I remember her performance of "Who's Crying Now", too, and as much as I love Journey's high octane version I remember being very impressed by McCoo's breezy, truncated version on the show. She's really a much better singer than she gets credit for. She has a lovely pure pop sound not unlike Karen Carpenter or Dionne Warwick. I'd love to hear 'Who's Crying Now" again.
The Marilyn McCoo version of "Who's Crying Now" is back on RUclips on the Michael Miller RUclips channel. It had originally aired in late October 1981, according to the post. The song is shown in its entirety.
Are you kidding? She's had the same agents since the 1960's! And, she's had an amazing career. Solid Gold was merely a pad patch in her career. But, she was able to showcase her talent in every episode.
She didn't release music under her own name. She was lead singer of The Fifth Dimension, which was a Grammy award winning group founded by her husband.
Oh, Ms. Marilyn...why do ppl want to box you in ONE category. Don't they know you were ALWAYS more than just a POP singer. Your versatile vocals cannot contain you in one genre. You can SANG it all!
She is a beauty and has an impressive voice. I distinctly remember her singing Journey's "Who's Crying Now" on Solid Gold, and her performance on that was fantastic as well.
I'm just happy Rex Smith didn't cover this one -- I still have nightmares from seeing his version of Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger." Did she ever do any Pat Benatar songs? I think her rock vocal is pretty damn solid -- and you're right, the end, where she holds "though we touched and went our separate waaaaaaaaaays," does Perry's finish justice.
Thanks for posting this; I had no idea Marilyn did songs like this. One of my faves by her is I'M ON YOUR SIDE from CHAPTER TWO - the movie with James Caan and Marsha Mason released in 19080.
I think that you had meant 1980. Anyway, she did a lot of different genre songs on "Solid Gold" in the 1980s. Her range was really enhanced and stretched during that series.
From 1981-84, I was a huge fan of SG. I just LOVED hearing Marilyn "coo" (pun intented) out songs from the Top 10. This, I think, is her best such performance. (Also featured on the "Countdown '83" special.) By the way, did you notice that she mis-sang the second line?
That was not mis-sung, but this was actually done as a shortened version of the original Steve Perry Journey original. Besides 1981 to 1984, Marilyn McCoo was on "Solid Gold" from 1986 to 1988, when the series had ended.
@@Cavillier1970 The "Solid Gold" series aired in syndication in the United States and 43 other countries. It had begun as a 2-hour meant-to-be one-time countdown of the top hits of 1979 that aired early in 1980, but ratings were high and it had become a series by September 13, 1980 and aired through July 23, 1988. There were 2-hour annual Christmas and summer specials as well as special shows devoted to movies or other themes, including the annual countdown show. There had been a brief spin-off which aired in 30 minute lengths weekdays during June and July 1984. The hosts for the original countdown show had been Dionne Warwick and Glen Campbell. For the series, the 1980-1981 season had Dionne Warwick as host with occasional guest co-hosts, while 1981-1982 had Marilyn McCoo and Andy Gibb, with 1982-1983 having Marilyn McCoo and Rex Smith as co-hosts, with Marilyn McCoo the solo host in 1983-1984, which included this performance, Rick Dees as host from 1984-1985, but fired mid-season after his "Disco Duck" performance, Dionne Warwick had returned from 1985-1986, then the series was renamed "Solid Gold '87" for 1986-1987, then the final season was called "Solid Gold In Concert" for 1987-1988. Arsenio Hall, before his 1989-1994 Paramount syndicated talk show, joined Marilyn McCoo and MTV VJ Nina Blackwood for the final season as well. There were comedy segments, including Wayland Flowers and the old lady puppet Madame throughout the series. That led to a brief spin-off with the Madame puppet. Michael Miller, the musical director for the series, has his own RUclips channel and interacts with the public and answers questions and comments about the show.
I guess what verbaslt meant was as follows: (1) for the second line, Marilyn sings "both of our hearts..."; the correct line is "worlds apart, hearts..." (Hence the song's subtitle. I posted this same message on amiright.com, a leading misheard lyrics site.) (2) The first half of the second stanza is cut out here, most likely for time purposes.
@cyberella Hi...there is a video with Marilyn singing "If I Could Reach You" from the SRO concert she did in the late 80s/early 90s posted on YT...just search her name and the title of the song. It is a WONDERFUL rendition...even better than the original version she did with the 5th Dimension in 1972.
Really? The ending kicks! And considering she's more pop star, ballad-oriented, Marilyn does this song some justice... or, did you care to explain your comment further?
You know, I was ready to rip into her, but I must say...it's not nearly as terrible as I wished it to be. She did a good job. It's a great song, so that helps alot. I like it though. Love the gold llame. (sp)
I am glad that you liked it. She does impress vocally. She could sing any genre. She recently released a new album with one of her former The Fifth Dimension bandmates, her husband, Billy Davis, Jr. She is 80 years old and he is 85 years old and they sound good still as they ever have been.
i don't think she does a bad job at least she keeps it close to the original not like someone who totally murdered open arms(MC) 10 years ago and put it out in the charts
That is not a disco song. It had been originally released in 1983. This was from the "Solid Gold" countdown 1983 show, which had aired originally in February 1984. The entire episode is somewhere on RUclips.
Damn, I was hoping this didn't really happen and it was all a bad memory(like the entire 1980's). Oh well, here's hoping the last 10 years of music didn't actually happen..
They had their own "Solid Gold" band with a musical director named Michael Miller, who has his own RUclips channel and will answer questions from the public. He has a list of the band that was used during the show. There was always a live studio audience and a band, but the camera was close-up on Marilyn McCoo, so the band was not able to be included in the camera angles.
Man what a beautiful woman Marilyn McCoo she looked great in the 1980s
She's great and I don't understand why ALL lists (whether top 50, 60, 100, 200) of so-called greatest female singers leave her out...
I do not understand that either.

3 octave voice. One of the best singers of our time.
It's really too bad no major label signed her in the 80's. She could pull off so many genres of music. Incredibly underrated vocalist.
Remember, this is live. PERFECT!
Yes, it was live. No autotune and no studio enhancements. Just pure raw talent.
Oh, Ms. Marilyn...why do ppl want to box you in ONE category. Don't they know you were ALWAYS more than just a POP singer. Your versatile vocals cannot contain you in one genre. You can SANG it all!
She could sing the phone book!
Her group literally sang the Declaration of Independence. 😊
Marilyn should've joined Journey. LOL...
McCoo actually released an album called Solid Gold, which included her versions of stuff she sang on the show. I have the LP, it's pretty good.
Yes, I have that album as well. More albums like that would have done real well. That would have been wonderful.
She is a beauty and has an impressive voice. I distinctly remember her singing Journey's "Who's Crying Now" on Solid Gold, and her performance on that was fantastic as well.
Yes that song is back on RUclips as well.
I'm surprised she wasn't more popular in the 80's MTV format.Great voice
Wow. It's a really great voice. I was too young to realize.
Yes, she made her vocal mark and some.
She tackled this really well, it's not an easy song to sing, but she nailed it and put her own style on it.
She did it so well.
Ang Mrs. McCoo! she did her thing!
This is simply awesome! This song is made or broken by the drawn out notes and she NAILS them!
Alright Marilyn...luv her!
Thanks so much for that. Do you have Marilyn singing "Who's Crying Now" from Solid Gold? One of her best performances.
That is found elsewhere on RUclips.
Thanks for posting this; I had no idea Marilyn did songs like this. One of my faves by her is I'M ON YOUR SIDE from CHAPTER TWO - the movie with James Caan and Marsha Mason released in 19080.

brings back the 80's memories ... :-D

She really can carry this Journey song!
Yes, she could.
Love this song sung by Steve Perry, but Marilyn does it justice.
She did it justice and some and it is a shortened version of the Steve Perry "Journey" song.
Holy Crap! I never heard anyone but Steve Perry or Steve Augerri sing this. I admit I am very impressed with Marilyn's versatility.
Yes, she crossed musical genres frequently on the "Solid Gold" television series.
@@jasonburger3533 Gotta admit I never watched SG, thanks for the info

Steve Perry and Journey was the bomb with this song.
couldn't agree more, i'm dying to hear her sing asia's "only time will tell" again.
So has no one ever been able to locate Marilyn singing Journey's Who's Crying Now on Solid Gold? I think it was her first performance.
No, it is back on RUclips.
I guess what verbaslt meant was as follows:

She's cute
Steve Perry canta muy bien, pero Marilyn McCoo me sorprende!!!!

there is also a filipino who sing this song, arnel pineda of the zoo band
He has been the lead singer of Journey since 2007.
Really? The ending kicks! And considering she's more pop star, ballad-oriented, Marilyn does this song some justice... or, did you care to explain your comment further?
She did it very well. It would have been much better for the full version to have been done, but this was very good.
marilyn first sang "saving all my love for you" way before whitney made it a big hit. Marilyn sounded like doris day singing it.
Her most beautiful song, 'If I could Reach You'.
Do you have it?
@earbender
Anyone got video of that?
Better than the orignal.
I actually wish she had recorded this song herself. Her voice was made for it.
Hmm... I don't have Marilyn singing that one. Sounds like it was a good match for her voice. Maybe someone else will post it?
I wish she & Rex sang it together
That would have been something, but she did it well solo.
I don't think she botched it; they just cut the song down to 3 minutes.
You know, I was ready to rip into her, but I must say...it's not nearly as terrible as I wished it to be. She did a good job. It's a great song, so that helps alot. I like it though. Love the gold llame. (sp)

Hahahaha nice
It's definitely a far cry from "The Age of Aquarius" and "Up, up and away"
She went out of genre many times on the "Solid Gold" television series.
i don't think she does a bad job at least she keeps it close to the original not like someone who totally murdered open arms(MC) 10 years ago and put it out in the charts
at least she sang it live with a real band backing her and not tracks.
She did pretty damn good considering it's a song by a guy to his girl. And the background music isn't as good.
disco train-wreck
That is not a disco song. It had been originally released in 1983. This was from the "Solid Gold"
countdown 1983 show, which had aired originally in February 1984. The entire episode is somewhere on RUclips.

Nice but Rex Smith did it better on this very show with Laura Branigan who was a much better singer.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Journey luv you Marilyn still do
Man....where's the band? Probably prerecorded...so lame.
They had their own "Solid Gold" band with a musical director named Michael Miller, who has his own RUclips channel and will answer questions from the public. Damn she did a better job then Journey .
I wish the song was more clear.
