Slovakian here, Fico is not dead, deputy Prime Minister and President-elect spoke with him in the hospital. His condition is stable but still quite serious. I believe he will get thru this and recover, mr. Fico is a sportsman, he is in great physical condition. All sane people in Slovakia are with him.

Eastern Europe is not a tinderbox. No matter who assassinates who there aren't any factions powerful enough to tip the scales. Orban and Fico are just making noises. Serbia could in theory make a move on Kosovo but they likely know it's doomed. If it wasn't for Putin's "sphere of influence" Europe has never been more stable and united.

I think what the British guy said isn’t entirely beyond reason, he did point to an overall authoritarian bend. No idea of Slovakian politics but I can imagine that if he’s perceived as pro-Russian, anti-EU and authoritarian while the country isn’t doing well overall, it’s easy to see that as an environment where violence becomes a real threat against that figure.
No idea if that’s a true reflection of the story but I don’t feel like the argument was satisfactorily refuted.
The context of a broad propaganda war in Western powers’, particularly in their media, is definitely a cause for incredulity during the evaluation of his statements but doesn’t place them beyond consideration.
