  • Please enjoy this 4K tour of the Island Shangri-La, a 5 star hotel located in Hong Kong's Admiralty neighborhood.
One of two Shangri-La branded properties operating in Hong Kong, this is the newer property, and is also nearing completion of an ongoing renovation.
This is not a hotel review, but a brief impression of the property.

Have stopped in a lot of Shangri La hotels and in the past have stopped at the Kowloon Shangri La with their great full harbour views. I have been tempted to stay at the Island Shangri La but never thought I could justify the significant price hike over the Kowloon property. The refurb looks odd, rooms look very washed out colourwise, almost bland, and I'm struggling to get my head around the lack of doors on the wardrobe - that seems a very odd choice. Lack of wardrobe doors is what I expect of a budget property or in a full walk in wardrobe - neither of which applies here. Wardrobe doors serve a purpose, privacy, and protection from damage / odours

Funny you should say this. I was just looking over my footage from another Shangri-La (video coming soon) and their color palates do tend towards the bland. For me, it works in some settings and gives Shangri-Las that grand hotel feel. Where it doesn't work so well are the spaces they've tried to update. It feels stuck between two aesthetics.
The open closet is the prefect example. Are they a grand hotel or a chic boutique?

@@jrlthetourist Did read they have a new GM who was previously the Project Director for the refurb and is repositioning the property as an urban oasis, with a renewed focus on leisure and family markets.

The TV is far too small for a newly renovated room. The absolute minimum these days is 65 inch. Otherwise a wonderful hotel. I hope they keep a lot of the old charm with flowers and animal patterns.

I have mixed feelings about the renovations. They are certainly within the spirit of the old decor but maybe a bit too trendy for my taste. Some will love it, though.

I used to stay with that wonderful hotel a few times in the past but I personally liked it more than how it looks now. Renovations doesn't have to change things for the better automatically. @jrlthetourist

I agree with you : the previous design was much better...
The same has happened to Regent Hong Kong (ex Hong Kong Intercontinental)
