Great sailing. I just got back from taking my boat from Bocas Del Toro to Rio Dulce. What an amazing trip and I just love the way my 1991 Catana sails. Not having the experience that you have I got caught while sailing in 30 kts downwind and had to drop the sails and use the engine through this major squall. Your video showing dagger boards down and reefed main would have given me the ability to get through that storm in style. Thank you for the lesson. Just so valuable for me.
Good to hear the trip went well. Now the real work starts in Rio Dulce! It's important to be aware that you have options when configuring the boat for certain conditions. Our aim, by showing people how we manage Paikea, is that they may be able to adopt similar strategies on their own boat. 👍
Lovely sailing with my favorite sail. What was your apparent wind ? What is your kite material ? I run a 0.75 Oz kite at a max of 15 knots apparent. I run no main with topping lift tight. We crossed the whole Atlantic from Cape Town to Namibia all the way 2 Brazil with a main and Genoa only used for 2 days upwind. The rest downwind. Nights were very light with only 6-7 knots apparent winds barely holding the bag up.
Nice! It's our favourite sail too. Not sure of exact weight as we recut it from an RC 44 kite 🤔 I guess we could weigh some and work it out but couldn't tell you the brand of material. It's a quantum sail originally if that helps. We've got details on wind angles and wind range on our website youngbarnacles.com/boat-systems
No problems with chafe in reefing lines other than normal wear and tear. It is good housekeeping to check regularly as they are areas that see a lot of action. We use spectra covers and antal rings at reef points in the sail to help minimise wear.
Topping lift has minimal wear as essentially there are no moving parts. It is attached to the boom in such a way that there is no movement at all in the connection
Children are smarter than people think. Public school boars them, and dumbs them down. If you found a village in which none of the kids could not read or count or wright. Just pass out 100 cell phones to them, and put one child that was cell phone savy in the mix, and 1 year later they would all be cell phone savy.
Looking at your kids so enthusiastic for sailing is fantastic
Yeah it's awesome ☺️
Great to see sailors of different ages making the right (logic) decisions.
I really like how you cover the technical details. Keep up the good work!
Glad you like the vids 👍
This daggerboard down downwind for helping the rudder is a VERY INTERESTING concept . Thank you for sharing all your experience !
You're welcome. In our next videos those dagger boards become a critical part of sailing Paikea....stay tuned 😉
