      Ain’t that the truth. Those who know... know. Absolutely unstoppable drive when they flip that switch... but the most sensitive, intuitive and loving family companions. The best friend you could ever have. However they do require physical exertion and daily physical activity. This is a working breed dog that does require a lot from the owner. Do not buy a bulldog and stick him in a condo all day

    We adopted a dog 3 weeks ago from a shelter in Newark, NJ, it was advertised as a pit bull terrier. She was big, 75lbs, white with brindle markings on front and hind quarters and small patches of faint black on her enormous head. I knew she was a Standard American bull dog and yanked her out of there for $200. 3 years old and very gentile, I truly lucked out.

      U can tell straight away if the dog is a Bully if he has an over shot bottom jaw an flaps in between hind legs over shot jaw means the dogs bottom jaw is over the top jaw by a centremeter or so an short snout 3inches max Pittys have over bite same as us an all other breeds anPittys have longer Snout an the bulldog would be more thicker then putty . But best way is check the bottom jaw if it is longer an over shot the top jaw u have a bully breed ;)--

    The American Bulldog is the best breed I have ever owned or worked with. I had a shelter dog , American Bulldog, who was a five year dog considered unadoptable . He looked like a perfect American Pit Bull and he was white with grey patches. Over the years he protected my wife twice from attacks by dogs (both times by German Shepard mix). He also stopped a burglar cold who was in our house when we came home. He held the guy and suffered a beating until I got to him. He lived until age 15. I now have two American Bulldogs and an Alapaha Blue Bulldog ( smaller American Bulldog, very smart and easy to train) and two pit bulls. We have no aggression problems and all live in my house with my family. The American Bulldog is the best family dog I know of. Yours look beautiful.

    My American Bulldog crossed the Rainbow Bridge almost three years ago at the age of 10 & not a day goes by that I don't miss him. He was gentle w/everyone we loved but was all business when he sensed something was wrong. Maybe once my heartache subsides, I'll get another one❤❤❤😥😥😥

      Sorry for your loss. We've lost one too. Its wrenching. Don't wait too long to get another baby. They need good owners who care for and properly raise them. There's an ab fur baby who needs you. Puppies help focus your grief and work out the heartache. They're ok loving you till you can love them back. And if you call them by your old dogs name by accident, and sit down for a little cry, they lick up your tears.

      We had to put one of ours down. Her sister almost didn't make the transition. It was tough for me, too. Our little frenchie stepped in. Love these dogs. Sweet as can be from the start. Great hikers, ocean wave lovers, cuddle pros. Ready to play or nap on my exercise mat while I attempt exercise. Mine don't like hats. Too funny. We miss our Caddie girl. She's waiting in heaven, no doubt being a goofball.

    I had two, o' southern white, American bulldogs. Two brothers and they are/ were amazing. When my wife was pregnant, they followed her around. They would sleep, with their head on her belly, until I came home from work. They could run 15 miles and jump over the bed of my truck. Someone tried to break into my house, he was met by a 115 pound bulldog, who jump through the open window to stop him. Born to protect, work and love. They are true, tender warriors, and adore being in a family.

    Kraig, great video and information and thanks for posting. Until 10 years ago I had never heard of an American Bulldog, but an abandoned one showed up at our house on December 31, 2008. We named her Athena and she was the best dog I ever had. Our Vet. estimated Athena to be about 10 months old and she weighted 88 LBS at the time. She grew to a beautiful 130 LBS bulldog and was a great family pet. Athena was loved by all. Unfortunately, she got cancer in her left hind leg and we had to euthanize her on Nov. 12, 2018. Broke my heart. For anyone interested in seeing photos of her and a read about her story, internet search Athena - American Bulldog Tribute. I did her tribute to shed light on this great breed and to possibly reach anyone thinking about a rescue American Bulldog. They are GREAT dogs and I'll be getting another one soon. David G.

      Sorry for your loss. They pass away and leave us wishing for a little more time. We lost one too. Her sister is with us and she's loved like mad. Jeep rides and hikes around the neighborhood are her happiness. I want another one. Problem is short nosed dogs, bullies in particular, don't fly. Airlines won't transport them in their holds. I stayed here during 2 cat 5 hurricanes because my dog couldn't fly off island. It was a long 2 months before we could evacuate. Delta airlines waived the health certificate, so she went no problem. And came back when the power came up. Very understanding airline, Delta.

    SO TRUE. I never knew until I met Stella. She is a 10 yo hybrid Johnson (90%) and Scott. I realize how lucky we were when my sister-in-law was when she found such loving bully breeders. She hasn't had any joint or breathing issues. Still jumps off 4 ft deck and high-speed run pouncing to protect property line all day in between sun bathing and naps if you let her. She is the sweetest, stubborn, protective, intelligent, and most confident unphased dog I have ever met in my life. Very much needs her people around and to cuddle. No fucks given but will kill for her family. She is so chill. Her and cat are best friends, bully each other, and he is only animal she listens too lol. She broke her leg at one (rebuilt), is allergic to everything, ear infections, skin cancer, and kidney failure year and half ago. Given two months to live and continues to thrive. If she is dying, she sure as hell doesn't look or act like it. Her parents lived to 15-16 (crazy!) and her brother whom is like 40lbs heavier than her (she is 110lbs on average) is also still thriving. She is definitely expensive but worth it.

    Awesome video. I have a Scott his father was from the southern white line. I made a mistake and didn't do socializing as much as I should have when he was a pup. The biggest problem I have is he is a very independent thinker. It takes a lot of effort to get him to take his attention off something and focus on something else. Extremely protective of the children especially my daughter.

      They are strong willed, but they can also be unbelievably gentle at the same time. My girl, Rosie the Riveter, can go from growling, aggressive tug of war with an adult to kisses, hugs, and sliding down a playground slide with a little girl. The ability of Am Bulls to shift from hunter to soldier to nanny is one of the many things about American bulldogs that make them the most awesome breeds ever!

    Yes I'm in Australia W. A an own an American Bulldog (Scott line ) magnificent dogs working an family pet our boy is exactly wat they say . Will run an hunt all day long he is at 55kg in weight very powerful not type of dog an average person with no experience in walking this breed they are always loving an very powerful an always friendly with the family an some friends but at home alone become very protective of there home an surrounding's all round great inside outside dog dominant but so great with children our boy is great with kids he loves to run an play chasey as long as the kids want his size tends to scare people an is only to i introduction to people with him do they realize how friendly an loving they really are they are very protective of his master but r an all round great breed of dog but must have stimulation an or they will become obese walking an running a minimum of hour a day. They just love to sit with family an be very happy doing this must integrate with other dogs when puppy or in older age u will have problems letting them of there leads in dog park they are alpha male meaning they want to show any breed that they r the boss thus must intergreate as a pup with all other breeds but if u r looking for a good all round dog my suggestion is get an American Bulldog preferable (Scott line) but choice is yor own ;)- thank u all for taking time out to read a little about the breed. If ud like to get a better idea Google history of the American Bulldog (scottline )

    Someone I know, has a male 12 week old American bull dog pup in foster at the moment, and he was rescued by a woman whose boyfriend was training him in dog fighting, he has already shown signs of dog aggression, but he’s a beauty. White and gray. I want him so bad, but I know I wouldn’t be able to handle him. But the American bulldog is definitely one of my dream dogs later on in life.

    Another fine video here. Some folks may look at a bulldog such as an American bulldog or a American pit bulldog and see a dog that cannot do well in, or perform at all in, things like French Ring and other fields outside of what they were designed to do. Like this video shows us, that belief is definitely not the case as we hear about some very accomplished bulldogs. It is true that bulldogs such as these and others are catch dogs at their core, and most would agree that catch work is the work that best suits them (understandable seeing how that is what they were designed for), but they show their promise in different areas as well. American bulldogs are some mighty fine dogs, much respect to them. Not only should their power, drive, and grit be respected, but their well-roundedness and overall concept. They have quite a bit of range. Not only that, but they can love just as well as they work as a family companion.

    • @AlexCruz-wc1yo
      @AlexCruz-wc1yo 5 лет назад

      I assume that by "American pit bull dog" you mean APBT. If is is that the case then the mental difference between them and an american bulldog is big. American bulldogs are overall more mastiff like.The terriers used to create APBTs, english bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier and Amstaffs is what separate them from the american bulldog, mainly. It is quite easy to notice when it comes to their mindset to anyone who has owned them, especially at the same time. An american bulldog is A LOT more trustable in public environments in most cases in the sense that you are ( even though they are bigger animals) more capable of controlling them. In the other cases, once the full terrier mode kicks in, good luck with stopping them. My point is that an american bulldog is more suitable for the human peace of mind when it comes to the unexpected ( cats, other dogs, etc), being the APBT more complicated due to the many crossings of different mastiff breeds and terriers and reason why you have so many cases of senseless attacks on human beings that so many seem no to understand.The topic is more extensive but I will leave it at that.

    I miss my American Bulldog, Brandon. The thing with him was I would do bite work with him, than take him to the lake to go swimming, he was good with people and other dog's. Than I could take him to the hospital to go visit children who were sick, they loved Brandon, than I could take him to Petco, Home Depot or wherever with no problems. I could leave him in my house, he wouldn't chew up anything.
    Yet at night, don't even think about trespassing at my place, he wouldn't let anybody come on the property. I was thinking about getting another AB.

    Yanked my boy out of the shelter as a malnourished 1 year old. I’d never seen a dog quite like him- tall, long legs, huge head, all white with spotting and Dalmatian ears, and a black patch over his eye. To me he looked like an overgrown pit bull. Did my research and he’s definitely a hybrid/standard. Filled out to be over 80 ibs but he looks 90 and runs like the wind. Pretty sweet, quiet, calm but super athletic and goofy, loves to play with most other dogs. Bulldogs are known to be impish and he is an absolute killer and fierce guard dog. They are incredibly loyal to their owner. I will be adopting a female soon. I recommend everybody who is thinking about getting a dog if you are an active and confident person go to your local shelter and check out any ‘bull’ breed. They are a lot of work and headstrong/need a strong leader. I grew up owning an Australian Shepard and golden retrievers, 90 % of the people I knew had these breeds or Bernese, gsds, poodles etc. Bulldogs specifically are my favorite breed at this point fit my lifestyle perfectly.

      I like the Bulldog because they can be so docile that they literally don't back down to any threat its magnificent to have around you they literally fight for your life.
      As for the Boerboel Same similar deal only this breed has been bred strictly Killer to Killer for 400 years and the very survival of the Afrikaner relied on this breeding practice they had no use for color or looks the Boerboel was a Tool used to defend the Homes and Farm against all of the wild animals of South Africa be them man or other.
      Hope that helps your decision.

    I think I had a scott.. she was the love of my life. Sadly she had hip dysplasia and only made it 7 and a half before I had to lef her go due to pain. This was a while back. Maybe 10 years ago.. and there wasn't any type of hip surgery, or at least not where I lived. But anyway. Amazing dog. Sweet, calm, and obedient.

    I had an American Bulldog hybrid, Scott with the fill of a Johnson, massive shoulders but tapered down to smaller Scott type hind quarters. Head was like a Scott but with brindle Johnson markings, one patch over half of head and brindle back, white legs. Beautiful markings. Definitely a lot of fun but very demanding and messy with the drool. Great companions and temperament.

    I have both types Johnson and Scott; they are extremely smart and obedient. They have pit bull type drive but a little more laid back and can easily be trained to be less animal aggressive. I use them to guard my chickens from stray dogs that like nothing more than to sneak in and kill chickens. The video describes the difference between the two types, the Johnson is more laid back and a better guard dog and have that hilarious Bulldog personality. The Scott type are hot and dog aggressive , they live to catch hogs or whatever you throw in front of them. Great Dogs , I have many breeds and have had many more.

  • @Swell_Character

    American bulldogs are some fine dogs indeed. Basically everything folks want in a working bulldog. They also have a mighty interesting history/origin that probably plays a part in that. As one well-known author, historian, and bulldog fancier, Diane Jessup, writes on the breed in one of her books:
    "A breed that, until the late 1980s, was virtually unheard of, this breed was made from existing lines of large pit bulldogs during the eighties to attract the novice Pit bulldog owner who thought 'bigger is better.' Pit bulldogs which survived and developed along unique lines in secluded Southern states. Some lines of American bulldog are pit bulls crossed with any of a half dozen large mastiff-type breeds."
    Very sturdy, and well-rounded dogs. Not to step on anyone's toes, but I would fancy the Scott type American bulldog over the Johnson. The Scott type, at least to me, embodies the true spirit and ability of working/purpose bulldogs a bit more than the Johnson and have greater agility and higher levels of drive. They are closer to pit bulldogs in their build and work ethic and really do show that bigger is not necessarily better.

    • @maxcraven9335
      @maxcraven9335 6 лет назад +3

      I disagree. Although the breed of course has a few pitbulls in it's history, I believe it predominantly descends from the old Boxer bulldog. Dick the Bruiser didn't look like any pitbull I've ever seen and clearly predates the 1980s.

    • @maxcraven9335
      @maxcraven9335 6 лет назад

      Yes. IMO Dick the Bruiser was exemplary of this type in shape if not in size.
      Not a coincidence that six million Germans migrated to the US in the century up to WWI.

Pit bulldogs which survived and developed along unique lines in secluded Southern states. Some lines of American bulldog are pit bulls crossed with any of a half dozen large mastiff-type breeds."
      That's not true. They were almost extinct until Johnson & Scott made them popular again. They went through most of Southern USA to find & repopulate the dogs. That was their mission because the dog almost went extinct.
      To say they were bred to make them more appealing to the novice Pit Bulldog owner is waay of the mark. There's a lot of things that lady has got wrong regarding dogs & this is another one. They were NOT bred to appeal to Pit Bulldog owners. That's very WRONG!
      Just read about the history of Johnson & Scott American Bulldogs. It's very different to what that lady says......
      They actually come from Old English Bulldogs. Whether they've been mixed with Mastiffs I'm unsure as they have a different look to Old English Bulldogs. But it was OEB's that the people took over from England when emigrating to America. They wouldn't have been strictly mixed with Pit Bulldogs because that would've made them smaller, & AmBulldogs are generally bigger than the OEB's.....
      Nah dude, that lady has been wrong on a number of occasions, especially on game APBT's.

      @Miamiboi305 6 лет назад +1

      Swell Character pitbull dogs are not a brees "pit" is merely a category type of dog that reffered to several breeds that were fought in the pits..... Bull dogs, terriers(certain ones),staffies, all are pitbull dogs. I'll say this once. The american pitbull is the only dog with pitbull officially in its name. No other dog has pit bull. The staffordshire is not the same as a american pit bull and the only reason these dogs favor american pitbulls in the slightest is because all the pit breeds come from the same categories of dog by either mixing a bull dog with certain terrior or mixing certain terriers wit staff. Or mixing bull dog with staff. All the dogs will have similar tell tell characteristics of the crossing thus why only certain breeds are deemed pitdogs. If you have no staffy,terrier, or bulldog(bull dog is the original line to all the pit type dogs) you don't have a pitbull type and if its not a american pitbull you do not have the official "pit"
