar/e-collar work wonders for these dogs. They learn to respect their owner. Love them by leading them.
      Again, thank you for the comment. I know you’re just giving your input. Also she’s awesome! I love what she’s doing and my next pup will probably be from her kennel. I will personally have this convo with her. It’s never to late to learn how to keep your dog from pulling.
