Few lakes in the Pacific Northwest support Lake Trout, sometimes called Mackinaw. This non-native char species can grow to large sizes in lakes rich with food resources. Generally found in large deep lakes, Lake Trout have been introduced into a few backcountry hike-in lakes as well. Several years ago Sidra and I hiked into a lake known to support Lake Trout but I came away with only Cutthroat Trout but Sidra landed several Lakers. I returned for a redemption trip and this time came armed with a lightweight inflatable kayak to help me catch my first backcountry Lake Trout.
